Orb Discussion

Alrighty here's your discussion thread for Orb which is the final episode before season three's two-part finale. As always there will be spoilers so if you don't want to know what happened before you see it then stay out. Oh, I guess you want to know that the episode is up on Adult Swim Video. The episode also leaked a few days ago so I know some of you have already seen it. All I ask is you refrain from mentioning how you got it. There are plenty of other sites on the world wide web were that sort of thing can be talked about, so let's keep it on those sites and stick with talking about the show here.

Honestly, I don't know what else can be done with those characters, the venture-verse is becoming really packed lately, and unless Doc and Jackson can back write in some sort of connection to this whole Guild situation I don't think they'll be that important to the plot.

best ep of season :D appart for Dr. Quin Medician Women!
But I agree with sleepykidd on this one! The show has created heaps more character's and the episodes have been well packed! There has also been barely any actual ventures bros. but more other charcters like the monarch, jonas jr, billy and white ect ect

I'm not say this is a bad thing coz the VB's RULE :)
Its just seems to be really rushed to fit everything into one ep!

I liked Quymn enough, but this episode was weak, if very intriguing. The pacing and structure were a bit shaky, and a lot of it was hard to follow.

Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet... I'm pretty upset that they made Brock's herb garden anything more than a cute, throwaway joke. The herb garden was a nice addition to the roundness of his character, and in vying for a wider scope for the show they took that away from him. Didn't seem like a great decision to me.

I don't think they took Brock's love for gardening away from him. After all, the grass on the Venture Compound is Brock's own special blend of blue ridge and creeping red.

In the interview below on this site they say Underbheit will probably show up again in Season 4. If they keep him more or less like he was in season 1 (i.e., he never had an entire episode centered around him, but was generally involved at least secondarily), I'd say that a lot can be done with him.

DH and JP promising to stop referencing Star Wars is like YOU promising to stop referencing Star Wars. i bet everyone here has made some oblique, if not overt, Star Wars reference in the last 1-4 days. some in the last 20 minutes.

VB exists in a world where the Star Wars movies exist. and many of the characters are openly, er... the kind that would make casual Star Wars references.

Star Wars is going to keep popping up in small ways, i'm sure. suck it up.

Ünterland, schmünterland.
that is so last season.

ok, so we've seen everything in the pre-season 3 trailer now.
and some super-awesomeness in this latest episode.

Orpheus voicing Crowley. perfect and obvious.

Tesla with the Avon Ladies - didn't Tesla do something with an engine and Avon? were they surrounding and attacking from Tesla electro-jet packs?

Colonel Lloyd Venture sure sounds a lot like Colonel Gentleman, and not a bit like Jonas Sr. i detect some sort of clonery, or maybe a transporting malfunction and JS got the superscience half and CG got the punching dandy half.

Rusty looks a little Devo in those shorts and turtleneck.

the cast in the TV show looked a bit different than the ones in the actual show (the cartoon we just watched - this is going to get a little meta). the show we saw the opening to and the scene Billy is watching - is it a cartoon or a live-action show? and in either case, is Thaddeus Venture portraying Rusty Venture as these events happened, or are these shows are reenactments of his adventures with actors? did Rusty play Rusty on his show?

how did Doc know that the box was for Brock? i expect there was writing on it, but the ASfix broadcast wasn't clear.

in the Vicky scene, it looked like there were a few proto-strangers for the guild in the airship (the three guys in cowls and tophats and goggles). and the logo on the airship is the Guild dragon, and it looks like a very stylized V through it. this, dare i say, Venture Guild, splits up to make GCI and Team Venture, i expect shortly after this scene. who else from history would be involved, whether on that airship or attacking it? Ben Franklin? Poe? Lovecraft? St. Germaine?

and who has given the Venture bodyguards their original orders to protect ORB?

got to watch again.
more questions and observations.

Honestly the only guy on the airship I recognized was Mark Twain. Someone calls him Sam, but that was his legal name.

They can say the finale is a two-parter, but that must make this the prologue. ORB felt like the first halves of the better episodes, where it starts by laying down the plot and characters that are going to be involved, then ramps it up more and more. The second half, with the fever-pitch conclusions where everything comes together, didn't really seem to happen. In my eyes, Brock with having a Christine moment with his car and Rusty vowing to find out what the Orb is for still qualifies as lead-up to something bigger, and I can't wait. I thought it was a terrific episode, but it produced so many questions my mind is a little blown.

Also, yeah the cast in the show looks different but recognizable, it's a cartoon... the fact that it's in a cartoon makes that less obvious, but they call it one enough. I was also kind of amazed that they managed to inject a real feeling of nostalgia into the opening montage thing for a show that never existed.

A Lovecraft episode would be pure awesome. Poe and his pumpkin head have had their time.

This ep was absolute win. That zep was hot, and Twain, Crowley, and Oscar Wilde make such a dream team. Tesla and the Avon ladies! Best throw-away line ever! (And band name.)

So it sounds like the Guild of Calamitous Intent was actually born of the Venture line and all his fellow costuming adventurer/scientist/literati? How genius is that?

Don't forget KITT voicing Brock's Charger!

I have watched “ORB” at least three times and I still cannot fully wrap my mind around it.

A lot of random thoughts, speculations and observations:

The Venture Brothers is about to get as Epic as “Lost”

I thought that the flashbacks were primarily aimed at “League of Extraordinary Gentleman” though someone on another board has mentioned “The Divinci Code as another source of inspiration”

The Guild of ??Good Intent??

Members:

Colonel Lloydd Venture

Eugen Sandow
World Famous Strongman
Father of modern Body Building
Personal Body Guard to Colonel Venture

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens)
Noted 19th Century Author

Alistair Crowley
Satanist
Subject of Ozzy Osborn song

Oscar Wilde
Noted 19th Century Author and persecuted homosexual

Fantomas
Classic French literary villain considered the prototype for the modern villain
Ancestor of Phantom Limb

Vernian Robur
Created by Jules Verne. A sort of Captian Nemo of the sky.
He is most likely the owner of the airship upon which the Guild is traveling.

Possibly:

Teddy Roosevelt
26th President of the United States
There is a rather large thread on Adult Swim where it is speculated that this person:

http://pics.livejournal.com/jacksonpublick/pic/00054ywf/

who they have dubbed “Patriotic Guy” may in fact be Teddy Roosevelt. Kept alive by super science for over 150 years? Is he the “Secret President of the United States” and head of O.S.I.?

Grover Cleveland
Inventor of the Presidential Time Machine

There are several others that I could not even begin to ID. Perhaps someone with knowledge of 19th and early 20th century literary characters could provide more information?

Colonel Venture actually sounds more like The Monarch than Rusty, J.J. or Jonas. He is most definitely voice by Jackson Public and he even seems to be animated to move a bit more like The Monarch than any of the Ventures we have met before.

Kano and Sandow the bodyguards before Brock seem to be sensitive souls, good at what they do but, not in love with violence like Brock. They seem to have friendly nurturing personalities. However, Brock does seem to be softening up a bit. Does exposure to the Venture family somehow bring out the softer side in these hard men?

Kano is apparently a fan of Howard Stern evidenced by his SIRIUS Howard Stern Fist logo T – Shirt.

Sanodow’s Message

“(Garbeled?) man of the future. Sandow is speaking to you from beyond the grave. The voice you now hear is coming from the Victor Talking Machine……..Duty that no man, dagger, bullets or blow would harm Colonel Venture. Foolishly, Sandow believed the device and my dreadful orders to protect it to be a myth. That changed, everything changed……Sandow knew what had to be done. Men like us follow orders. Yes future man, we really are pawns. But pawns that move in that crazy L-shape like that horse piece.”

I think that the purpose of the ORB may be to unite good and evil (or protagonist and antagonist if you want to be politically correct to not offend any guild members).

Where do the orders to kill anyone that tries to activate ORB come from?

We may be getting a time travel adventure. Who took final possession of Grover Cleveland’s Presidential Time Machine from “Are You There God… Its Me Dean”? or the time travel device from “Escape to the house of Mummies, Part II”. Also didn’t Dean say that angry guys from the past keep showing up to yell at Rusty.

Team Venture 3.0 can actually get things done. Is the real talent of the Ventures to bring together disparate people into a cohesive unit? As bad as Jonas Sr. could be at times I don’t think that anyone could accuse him of being a bigot. Team Venture 2.0 was incredibly diverse especially for the sixties. It included Blacks, Jews, Asians, Bi-Sexuals, Hispanics and half-man/half-fish.

The portrayal of Kano in the Rusty Venture Cartoons is quite racist just like Johnny Quest’s treatment of Asians.

Hector does not look very happy to be part of Team Venture.

A mind blowing game changing episode. I probably miss a lot and I look forward to reading what others think.

Aleister Crowley was a lot more than a Satanist and the subject of an Ozzy Osborn song, though he was the one and is the other.

He was a poet, wrote several classic books about magick and related disciplnes, climbed mountains, traveled the World, was openly bisexual and into S&M back when it was actually illegal to commit 'the unnatural crime of sodomy' and started his own religion, which still goes on. He has been a major, if sort of hidden, influence on the 20th century, continuing on into the 21st.

With the real Crowley involved with the superscientist Jack Whiteside Parsons (inventor of the solid castable rocket fuel, as in the Shuttle), it makes sense that he'd be on an earlier version of Team Venture -- if he could have sidled up to Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project boys, he would have -- anything to be that close to, um, raw power ....

Actually, Crowley wasn't so much a satanist as that satanists were influenced by him (i.e. the use of pentagram). He studied and borrowed from all sorts of magical traditions in coming up with his own religion, from ancient Egyptian to Buddhism, and it was centered around the belief in free will as the primary force that shapes one's destiny. Yet somehow the scandalous things are what people always remember. . . .

You are totally right. Crowley wasn't an actual Satanist, but Anton LaVey did use Crowley's writings and the religion he had created (called Thelema) as the main basis for his version of Satanism. Mostly, Crowley was known as an occultist and writer (as well as a hedonist and a bisexual, which was stated above).
He also states that he was the last person to add his "genius" to the ORB, leading us to believe that he may have actually completed the device. Not sure if this will have any sort of implications on the story or the finale but thought it was worth mentioning.

That was Oscar Wilde, though it did sound a lot like Mister Monday. Perhaps that their default "Dandy Englishman" voice.

Incidentally, not that this should mean anything, but I took it initially that the airship was involved in an air battle during WW1 (the implications seemed as such, as people felt that the fate of humanity was in the balance during the war) but then Oscar Wilde died in 1900. That doesn't mean anything, really, as the writers could do whatever they want (such as Wilde faking his death in 1900 to avoid persecution in England).

Tesla as an antagonist seems to be rather tantalizing- he was, in his day, as close to a super-scientist in reality as you could get, as his inventions more so than Edison's seemed to be in the realm of science fiction- at least contemporarily. Don't forget that when he died during WW2, there were serious enough rumors that he was working on a "Death Ray" at the behest of the US government and that the FBI took custody of all his documents upon his death.

Excellent use of real and fictional characters from the Victorian era. This may be the most intellectual episode they've come up with yet.

Here's a pic of Eugen Sandow looking an awful lot like his cartoon version:

I think no matter how we look at it the chronology's a little screwy. For instance, Aleister Crowley was only born in 1875, but for Wilde to be there the events must take place before 1900, when Crowley would only be in his twenties at the latest. I'm not even sure he had changed his name yet (he was born Alick).

Yep! Bowie did play Doc Tesla in The Prestige. In that film (which was a pretty good but slightly over-long study on the great lengths magicians go to to get revenge on each other for assistant and trick stealing) Tesla is painted as a kind, soft-spoken mad scientist who creates truly fantastical machinery. Edison (though never seen) is presented as the villain - sending his goons to hunt down Tesla, steal his breakthroughs and burn down his lab.
A good movie for fans of EC comics-style revenge twists, mad science and Tesla-as-good guy.

It was a perfect role for him, and excellently executed in my opinion. Plus, the movie also portrays him as someone who's concerned about the ethical ramifications of his inventions.

What I love is how well Tesla-as-villain actually fits the set-up in the Venture universe, in which the so-called heroes are unethical pricks and the villains are not necessarily evil, but almost always perceive themselves as the victims of great wrongs perpetrated by the "good guys". The more I think about it, the more I really want to see him on screen. (Anyone else get this idea of his surrounded by Buck Rogers-esque amazons with ray guns?)

The appearance of Phantom Limb's costume and his own testimony defintiely imply he was passed over to be The Phantom: the Ghost who walks because of his deformity. No skull ring for him ! When he taught at state college he was known as Professor Phantomos though that may have been an alias.

Rusty once said his own father Thadeuss, was a super scientist, and his father before him, and his father...no wait... he was a milliner (a hat maker).

Wow... this was an amazing episode! JP and Doc are obviously brewing something big for the finale - Jonas Sr.'s death, the founding of the guild, and so on. And biggest of all, it seems like Dr. Venture is finally turning into a real protagonist.

Aside from all the buildup, this was a well-crafted and enjoyable episode. Lots of good Venture Bros moments, proof that Brock still has it, and of course it's always good to see Pete, Billy and the Triad. I almost died laughing at the "they TP'd your corporeal form" line.

I agree. This episode was awesome. rusty was likable, the boys t.p.ing orpheus's corporeale form was hilarious and colonel gathers was creepy. But yeah here's a list of unsolved plot points tha thave not yet been revisited.
1.the monarch's free raid on the venture compound.
2.what the ORB does.
3.Who's behind the ORB conspiracy.
4.The moppets plan from "home is where the hate is"
5.Phantom limbs current state.
6.The captains job distatifaction

12.sgt.hatred arching dr.venture
14.Billy and petes quest for an arch.
15.Hank thinkning he's immortal.
This is all I could come up with but anyone of these 15 plot points(or at least 5 or 6 of them)

In keeping with the whole "Venture Bros. is for clever people" notion, I think Jackson and Doc intended for us to immediately infer that Sgt. Haine is Sgt. Hatred, because of the similarity in appearance, voice, character, Guild membership, NAME... I don't think they need to tell us, point-blank, "Sergeant Haine is Sergeant Hatred."

I agree, I think it's pretty obvious. What I really meant to say is that it's been shown to us that Sgt. Hatred was once Brock's superior in the OSI, and now he's a Guild-certified villain. He seemed sort of evil when he assigned Brock to Rusty's Blanket, but we now know that that mission wasn't (only) a punishment. Was he working with the Guild then? Did he know about ORB? etc...

#1 was resolved in that episode. The Monarch tricked Dean into not telling his father and Dermott was bribed into keeping his mouth shut. 21 thought he was killing Hank but of course he only tranqed him so that's one loose end but we can assume Hank was so engrossed with his own immortality that he forgot or Dermott and Dean may have convinced him to keep quiet.

#7 I don't know if it's worth worrying about I feel like that was just a goofy subplot, though with this show you can certainly never tell when a seemingly throwaway character will suddenly become major (and the Pirate Captain has certainly appeared more than I ever thought it would at this point).

#8 is simple, Cody is probably on Spider-Skull Island but in that glass chamber since he can't be exposed to an oxygen-rich environment. He's kind of a difficult character to keep around anyway because all he does is sleep or scream in horrible pain.

#9 the writers have said don't hold your breath. Kim is not a major character. Doc Hammer said everyone only actually cares because she's hot.

the rest are legitimate however!

It seems obvious that a handful of these plot points will be addressed in the finale. There are some things that will probably be explored/resolved in season 4 (since they're already writing the new season, it's possible that they inserted plot points with that preconceived notion). Clearly some of the plot points were just throw-away jokes and the like.

1.the monarch's free raid on the venture compound.

Seems clear that this will factor greatly into the season finale.

2.what the ORB does.

Due to all the information that has been dumped upon us in last week's episode, it seems like the orb will factor into the finale, but i could also see this as an introduction to a main plotline of season 4. Tough call.

3.Who's behind the ORB conspiracy.

What conspiracy? It seems that OSI is the party concerned with keeping the orb deactivated. How this factors in to the plot or the season finale beats me (see #2)

4.The moppets plan from "home is where the hate is"

I think this may also come up in the finale, since the Monarch and Sheila will undoubtedly be heavily involved. If it doesn't I suppose we can write it off as just more Moppet character development or possibly a continuing mystery for season 4.

5.Phantom limbs current state.

I could really see this going either way. The Phantom's appearance at the end of Shadowman 9 lead me to believe we'd be seeing more of him throughout the season. Once again I think it's fairly likely he will show up in the finale (especially with his grandfather being involved in the old school guild) but would not be surprised if they saved him for next season.

6.The captains job distatifaction

Although they have spent a couple of episodes exploring the Captain's jaded outlook (and his inability to escape his pirate past), I don't see this being an important plot point. I see it more as developing a minor character - giving him a little more depth, and proving that JJ's team is just as dysfunctional as Rusty's. Not something they're gonna "wrap up".

7.the captains addiction to tranquilizer darts

See above. I saw this as less of a plot point and more of a joke. It only seems natural that someone would become addicted to tranq darts, what with their liberal use in the Venture world.

8.The fate of sally's brother cody.

Cody is the definition of a one-joke character. Despite Jackson and Doc's knack for making seemingly one-off characters into fully-realized people, I don't expect to see Cody again.

9.trianna's friend kim becoming a super villan(Victor, echo, november)

I don't think we'll ever see this plot realized, no matter how hot Kim is and how much everybody wants to see it happen. Do we really need another side plot featuring a peripheral character? Of course we don't. If this list proves anything it's that MORE subplots are not needed at this point.

10.Dermiott being brock's son.

Clearly this is a huge one. I'm almost positive that Dermott will be back at some point in the finale, although I wouldn't be at all surprised if they kept the mystery going into next season, kind of like the whole Marla deal.

11.The monarch's obseison with dr.venture.

Clearly this goes hand in hand with #1. I'm sure it won't be totally resolved but it will obviously factor in.

12.sgt.hatred arching dr.venture

I have a feeling that Hatred will also show up in the finale. The Monarch moving in on his arch will surely cause more drama between the two villains.

14.Billy and petes quest for an arch.

This really hasn't been mentioned since early in season 2 (20 years to midnight). More than anything, it was just a good joke for the characters before they became more well-realized. Plus they already worked that angle with Orpheus and the order of the triad.

15.Hank thinkning he's immortal.

Another fact that may or may not factor in to the finale, but is less of a plot point and more of a joke/set-up for jokes involving cloning and such.

16. How Jonas Sr. died

I can't decide whether this is a giant red herring type thing or if it's really going to matter. The mystery of Jonas' death has been mentioned numerous times but never as if it was particularly important. The fact that it may have had something to do with the ORB is intriguing but I'm still not sure how it's all gonna factor in to the finale.

17. Whether Sgt. Haines, who assigned Brock to Operation Rusty's Blanket, is Sgt. Hatred

I think this was fairly obvious. The more interesting question is whether or not there was particular motivation for his assigning Brock to O.R.B. If those stories are indeed related, we may get more of this. If not, it was probably just a cool character reference.

18. If yes, how did Haines become Hatred?

Does it matter? Maybe. But I doubt it.

19. How the Guild was founded in its current inception

Clearly this is a big plot point. Like I keep saying, it remains to be seen whether this story will come to fruition by season's end

Yea, that's true. I actually wouldn't be THAT surprised if Jackson and Doc figure out a way to somehow tie up all the loose ends presented in this season over the coarse of the two-part finale.
That said, they also enjoy ending seasons on ridiculous cliff-hangers and setting up key elements for the upcoming season in the current season's finale (season 1 - Phantom Limb puts the Monarch in jail, setting up the season 2 love triangle type deal; season 2 - Sheila gets the Monarch to stop arching Rusty, as per secret guild orders, setting up the arching conflict in season 3). Basically I'm saying that's it's not inconceivable to think that some of the loose ends presented above will not be wrapped up this season.
And some of them (i.e. Kim becoming a villain, Cody's fate) are clearly unrelated to this season and probably won't be touched on ever again.

20. Who is the OSI's analogue of the Sovereign?
I don't think that will be covered but it might. 50/50 chance.
21. Whether Myra is really the boys' mother.
I think that theres enough evidence to prove that.(see the invisible hand of fate and dr.guymn, mediceine woman)
22. What happened to Rusty's mother
That might be covered. 50/50 just like 20
23. Triana warming to Dean's advances
Oh yeah. I love that subplot and given the fact that trian's costume from the season 3 promo picture(along with brock, hank and j.j's)(and dr.o's I think i'm not sure on that one) so it might come into play.
24.rusty's mother
50/50
25.dermott's mom
If he show's up and that plot's resolved it will probably be revealed.

Throughout the season I keep feeling as if these episodes need to be longer. I still love the show... They are really pushing the envelope and keeping things going, but there are too many questions raised in each episode, and too much intrigue for me to be satisfied with the endings when the ideas and characters in the episode haven't had time to "rise in the oven before they are taken out". Maybe I'm in the minority as far as this opinion goes.

I should elaborate. There have been good episodes, like "Dr. Quymn", and great episodes, like "Tears of a Sea Cow" and "Now Museum, Now You Don't", but this season is the first to have nearly this many really lacking moments, scenes, and entire episodes. "Home is Where the Hate Is" is probably the least memorable and least interesting bit of Venture so far, and "Lepidopterists" felt like filler in the middle of a season that has been overstuffed with new content.

It's not that I haven't enjoyed the hell out of Season 3, but the show's change(s) in direction hasn't quite been for the better. Congratulations to Jackson and Doc for what is still easily the best show on TV and my favorite, but I'm hoping the two-parter is a real blast- ORB sure has enough potential to make for a great closer.

You're right. The change in direction hasn't been for the better, it has been for THE AWESOMER.

I can see how someone might find Season 2 preferable on a couple of counts. Season 3 started out rather slowly and hasn't had the same sort of strong unifying arc that Season 2 had. Personally I think the many other strengths of the episodes this season more than make up for these flaws, but if you disagree I can see where you're coming from in regards to last season. I'm... really not sure how Season 1 competes in any way, shape, or form with this season, though. I mean, you had Tag Sale... and that's it. If I had started watching the show in the first season rather than picking up early on in the second season, I would not still be watching it.

I agree about Season 1. I started watching the show the first night the pilot aired, and I didn't exactly love it, but something about "Dia De Los Dangerous" however many months later caught my attention, in spite of its flaws, and I'm glad I hung on.

And again, it's not that I haven't eagerly awaited each Friday to get my fix of Venture this season, and it's not that I haven't still enjoyed every single episode, and not even that I've had a real problem with the new direction the show has taken, I just don't the execution has been all it could be. I think the perfect fix for the problems I've had would be for the show to be bumped up to a full hour. Man, that'd be beautiful.

Ah. OK, I got you now.

Generally I think that, on an individual basis, most of this season's episodes have been just about the right length for me. I agree that 13 episodes of twenty two minutes apiece is not enough to pack in a season that truly does the show justice, though. I wouldn't give up a minute of this season, but there are indeed a few threads which have been left dangling. Witness Sgt. Hatred's role; I actually think he was set up beautifully in Home is..., but in spite of being closely connected with this season's arc all he's had since then was an appearance in Buddy System. Which was superb, but they still could have done more.

I'm not sure if I believe that Kano killed Jonas Sr. He may have just gone silent like the Council of 13 did on the subject. Sure, it could have been a guilty silence, or it could have been a "We-e-ell, I'm not going to say one thing or another, since he's totally alive/head of the Guild/cloned."

Holy cats, what I wouldn't give for Dr. Venture having an epiphany and realizing he's a better adventurer than scientist. Indeed, what I wouldn't give for the rebirth of a new Team Venture with Rusty, the Order, Billy, Pete, the boys, and Brock - supplied with cool stuff by JJ and crew.

Yeah, the show is about failure, but this would give them a chance to fail on a really grand scale.

Col. Venture is most likely Rusty's great granddad and Jonas Sr's Grandad. Because Jonas Sr definitely wasn't born in the 1900's and had Rusty in the mid 60's.

This was by far the most revealing episode in terms of the past and why things are they way they are. It's is the turning point in the whole series. Things will get alot more serious and dire in the future. A few nit-picking things I caught, Brock's headphones are of the MInnesota Vikings and the box Doc gives him say Venture Bodygard.

Yeah, I'm not quite ready to buy the idea of Jonas Venture's death by Kano just yet. For one, it wasn't tacitly admitted to, just a long pause by Kano. Second, there was no footage whatsoever of this 'event', only the fresh scene of Col. Venture getting taken out by HIS bodyguard. Thirdly, if Jonas was killed because of the ORB, then it simply doesn't make sense that he would have been allowed to hide it so elaborately, as it would appear (given Brock's awaiting of Rusty's decision of what to do with the ORB before deciding whether or not to kill him) that death is only required if one intended to actually USE the thing (which of course begs the question of why, if OSI doesn't want this thing activated, they don't just destroy the thing or at least take it and hide it themselves...).

An aside: It seems that Kano's silence was due to some previous sin... Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kano was a 'mute' back during the old Team Venture days, when Jonas was still alive, again casting doubt on Kano having actually done Jonas in.

Interestingly enough, though, the inclusion of Fantomas in the flashback (as well as several name drops for him during the flashback) tells me that Phantom Limb is probably going to be deeply involved in whatever's happening in the next episode...

I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeve...

Kano admits right off the bat that "I have taken from this world a great man" but unlike Mr. Doe I don't think he means as in cold blooded murder. I think he was indeed complicit in Jonas Venture's disappearance (his appearances in flashbacks have always been fairly brief, so it's possible he was merely quiet back then and not actually under a self-imposed silence). But having confessed his guilt to begin with, why does he clam up when Brock asks him about it? I think the answer is more complicated than a straight yes or no. Maybe Kano sent him on a one-way trip to another dimension, or into the future or some such. Another possibility that Jonas did actually activate the orb and beamed himself into another place or time (or possibly just killed himself on accident) and Kano is reluctant to answer Brock because he failed to stop Jonas when he was supposed to. That's less likely given the orb's elaborate hiding place, though, unless someone else (Kano?) hid it afterwards.

Somebody took the time to hide all these clues in the old Rusty Venture cartoon series.

It also dawns on me how awesome Billy Quizboy was in this episode.

Remember, the Rusty Venture show was a Venture Industries production. I like to think hiding the clues (and possibly promoting the Venture Rex Cigarettes division of the company) was Jonas' primary reason for financing it in the first place.

coulda been a "Blink" thing too, where the Doctor on that there BBC program puts hella easter eggs on one girl's DVD... so she'd find it as a dialogue with her.. and transcribe it, save the Doctor, see him afterwards and give him that transcript... that he'd use when he was stuck in 1969 to influence a DVD duplicator, also thrown back in time... to create the easter eggs for the girl to find.

It won a Hugo this weekend, so shut up.

Yeah Kano appeared to be mute back before Jonas Venture Sr. was dead. I mean all of his appearances since season 1 he has never spoken in any flashback even though Jonas would give him orders all the time all he ever did was nod and comply. So I feel like he killed someone important prior to becoming Jonas Sr.'s bodyguard.

However his silence when Brock asks if he killed Jonas Sr. doesn't indicate anything. He could have also killed his old boss (as well as whoever else he killed first), or he could simply know how Jonas Sr. died and doesn't want to bring it up. I'm really hoping they bring it up in the last two episodes this season because I really want to know damnit >:(

Perhaps the ORB has to be used at a specific place and time to save the human race. Maybe the same alien race that sent the message to Jonas Sr. to build the portal in "Twenty Years to Midnight" so the alien assasin could kill the Galactic Inquisitor has been contacting the great minds of humanity throughout history with instructions on how to build the ORB.

It the ORB is used before the appointed time humanity is doomed.

I'm going to throw a crazy idea out here..

While it is certainly implied that when Kano says "I've taken from this world a great man" that he's speaking of Jonas Sr., it's not confirmed either (uncomfortable silence isn't necessarily a confirmation).

What if the great man was none other than... Dr. Benton Quest? What if Dr. Quest attempted to activate the Orb with Jonas Sr., and somehow Jonas Sr. was killed in the process and Kano had to kill Dr. Quest? Or... even mind blowingly enough, what if Race Bannon had to kill Benton Quest, killing Jonas Sr. in the process, and the original Team Venture was unable to stop it. Note that during the timeline of the show, Race Bannon is back at OSI HQ torturing Sphinx guys, and not bodyguarding Benton Quest anymore. It fits in with the timeline, as at this point Dr. Venture is also dead (Myra is bodyguarding Rusty)

Dr. Quest has never made an appearance on the show. The writers have been saving him for something special, I'm sure. Hell, we've seen everyone, including Dr. Zin. I have this sneaking suspicion that something big is going to happen that will bring Dr. Benton Quest into the Ventureverse.

That seems kind far-fetched. The Quests aren't really the focus of the show, I'm not sure that we can infer anything just because Benton Quest isn't it. I might be wrong of course, but that seems like a rather elaborate conclusion for next to no evidence at this point.

The pattern on the Orb itself reminds me of a design by M.C. Escher, like Circle Limit IV or Sphere with Angels and Devils.

Now Escher wasn't born until 1898, so his influence on the thing wouldn't make sense in the context of the flashback, but it's possible that the art department was thinking about Escher's work when they designed it.

Also, I don't know how many people know about this, but Billy mentions that the secret message is a skytale, which was supposed to have been invented by the Spartans. The frame of the cartoon showing the message in the smoke from the barrel of Rusty's gun defines the length and circumference of the cylinder used to decode the message.

who assigned the Venture bodyguard to protect ORB/prevent ORB form being activated?

who put the code into the old Rusty Venture shows? Billy's been seeing the clues for 30 years - they weren't added to the dvds, they were in the original broadcasts. AND who placed ORB in that office in the Frick? Kano??

I suspect the ORB is itself responsible for the clues.

Brock was excellent. And Billy and Doc worked well together. I did enjoy that the boys and their babysitters were the research team.

It was a very fun show. Did we see Edison? And I would only know half of those in the Zeppelin if not for Jess Nevins.

How about this one... maybe I'm just not seeing this, but the last clue to the location of ORB was the 'simple substitution' 221210. Rusty solved it, asking himself 'what's the twenty-second letter'?

well, it's V. the 12th letter is L and the 10th letter is J. Are they looking for the VLJ? or is this something i'm just not seeing? Seriously, this is bugging me... the writers would surely have thought that one through a little better, right?
...

right?

also, quit hating on Lepidopterists. it established the fact that the Monarch now has free reign to go after Venture, free from Guild interference, which will surely complicate the finale. it solidified Jonas' role as interloping asshole, too.

Just a note - I found an animation blooper in this episode that may be nifty for the capsule.

After discussing that the box may contain either poison gas or gold and diamonds, right as Billy opens the box - you can see that both his hands are robotic. Just a few frames of animation - but noticable!

It seemed like there were a number of animation bloopers this episode. Other than Billy's two robotic hands and the two cylinders in Brock's box, Billy climbed along the rope that he fired from the crossbow in the Frick by taking two hands off the rope at once. This looked weird and caused him to float.

But these little mistakes are excusable, because this episode was much, much richer in character animation than any yet. Check out the scene with Brock talking to Hunter. There are so many little things in their movements that I didn't catch the first time around. In the midst of having their conversation, Hunter's cigarette goes out, he coyly motions for Brock to relight it (which Brock does); immediately after, a stripper (from Mid-Life Chrysalis?) walks past and Brock's eyes follow her butt, and then Brock responds to Hunter with an exaggerated facial expression. No static bodies here! Little things like Brock cracking his back (twice this episode!) really add to the atmosphere. And the Alchemist has become especially animated. I loved his pelvis thrusts when he said "I'm on the job".

As long as we're naming them: the Aztec calendar hiding the wall safe disappears after Doc closes it and turns away.

Also, the flashback scene where Sandow is carrying Crowley out has some pretty shoddy animation; everyone's heads turn to watch him go, but everyone's bodies stay static, so you get a creepy exorcist head spin effect. There are even some animation artifacts on the guy sitting at Wilde's left, with his head "smearing" a bit as it pivots.

Yeah the direction in this episode was really well done. As you said lots of subtle stuff you don't notice on the first viewing because you are paying attention to the crazy story. One of my favorite scenes is the one where Brock is listening to the gramophone thing. He's just sitting there listening and smoking but the way he's positioned and the way his breathing reacts to what Sandow is saying (easily seen because he is smoking) is very subtle and nuanced but so well done. Huge props to Jackson and the storyboard guys for doing stuff like that.

I was scared JP and Doc were losing their steam because the last 2 eps weren't over the top as I have come to expect but this episode shattered those doubts. This was a exceptionally well written episode. Mostly because it is the ONLY episode ever that built up suspense all the way through it. It was more like a mystery rather than the usual comedy. I can't wait for the next 2 eps. I hoping with every fiber of my being that Phantom Limb comes back in these next eps. If he doesn't I'll feel a little dissapointed even if the episodes are great because he's still my favorite character. I'm hoping he gets a hold of the ORB and uses it for revenge.

To answer my own question, since Brock's charger has gone AWOL, Hunter gives him the roll of hundreds so he can buy airplane tickets and so on. I still say that he should have plenty of money: he gets paid by the government, he gets room and board from Rusty, he hardly ever spends money except once in a while going to a strip club, and he took Venturestein out for hookers that one time.

I suppose that if he wanted to not leave a paper trail the roll of hundreds would come in very useful, but you'd think he'd have documents for at least one extra identity, and you attract maybe more attention paying cash these days than you would just paying with credit cards. I'm probably overanalyzing.

i got that he was asking the OSI computer in his car about the Orders Regarding Bodyguard: Termination Clause. i got that the "termination clause" was about that he was going to need to kill Rusty if he activated ORB. but that he still didn't understand and so asked his car computer about it. the car computer doesn't understand his question, or misinterprets what he's asking, or he gives the number too late, or something, but i think he and the car are misunderstanding each other.

and the car is still trying to "terminate" him.

i think that OSI programming is messed up, perhaps, not that OSI has turned on Brock.

Epic episode. The implications are incredible. I think teh reason a lot of people have disliked this season, why the funny isn;t quite as there as it could be, is that they're setting the groundwork for something absolutely incredible. I also think they've been trying to cram waay too much, both in terms of backstory as well as setting up for future stories, which doesn't really make much sense to me since this is the first time they've known that they'll have another season to work with after this one, unless they've got some really big plans. I guess we'll see. I'm really excited about the finale though, I can't wait to see which arcs they'll close up on elaborate on and how. There's just so much they've thrown at us this season, it's hard to keep a grasp on it all.

I've come to the conclusion that the original team venture was like the avengers or even the x-men in that it had a few core members (Dr. Venture, Kano, Col Gentleman, etc.) and a revolving-door roster of heroes and adventureres, which explains why it seems that theirs so many, but most of them only show up once or twice. Team Venture wasn't just a crew that Jonas hung out with, it was a cabal, it was the last vestiges of the Guild that was spoken of, possibly even gathered for the sole purpose of battling the GCI. Probably after that battle we just saw, the Guild broke up into OSI and GCI and Venture was left to guard ORB, or rather was killed and his son was left to guard ORB.

This was one of my Favorite Episodes of the season. It had a lot of what I said I felt we were missing in this season: Adventure, More Brock, Dr. O, Back story, globe trotting, throw triana, 21 and 24 into the mix and it's the best story EVER.
Obscure references abound, Pogs?!?! C'mon, who didn't Love those?
I think it woulda' been great if pete had been drinking a Frutopia, rather than Fanta on the compound.

Say, did anybody else notice that the girl walking in the background of the airport was Sky? the Rave girl with whom Dr. V told brock he was going to have a child.

Hey, not to go all Billy Quizboy on everyone, but does anyone else think that this episode might be suggesting that there are clues hidden in the episodes this season that point towards a URL or location or something? I mean, they've improved the quality to HD, so it would be an ideal time to hide some little clues here and there... For example, when Hank is digging (and I'll have to look at this later), I swear I saw a number or letter pop up.

Anyone? Have I just gone off the deep end?

On one hand, I wouldn't put it past DH and JP to hide a URL or something similar in the show. On the other hand, I would also not put it past them to make some us believe there is something there and waste a bunch of time for nothing and find that funny. If there is something there, I'm sure some superslueth like Billy will find it. As long as they don't wind up in the restroom of Studio 54.

i got another meta-question:
does the Johnny Quest cartoon exist in the Ventureverse? were there two boy-adventure shows on during the 70s?

or are the Johnny Quest cartoons we know records of _actual events_ in the Ventureverse? and Rusty's life was occasionally similar?

then, was Action Johnny a live action adventure show, where Johnny was himself in the recording of actual events in his life?

i realize i'm wandering into academic sophistry, but i'm wanting to sort out this universe-within-a-universe thing, where cartoons i grew up with are extended into cartoons i enjoy now.

tangentially, i'm usually annoyed how in most zombie movies, the characters exist in a universe where no one has invented zombie movies, so no one really knows what to do or expect.

You should read the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks. It's done mostly straight as if a real survival guide, but pokes fun at some of the movie and literature "stereotypical misconceptions" about them. Then read World War Z, also by Brooks, where the human race is nearly wiped out by a zombie plague.

"The Venture Bros." -- real, we are watching it as it happens
"The Rusty Venture Show" -- cartoon dramatization

"Jonny Quest" -- real, as it happened
"Action Johnny" -- cartoon dramatization

Colonel Venture may be a common ancestor (Great Grandfather) perhaps, but I doubt they're anymore closely releated than that. On the other hand, old Jonas was a bit of a swinger who got around, so who knows. Maybe the man killed in the plane crash in the NJ Pine Barrens wasn't the Monarch's real father? His mother may have had an affair. Okay, now that I think about it, rule number one of this show is, "Never rule ANYTHING out!"

There is no clutch pedal...

Twice that I remember, Brocks charger is refered to as having a manual transmission...
In 'Return to spider skull island' when Brock is tied to the hood, he shouts to HELPER 'You can fly the X1 but you can't drive stick'...
In 'Hate Floats' Dr Ex-Girlfrind gives Hank a driving lesson telling him to put his foot on the clutch and selct first gear...?

A couple of things stood out to me the last time I watched this episode.
1) when they are opening the box rusty is rubbing his fingertips like the traitorous porter at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
2) Brocks bodyguard orders that hunter circled ORB have the Guilds dragon on the cover page.
Question, could the guild be secretly pulling the strings for the OSI?

I think the bodyguard orders may come from a third splinter group or a guild of bodyguards separate from Lloyd's guild or O.S.I. Hunter told Brock that he really didn't know much about "Orders Regarding Bodyguard" and Brock would have to speak to another Venture Bodyguard for more information.

On related note I notice that Lloyd's guild had a Dragon with a sword through it as their emblem. They saw themselves as slayers of dragons.

The modern guild's emblem has the same dragon on top of a globe. The modern guild sees itself as the dragon dominating the world.

Brock is a great bodyguard and a poor Assassin. In Assassinany 911 he is ordered to kill Hunter, and does not. In ORB Hunter tells Brock that if Rusty tries to activate the device, then Brock must "take him out". In the museum Brock puts away his knife when he hears Rusty talk of using ORB for good. One would have to "activate the device" to use ORB, even with the best of intentions. Lloyd Venture had good intentions for ORB, yet Sandow "knew what he had to do". Jonas Sr. is a man of hope, and likely had good intentions for ORB, yet Kano took from this world a great man. I really don't want the show to lose Rusty Venture, but by rights, Brock should have ended Rusty there in the museum. We know that Brock is not fond of the moral ambiguity that is thrust upon members of the Office of Secret Intellegence. I also would have no love for such messy tasks.

I watched it again a bit ago and I have a couple of thoughts:

Hank thinking that Brock was going to swear / talk about naked sex ladies was hilarious...

I think Brock's car tried to kill him because he didn't give the correct code when trying to access secret info... I don't think it was BECAUSE he tried to access the info...

I thought it was great that Archimedes started ORB with only a mirror... this is a reference to the story (likely myth) that Archimedes set fire to enemy ships with a system of mirrors...

Crowley said he was the "last" to add to the sphere, but I believe he meant that as in "most recent" (at the time he said it)... in other words, other people could have added after that (or might still in the future)... I wouldn't be surprised if Jonas Venture added to it in some way...

Brock referring to his assignment as ridiculous before looking at the boys and changing his words... a further reminder that we still don't know the details behind all of that...

Archimedes Death Ray was not a myth. It has been duplicated.

They got a bunch of guys with polished bronze shields, and set them in a parabola on the shore, and trained them to reflect the sunlight off their shields onto the same spot on one ship at a time.

As I say, it has been done. By MIT students: http://www.metafilter.com/45793/Archimedes-Death-Ray-Idea-Feasibility-Testing

Right, it was a "get this guy out of our hair without actually firing him" job which is perfect because he would be 'busy' the entire time, but at the same time it's an insulting assignment to give to Brock. Even if you do know about ORB it's still babysitting because, in the case of Rusty, he doesn't even know about the thing and were it not for Billy Brock would have gone his entire OSI career without doing much aside from beating up dudes who go after Dr. Venture.

A fat hole in the Kano killed Jonas theory:
This was Brock's assumption. Kano neither confirmed nor denied it.
Kano states that his silence was his self-imposed penance for depriving the world of a great man. In all the flashbacks we've seen of Kano where Jonas is still alive, Kano appears to be mute then. Whatever he did to whomever, was probably before Jonas allegedly "died". There are other ways to "deprive the world of a great man" besides killing them. Imprisonment could be one. Refusing to speak up or take action when a single dad is being a "crappy father" so his son would grow up to be a failure instead of a "man of hope" is another. As I’ve said before, the cliffhanger ending will either reveal that Jonas isn’t dead, or at least the possibility he may still be alive.

and......AND at the end of the episode Rusty states that his father obviously hid the ORB for a reason. So if Jonas hid it, he was probably not trying to use it (trying to use it would have been the reason to have to kill him) but instead to keep others from getting it and trying to use it. This is, of course, assuming it was Jonas that hid the infernal thing in the first place. Hold on for the Wilde ride to come!

Pete White comments that the creator of the riddle didn't count on the people trying to solve it having the internet, but the search actually started with an internet address (that Billy found)... sure it is possible that the person who created the riddle was different than the one who hid it, but it is still kind of interesting... though I don't think it means anything more than the fact that White and all are somewhat oblivious...

The person who put the URL into the Rusty Venture Show is not the same person who wrote the riddle. The riddle that White is referring to was probably written many years before the Rusty Venture Show. I'd imagine this was how Jonas found ORB; and then the location of the riddle was just an added step that someone (Jonas?) involved in the Rusty Venture Cartoon added.

Still doesn't explain how the URL found it's way onto the original cartoon show 30 years ago.....

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
