....Vendata is Monarch's dad. He was in a plane crash, put together by Venture and had a wife that died.

WOW. THAT IS INSANE. I'm a softie for robots/cyborgs getting hurt in shows...this makes it way sadder.

That was also a Robocop reference. But I can see that happening. Monarch's dad was a pal of Jonas Sr., so it's not hard to believe Jonas would put him back together after the crash and something would go wrong.

But does that mean the Monarch's mom is a cyborg too?

Whaddya do when a loved one dies... cry!?!?!

NO!!!! You rebuild him, that's the Venture way!

Interesting theory. I believe the timelines they gave for when Vendata was built would potentially coincide. The Monarch said the plane crash was when he was 8 and if he's around 45 now that would put the crash in 1976 or so.

Wow, Monarch looks good for 45. But I guess you gotta stay in shape to arch, right?
  • 1
Jul. 15, 2013, 12:49am
Yeah, his abs are killer. He should market his routine. He'd probably make enough to get out of the arching business altogether.

He arches for the hate, not for the money. He's got that sweet trust fund money to fund his operations.

Still, he should let us in on his secret. Unless it's lots of plastic surgery, which is possible.

Jul. 15, 2013, 1:16am
Good points, all. I just think he should take advantage of those assets and get a piece of the sweet personal-training money cake.

That would be pretty neat. He could do an infomercial in his down-time, maybe even persuade Gary to make a testimonial.

Since his routine involves [CENSORED--Ed.] Dr. Mrs. The MONARCH [!--Ed.] in various experimental ways . . . sign me up!

But leave out the moppets.

And the eels.

Yeah, that was my thinking. A small addition, but wondering where his wife was suggests that she was in the crash as well.

And of course, the reason he got fired, but that's probably too obvious to mention.

Jul. 15, 2013, 1:29am
Yeah, rewatch "Dia de los Dangerous", the Monarch says that all three of them were in the crash (he and his parents) but he was the only survivor.

Jul. 15, 2013, 11:13am
They mentioned that he tried to kill Rusty as a kid. This could go several different ways:

- he believed the Rusty had something to do with the plane crash...most likely an accident

- taking revenge on Jonas Sr. for turning him into a robot

- taking revenge on Jonas Sr. for killing him and then turning him into a robot

I personally think it's a mix of all three.

And then Jonas Sr. erased his memory after he failed, possibly in the learning bed, and planted a false one. But it still haunts the Monarch in a way he can't quite shake.

Wow, he really is very Green Goblin-esque.

I think you've nailed it. And how tragic was it when his robot body was shattered and his humanity began to reassert itself? I wonder how much we'll find out about this next week.

Well, the humanity was never really repressed, it was just working alongside the cybernetics. That makes for a lack of relatability, I'd imagine.

There's more to humanity than a personality and a past, as the movie Robocop showed us. There's an intangible quality that can't be removed, no matter how cyborged you are. Unless you go 100% robot, of course, but then you're not a cyborg anymore.

Wow...that's entirely plausible...Monarch's parents were killed in a plane crash in New Jersey, likely around the same time Venturion was created. And the photo from S.P.H.I.N.X Rising bears a fairly strong resemblance to the mugshot profile in Bot Seeks Bot. Similar jawlines, similar noses, similar builds and heights...

Interesting - but not at all implausible - that neither Doc nor Monarch seem to remember anything about this...

What an amazing wrinkle that would be...so what if...

What if Monarch learns there's no compelling basis for his enduring hatred of Doc?

What if Venturion is dead by Brock's hand? Does that make Brock the target of Monarch's vengeance, or is that too much of a stretch?

That was my thought. I was hoping The Monarch would find out who VennData was and seek vengeance on Brock, thus becoming the villain he's supposed to be. Brock thinks The Monarch is a joke, so he'd never see him coming.

Good call Ghobbi! I thought it was just a Robocop reference.

This series is a MUST for DVD--not that, well, the others were not. I am going to have to watch it a few times to figure it all out!
