Family That Slays Together II, Season Three Finale Discussion
The last episode of the season is up on Adult Swim Video. As always, talk about it here and rate it on the capsule page after you view it. And of course the comments will contain some spoilers, so don't read them if you don't want stuff spoiled.
Even Jackson implores you not to spoil anything! Even this week's shirt club will be going up a half hour later than normal to ensure it doesn't spoil anything. It's gonna be awesome! Enjoy!

Oh my holy expletive. I... I...
That was awesome. Somewhere around the first 5 minutes my jaw dropped. And never closed.
But... just... dude. I know with Doc & Jackson, things aren't always what they seem, but I am still shocked and disturbed and kinda distressed by 'that' bit.
The wait for season 4 is gonna be effing unbearable. Aug. 23, 2008, 1:33am

I hear ya. I can't belive all that went down. It was awesome but there was one big thing that bothered me. Where was dr.o! he didn't do jack squat! he'd better have been with the order of the triad because I don't see why he wouldn't have woken up or helped the fight. Otherwise great .

Loved the twist at the end...it made sense and was hilarious.
Questions:
1) What happens to Brock now?
2) Does Sgt. Hatred really become the new bodyguard?
3) 24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4) HELPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5) Are the boys no longer immortal as all the clones have been used up? And why would you send a bunch of clone slugs out there anyway?
Man, I can't wait for season 4. And the season 3 DVD, although that's less of an issue. Maybe Season 3 will come out on Blu-Ray? Hopefully? Possibly? Maybe? Aug. 23, 2008, 2:02am

I think The Monarch went all in, with his hatred -- not even Dr. G could stop him in *his* headlong rush toward destruction.
A power deathblossom suit? With no mobility?
Knowing he was entering a trap, and feeling that sacrificing his minions was worth it?
Going directly against the OSI must violate some Guild protocol, so even the joy of going full out against a now-vulnerable Dr. Venture will be lost.
And as for Sgt. Hatred -- i know Brock didn't say squat about seeing him at OSI, but General *Traister* not saying anything? I know, I know, next season...
As for Molotov's and Hunter's play, all I can say is: Civil War.
If you've got independent assassins being capable and efficient for cash, there's no stopping scores from being settled between the Guild and OSI -- with the protagonists smack dab in the middle.
"Prelude to a Kill" indeed, Mr. Publick. Aug. 23, 2008, 2:10am

Don't be too sure that 24 is gone for good. Ever notice how many henchmen look and sound JUST LIKE 24?
Insane theory: The Mighty Monarch perfected cloning in college, which Dr. Venture stole, thus earning the Monarch's eternal hatred and oath of vengeance. And, you know, Henchmen are hard to find sometimes, so you might as well clone them. Aug. 25, 2008, 5:09am

impossible for several reasons:
1) the T-shirt, which you didn't see when you wrote this
2)Venture learned cloning from his father most likely, as per Brisby's interest in the Incredible Mr. Brisby
3)I think it was pretty clear that that was 24s head 21 caught at the end there
Then again, they have thrown us off at times before. Aug. 25, 2008, 8:06am

I'd support the idea that 24's head actually wasn't.
All OSI had the same faces and all henchmen had 24's face.
21 was still calling for 24 but it would be *that* far fetched to think that having a 24-like (not 24's) head falling on the knees of 21 when he calls 24 is a trick.
proof :
we didn't see 24's head being ripped off when the car exploded.
there's been several 24-like heads severed during the fight (straight from the beginning of the battle, then when a henchman launches the Monarch's ultimate death-dispensing suit.
So it's all in our head that the process of associating still moments (24 in front of car - car explosion - 21 calling 24 - one head falling on 21) to recreate it as
21 saw 24 die in the car explosion.
This is another way to think about it :
21 and 24 are fed up with serving the Monarch (as we have been witnessing since the last 3-4 episodes, they avoid all engagement).
24 uses this opportunity to escape service by being presumed dead. 21 will desert arguing he's shocked and can't resume henchmanship now that his pal is dead.
I also strongly suppose the bomb was triggered by the dwarves because they hate 21 and 24 as we have already seen.
Hmmmmm... what I wonder most is : will brock have time to grow a new mullet before the beginning of season 4 ????????? I can't find sleep because of this now !! Aug. 28, 2008, 9:07pm

but if you remember, the henchman in dia de los dangerous that shot speedy had that voice that is eerily similar to ray romano. either jackson and doc hadn't come up with 24 and 21 (which is the case, due to their real first appearance didn't happen until episodes later, and that forementioned episode was the first episode of the first season) or 24 just decided to shave off the mustache so he wouldn't be recognizable. we all know that the monarch has a tendency to shoot his henchmen with his darts

21 and 24 didn't really exist as actual characters until season two. In season 1 they were just kind of the two generic henchmen who accompanied the Monarch to certain places. If you look at the credits for Return to Spider-Skull Island they are even still listed as 'Monarch Henchman 1' and 'Monarch Henchman 2'. 24 also got a slight character redesign (his chin) between seasons 1 and 2 to help distinguish him from regular henchmen.

Well, we were all wrong, weren't we? No Jonas Sr., no Dermott, not even Phantom Limb.
A good episode, not great. I'd say about Buddy System level. As I said, lots of loose ends and incongrueties. I thought Rusty was going to turn all the slugs into Venturesteins. I doubt that was 24. Probably one of the dozens of others that look like him. Or they'll clone him. People love him too much to be gone forever. Anyone else think 'retard strength' during Hank's speech?
I'm not worried about Brock quitting. The Monarch 'quit' arching Rusty and they kept him in alright until he could do it by the rules.
Biggest issue: If OSI wasn't after Brock, why did the car go after him? And who sent the assassins after him? It's not as if anyone knew Brock was going to use the termination order at that time.
As for Hunter, I can see him being in with Mol for a while. Aug. 23, 2008, 2:38am

Something just hit me: what if our little Dean is so "sensitive" because initially he was the sister Dawn that old doc Rusty, who wasn't able to quite to get the cloning technique down (dabbling in cloning,) had to switch sexes.
Also, did anyone else think that Dean's heart attack was real, some sort of side.effect of the clonin'? Aug. 24, 2008, 10:45pm

*Mol* warned him in ASSASSINANNY 911 about sticking with an assignment too long; wasn't that also the episode when Hunter stole millions of dollars? Sounds like seed money to me....
Mol had access to Adrienne (didn't Brock get picked up by OSI, only to be pushed out while the OSI car was running?); she could have bypassed security and set the computer with Hunter's instructions to 'mishear' Brock's request at any time; it also might not have been beyond Hunter's skills to create post-hypnotic suggestions in Billy during his memory wipe, to point to the buried boxes, triggering Brock's inquiries about ORB to Adrienne.
Mol could have been spending the intervening time recruiting, and researching the weaknesses within the Guild and OSI. She knew Brock would be her most lethal enemy, but she also knew that his greatest skills would be deployed in defending the Ventures. Deploying Adrienne (and the transmitted kill orders to OSI) would eventually kill him, kill the Ventures, or otherwise separate him from the family. He hasn't killed since he was a teenager; what else does he know how to do?
Without a license to kill, Brock's emotionally vulnerable; Mol could hire him, use him, kill him, but in any case a Brock without a mission might as well be dead.
No matter how hateful her actions were, I respect her for doing what all the antagonists could not: Destroy the Venture family from within. No more clones; no more leeway from OSI to make more. No more protection from antagonists. Will Venture back out of the Guild arching program or find a less capable bodyguard unwilling to tolerate his quirks? (By the by, Treister's 'no public killings' beef is bullshit; Brock's murders at the shopping mall alone in HATE FLOATS would kick him out of the OSI) Doc's going to have to find the strength he used to have as a boy adventurer, to save what he has left. He won't be perfect, but his mistakes will no longer be covered up by a sympathetic, paternal hulk. He's truly on his own, now.
He might make a call to a certain Doctor, with a magical murder bag.... Aug. 23, 2008, 3:24am

The wait for season 4 is gonna be tough with the end of the episode. Venture Bros without Brock? That's like Star Wars without Han Solo, or the night Taco Bell ran out of beans. I was super pissed. Great episode though. Loved the helper interrogation scene. I'm sure season 4 will set some things right.

i still have to watch again but i was disappointed that not only didn't it answer any questions, but it raised a million more! i think they got way too ambitious for a 13 episode season. still really funny, with the exception of that hank sister joke. was that lame or just me? i swear i heard crickets.
also, hatred has become one of my favorite characters, he's so great here. and i was more sad about helper dying than 24.
all and all i think this season was the best so far with the exception of the two part finale. if they wanted to end on a million cliffhangers and unanswered questions it would've been way more beautiful to end with ORB, in my opinion. at least that had me excited for what comes next.
anyway, sorry to be such a downer, but you can understand my high expectations after last season's finale! still among the best shows out there! Aug. 23, 2008, 2:53am

I wouldn't worry about helper, remember escape to the house of mummies? he was shrunken then stepped on. I'm sure he'll survive. 24, on the other hand, unless they're looking to pull a major twist, like shyamalan-sized twist, 24 is gone for good.

Nobody stays dead except for Uncle Ben Parker and....who the hell ever the other two were. Jason Todd? Dunno. And I think he even came back to life.
Screw it, who cares really? They're just setting up for another big season.
I really liked this episode, it was a return to form after a season of furrowing my brow a lot.
I'm getting a little tired of Sgt Hatred. Maybe it's just his voice, I dunno.
Good news: Looks like Jackson and Doc neatly wrote their way out of the dilemma of "Why should the audience care if Hank and Dean die or not, cuz there's a shytload of clones ready in the wings to replace them?"
Not only are all of the clone slugs dead but OSI apparently takes a VERY dim view of cloning in general. Meaning Rusty's clone factory is out of business.
Good News: Rusty seems to be shaking off his cloak of failure...sort of. Maybe.
At the very least we see why he's so f-ed up in the head: A 10-year old being pushed into murder by this father? Wow...
Limb, ORB, Molotov and the Blackhearts, Dermott, the Moppets. Plenty of fodder for 4th season.
Hunter playing Brock for a fool? Either that or he knew that Brock would mow those 3 uber-assassins down like so many hay fields.
And Brock quitting. For how long?
Hm, Rusty 'quit' too, until Brock dragged him back from that rave. Aug. 23, 2008, 3:17am

A few random thoughts on "The Family That Slays Together, Part II"
Adult Swim better green light a season 5 pretty soon or Jackson and Doc are going to spend all of season 4 tying up loose ends.
Did I detect a bit of Elvis in The Cleaner
Who pushed the detonate button on the explosives attached to H.E.L.P.E.R.? Dr. MTM left the remote in the cocoon. Was it one of the moppets or someone else?
Patriotic Guy isn't Teddy Roosevelt. :(
Brock with a shaved head looks a bit like Ben Bailey the Host of Cash Cab on the Discovery Channel.
http://www.therealbenbailey.com/
Could there really be a missing Venture Sister named Dawn? I know this seems like a throw away joke but, Jackson and Doc have a way of turning throwaway jokes into full blown characters.
How will 21 survive without his running buddy 24. I foresee a "Search for Spock" type episode. Perhaps. 21 seeks Orpheus' help in resurrecting his dead buddy.
I can't believe Hunter turned on Brock like that. All the father figures on the show are pretty horrible. Aug. 23, 2008, 4:55am

I rewatched the last quarter of the episode a couple times and the only ones who could have pushed the detonator (aside from a random henchman wandering around the Cocoon, which would be lame) was the moppets. They are totally absent from the episode after the Monarch tells them to ready his battle suit, and Dr. Girlfriend didn't take the remote with her when she left the Cocoon. They're also really the only ones with a reason to push the button at that point in the episode because nobody else really wants 24 dead.

Good catch on the detonator button. I didn't even think about that.
Brock must have figured out he was set up. That's why he quit. Keep the family away while he goes after Molotov and Hunter. That'll probably be the plot of the first episode or two of season 4. My guess anyway.
Who killed 24? It's like a who shot JR thing, huh. Hope they don't go that way with it.
Rusty can always create more clone slugs. He could even clone 24. Hope not, but he could. Aug. 26, 2008, 4:31am

Awesome, Awesome finale. Those who were expecting Showdown at Cremation Creek Ver. 2.0 should have known better. This was a different season, different issues, and I love how it was played out. Good spots:
-The Cleaner
-Mol's casual wear.
-Dr. Mrs. The Monarch seducing HELPeR
-Dawn!
-The Clone Wars
-Hatred wants to be their new bodyguard (watch out of the bad touching, Hank.)
-24's head lands on 21.
-Mol and Gather's entire plan. More specifically, the fact that it actually makes sense.
HELPeR, of course, can be rebuilt. They've done it before. But I kinda want 24 to stay dead. It would be funnier if some new Henchman showed up that sounded like 24 and, like every other Henchman, looked like 24. Aug. 23, 2008, 4:57am

I'll miss 24, there's no doubt, but I think he's definitely staying dead. Either he or 21 had to die after all the "main character" talk. Now this sets up a whole new attitude for 21 in the next season. Maybe he becomes paranoid and stays in the background as much as he can, avoiding danger. Maybe he quits henching altogether. Who knows, maybe he becomes the Viceroy, out for revenge for his dead friend. There are plenty of possibilities.

Death is not mocked, at least when it counts in the Venture universe.
21 and 24 spent an entire episode openly giving fate the finger; their modus operandi was to not be safe or slaves to protocol, and get away clean. The one time 24 follows the rules is the one time he gets trapped.
But he had several minutes to get himself free. What happened -- not even a pocket knife in his utility belt? Knew that would get him. Aug. 23, 2008, 9:00am

There's a reason all the other henchmen look exactly like 24. Sure, it probably started out that way because they were too cheap to produce anther character design just for him, but somewhere along the line they decided to take advantage of it and make 24 appear to die in a cliffhanger. Of course we know a lot of time passed between the scene where H.E.L.P.E.R. peels out with 24 stuck in the backseat, and the actual scene of his "death." Plenty of time for some absurd set of circumstances to get him free, and have some other minion wind up standing next to the car at the appointed time.

While it still means he's dead it also means he got out right before he blew up! and the moppets definitly pushed the trigger. and as for hunter my faviorite line from him was from the invisible hand of fate:"The village people just called and they want you to go "bleep"in kill yourselves you prancy bastards!"

I haven't even seen the episode and I'm already dissapointed. Why? No Fucking Phantom Limb and the Dean/Triana thing went nowhere again. Why did they take the Best character out of the show??? I was waiting the whole season for him to show up. I thought he would obtain the ORB and use it to regain his power in the finale. And they didn't do anything with Dean and Triana this season. I mean the 2nd season lacked development between the two but this season basically forgot about them. That's whack that Triana was only in 2 episodes. She would be a great character if they would give her some screentime. Are they ever going to do something with them??? They sure do a lot with Dr.V & Brock. Also dissapointing was Dr.Orpheus cause he was only in 4 episodes and I was expecting Quymn to return. Maybe when I see this episode I'll feel better but right now the fact the Phantom Limb never came back is killing me..............................

A lot to digest this season ...
The Order of the Triad seems to have broken apart, due to Orpheus's crummy leadership ... but if Rusty Venture decides it's time to create a NEW TEAM VENTURE to take the place of Brock? Those three will certainly have jobs ... plus Pete White the hacker, Billy Quizboy the trivial info and code breaker ... there's definitely the makings of a new Team Venture.
Dean and Triana ... plenty of time for furthering that plot. This season didn't do much with it, but every episode Triana thinks Dean is a little cuter, so it is progressing.
Brock with no job? Where's he gonna go? That seems to be the big question. Hunter and Molotov love him, they hate OSI, they were willing to use Brock to destroy some things that were in their way, with plenty of collateral damage. I wonder if they'll attempt to get him to join the Blackhearts? I mean ... the guy is great at killing. And like someone said, OSI vs. the Guild via assassins? Brock has been caught between them a long time ... being able to murder tons of them? He might even be down with it.
General Traister isn't Teddy Roosevelt ... but his SHIELD outfit and eye-patch scream Nick Fury. And it seems like a "Marvel joke" about Nick Fury's seeming immortality and super old age - he probably wouldn't look as good as he does. The heart attacks. ETC ...
Monarch's gambit will have repercussions with the Guild ... of course he's down to a handful of henchmen, so all he's really got left are the Moppets, 21 and Doctor Ex-Girlfriend Mrs. The Monarch ... doubt they'll restock his minions after this move against OSI.
Where's Phantom Limb going to go? In the first episode of the season, we saw him get some payback ... odds are either he's a rogue bent on revenge against all those who have done him wrong, or hey, maybe he's a Blackheart as well ... same for Baron Underbheit - no job, no money. And hey, maybe Girl Hitler will be a huge fan of the Blackhearts.
I still say Dermott is Hatred's son, not Brock's ... Hatred was definitely applying to a job at OSI again. However, that doesn't mean he won't get the OBVIOUS assignment of Operation Rusty's Blanket.
What about the old Team Venture? Action Man isn't that old ... Col. Gentleman isn't that dead ... Kano has some secrets ... and what ever happened to Jonas Sr., Gentleman's ex-wife, and so forth? And what about their "League of Villains" under Scaramantula?
And then finally, what about the Victorian Venture Guild and beginnings of the Guild of Calamitous Intent? You gotta know that David Bowie/Tesla/Shapeshifting Immortal Who Is Other Historical Figures is going to be making moves in the background ...
I have a feeling we'll see a lot of comparing/contrasting of the varying generations of Heroes/Villains and Ventures over Season 4 ... and quite probably ... a time-travel episode.
There's no doubt the key players in the Venture world have shifted this season, though ...
So many more characters to keep wondering about now ... Aug. 23, 2008, 7:24am

If there is a Guild/OSI/Blackhaws conflict, the split between the Guild and OSI has to come through documented violations of their treaties... and even though The Monarch can suspect, he has no proof of OSI involvement in JJ's use of above level 8 excessive force. We know the Lepidopterists were involved, and that they work for the head of OSI, but The Monarch, if he failed to do any snooping either at Spider Skull Island or the OSI plane, has nothing he can take to the Guild.
The irony? The one man who could prove that OSI directly intervened to break Guild rules is Brock Samson... and he's probably wishing something stronger than a pox on both their houses.
As for a new Team Venture, none of the potential members would outlast a sniper attack. If we want to know why the VB team avoided Brock using guns, it's that such force would result in escalation as retaliation -- and if guns are used all the time, battles are over pretty damn fast. The entrance of the Blackhawks signifies real world menace, fast, hard and beautiful though it may be. The world Brock's mayhem held back is now perched on Rusty's doorstep, and it's anybody's guess whether OSI would even consider him useful enough to save.... should any of those soldiers get a directive by Treister to search the Venture compound for any unusual energy signatures, or any obvious locations for safes.
If all bets are off regarding the Guild/OSI detente, will the ORB go in play -- and who follows the bouncing ball? Aug. 23, 2008, 8:57am

Here's the deal. At the end Brock figures out that Mol set the whole thing up. She was always there at critical times. He also suspect Gathers as all of his info and assistance led to this outcome. Hell, he TOLD Brock the OSI was after him, and Brock now knows that was a lie.
Brock "quits" at the end for one reason. He wants the Mol and Gathers to believe he is rogue so they will accept him into their crew. He intends to infiltrate them and destroy them from the inside. Revenge for being used to execute their plan, and for putting his family in harm's way. Aug. 23, 2008, 7:01pm

Wow. Where do you get all this stuff, CG? Honestly? The reason Brock doesn't use guns is because he's THAT much of a badass. This is a humorous character quirk that has nothing to do with the plot and the blackhearts don't signify "real world menace", they signify classic all-female assassin organization. It's no more "real world" than anything else in the Venture universe. Your weird existential theory is interesting, but you are taking all of this WAY too seriously.
I'm sure season 4 will be hilarious, just like this season was! Until then it is fun to speculate but remember when Jackson said to "stop looking so deep into everything and just have fun"? I think some of us need to heed his words. Aug. 25, 2008, 10:13pm

*This* is where I got it from, HATE FLOATS:
"Phantom Limb: It seems that our mutual friend the Monarch has himself a death wish. He's operating in full costumed aggression without a Guild license. His henchmen are using level five offensive weapons for a level one threat (no offense to Dr. Venture), and he's kidnapped my girlfriend."
Level 5 weapons = guns.
It's part of the Guild/OSI treaty that guns aren't used by those arching someone on Dr. Venture's level.
Jackson built the universe; I'm just remembering what he did, unlike some people. Aug. 26, 2008, 10:15am

And nice of you to pick on me damn near always, you callous snarkmaster, whilst you ignore a post that spells the real world intermix out -- I agreed with his premise, despite the emotional directives:
"The name of the game here is to put the superhero, Johnny Quest, adventure series motif into the REAL WORLD. Take it out of television and stuff it where we all live. And things don't happen according to formula in the real world. We don't always get what we want in the real world.
Keep in mind, we're not dealing with some hack stand-up comedian or Seth "freakin" MacFarlane here. These are true artists, craftsmen. Trust them. "
The lasting image of this was Race Bannon dead, as children played with his corpse and parachute. People who take the risks associated with adventures die. Aug. 26, 2008, 10:22am

I actually quite like the title of "callous snarkmaster". Hehe. Anyway, the only reason I "pick on you", CG, is that you draw these radical, detailed musings that are based loosely on ideas from the show and pass them off as fact by using absolutes and fancy vocabulary. That and the fact that these very musings are painfully overthought. Even though some of what you have to say is totally valid, it gets lost in a sea of pretension and what you think the Venture world SHOULD be every time.
As you quoted in your message above, these ARE true artists. So take your own advice and trust him! He did tell all of us directly (well, through a bump) to "stop looking so deep into everything".
Also, I do agree that the idea of the show is to take Johnny Quest-esque characters and put them in a more realistic setting, but what you don't seem to understand is that this device is played for laughs, and VB being a cartoon never takes itself TOO seriously.
The scene where Race dies does illustrate this point beautifully. Especially when he shits himself. It's a picture of one of the great badasses in adventure fiction dying a humiliating death, which in Venture terms spells comedy! Aug. 26, 2008, 9:38pm

Your studied mien of jolly sociopathology is also overthought -- if everything in the Venture series that is shocking or gripping is also hilarious, then character does not matter, character development does not matter and tellling a story that changes with time does not matter. I think you're wrong, and the more you confront me, the less chance there will be that I will change my mind.
If you get to embrace your post-TDK Joker persona, I get to embrace as much pretention as I can muster, to fight your point of view. If words are my armament, then I will use them and use and use them until your ADD-addled style gets bored and you try to bully someone who will bend.
I don't seek your posts out; I only respond when attacked. So, obviously, *you're* the one with the problem, and I will never call it anything but griefing. Aug. 26, 2008, 10:21pm

Where? When?
"Where's Phantom Limb going to go?"
He's a rogue with the entire Guild on his ass, he's laying low, picking on a retired supervillian so that he feels big and then hides like the rat he is.
"I still say Dermott is Hatred's son, not Brock'"
But Dermott even SAID he was Brock's kid;. Aug. 24, 2008, 6:48pm

I don't believe that 24 died.
1. We couldn't hear him say anything before the explosion
2. He looks very similar to other Monarch henchmen (as opposed to 21)
3. There was a LONG time between when Helper stole the car and when it drove onto the battlefield
4. Notice that he got out on the wrong side (he was seat belted into the left side, not the right) Aug. 23, 2008, 8:35am

If you watch the scene where HELPeR is driving wildly into the crowd you see 24 sitting in the middle back seat, yelling and not buckled up, so he probably got the belt unbuckled between the car leaving the Cocoon and driving into the crowd of henchmen. There's then the long pause between the car stopping and the car exploding, but right before the explosion 24 gets out, waves and then the car explodes. I don't even know why another henchman would get in the car like that. It's possible of course, but I guess we'll find out eventually.

My biggest interest is seeing what becomes of henchman 21 in season 4.
He's infatuated with Dr. Girlfriend/MTM, the Monarch was directly responsible for the events that led to the death of his best friend, and he's expressed interest in becoming his own supervillain in season 2.
He's sure to become the Viceroy in season 4! Aug. 23, 2008, 9:22am

But the monarch's only partialy responsible! Sure he put the bomb on him but theres were only two people left in the caccon to detonate the charge after dr.mrs.the monarch left it there.....Tim tom an kevin! They wanted revenge and got it. and maybe they also thought they could kill the monarch or at least his "two cronies".

My own personal fan wank /crackpot theory is that the second Brock from "Escape to the House of Mummies, Part II." Who I have dubbed "SCUBA Brock" is the originator of the "Guild of Bodyguards" and giver of the death order regarding its use.
SCUBA Brock realized that there couldn't be two Brock Samsons running around in the present. SCUBA Brock used the Hand of Osiris to travel back to the time of Archimedes, became his bodyguard and created the "guild of bodyguards" to protect the ORB.
Brock would enjoy living in the ancient world where everybody fought with swords which are basically big knives and there are no guns.
Besides who else is a cool enough badass to create a "Guild of Body Guards" than "Brock Fucking Samson"? Aug. 24, 2008, 5:04am

It's a little sad to think of Henchman 21 without 24 always backing him up. It might be interesting if 21 quits, goes to work for Sgt. Hatred, and Hatred (and his troops) end up being Dr. Venture's new bodyguards. I've always liked Sgt. Hatred, when he's not talking about young boys. Ewwww.
Helper being blown up was pretty horrible, too. He's like the unwanted child that never got any respect. It might be pretty interesting if there was another version of Helper for his mind to go into, kind of like the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica.
It sounds like Dr. Venture has had enough of cloning his kids. Which is nice, he'll be taking their safety more seriously. Of course, there's a hell of a lot of room at the Venture compound, he could always start up again secretly. Who cares if the OSI don't like it, since they aren't in charge of him, just his bodyguard.
I was hoping for a little more resolution of the Dean/Triana relationship. Ah well, there's always next season. And I'd love to see more Order of the Triad next season too. Hell, it'd be cool if the OSI hired the Order to be Dr. Venture's bodyguards!
This season turned out to be a bit of a letdown from last season, but it still ended up pretty okay. I'm glad there's not going to be such a long wait for season 4 as there was between season 2 and 3. No year long wait for renewal. Thank God. I wouldn't be able to stand it. Aug. 23, 2008, 10:05am

Re: Venture being serious. It's already started.
"You only live once."
That line both established the end of the cloning as a plot device, now and forever, and Venture's long suppressed sense of parenthood and responsibility beginning to come to the surface.
While from a certain standpoint, it would be easy to reestablish the status quo at this point (Doc rebuilds cloning facility, Monarch gets away for pretty much EVERYTHING he did in Season 3 with the Guild, Venture twins go back to being dopey fools and Brock comes back), I think it's fairly obvious that Hammer and Publick don't want to go back to that status quo. It's done. It's played out. Now it's time for something completely different with these people. "Cremation Creek" was the culmination of what they wanted to do with this system within the rules that already existed. Season 3 pretty much spent most of it's time dismantling those rules one by one, essentially kicking away several of the 'plot crutches' that have kept this ridiculous system afloat for so long. Just as Season 3 was way different from 2, I think 4 will be quite different from both, especially given that Hammer and Publick have both said they didn't want to approach their two season deal as simply "one season in two parts". S4 will be distinct, but with all the dangling threads left at this point, I can't see how there will be a chance for any sort of 'filler' episodes next season. This will likely be very much more continuity and arc heavy than any season yet...
As such, I can't say yet whether I'm disappointed or jaw droppingly amazed at Season 3, as I think it will only really be truly appreciated once season 4 comes out to see how the narrative flows from this season to the next, and whether certain plot threads brought up and seemingly abandoned (Phantom Limb, Dermott, ORB, Jonas Sr., possibly Killinger) get satisfying follow ups to have made the effort of bringing it up to start with worthwhile... It does appear that this episode has set up the theme for Season 4--internecine conflict. Team Venture is sundered with the departure of Brock (and destruction of HELPeR--who I'm pretty sure is Killed Off For Real this time). The titular Venture Brothers are quite likely looking at a very dark time, as Hank is becoming much more obviously (and dangerously) foolhardy, dangerous (to himself, if not others), and deluded (as it appears he's completely bought 21's claims of Hank's immortality with his ridiculous amount of risk-taking as of late)... And Dean? Very early in the 4th season, I imagine a rather unsubtle point will be made that Rusty is doing to Dean more or less exactly what Jonas did to him, only whereas Rusty was just wrecked by Jonas' appallingly bad upbringing, Dean is close to being destroyed.
The latter half of season 3 has, after a fashion 're-introduced' a lot of characters, like Billy and White, giving them backstory, and even linchpinning more than a couple of episodes on the characters. It is possible that a new Team Venture may be in the making, but I suspect that it's not the OSI or the Guild that they're going to be facing... they might have to deal with the original Team Venture (and maybe JJ) once word gets out about recent events (Orb, the cloning facility, etc.), they might decide that Rusty's crossing the line from incompetent slacker to a potential danger to be dealt with (if for no other reason than to protect Jonas' public image which is probably going to take a beating if some of this seasons' revelations ever goes public). Even if this scenario is a bit far-fetched, I don't think it's too much to predict that Rusty's going to confront his father in a very real, material way next season, either personally, or by proxy of his father's remaining associates.
Obviously, the Guild/OSI stalemate is simply no longer sustainable, the same rules no longer applying to the world, a fact pounded home with 24's (apparent) death. With certain wildcards waiting in the wings now (ORB, Phantom Limb, the Blackhearts, etc.) that will only destabilize this situation further.
As for the Monarch. I think others are right in pointing out that the Monarch is royally frakked now. There's no way the Guild will replace his henchmen in any plausible way, now, and he, too, will likely be forced to deal with the 'real world' consequences of his actions, instead of relying on the Guild to hide him from it anymore. One critical question is going to be Who pushed the button? We were meant to notice it left in the chair, so it's obvious that there was foul play involved here. Obviously the Monarch or DMtM didn't press it. It's likely to have been the Moppets, but not certain. Speaking of the Moppets, I suspect their 'move' against the Monarch is probably going to happen pretty early on, as this would be the best time to strike: Defeated and depleted in both resources, henchmen and spirit, this is probably his lowest moment, even beating his prison stint, since this was supposed to be his coup de tat: Ultimate victory defined by Venture's head on a stick. Instead, he was totally humiliated.
It's at least going to be interesting to see what shakes out from this... On the good side, this should mean that we'll be getting some answers come next season. We surely can't take any more questions at this point.

It's been implied that the Monarch's recruits come from kidnappings(24), the street (I used to be hooked on crack cocaine) and wherever he can get them. The Monarch is a rich sociopath who has apparently taken possession of Phantom Limb's resources (forfeit to the guild when he betrayed them) as well as his own deceased parent's trust fund. The monarach's minions aren't necessarily guild supplied. 21 and 24 had a whole recrutiment scheme rehearsed that they implemented when they realized that most of the other minions had fled to find work with other villains.

Simple Math.
S1 < S2 < S3
For all you shmucks who think Season 2 was better than Season 3, put down the crack pipe and rewatch VB from Dia de los Dangerous! to The Family that Slay Pt 2. You will notice that every episode is a small step above the one previously.
Seriously. stop bitching about no Phantom Limb, or the fact that Dean and Trianna didn't have any super-hot great action action action! Aug. 23, 2008, 4:14pm

Which is fantastic! Mystery keeps the show fresh. For another example, see Lost.
Every episode this season was gold, start to finish. Thats the most important thing. Look at the season on an episode by episode basis. Each one was fantastic. The mythology is background and to keep the fans speculating and debating.
Well played Jackson and Doc. Well played. Aug. 23, 2008, 7:40pm

24's arrogant, I can't be killed, I'm invincible ass is dead. It's obvious cause 21, 24, and The Monarch were starting to think they couldn't die and now JP and DH have proved that they can. Whoever says Season 2 is better than 3 is a fucking idiot. Season 3 kicked 2's ass big time. Just look at Dr.Quymn. That episode by itself beat every other episode. I'm curious to see where this show goes now. It's gonna be hard playing the waiting game after such a great season. They should give JP and DH an emmy and stop giving these gay-ass shows emmys. All I gotta say is GO TEAM VENTURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If 24 actually is dead, and it's possible that he isn't, then the shirt club shirt, which according to jackson contains a spoiler is a... RIP #24 shirt? If that's the shirt, and I buy it, and they bring 24 back as soon as season 4 starts, that'd be lame.
But what other blog-post worthy spoiler could they fit on a shirt? An "It turns out Brock wasn't actually wanted by the OSI but rather it was a trick by Molotov and Hunter to make Molotov's black hearts the top assassins" shirt? Aug. 23, 2008, 8:40pm

This has nothing to do with the episode at hand, but I just have to say something. Yesterday I was driving around for work and saw someone wearing a Venture Brothers T shirt, and I screamed "VENTURE BROTHERS!!" at him very loudly (to the detriment of my throat), and instead of getting a return "YEAH!!" or "F$%#ING A!" or anything, I got a very confused look. Needless to say I was disappointed.

The head that landed on 24 had a cleft on the chin, the only distinguishing factor between 21 and the rest of the henchmen. That was 21 that got blown up, not Speedy or number 2, it was 21. I can see them pulling him out of the grave though, but this episode seems to be Publick and Hammer saying "We're fuckin' serious now. No kidding around. Someone dies, they're dead."

1. Wig out and become a hermit knowing he is not invincible,
2. Wig out and not give a crap about living anymore and do stupid heroic acts,
3. Wig out, and under delusion, become the Vicroy and attempt to take Dr. MTM as his own,
4. or Wig out and go back home to his mother?
I'm pretty sure Wigging out is in order for our tubby henchman. Aug. 24, 2008, 11:30am

"Catclops, Girl Hitler, and Manic 8-Ball all survived an explosion, and there were tigers involved then! I wouldn't rule out anything for Season Four."
like their return. they and Underbheit needs more screen time! and while youre at it White Static.
i hope the Unterland episode happens like this:
catclops ups the ante with his new dog shit burning on the doorstep by making a full on "burn the reichstag" false alarm where the compassion of the world turns a teary eye to Unterland. re: 911 the u.s. of america's tragedy black ops situation starring wtc 7 and the pentagon hole as whoopee soap.
the whole Unterland on fire problem was organized simply to draw attention to an indoor roller coaster ride with tied together shopping carts taken from a grounded cargo plane (magnetized) sucked from the sky. this ride is probably the only income dire Unterland will ever have since the export of wolf meat has been banned world wide. am i right here? anyone else see this as a future fact?
21 plotting revenge is going to be priceless, plastic hulk fists on!, star trek comminicator battery in!
if there are 2 Action Man characters "action action action!!!!", there are probably 2 Brocks. you can tell them apart by the wings on the shoulder tattoo.
final episode thoughts: moppets hate everyone but dr gf. they want to tear that cocoon chain of command apart and see monarch fail, he did, and they clinched it even more. helper has backup files (easier access), like the bros, so he'll prob be back if there is an office chair and a air conditioning fan lying around. I think many of you are reading too much into this. From what I have learned watching this series over the years it's this: People that die don't like to stay dead, and if there's something they didn't touch base on this season (Dermott, Dean/Triana, ORB, Phantom Limb, Dr Venture Sr) will almost certainly be a part of Season 4. There's only so much you can do in 13 Episodes. Besides, who's to say this isn't clever storytelling on Publick's part to ensure several more seasons of Venture Brothers by leaving so many unanswered questions. We got a lot of back story on some characters that will no doubt play a big role in the next season (Billy Quizboy/Phantom Limb), and I bet next season there will be even more backstories (Dr O, Sgt Hatred), so if anything this episode has me psyched about next season. And as for the Venture clones, well I didn't expect them to do much, seeing as how they were unarmed, so no surprise they get demolished. Will be interesting to see how 21 deals with 24 and how the Ventures deal without Brock/Helper. Another great season.

The important thing to remember with the loose ends is that this is the first season where they knew they were going to have one right after it. Season 1 and 2 tied up most (though not all) story threads because they weren't sure if they was going to be a season after that. This time we know there's a season four and we've known it since season 3 was greenlit. Not every bit of backstory or secret has to be revealed right away because there's more time to reveal them.

I think the mostsatisfying thing about this episode, for me, is how completely unsatisfying most of you found it. It is not Doc and Jackson's mission to give you everything you want, it is to craft a story. And if they don't know what they're doing, they at least fake it better than most.
The purpose of this finale, and season three in general, was simply to eradicate all the rules. To let us know that characters that we absolutely love can be killed at a moment's notice. That the structure we so rely on can dissipate in an instant. The floor will fall out, and we're just hanging on by our fingernails.
All the comments I've been reading this season, all the speculations, where each thread could go, what could happen next, almost never has it been what we expected. Is it because they're trying to trick us? Not at all. It's because we're expecting them to play by the rules. We look at this the way we would look at our favorite comic book, or a primetime drama. We expect them to play the game. We forget the whole point of the thing.
The name of the game here is to put the superhero, Johnny Quest, adventure series motif into the REAL WORLD. Take it out of television and stuff it where we all live. And things don't happen according to formula in the real world. We don't always get what we want in the real world.
Keep in mind, we're not dealing with some hack stand-up comedian or Seth "freakin" MacFarlane here. These are true artists, craftsmen. Trust them.
Also, 24 is dead. Deal with it. Helper, on the other hand, has suffered many strong blows. The fact that he had a stronger hand on episodes recently could go either way. They've demolished him and brought him back unscathed, like so much Kenny, many times before. But, really, he's never had so much of a hand in things that he would be noticed if he were gone. 24's death, on the other hand has more permanant, immediate implications. I am sure that he is dead, and while it saddens me to see him gone, I understand the purpose of his death in terms of the story. It's not what I want, but it's what the series needs.
As of now, all bets are off. And that is why this is maybe the best episode of Venture Brothers ever. Aug. 25, 2008, 9:46am

Can the paternalism, Sparky. If this is more than a soap opera, then these plot shifts have consequences, and people will have strong feelings about them. Trust *them*, why don't you?
The season's figurative corpse isn't cold or buried yet, but you want to tell us what's right to feel, and what's wrong. I thought the only thing that has a hold on us to do that is the show itself? Those feelings should serve as evidence enough of how well Jackson and Doc have written this season. So, your admonitions are premature and ultimately unnecessary? Yes. Deal with it.
I knew the boys played by the the Whedon rules, "make 'em laugh, make 'em cry, make 'em wait", from way back, so this is nothing new.
Went to a workshop where the authors/editors said that if all the readers liked your work, you did OK, but not great. If all hated it, you bothered them, and it was worth finding out what happened. But if half vehemently hated your work, and the other half were in love, then you had an award-winner -- you brought everyone out of their chairs and into your world. The guys have done this.
I have my complaints, but it's their world, and for 13 eps at a time they let me peek in. Aug. 25, 2008, 11:25am

Uhhhh...WOW!
It would figure that Molotov had something to do with all this, but if it is just to "eliminate the competition",it's meaningless. She wants Brock vulnerable, either to kill him or turn him. Buying off Hunter was her way in.
Funny "good cop,bad cop" routine by Monarch and Dr. MTM. Damn, that was hot! I almost forgot where I was.
24 (or 21 , I gets a tad confused that late at night) is gone. Deal with it. This is what sends the other over the edge. Viceroy a real possibility.
The moppets blew it up. Blame Tim-Tom.
"Deaths-head panoply"...really?
"tralfaz? yea, it's spanish fo 'go f**k yourself'"...the cops looked like Stroker and Hoop had a gangbang with Starsky and Hutch and Magnum popped in and lost a nut somehow.

I have a feeling that we're going to see Brock and Phantom Limb team up to take down Molotov and Hunter. Why? Because Brock and Phantom both respect the rules of the Guild and OSI, and I have a feeling they enjoy that status quo. OR maybe by joining forces, Brock and Phantom Limb bring both sides (the Guild and OSI) back together again.
- We never actually saw #1 die at the hands of Brock Samson. He could very well have been the one to push the detonator button.
- There's Dean's quote about guys coming through time every other week from the past to yell at Dad to consider. This could be the reason why the kill order for the Orb was developed. To kill Dr. Venture. The only thing is, the person who gave the order in the past wasn't specific about which Dr. Venture was to be killed. Hence, ALL Dr. Venture's are killed when they start to investigate the Orb.
Stuff to think about. Aug. 27, 2008, 2:22am

Just wanted to tackle some of these with my own thoughts...
"What the ORB does."
The ORB is there, and there it will remain until the very moment it's use is called for. What it does is of no immediate concern.
"The moppets plan from "home is where the hate is"
In order to carry out such a plan, certain potentially detrimental factors must be dealt with. One down, three to go...
"Phantom limb's current state."
The last time we saw him, he was procuring vengeance against those who wronged him. At this point, anyone who's affiliated with the guild is on his "shit list", and he will follow through to the very end by any means necessary. (Joining the OSI is not out of the question)
"Trianna's friend kim becoming a super villan"
I've been interested in seeing where this goes since V.E.N. I doubt there are any current plans to develop on it, but it's something to use if Jackson and Doc find a way to carry it out.
"The monarch's obsession with dr.venture."
It follows back to their college days, possibly even earlier. Rusty doesn't even remember the incident, which leads one to believe it was something of no major significance.
"Hank thinking he's immortal."
And no clones to fall back on. Should be interesting to see how this plays out...
"How Jonas Sr. died"
Assuming he is dead, and not currently working on a project so extreme, the very knowledge of his exsistance can prove detrimental to it's completion. (think ORB)
"How did Haines become Hatred? (assuming they are the same)"
Hatred inquired about a job with the OSI, which leads one to believe he has had no previous affiliation with them, or he changed his identity in strict secrecy.
"The identity of Dermott's mother"
The sillhouette of her in the car as she was picking up Dermott was likely that of Myra. Perhaps Brock's family ties with the Ventures goes beyond just affiliation...
"If you sick your goons on the Venture family... MY family..." -Brock Samson (Victor Echo November)
"Who killed 24?"
The moppets seem the most likely culprit(s), but that's too easy.
"Who will replace brock?"
The OSI and the Ventures are no longer on agreeable terms it seems, so it's unlikely they will expend any more resources on ensuring their safety.
"Dean on the verge of collpse from the boy adventurer life style"
"He'll come around!" -Sgt. Hatred (The Family That Slays Together, pt.2)
"What will happen to 21 post 24"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viceroy
"Will H.E.L.P.eR be rebuilt?"
I'm willing to bet Rusty has a closet full of H.E.L.P.eRs.
"Will 24 be revived?"
We have a super-scientist and a necromancer who are capable of such a feat, but under what circumstance would either be willing to revive 24? Perhaps the tyrany of the Viceroy will prove to be a bigger threat than anticipated.
"What will happen to the monarch after this fiasco?"
I see no reason for him to discontinue his pursuit of Rusty Venture, although this is sure to set him back indefinitely. There will be some tension between him and his henchmen, especially 21.
"What will the guild think of this fiasco?"
They operated within the guild's guidelines, so I'm sure it won't be a matter of their concern.
"Moltov and hunters betrayal"
They manipulated Brock, but at the same time they obviously still hold very high regard of him. I wouldn't doubt if Brock is to become affiliated with the black-hearts as a freelance mercenary. Sep. 3, 2008, 8:21pm

SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG!! Feel free to email me at myspace.com/thegroceryboys and I will give you free music. I make lots of music. :D
Once Brock Samson hit me with a car
Oh shit! I thought I dreamt that part
You just made your unavoidable death, more pathetic.
We’re gonna get our asses kicked,
No, that’s an urban myth
A loner that lacks ties to friends and family
Raise a fist for our fallen brother in arms
Those who died from explosions near cars
We’ll never forget you 24
It’s a dangerous job, but someones gotta get it done
Live by the sword we’ll die by the gun
We’ll never forget you 24 Aug. 28, 2008, 12:35pm

28.will sgt.hatred replace brock
2) Does Sgt. Hatred really become the new bodyguard?
That would be a epic disaster comedy! He is looking for some kind of order or job. Hatred's odd devices, constantly fighting off the "urges" around the boys, digging latrines to keep his mind off perversions of clone flesh.
I want to know more about Monarch bosses that he left behind. The Sea An-enemy, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Nightmare Coat and especially Helicoptro (does this guy need 40 foot clearence whenever he walks around?)
If one of those fellas showed up at Danceteria or CBGBs looking for Monarch during a Lydia Lunch or Contortions set, it would be interesting to say the least. It might also be another day in nyc if they're wearing checker rimmed sunglasses and some neon Teenage Jesus buttons.
Loved the new million butterfly darts to the face look some of the fighters were sporting. H.E.L.P.E.R.'s confession name rank and serial number was pretty awesome also.
A good point with the mothers. There really aren't any around in these episodes so much. Killed? Abandonment? Indifference due to easy cloning advancement?
Is the ORB just a really fancy paperweight generational art piece everyone is contributing to?
I am dying (ha) to see what Mummies Inc is like in season 4. People can exist dead in the Venture World for some time at least. Mummies have run rampant in House of Mummies. It takes forever for people to bleed to death when whole portions of the body have been removed.
We can all learn something from this animated narrative without going to medical school. Aug. 27, 2008, 7:54pm

20. Who is the OSI's analogue of the Sovereign?
that would probably be davy jones from the monkees. bowie is not his birth name and it really was a problem with the pre decca release, both of them bein english and all....
"During the early 1960s, Bowie was performing either under his own name or the stage name "Davie Jones", and briefly even as "Davy Jones", creating confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees. To avoid this, in 1966 he chose "Bowie" for his stage name, after the Alamo hero Jim Bowie and his famous Bowie knife.[10] During this time, he recorded singles for Parlophone under the name of The Manish Boys and Davy Jones and for Pye under the name David Bowie (and The Lower Third), all without success."
-wikipedia
there were alleyway beatings, onstage chain-spur brawls, mutant powers reverberating in cleared dance halls, all leading to home made blowgun fights at the hammersmith odeon before a crowd of 100, 000. the manish boys came after the monkees singer with hand grenades that blew off each of their arms consecutively. real mess that. politician, and horror ape, screaming lord sutch took care of the ordeal with the organization of the calamatous o.s.i. treaty blood powered mimeograph machine each paid for.

HAHA! People lose their hands a lot on VB. Who is next?
"As such, I can't say yet whether I'm disappointed or jaw droppingly amazed at Season 3, "
The animation is a million times better. I see LE TEUR! from Brocks lips at the hotel showdown in my head right now. The move out of Korea for the animation team was a great idea. Aug. 29, 2008, 12:23am
