This was a Jackson episode as well? Goddamn, the past few seasons have usually erred towards Doc written episodes in sheer volume, but Jackson has killed it this year.
I was assuming next week was a Jackson given that it's a Team Venture episode, and Doc has traditionally never wrote those, so it'll be interesting to see where the credit ends up. Jul. 15, 2013, 1:05am

Right, and they've kept to the every-other-episode format so far. Two Jackson-written episodes ("Spanakopita" and "O.S.I. Love You") aired in succession, but that was probably due to Doc's Halloween episode airing before the official season five premiere. A Doc-written finale would even things up at four apiece.
Jul. 15, 2013, 1:39am
They have been, yes, but that was in the context of a 13-season episode (or in the case of season four, a 14-episode season). My guess--and it's only a guess--is that the guys decided to go with only one co-written episode, namely the hour-long premier. If the finale is co-written, Doc will have only three solo-written episodes to Jackson's four. Oh, and Doc's been focusing mostly on the boys and Gary. From the episode synopsis and the sizzle reel clips that have yet to air, it seems that the last episode will continue in that vein.
Jul. 16, 2013, 11:32am
Yep, Jackson confirmed it a while back.

They mentioned that he tried to kill Rusty as a kid. This could go several different ways:
- he believed the Rusty had something to do with the plane crash...most likely an accident
- taking revenge on Jonas Sr. for turning him into a robot
- taking revenge on Jonas Sr. for killing him and then turning him into a robot
I personally think it's a mix of all three. Jul. 15, 2013, 12:52am

Wow...that's entirely plausible...Monarch's parents were killed in a plane crash in New Jersey, likely around the same time Venturion was created. And the photo from S.P.H.I.N.X Rising bears a fairly strong resemblance to the mugshot profile in Bot Seeks Bot. Similar jawlines, similar noses, similar builds and heights...
Interesting - but not at all implausible - that neither Doc nor Monarch seem to remember anything about this...
What an amazing wrinkle that would be...so what if...
What if Monarch learns there's no compelling basis for his enduring hatred of Doc?
What if Venturion is dead by Brock's hand? Does that make Brock the target of Monarch's vengeance, or is that too much of a stretch? Jul. 15, 2013, 12:00pm

We saw them looking in through the panic room window, but they got no lines in that episode.
There was a very Dean-like character in the background at Chairman Wao's this episode, however. But too far away to be certain.
Also, was this the first appearance of Rick Danger since Season 2? Jul. 15, 2013, 12:13pm

So I just re-watched the Season 5 sneak peak, and holy cow were there still a lot of clips from it that haven't shown up yet this season. Are we sure the next episode is just a half hour, because from the looks of it, we still have to cover Hank and Dean with their godparents, flashbacks to the old Team Venture days fighting Brainulo, The Monarch with his weird new costume, as well as The Monarch doing that bit where he is being a dentist for Rusty, as well as any scene with Rusty in bandages. It just seems like it will be jam packed...
Jul. 15, 2013, 12:53am
- by Mike
Nope, it's a half hour. Also those could all be like six second scenes. They just take ones that are the best looking usually, not ones that are the most relevant. Also that thing is probably going to be more heavily weighted towards the first 5 or 6 episodes produced since I think it was made before some of them were done. Like I don't think it has any scenes from the premiere, though I could be wrong.
Jul. 15, 2013, 12:59am
Well, they did say there'd be a flashback episode, so I guess this is it. One or both of the godparents must be from the origanal Team Venture and tell of the Brainulo fight and/or the Marathon Man/Mad Love dentist scene. And then Monarch gets a new costume to celebrate, maybe he's the one telling the dentist story.

I'm calling it: the next episode uses the boys going to stay with the Action Man and Col. Gentleman as a framing story to reveal some secret truths about Rusty's past, meanwhile Dr. Mrs. The Monarch, as a newly-elected Councilman, learns these same truths. Rusty survived the accident but the Monarch is intent on torturing him; we're shown this early on in the episode and the whole 'presumed dead' thing is only from the perspective of the characters. Knowing the truth about Rusty and Malcolm's relationship, DMtM saves Rusty. Rusty sets off home, while Hatred, bent on revenge, travels in the other direction.

I remember reading something about a movie-like episode to take place between seasons 5 and 6. I think I read Doc and Jackson talking about their contract with Cartoon Network and they mentioned a longer episode after 5. If what I read was true, that could be where those extra scenes come from. It would also explain why there are only 8 episodes this season.

Their contract with AS was, essentially for 10 episodes. The Halloween special counted a one and the hour long premiere counted as two. So next week's ep will be the tenth and last of season 5. The special between seasons has been cancelled, according to the recent Slate interview so that they could get right into work on Season 6. I don't know what they're going to do with the money budgeted for that special. They could run a special after season six or they could just add an episode or two to season six. And as Mike says upthread, the outstanding clips add up to only a few seconds of showtime.

Red Mantle (Buddy Holly) Dragoon (Big Bopper) Sombrero Guy (Richie Valens) Mommy Long Legs, Clue Clown, Vendata (Malcolm's dad) Dr Z, Don Hell, Steppenwolf, Wild Fop, Nervous System Guy, and 2 others. I guess Phage and Girlfriend are both up for Clue Clown's spot. I thought for sure Steppenwolf's silhouette was Stormfront last season. Nice to keep guessing! And suppose Ghost Robot is Malcolm's mom, Jonas's sister? Suppose the Intangible Fancy is Vendata's human side....anything's possible. Great to see so many season one guys. Plugface and Vaingloria are made for each other lol
Jul. 15, 2013, 5:02am
That was my interpretation, too. And if it's correct (i.e., if Vendata is actually dead), it makes his story one of the most tragic in the show's history. I genuinely felt bad for the guy when his his humanity took over, or the memories of his past came flooding back, or whatever happened at the end of the episode.

I think that was partly a Robocop reference and partly showing, once again, that Jonas Sr's status as a Good Guy was nebulous at best. My interpretation was that he found a plane crash victim and used him for an experiment.
The Vendata-is-Monarch's-dad theory is fairly interesting but I don't know if people are reading into it too much. Anything is possible with this show. They have been subtly pushing the Monarch family/Venture family dynamic for the entire season, so it'll be interesting to see if that pans out. Jul. 15, 2013, 11:21am

I am also of the opinion that Monarch's mom is Jonas sister. I don't want Rusty and Malcom to be halg-siblings (or full siblings). Doc already has a long lost brother he despises...no need to do that again.
I personally believe Monarch's dad was in the Boys Brigade. We saw a picture in seasons 3 and 4 and they included Professor Impossible, Phantom Limb a guy wearing a V on his shirt (who I had assumed was Hatred due to his love of letters) and this geeky kid in a boy scout uniform. I think Monarch's dad is the guy in the boyscout uniform.
I'd much rather have Monarch as Rusty's cousin than his brother. Jul. 17, 2013, 10:11am

After his years as Rusty's and the boy's bodyguard Brock is kind of invested in them. T Shoreleave they are just some very minor personages who waste the OSI's valuable time and talent. That's all.
I wonder if headshot's complaint about Shoreleave always gaying things up was the guy's way of saying maybe they;'re been overdoing Shoreleave this season. Jul. 15, 2013, 8:10am

I interpreted Shore Leave's actions as a simple--and hilarious--plot device. I think it's in one of the season three commentaries that Doc Hammer jokes about the Jackson Publick school of dealing with a character you don't want to use/don't know what to do with: you "hit him with a wrench." Doc copped to doing just that when he wrote Jefferson Twilight into a Nickle Nips-induced diabetic coma. I think Shore Leave's tazing of Hatred was just a way to get the big guy out of the way.

Random things I loved about this episode:
1. "Are you disappointed?"
"Ambivalent. Merely re-calibrating expectations. . . . There."
2. Headshot's constant attempts to assassinated somebody.
3. Billy's ventriloquist dummy routine.
4. Shore Leave's Brock-themed wordplay. "Fortress of Brock-itude, "Chew-Brock-a, "Brock Cousteau," etc.
5. Steve Albin-o.
6. Flying Squid inks onto Shore Leave.
I could go on. My expectations were pretty much off the charts for this one, but it completely lived up. This season continues to amaze. Jul. 15, 2013, 9:52am

Question: at the Boggle funeral, is the kid in the back the jerk that's always giving shit to Dethklok in Metalocalypse? Ted Turner in front row also?
At Don Hell's: is that Bowie in his Rainbow Man outfit? Or Joseph and his Technicolor Nightmare Robe? Criswell in the bowtie? Phineas has to take his legs off at the club. Laughing throughout.
Just another reality TV show that no one is aware of at the end. How PKD! Jul. 15, 2013, 10:19am

I think he's also dating the green alien guy whose name contains no earthly letters.
I think they seemed amorous after reuniting at the end of Any Which Way But Zeus.
Sometimes I wish we could get backstories on some of these wonderful background characters. I personally had wondered about Galacticon before we learned his name (he looks like a Celestial from Marvel comics).
I'd really like to learn more about the drill headed villain... Jul. 17, 2013, 10:16am

I don't think anyone's really commented yet about the Brock/Amber thing. If it hadn't been hinted at--strongly!--in the episode, you'd have to assume that a lady-killer like Brock would be hooking up with Amber. That sets things up for a possible Brock vs. Headshot confrontation.

I think the insinuation that Amber isn't faithful has less to do with Brock and more to do with the power couple's infidelity in general. Amber immediately volunteered for a Honeypot operation, pretty eagerly, and we saw Headshot about to take advantage of what he assumed was a restrained Molotov in O.S.I. Love You.
I have a feeling they're the OSI's Daphne and Fred. Jul. 15, 2013, 2:10pm

Yeah it seemed obvious Amber and Brock are sleeping together based on Shore Leave's comment and then Brock changing the subject. Shore Leave knows they're sleeping together...this is why is he screwing with Headshot.
Personally I think Shore Leave has a thing for Headshot...it's the way he teases him. Jul. 17, 2013, 10:18am

I have a feeling they are actually enemies of the Guild, and that their purpose in infiltrating O.S.I. was to steal information on the Guild. Although they could have just got it from Monstroso...unless they intentionally allowed Monstroso to think they were on his side so that they could make him give up the information to O.S.I...
But you could be right - they killed Monstroso because he gave away information on the Sovereign, the Clue Clown and the Council, and once the Clue Clown's identity was known he had to be gotten rid of...
I'm starting to warm to the Sovereign not being Bowie thing too...I never really liked the Big Bopper/Buddy Holly thing (especially as Red Mantle and Dragoon look and sound nothing like them). I did wonder at one point whether Vendata was actually Richie Valens - he was the only Councilman to try to come to Red and Dragoon's aid when they were attacked.
Could it be that the 'washed-up rock stars' thing is a cover story? I could totally imagine an evil mastermind having his henchmen take plastic surgery to look like Iggy Pop and Klaus Nomi in order to add credence to his David Bowie disguise. Plus Red and Dragoon got the date of the Winter Dance wrong, although Red's age did match up with Holly's at the time the episode was aired. Jul. 15, 2013, 1:22pm

Yeah, I suspect them to be working with Killenger and the Revenge Society.
On a separate note, is it too out there to suspect that Monstroso is actually the shape-shifter Sovereign or at least one of his personalities? Considering he thought the Councilmen didn't know each other's identities and neither did the Sovereign in this episode, I'm thinking the Bowie form is for public appearances and the Monstroso form is for business purposes. Also, it'd be a good way for Monstroso to survive the fall- just transform into the hawk and fly away inconspiciously. Also, the title of next week's episode, The Devil's Grip, somehow makes me think Monstroso's involved. Jul. 15, 2013, 4:35pm

Everything in the Venturverse is silly - the Guild, OSI, the Ventures themselves - except the Investors. Their ability to walk through walls gives them an almost unbeatable power while their motives and loyalties are completely unknown.
Monstroso knew (knows?) something about them since he traded with them for a heart. What he traded we don't know. But when he was captured he became a threat to the Investor's secrecy so he had to go. I think it's fair to assume that the Investors killed the Clue Clown. But why? Where they protecting Guild secrets from OSI or did they klll him because he was the one member of the Council that they knew about - having heard Monstroso's confession? It makes more sense to me that the Investors are enemies of the Guild then a branch of it. But until we know more about them... who knows. Jul. 16, 2013, 8:56am

I think it was the Revenge Society. Boggles was killed to put Phineas Phage on the council. Phineas Phage being on the council is how they now have surveillance of the chamber sub-rosa (the room with the monitors).
The Revenge Society made it look like a heart attack but O.S.I suspects it was the Guild who killed Boggles. The Guild thinks it was O.S.I. Jul. 17, 2013, 10:22am

Is that his name? Judging by the board O.S.I. had in this episode and the end credits I think I know the name of almost everyone on the council is and their number except the bug guy and the girl
Councilman 1. Vendata (may be replaced by Dr. Girlfriend)
Councilman 2: Wild Fop
Councilman 3: Red Mantle
Councilman 4: Phineas Phage (formerly Boggles the Clue Clown)
Councilman 5: Dr. Z
Counciman 6: Monseñor
Councilman 7: Don Hell
Councilman 8: Dragoon
Councilman 9: Steppenwolf
Councilman 10: the unnamed bug guy
Councilwoman 11: Mommy Longlegs (not sure if that is her name or not)
Councilman 12: The Nerve
Councilman 13: The Sovereign (David Bowie Shapeshifter...possibly Twiggy)
The OSI board seen in this episode has them shown in order of their number from left to right. The first 4 councilmen were row (boggles was taken down due to his death), the next row is councilmen 5-8 and the next row is councilman 9-12. I'm pretty sure I'm right because the show has given us the numbers for 1-4 and 8 and the credits reveal the councilwoman is 11...and they all fit into their place on the board.

I think Omega Ape is his name. As for the last councilman, I'm honestly at a loss as to which behatted villain he is. I'm starting to think that he is the Monsignor now, as opposed to the similarly-shaped guy with the moustache, having noticed the lack of a voice credit for that Councilman. That said, Wild Fop never got a voice credit this episode either.

Dr. Henry Killinger (AND his Magic Murder Bag) look kinda weak in his one scene cameo. Now that we can take that previous storyboard as canon, it doesn't seem like he came to The Revenge Society to lift them above obscurity (like he did with Dr. Venture), but to join them. I'm kinda sad to see Dr. Henry Killinger's peer respect is much lower than below that of Dr. Phineas Phage. I would have expected quite the opposite.

Really? I haven't noticed that many, but I generally pay more attention to the backgrounds and prop designs, which have been great. I did notice in last week's episode a lot of mistakes in the scene where Hank and Dermott talk by the fountain. Hank goes from sitting on the top step to the middle step to the stop step . . . . Oh, and I noticed Billy's eye-patch pop on and off during the dream St. Cloud/Kraken sequence in "Spanakopita." Other than that, I don't remember any.

There have been quite a few this season. Just lots of little boo-boos.
Hatred's gloves popping off between shots, soda's going from half full to full between shots, and so on.
All go back through the episodes once all have aired and compile a list of boo-boos if you'd like.
All Jackson said dream sequences are non-canon so animation errors don't apply, this means Billy's eye patch was not wrong b/c it was dream.
Cool, huh? Jul. 15, 2013, 9:07pm

By all means, go back through and make a complete list. One of my favorite past-times is picking out time-based errors in TV shows and movies (e.g., in a story set in the 60s, a character uses a slang expressions that wasn't used until the 90s). I'm sure I'd get a perverse sense of pleasure at knowing the little animation flaws!
And I like Jackson's non-canon argument. As the show's director, I'm sure it helps save time and preserve his sanity! Jul. 15, 2013, 11:46pm

From time to time this season the characters have been a little iffy when seen from a distance or in full figure; like in the profile of Doc right before the disco ball hits him, or yes, when Killinger walks into the room (just off the top of my head.) Those are pretty minor details, though, and while this season it has been relatively easy to nitpick, I would say that overall the show looks the best it ever has.
There have been individual highs and lows throughout the seasons (like Return to Malice from season 4.1, which had killer expressions and gesture drawings,) but this season's compositions, color and character designs have really made a great impression on me. O.S.I. Love You especially was really visually stunning for TV animation. Jul. 15, 2013, 9:10pm

That's been my impression, too. I've loved the character, vehicle, and background designs this season. I've noticed, too, that vehicle movements have been almost entirely computer generated, making for smoother, more lifelike movement. In last week's episode, for example, Hatred's hover-tank and Jeep moved flawlessly. In past seasons, it seems that vehicle animation was completely random, with some being 3-D (and therefore impressive) and some looking as if it had been animated by a high school art student!

I think it's more fucked up it appears as though the Monarch's dad died (again) while his son was right there, unknown to him or the Monarch!
Then Dr. Venture got crushed to death in front of Malcolm, while his cyborg dad dies (again) 20 feet away... entirely unbeknownst to all. Jul. 15, 2013, 6:29pm

The chambers the council were coming out after the meeting were # but different council members were coming out from different chamber #s. Like Boggles was #4, but Wild Flop came out of chamber 4 and Dr. Phineas Phage came out of chamber 2 when he suppose to be #4 replacement. I need consistency!!

I may be way off on this but does anyone else think Shore Leave's line about Vendata being the Bicentennial Man is about more than just that he went online in 1976? Like, maybe it's a reference to the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man, where he went from being a robot to a human? I might be overthinking this, but still ...

Well, I'm all for the seasons coming quicker. My point is that I'll take a short-form special if it doesn't delay production of the season proper. I don't know that much about animation, but as I understand it, it's the wait on Korea to finish animating the figures, vehicles, etc. that takes so much time. If the guys can do something at Titmouse during the wait, I'll take it. If not, I'll be more than happy with season six.

The Shallow Gravy thing didn't really delay the season that much. They work on multiple episodes at a time all the time, there's no way one 15 minute thing is going to somehow block them on the rest of the season.
Jackson and Doc pretty much killed themselves making season 3 and 4 so when they were done they just took some time off. Season 5 pre-production didn't start until months after the season 4 finale when previously they had started it immediately after the season ended. They were also able to slow down the process a little and write scripts before they needed to start putting together the show.
There were some delays there but I think the main idea with this season was to not destroy their lives as much as previous years. If that helps them produce something of the massive level of quality this season has been through and through then I am okay with that. At the end of the day you have to remember that two guys make the majority of the decisions with this show and are involved with every stage of the process which is pretty much unheard of for an animated show of this scope. So it's going to take longer because they don't have like 10 writers and a separate director and $1m per episode for animation. Jul. 17, 2013, 2:57pm

Where is all the outrage that Dr. Venture has died?!?!? When 24 died we went on for pages and pages about how sad we are that he's gone....Dr. Venture is much more important than 24! He's the glue that keeps it all together while being a complete d!#% of a character at the same time (while trying to be a good father). Mourn his loss! We need Dr. Venture (and more Phantom Limb)!!!

WHAT! Dr. Venture is a visionary capable of all kinds of scientific abominations, cynical behavior, passive parenting, and narcissistic attitude. A low-level super-scientist who has seen everything during his childhood, nothing surprises/impresses this man. He is capable of being the greatest inventor of our time if he saw the need to apply himself (and he'll tell you that too), dabbling in super-science is much more enjoyable. He enjoys his life because he's seen what working to death can do to a super-scientist. Dr. Venture knows that anyone who doesn't live their life the way they want to is an idiot. We all yearn to be Dr. Venture because he's "The Dude" in all of us. We already have a little Dr. Venture in us and seeing him live his life lets us vicariously live through him. Thank you Dr. Venture. I will forever miss you.

Those glitter balls, also called Disco balls, are basically hollow, just a thin shell. Not that you still couldn't get killed by one striking you on the head mind you, but not crushed. Doc will be back. Or as a coworker of mine speculated, this is where we find out Rusty is a clone. As a kid he got dragged along on all sorts of dangerous adventures. Maybe Jonas did with Rusty as Doc did with the boys?

Sorry I'm late to the party this week but I've had things going on. Here's my take on some of what went down. My apologies if I'm repeating anyone.
After talking to a coworker whom I got into VB years ago, I agree with the theory that Vandata is the Monarch's dad.
I also believe that ol' Jonas was probably having an affair with Monarch's mom and was responsible somehow for the plane crash. Dad survived the crash, but barely alive and becomes Vandata.
In Shadowman 9 when the Monarch asks the council who killed Jonas and it sounded like Vandata who answered tersely, "WE'RE asking the questions here, Monarch!" Perhaps it was he who killed Jonas as part of a vendetta? Or at least he thinks he killed him anyway. I still think Jonas is alive too, or a clone of his anyway, and will resurface at some point.
The Monarch doesn't remember the events from the photo he found of he and Rusty playing at the Venture compound with Jonas and his parents in the background. In House of Mummies when Doctor Venture and Orpheus are arguing over whether magic or science is better, Doc mentions a mind control helmet in the lab, no doubt invented by Jonas. Hmmmmmm.
Also, if you look at the pic above you can see Dean seated just to the left of where Vandata is holding the menu. What's he doing there and who's he with?
Could Dr. Mrs. The Monarch be in collusion with The Revenge Society to bring down The Guild? Jul. 17, 2013, 6:06pm

you wanna bet that Monarch's dad was impotent, Jonas did a 'super cure' for his impotency by bumping uglies with Madam Butterfly? no good...? it's Vendata's best interest that he be avenged by GoC Intent causing him the least amount of pain work. GoC Intent killed Jonas Sr. bet on it.

maybe some people have noticed this already, but in the season 5 trailer doc is still wearing the suit from this episode and some bandages on his head when the monarch is drilling his teeth. so i guess that rules out the possibility of him actually being dead. however, if everyone believes he is, that means the government(or possibly the guild) could come and seize the venture compound and put rusty out on his ass. as far as more expose on the guild/osi goes, i think they've shown the bulk of that for this run. i bet we won't see the revenge society again this season either. also it looks like the action man is in this next one quite a bit. i smell death

Rusty was 43 in season one. Assuming that only two years have gone by he's only 45, the same age as the Monarch.
Vendata was constructed in 1976 if I recall last weeks episode correctly. If the monarch was 8 back them, the he and Rusty were born in 1968.
However in the first season, when Rusty was 43, the year was 2003 so Rusty was born in 1960. This is why series fiction tried to avoid being nailed down by dates. It just messes things up when there's no year-to-year continuity. Jul. 20, 2013, 10:15pm

season 2 came out in 2006, but by the sound of it Crime-o-dile had died recently.. also they mention in season 2 that hank and dean are 16 years old (Would be 19 but they were clones).. and season 4 Hank wasn't able to join Sphinx because Brock said he had to be 18.. that's less than a 2 year span between 2 seasons
