The pattern on the Orb itself reminds me of a design by M.C. Escher, like Circle Limit IV or Sphere with Angels and Devils.
Now Escher wasn't born until 1898, so his influence on the thing wouldn't make sense in the context of the flashback, but it's possible that the art department was thinking about Escher's work when they designed it.
