Too funny.

I loved White's "I'm billionaire playboy, Bruce White" story.

Loved seeing Monarch and Dr. Mrs. elevate themselves up to "A-List" and fight a "real super-hero". Thought the gay jokes were smartly done and not too obnoxious. Thought the whole Action News team being the JLA type team was spot on hilarious.

Add in the hints about Sgt. Hatred and Billy's future, the history of Captain Sunshine from Season 1 (and last season's flashbacks) that were referenced, like how he thinks Monarch is invulnerable, or how Monarch had 21 & 24 kill Wonderboy ... and speaking of 21 - he's turning into super-henchman!

Strictly speaking, the irony is that Burt Ward portrayed Bruce Wayne's actual "ward". A ward is a kid whose parents died and is taken care of by a legal guardian, typically a friend of the family.

I read or saw somewhere that Burt Ward (real name Bert Gervis Jr) changed his name for "Hollywood purposes", either by "request" from the Batman producers or because he figured that Gervis was just wasn't flashy enough...and he figured that since Dick Grayson was Wayne's "youthful ward", then that'd be a perfect name! (note also the spelling change in the first name)

"You're being a little dick!"

I was disappointed and confused that tiny, currency-patterned Sgt. Hatred didn't really lead anywhere... I figured the post-credit gag would involve it in some way. Oh, well.

Pretty good 'sode. Looking forward to more!

I think the idea was to regrow him at the last second as the Monarch was walking back to his cocoon, catching him and the henchmen off guard. But Billy was having problems with the shrink ray when the time came.

I think Humongaloid moved out of the Venture compound and probably in with one of the original Team Venture members. He was asking if any of them was looking for a roomate as Hank and Dean kept trying to flush him down the f***ing toilet. "They think I'm the Tidy Bowl man!". So he probably wasn't available on short notice.

That was a Godfather reference. Michael says the same thing to Fredo ('you broke my heart') and kisses him the same way. It kind of takes on a creepier meaning when it's Captain Sunshine and Hank, but I guess that was the point. Rindi posted a YouTube of it a couple posts below.

Calling someone "legal" usually refers to 18. Based on a couple of other references in the series, the original boys would be 19 or so, but due to the difference in the age of the clones and the originals, the boys we're watching are 17 or so.

Well I think part of the reason Hank getting kissed bothered me was because it was done in a more "soft" fashion. Where as the Monarch got pissed off at Gorilla for doing things to him, Hank just seemed stunned.

There's also the fact he's a little boy getting a kiss forced upon him.

Yeah! Beat me too it. I think the joke is that Captain Sunshine acts like a pedophile but is not actually a pedophile. His "dirty secret" is that he keeps losing side-kicks. So "don't let him near my kid" means he would get the kid killed. His apparent "inappropriate protection" is his now pathological concern for the safety of his side-kicks--and his need to replace them.

Good point. I guess that's why he can't afford to tip him.

I just rewatched the scene... forgot the Monarch had taken the cab because Capt. Sunshine had dropped him off at the prison yard. Whoops.

Not sure about the lethal force thing. I think when Phantom Limb admonishes him for the handguns in Hate Floats, it's because of the threat level Dr. Venture poses. There seem to be plenty of examples of the Monarch and Co. killing people, civilian, superboy sidekick, henchman and otherwise.

Also, and this ties in with your post below re: the time lapse of the last episode, in the 8+ months that have gone by since the death of 24, 21 has been off on his own a bit, with the LARP crew, so it's possible he's been making money through his comic collection business. And he has to have SOME money... how else would he afford all those toys and low-low payments of 24.95, etc?

Now we're thinking about it too much. AHH.

It says on wikipedia that the guild allows limited force, it really depends on the arch, but odds are they don't mind a cabbie or henchman turning up dead because henchman sign up for the job through the guild or the supervillan and as long as the dead civillan isn't someone whose death would be noticed by the general populace(I'E a senator, an actor extrea extrea) their probably fine with it. and besides wonderboys death happened right before the guild dropped him, so the guild was probably more concerned witht he monarchs frame up than with him burining a sidekick.

So ok, I think the new rule is episode 2 from even numbered seasons are entertaining. After discussing this episode with the mysterious council of elders, here is my impression. Did not think the lube was for the costume

I find it strange that out of the two boys, Hank is the one who remembers Sergeant Hatred touching them inappropriately, and yet did not pick up on the obvious creepiness of Captain Sunshine.

And What is up with 21? He got all built and crazy super henchman. I understand going crazy from the loss of 24, and perhaps being all super henchman is a coping mechanism.

The mysterious council asked when he had time to work out. I conjectured that it was somewhere between almost dead mint to poor

I think what Hank and Dean remember varies from clone to clone. Not all memories get recorded, not all recorded memories get properly transferred to the new clones, etc.

As for Captain Sunshine, Hank was too caught up with hero worship and the excitement of being a superhero sidekick to spend much time thinking about the creepiness of Captain Sunshine. Also, big difference between creepiness and actual molestation.

21 does seem to be working out, and growing a beard. He no longer has 24 as his co-enabler in slack; maybe he intends to make something of himself at last?

I imagine that the only memories that didn't get transferred from clone to clone would be those pertaining to the actual day in which each clone died. Each night the beds would record what memories the boys acquired each day.

Yes but you've got 20 year old tech (punch cards, reel-to-reel tapes, etc) preserving those memories and transferring said memories, and I'll bet Dr. Venture doesn't understand all of the technology very well (it was his Dad's work, after all) so I wouldn't be surprised if each clone turns out slightly different as to what it does or does not remember.

Just wikipedia-ed it

"A seed round, sometimes known as a friends and family round or seed funding, is a securities offering whereby one or more parties that have some connection to a new enterprise invest the funds necessary to start the business so that it has enough funds to sustain itself for a period of development until it reaches either a state where it is able to continue funding itself, or has created something in value so that it is worthy of future rounds of funding. Seed money refers to the money so invested."

I also find it odd that they'd have two pedophile characters on the show at once. South Park already did a NAMBLA episode. Is it possible that he's just misunderstood, like still a big kid inside himself? And / or he's just being way too overprotective of Hank because of what happened to the previous Wonderboy (or Wonderboys maybe)? Maybe the lube really was for the costume (the Monarch didn't have any on when he went down the chute. Wedgie!) and maybe the slumber party was just that. Captain Sunshine seemed shocked and taken aback by the Monarch's comments at the end. I'm probably wrong, but I just think Doc and Jackson are too creative to be redundant like this.

I want to think Captain Sunshine isn't actually a pedophile, because nothing ever seemed to happen outside of that weird kiss at the end. Hank was the 4th Wonderboy though, the statue in front of Sunshine's house said "Wonderboy III", so it's possible he was being crazy and overprotective.

It was certainly left far more ambiguous than Sgt. Hatred ever was though.

My impression of the episode was that Captain's Sunshine was not a pedophile. I saw his and Hank's relationship as a general parody of the often homoerotic superhero-sidekick relationship (especially Batman and Robin). The running gag was that although Sunshine wasn't actually sexually interested in Hank, basically everything about his behavior made him appear that way; much like Batman's behavior toward Robin would be extremely creepy outside the context of the comic. The crowd of people who say "I wouldn't want him playing with my kid" in that early scene represent our reaction to these homoerotic overtones in comics.

That's not to say that he didn't have some serious emotional problems, though.

As I comment above, I do not think he is--he is just careless with side-kicks and everyone knows it. They talk around it like any other "character flaw." So when the guy on the street says, "keep him away from my kids," it means he does not want his kid to get killed. Obvious double-entendre. I think Capt. Sunshine's behavior is more psychotic concern with "not losing another one!" and trying to make up for the other three he got killed. The kiss, as others have noted, is a Godfather II reference: "Fredo! You broke my hear!" Makes one wonder if Capt. Sunshine will take revenge? Probably just a reference.

Hank and Dean are "Gee Whillikers!" innocent about sex. They have the idea--Dr. Venture explains it to Dean but then wanders into a Whitesnake love triangle! It seems to me that they have "an idea," but do not quite "get it."

So I do not think the younger Hank really understood Sgt. Hatred's "creepy touching."

1.Superman:super strength, flight, throwing enemys directly in the prison yard(like a lot of siver age heros), getting his powers from the sun.
2.Batman:Giant Penny, Butler, teenage sidekick, homosexual undertones with sidekick(there were acusations of this in the 50's) having his previous sidekick die tragicly, hanks haircut
3.Micheal Jackson:farris wheel and arcade, brining young boys home, not getting the fact that his actions are boredring on pedophlic, pedofila acusations, slumber partys.
There you have it folks as for his powers, they could be any energy based hero anyways, but I'm likin that this season our heros are growing, hanks becoming rebelious and changed his look and deans grown a mustache though he hasn't changed much other wise. I can't wait for next week with clone dean, the stuff from the trailer and more!(more meaning triana, she showed up twice and once got fanboys and shippers hopes up, then she disapeared though she really wasn't needed last season.

Yeah, I think he's supposed to be like Michael Jackson and not a full pedophile. That might explain Publick pointing out on his blog that the episode was written before Michael's death.
But still. I didn't like the whole pedophile thing. Hatred is a hilarious pedophile, but he's enough, and Sunshine is more confusing and creepy. Other than that though, the episode was hilarious, and a good stand-alone episode, even if, after last week's episode, I want something that will continue the plot.

This was a good one. The whole ransom plot didn't get enough play time as far as I'm concerned. Also, they were really milking the Captain Sunshine/ possible pedophilia angle for all it's worth. It really delivered pitch perfect for me though. A definitive Superhero Episode. I'm a bit unsure about the Superfriendsesque narration at the end though. It works with the whole superhero theme, but it also breaks the reality. Well, you know it's a good episode when they use The Pupa Twins (Moppets) and nobody complains.

She looked pissed leaving the taxi--probably pissed at herself. I think it was a play on the old superhero cliche of Villian--"HA!HA!HA!"--trying to destroy the hero but only increasing his powers. The voice was the obvious cheezy narration we remember as Wee Spuds watching that stuff!

I finally got a GOOD disk of the third season--I guess there were some bad ones--and both "Doc" and "Jason" mention their suprise that fans forget that Dr Mrs The MONARCH! and The MONARCH! are EVIL! They are bad people. We like them because they are funny, have a relationship, but they are perfectly happy with killing random innocent people.

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch may just not be as smart as she thought she was in this case and was pissed she screwed up.

Worst Episode EVER!
I laughed a whole lot, (especially when The Monarch kicked Dr. V. In the balls) but I just felt sick and horrified the whole time. I think the homo-pediphilia thing was covered plenty well enough with Hatred, I Really didn't need any more.
I'm really wondering what the deal is with 21's whole, new wolverine deal. Of corse, I was completely lost on how he endid up with the X1 in the last episode too.

I think we all know the Cap'n sunshine thing was a reference to all the Gay Batman and robin references in the past; but I think I may have recognized one with the lube:

http://superdickery.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=32%3Aseduction-index&id=304%3Amore-qbatmans-gayq-innuendo&Itemid=36

Anyway, in all, I did enjoy the episode, but when I get the DVD, it's definately going to be the episode I skip over (except with commentary) I think Once is enough for me.

Watch it a few more times and I think you'll get this episode a lot more. This was an extremely well done episode which will stand up well.

And get over the homo/pedo thing. Hatred is a pederast; Sunshine is a repressed man-child who has probably never had actual sex. They are very different.

Guys, Hank and Dean arent under 18. They got their Legal IDs at the beginning of season 2, while they still thought they were 16. That happened how many years ago? that makes it 20/21 years since theyve been born, and 18/19 years theyve been alive, corrct?

People! This is a comedy! It is not as if anyone is ACTUALLY getting molested or murdered! It is like a satire of "Mr. Rogers" where Mr. Rogers is portrayed as . . . REALLY liking kids. No one is ADVOCATING that. It is satire!

The Monarch murders and entire office of men and women by accident--but gets some sweet paper products! It is a joke.

Seriously. South Park had pushed FAR greater borders.

Sunshine, like Michael Jackson, is not necessarily a pedo, but he certainly comes across as one, and he's definitely and undeniably a total weirdo man-child. I think he helps us get a fuller picture of Hank's growth this season. Dean and Hank could've easily grown up to be the same kind bizarre, disconnected-from-reality man-child crazies, but Hank expresses at the end of this one that you can't spend your whole life in your own little fantasy world.

So, not just a funny episode, but I think we'll look back on it as a key piece of Hank's development throughout the season.

Other notes-

Badass 21 is great. I love that he's reinvented himself as a new, hardcore elite henchman, but he's still our same old 21, preferring to pay off the cabbie rather than kill him. He's shown himself emotionally capable of murder before, but I think he'd still rather avoid it when that's an option.

21 vs. Hank was awesome. That's the sort of action that they couldn't really do when Brock got all the fight scenes. "Sorry Hank, but you're being a little DICK!"

Mini-Hatred got a couple good bits in there, like sending Rusty the map, but yeah, they really could've done more with him. I don't think they showed him going back to normal size, so maybe it's a setup for something in the next episode. As we know, the shrink ray doesn't always work the way it's supposed to, and they were probably surprised when they were able to shrink him in the first place.

I loved getting a glimpse of the spandex hero scene as it is in the Ventureverse. I want to know if Batman is a real person in this world or if Hank's still just kind of stupid about that.

I could go on all night, so I'll stop here.

Does the shrink ray EVER work? Remember Dr. V's attempts to use it in the previous seasons? Even his dad could not get it to work correctly.

It may be that they had more with Mini Hatred but simply had to cut it for time.

Writing of obsession, anyone else notice that Jonas Jr. is a bit obsessed with recreating the father he never knew? Garguantua II which was SUCH a success it was left with two misfits? Just a thought. . . .

Honestly my faviorite charicter of the week was ghost robot. two great things that make absolutly no sense togheter. unless it's a ghost inside a robot. but still I love his line of being emotinally seperated like a ghost or a robot followed by thanks ghost robot. genius. that and I loved both the fact they were one of these sensatonilist news teams(complete with two sports guys no less!), and captian sunshine's crys of wonderboys were awesome! that and dr.ventures proclamation of "holy crap it's chuck scarsdale, we'd better hide or we'll be on the news!" I love this show and keven conroy knocked this one out of the park, though triana's return is still something I want, the flirting with dean theing was probably a"we don't have to use her this season so we'll save it for the next", well now it's the next. but enough brooding about that so someone will join me in the hope, I also loved hank calling dr.venture a honky. that and the silver age throwing him in the prison yard thing.

I was just wondering about the Monarch's sexuality. He seemed forward with Captain Sunshine, shoving his butt in his face telling hin can finally screw his ward and his arch enemy all at once. I just wonder if the reason he stalks people because of sexual frsutration or rejection. I remember the episode when he screwed the robot with Dr. Venture's face. It just begs the question....Is Dr. MRS. Girlfreind really a man.

Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is a woman, she just has a deep voice. The Monarch is completely straight. Watch "Shadowman 9: In the Cradle of Destiny," he falls for her at first SIGHT, before he ever heard her voice.

My opinion is that the Monarch likes to fight dirty when he can, using sex as a weapon if ever possible.

According to commentary, Dr. Mrs. The MONARCH! is a woman, was always a woman. Her voice is the obvious joke of a sexy vixen with this masculine voice. However it is based on "Jewish women who smoke too much" from Doc's neighborhood to my recollection. Think Patty and Selma from The Simpsons.

However, it is clear The Monarch is kinky. They make references to this. I think he is devoted to her--cannot replace her. She, however, is wild--"I hide it in my mouth and jammed it up his . . . honey! You do things when you first date." He is obviously quite explicit--"you have my permission to start before me!"

So he probably flirted with swinging to please her and it just ended up not working. However, based on the commentary to the last episodes of last season, Doc and Jackson have not thought too much about it other than to leave them speculative. It is a harvest for jokes. I forget who said what, but one noted that her reason for hoping to catch Brock is because she is pissed he refused her earlier. He speculated she was really not interested in Brock to which the other chimed in, "Oh, I think she'd do Brock."

So I think it is all open.

Anyways, too much thinking. We are dealing with a guy devoted to butterflies and a gal who has midgets obviously obsessed with her in a bizarre Oedipal fashion.

I think Dr. O needs a body though to reunite with the soul. All 21 had was 24's finger, and a ring worth two low low payments of $29.95.

Doc and Jackson read fan posts and saw many were guessing 24 would be either cloned by Doc Venture or resurrected By Dr. O. so they toyed with us by showing 21 trying to do just that, and not getting anywhere.

I still say 24 is not dead. They claimed HELPeR was dead too, so there! There were multiple henchmen that got decapitated in the battle, so that could be any one of their heads that 21 caught. I think the OSI recovered 24 when they were taking away the bodies and clone slugs and he is now in the SHED division. I thought the invisible guy trying to escape might have been him, but the screaming voice was not the same.

Also, I don't recall seeing any speculation here before about why the explosives on HELPeR went off. We last saw the remote detonator on Dr. Mrs. The Monarch's throne. As Tim-Tom and Kevin were not to be seen on the battle field, it must have been them trying to take out 24.

Dr. V mentions he can recreate a body but he will not have the memories of 21 while Orpheus cannot bring back the body. So . . . Doc and Jackson may be leaving open the possibility that Dr. V will provide a body--clone slug--and Orpheus will find the "soul."

Or not.

I'm guessing that scene is a flashback of when Brock first became the Venture bodyguard. The boys (the current ones at the time) were still infants at this point. The clone slugs must grow at the same rate as the currently active clones, so that's why we saw what looked like baby clones in the tubes. If the boys died when they were 10, then the clone slugs would be 10 years old as well. That's why even if Doc could start new clones of Hank and Dean, they'd be infant clones and not the current age that Hank and Dean are now.

Got some questions, an observation and a speculation regarding Capt. Sunshine's super crew.
1) What was the name of the villian that Barbie Q said had escaped from prison? It sounded like Asbestos, but was pronounced AsbEEstos? Don't know if that's the aussie pronounciation for it.
2) Anyone think the gang may have arrainged for his escape just to get the Captain to stop moping and rejoin them to capture the villian?
3) Speeking of Barbie Q, anyone else notice the shoulder joint on her, as on a Barbie Doll?
4) What was the name of Sam Turgess' superhero persona (the blonde guy in the Uncle Sam outfit with the voice like Macho Man Randy Savage? I couldn't quite make it out. In the credits, I saw the name US Steel in the voice credits, but that didn't sound like what was said in the dialog. I may be mistaken.
5) Was there a name given, if any, for Neville Brown's superhero persona (The guy with the bird mask)?
  • 0
Oct. 30, 2009, 1:49am
I'll try my best here

1)got me, watched it a dozen times trying to figure it out.
2) I assumed it was a legitimate escape, but now that you mention it...
3)yes. yes I did
4) wikipedia has his name as Captain US, but the end credits list his name as US Steel (which is funnier) and earlier I misheard his real name, It's Turgen, not Turgess.
5) Other than Neville Brown, no. And Neville Brown isn't even accredited.

It's damned peculiar that so many guys want to believe that Captain Sunshine isn't a pedophile, when they spent enough time with the butler instructing Hank where to put the lube.

Sgt. Hatred is honest about himself, but that was due to OSI doing a bit of rewiring that doesn't make him a clear and present danger. Sunshine wasn't ambiguous at all about what he wanted, and obviously he was protected enough to evade prosecution. There wasn't anything unclear about that.

The first Wonderboy was Capt. Sunshine's son, who he took into the "business" at a young age, and who ended up getting killed via Cap's own negligence. The succession of replacement Wonderboys is a doomed and tragic attempt to recapture that relationship with a surrogate.

First footage! Title revealed! https://youtu.be/eXJ5OM9RfV8 Synopsis and cast too! “In The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, a nationwide manhunt for Hank Venture leads to untold dangers and unexpected revelations, while the Monarch is literally out for Dr. Venture’s blood. Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
