New Museum, Now You Don't -- Discussion

Hey, here we are, another week, another new episode. The latest episode, Now Museum, Now You Don't! should be up on Adult Swim.com Video for your viewing pleasure. Talk about it in the comments here, but beware of evil spoilers if you haven't watched it yet. Also note I'll be away this weekend (though I will have a computer), but I'll return Sunday night-ish. Have a good time, kids!

Edit (July 27th, 3:06am): Voting is now open on the capsule page, and uh, that's it for now I guess.

Shirt - Original Team Venture?

Stuff from the beginning:
Fraternity of Torment - Manataur
Jonas's very poor disguise - from Japaninawa
Cano breathing fire
"Action! Action! Action!"

Potentially bigger things:
Col. Gentleman to Rusty - "That's for breaking my step-daughters heart." - Dr. Quymn
JJ less than perfect - very Jonas-like in this episode

Also, I thought this line was great:
"This is gonna be one of those things, isn't it."

In response:
Shirt: Pirate captain jolly rodger

Stuff from the begining:
Rusty screaming bloody murder.

Potentially bigger things:
"This is going to be one of those things isn't it? I mean --- You get a bunch of short fused costumed idiots together in one room like this -- and what do you think's going to happen? Any minute now stuff's gonna start blowin' up, guys'll be throwing each other into other guys! Huh. You know when you're not the one in the middle of it for once. Actually, totally completely obvious."
That guy with the purple suit from Tag Sale You're It. WHO IS THAT GUY?!

Also thought the line that wasn't a line at all, but a facial expression was great:
If you look at Dr. Venture's face when Jonas Jr is chewing him out about his suit, the look on his face says, "I am SOOO ruining your party. Ha ha ha. Everything is going as planned. And this suit? Oh, it's Italian."

(Noise to Signal, by the way, has been COMPLETELY REVAMPED, so it's worth a peek if you haven't been there in a while. Also, thanks to the good traffic the Venture reviews have been generating, The Venture Bros. is getting its own official archive page. So thanks for reading. Hoorah!)

I like how the original Team Venture keeps growing. Pete White had the best line in the episode about the mom from Growing Pains. I was a little disappointed they reused the pirates that Brock killed with his ass, but this was a great episode for mocking the old cartoons like Johnny Quest and Scooby-Doo.

The piranha thing--it seemed like Rusty was in there for a while to not come out, you, know bleeding somewhere. And I thought--and I know this is stupid, but what if Doc is a clone himself? Brisby said something like, "your dad was dabbling in clonery."
Or am I just reading to much into a scene? I sort of lost it when the Action Man started yelling "Action action action action."

No, I think you're right. Rusty is a clone. It would certainly explain a great many things.

I bet he was killed (or otherwise) towards the end of his preteen adventuring years or later (late teens perhaps) and that's what prompted Jonas to invent cloning (or alternately, stop dabbling in it and actually perfect it.)

If Rusty were a clone though, J.J. wouldn't have been carried along for the ride with him. Remember that J.J. got absorbed in the womb and was in Rusty's body all this time. If he were cloned, Jonas would've had to consciously clone him too, and somehow resimulate being swallowed by Rusty.

It's not that rusty was under there a long time (you can see he is still alive when Otto pulls him out of the pool and HELPeR flies him off, presumably back to the compound and out of harms way -- also out of the way of the fun part of the adventure)... it's that they bleeped the date!!

Honestly, this episode was a return to form after last week's episode. When the crew encounters new characters, the show seems much more lively. It was great to see Mr. Bisby in the background, and his "mute" manservant in the crowd. Bud Armstrong made an appearance, and so did his mother. I wonder how "Team Venture" got the original Jonas killed....

Ok, here we go.
This was a very good episode. I wasn't blown away but I really enjoyed it. Nice to see Otto back. The original Team Venture seems to be getting bigger and bigger (no offense to Entmann, although that was a nice Amazing Colossal Man ref.). Lots of great movie refs. in fact, mostly in the James Bond department.
As I said, the "Tag Sale"/"Fallen Arches" of the season. Also, the most naked episode of the series-male and female! Glad yo see Horace wasn't really dead. Sad to see how bad Dr. Impossible is but nice to have him back. Before I forget, I think they misspelled Toby Huss's name in the credits.

Wow...talk about a busy episode. Total overload from all the characters, new and old. I spent most of the ep just looking at all the various people populating the background and foreground

Loved how that villian kept pointing out the obvious signs of Jonas' "Asian villian" disguise.

Very interesting how JJ isn't quite the perfectly-mannered gentleman/super-scientist that he's been portrayed as thus far. More like Jonas Sr. as cuavsfan pointed out.

I think honestly what I liked most about this episode was the pathetic and sad way Richard kept following Sally around, like a puppy. Obviously they were in love at some point.

JJ being a total dick.

Kiki is drawn differently--he had more Dean-ish hair in Past Tense, and now he has a definite afro going.

Reused audio track from Dick Cavett was a really nice touch. Also really really sweet to actually see good factual interaction between Jonas and Rusty. Awww.

Why were Master Billy and Pete White there? All of the other attendees seemed to be people JJ had hired or people the original Team Venture were associated with. What was their deal? JJ doesn't know them; how did they get involved with this get together?

Just quit smoking and computer is an idiot. Uh. Also, I was under the impression there was going to be less Dr. Impossible, or was Jackson just trying to downplay the "aw, that sucks" of Colbert being a douchebag? (Actually, I don't think he was being a douchebag, I think he was staying in character)
Lastly--uh, I only watched the episode once so far--but, well, Jonas Jr. seemed a little--like he thought he was the star of the Rusty TV series, you know, posing with Team Venture? I thought it was weird. Does Jonas Jr. actually have worse daddy issues than Rusty?

There were so many characters from past episodes in this one. They even had the guy who was looking for pictures of "Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar" in Tag Sale, You're It!

One thing I noticed was that when Richard Impossible was staring at the photo of the Junior Venture Squad that our own Mr. Hamilton J Fantomas was the lad in the wheelchair. It seems everyone has a history with the (possibly) late (not so) great Dr. Jonas Venture Sr. There were two other people that I couldn't recognize. One was a muscular man in a V-logo sweater and the other was a skinny guy in a boy scout uniform with a fro.

Is anyone else wondering what the Society of Torment's relationship is with the Guild, if any? They mention that the Guild was in the Rusty Venture Show, and they had Rusty's Law, yet we see no sign of them in the episode. Maybe the Guild just wasn't as powerful then?

The "Fraternity of Torment" was listed in the The Guild of Calamitous Intent's welcoming video to Dr. Orpheus (and team) in Fallen Arches. It seems to be a rival organization to "The Guild".

*That's* what was bugging me about Dr. Horrible's get-up; he had clumsy gloves. Form-fitting elbow-length gloves always seem to be best for the serious super-scientist, and even if a gauntlet look is preferred, it should be more tailored, less electrical-worker-above-his-station...

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog is an internet musical about an aspiring supervillain trying to get a break into the Evil League of Evil, at the same time courting the girl of his dreams, who happens to begin dating his heroic (and jerky) nemesis.

Joss Whedon. That's all you need to know.

alright, The Monarch says "Professor Flowers?...(sigh) Douche" when he's looking at the GCI Facebook. he's paging through it back and forth, from Dr. Dugong, then Dr. Quymn, and then (here it becomes weirdish), the page facing Quymn s the back of the Professor Flowers page, but when he turns it to show the front, it says Dr. Quentin Ball, which is the bald science guy in the white labcoat we've seen in the background forever.

my question: is this "Professor Flowers" mentioned, another name for Dr. Q-Ball? or are they 2 different characters, and we have not actually seen this Professor Flowers (or, PF is NOT QB) - The Monarch was skipping pages as he went through the book?

and, let me just add, bib front labcoats ftw!

I just realized that JJ was being nice, or trying to be. If Rusty had stuck around he would have taken center-stage in front of all of these people, and JJ would have done a fade. It was all supposed to be a nice surprise. That is why JJ was upset that Rusty didn't wear a tux, but Brock and the boy's plain black suits, he didn't notice them at all.

The whole thing was supposed to make Rusty feel good at the end.

Also, did anyone see the expression on Sally Impossible's face after Richard took his dive and everything started to fall apart? Was she amused?

What you say is true.

However, managing a formal party is a pretty stressful kind of thing to do, what with the secret service there and foreign dignitaries and VIP's etc. Not that JJ isn't used to dealing with this kind of thing, but all at once? I thought a lot of it was stress coming from his trying to stay in control of every detail.

We'll see what happens with this.

I must admit I feel like Billy here. I remember Dick Cavett was at the Key Party. And thinking of it, Jonas was likely the "Milton Berle" of Super Science ... the dude angry Hollywood wives went to because their husbands were philandering donkeys. Jonas's villains were clearly mere jerks.

Colonel Gentleman was a highlight this episode.

I thought the same thing. I would have to imagine he's not long for this world.

I'm still quite curious about the circumstances of Jonas Sr.'s death. So far, we have casual mention of Guild involvement, and that Team Venture (sans Dr. Entmann, who was already stuck in the bomb shelter) got him killed (probably through some negligence or misadvanture. Presumably, Operation "Rusty's Blanket" began shortly thereafter, since Team Venture couldn't be trusted to watch over Rusty.

Oh, and one for the notes:

Scarantula. Cara is face in Italian. sCARAntula. Get it. It's as clever as the explanation for where the 8 legs come from.

Basically, it's all due to the Bond villain he is a reference to, Francisco Scaramanga of "The Man With The Golden Gun", played by Christopher Lee. He is Italian, hairy and has a third nipple instead of an extra digit. Oh, and Herve Villachaise as his henchman, that's funny.
The extra finger may be a reference to Count Rugen of The Princess Bride though.

yeah, i got the bond stuff. and i'm familiar that TMWTGG had the supernumerary nipple, which JS is clearly sporting on his chin (and, after a 3rd watching, i realize that JSs fingers are at his eyes because he is trying to portray japanese eyelids in his extra-fake disguise).

(and, yeah, Tattoo playing Knick-knack in the Bond was awesome)

and Count Rugen merely had one extra finger, and it was an important detail of his character. if there was some kid stalking him, with talk of "the man with 8 fingers on his right hand (and a spider tattoo on his face), who killed my father. prepare to die", i'd be more likely to believe that reference.

so, i'm not satisfied with your explanation, H. i think the extra fingers are something else, and something else specific - not just "well, he's a mutant supervillain, of course he's got weird extra fingers."

DH and JP are usually more deliberate in their subtlety than just random extra fingers, or a spare nipple weirdness translated to extra fingers (when there is a perfectly good Scaramanga spare nipple gag going on already).

mmmm.....
nipple gag.
lot worse things to be gagged with.
"get me my nipple gag and pussy whip! i need to exercise some Discipline!"

I think Saramantula is derived from Scaramouche, a character from a story set during the french revloution, he was a drunken actor and swords master, who wore a mask due to his disfigured nose/face.

Remember the line from Bohemian Rhapsody 'Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fan-dan-go...'

I feel the same way. It had almost everything I could want in a Venture bros. Episode, but It still felt lack-luster. Like it was just missing that certain "Jene se quas" that is usually found pouring from Venture.

Brainulo said he wanted revenge on Dr Venture for stranding him "here in the year 19_9."

Rusty's 43 (as am i), which make him born in 1965. since it cannot be 1959 (because Rusty is already there), and it's unlikely that it's 1979 (because Rusty looks close to 4 than 14), i believe these past events take place in 1969.

however, this IS the Venture Bros, and all sorts of weird SuperScience goes on, so it's just as likely that Rusty is any age and these events could have happened during one of the seemingly common temporal fugues that go on frequently.

Comic time is odd. More likely it is 1967-9 and Branulo has been stuck in the past for 10 years. The Original Team Venture is talking about JFK and the Rat Pack for goodness sake.

For Rusty and Action Johnny to be who they are means they were born between 1955 - 1958. We shouldn't pick nits.

when Sally confronts JJ about Richard being at the party (and Richard's ear is in the scene), JJ tells her "You're obviously upset, and I want to be there for you, Funnyface." i feel like this is exactly what Richard said to her another time. but looking through my Venture Archives, i couldn't find it in Ice Station Impossible or Twenty Years to Midnight.

No duh straight guys fantasize about girls having sex. Girls do it too. Look at all of that Kirk/Spock, Harry Potter/Snape, stuff. All of it's got boys getting down, all of its written by women.

You don't have to take my word for this.

On the other hand Pete White has said that he "doesn't take too many trips down south" so while he may like women, I'll bet that not too many of them like him twice.

Okay, first of all I loved this episode, it's so great to have Col. Gentleman back :D
But there is one thing about this episode that just irritates me so much and that is Humongoloids face!!

How can that be Dr. Entman?? They don't even have the same facial features. I know he could've gotten fatter when he got older but look at his eyes and his nose. What the hell??

When he was Humongoloid, Entman was suffering from Pituitary gigantism, which (according to Wikipedia (yes I know not the best source)) causes
"Soft tissue swelling visibly resulting in enlargement of the hands, feet, nose, lips and ears, and a general thickening of the skin
Soft tissue swelling of internal organs, notably the heart with attendant weaking of its muscularity, and the kidneys, also the vocal cords resulting in a characteristic thick, deep voice and slowing of speech
Generalized expansion of the skull at the fontanelle
Pronounced brow protrusion, often with ocular distension
Pronounced lower jaw protrusion with attendant macroglossia and teeth gapping"

thus the difference in facal features, how Jonas managed to cure him of those symptoms by simply shrinking him, I don't know

Interesting. Did anyone catch what he was saying to Jonas before Jonas told him to rest? And why were they doing CPR on him later on?

I think it was something about having no feeling in his mouth...not unlikely he was having a heart attack.

I don't think Jonas cured him by simply shrinking him. If he had, Entmann would still have all the same problems he had as Humongoloid. (Gigantism is dangerous not because your body is huge, but because your organs are still very small. It's the ratio that's the problem; shrinking Entmann outright would preserve the ratio, and you'd just end up with a tiny little man still suffering from the now-ironic gigantism.)

The shrinkage may have been part of the treatment...but not the whole thing.

I think it was something about that his tongue was too big for his mouth.

He also said his heart hurt. I think this is an Amazing Colossal Man reference because the main character in that movie also had heart pains after his science gone wrong growth.

Gigantism puts an amazing strain on the Heart, most people who end up with it die young and of heart failure which I believe is what the reference is.

But then again Amazing Colossal Man is a good reference too.

I'm surprised that no one picked up on the picture of the original team venture as a reference to Alan Moore's Watchmen, but then again I could be mistaken.

speaking of the old school team venture, I'm sure you all saw it but i wanted to point out how they used the old inventions like the hover boots, drilltank and my fav Action man on the hover scooter.

After watching the cold open for the zillionth time, I just realized that Dr. Venture himself doesn't actually do any fighting. He just kind of stands around.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
