The piranha thing--it seemed like Rusty was in there for a while to not come out, you, know bleeding somewhere. And I thought--and I know this is stupid, but what if Doc is a clone himself? Brisby said something like, "your dad was dabbling in clonery."
Or am I just reading to much into a scene? I sort of lost it when the Action Man started yelling "Action action action action."

No, I think you're right. Rusty is a clone. It would certainly explain a great many things.
I bet he was killed (or otherwise) towards the end of his preteen adventuring years or later (late teens perhaps) and that's what prompted Jonas to invent cloning (or alternately, stop dabbling in it and actually perfect it.)

If Rusty were a clone though, J.J. wouldn't have been carried along for the ride with him. Remember that J.J. got absorbed in the womb and was in Rusty's body all this time. If he were cloned, Jonas would've had to consciously clone him too, and somehow resimulate being swallowed by Rusty.

It's not that rusty was under there a long time (you can see he is still alive when Otto pulls him out of the pool and HELPeR flies him off, presumably back to the compound and out of harms way -- also out of the way of the fun part of the adventure)... it's that they bleeped the date!!
