This was another fantastic example of that special blend that makes me love TVB: tons of character and plot development that still somehow makes room for a lot of random and consistently funny dialogue. I mean, that's some truly tight writing. Also, like the best Venture Brothers episodes, it starts out slowly, introducing plot threads, then builds to a nutty crescendo that manages to tie them all up at just the right pace to be hectic but not OVERLY hectic.

OH my god, the show is finally back! After a slow start and a couple good episodes, they hit it out of the ballpark. This episode is so meta, with the Tim-Tom and Kevin discussion, the can't kill Hank thing and more 'when did we get this moments. No Doc or Brock, but Dean was very Dr. Venture-y anyway. Glad to see everything back on track.

I'm still not a big fan of Tim-Tom and Kevin, but this was probably my favorite episode of the season thus far.
Shirt: Dugon? Hank? Dr. Mrs. The Monarch? Guard-O?
Funny stuff:
Moppets costumes - The Pupa Twins
G. Viceroy = 21
"And that he gave it... the stupidest name ever."
Monarch + 21 + 24 = Awesome!!!
The classic round bomb
The slide
"super runaway"
21 telling Hank he's immortal and then shooting him... with a tranquilizer
Dean being so easily swayed by Dr. Monarch
21 doesn't know anything about the equipment
Bigger plot stuff:
Monarch / Rusty origin - "Why can't we get a straight answer"
Dermott is almost certainly Brock's son

The Moppets (er, Pupae Twins) keep getting creepier with regards to their sexual obsession with Dr. Mrs. The Monarch.
Was she nervous about commanding the Cocoon on her own? Seemed like she needed some inner build up before she could sit down and command everything.
It sounds stupid, but I'm actually a little sad that Dr. Dugong is dead. Maybe because he seems to have had more lines than other characters who really die? Or maybe because there will be no one to look after his cuttlefish. Jul. 19, 2008, 4:49am

He may not be dead. Have you seen his body?
The Monarch doesn't actually have much if any lethal weaponry; tranquilizer dart guns? I mean come on.
So he uses this thing that looks just like a DRAGON anti-tank missile. That bulbous thingie on the business end of it is (I happen to know, having handled an actual DRAGON) is styrofoam. What if it is actually a nerf missile, hmmmm?

Classic Sound Effect: When The Monarch blew away that pathetic Dr. Dugong, did anybody else not think "Autobot gun sound effect!" ?
Dermott continues to make me shake my head sadly. He's like a composite of a few guys I went to school with.
That lighter-up-his-ass boobytrap was priceless.
Interesting how he might occasionally throw a low-level taunt at Dean, but he doesn't lay it on as thick as he first did. Looks like that ass-beating drove some respect into him.
About him being Brock's son...there's gotta be a further curve-ball that's going to be thrown at us.
The Moppets...I wonder if they're going to pull a coup d'tat on The Monarch and possibly Dr. Girlfriend as well, especially after that little planning session they had while watching Nell.
JJ versus The Monarch? YES! The Guild approved this? I wonder if JJ signed up for an arch-enemy or if his status as a super-scientist guarantees him one...whether he wants it or not.
Well, now The Monarch gets to see what it's like to take on a REAL super-scientist...it's a good thing he has Dr. Girlfriend and The Moppets, else he'd be totally screwed.
This season is really shaping up...although I'm still waiting for this season's Victor Echo November. Jul. 19, 2008, 4:51am

Good point...on the one hand, Rusty never understood The Monarch's hatred of him, he's also been super-annoyed by the whole thing from the start anyway. (filing complaints with the Guild)
But like you said, jealousy of JJ might cause him....to apply with the Guild to have The Monarch reassigned?
Or maybe something with Sergeant Hatred...a stage-managed fight designed for publicity, like that Walking Eye. Hmmmm Jul. 19, 2008, 5:48pm

Well, Killinger was going to arch Venture with his brother before, so it wasn't like it came out of left field or anything. Truth be told, I'm surprised it took this long for it to happen.

I don't know. That speech was definitely SW-esque, but I wouldn't call that a reference, per se. More like a deliberate usage of reverse psychology disguised as the hero/villain seduction speech. Just because Vader did one of the better ones doesn't make it a Star Wars reference.

I don't know. After that conversation with #24, I almost wonder if they really are planning to throw us a curveball re: Dermott's parentage.
"Who the hell are you?"
"I'm Hank's friend."
"Yeah, I doubt that."
"Would you believe I'm... Brock Samson's long lost son?"
"If that were true, I don't think I would have caught you this easily."
"I couldn't run because--I had a lighter up my ass."
"Ok, NOW I believe you're Hank's friend"....
Priceless... Jul. 19, 2008, 11:19am

Rewatching this, there's two things I wonder if they'll come back to:
1) Obviously, it was played as a big step for Dr. Mrs. The Monarch to step up and take full control of the cocoon, even if only for a little bit. Kind of wonder if she's going to eventually strike out on her own again at some point.
2) Is there something to come with Hank's new-found delusion that he's immortal? Jul. 19, 2008, 11:47am

So many great things about this episode! I can't even count them.
The idea that the Monarch hates Venture *SO* much that he rapes a robot with his face, just to give it an STD... amazing.
21: Hank! Stop! I'm going to throw up!
Those guys are just too cute together.
Also, I was hoping the Monarch/JJ thing would happen. NOW we get to see some *real* action. Also, Doc's going to be so pissed/jealous.
You know... ever since the Monarch's passionate telling-off of Venture in Home Is Where The Hate Is, I've been struck by how much the rivalry may as well be love. That theme has developed, since we know Doc misses the Monarch, etc. They really *need* each other, and I feel like the JJ thing will really drive the point home, depending on how it develops.
But I'm also looking forward to more Sgt. Hatred, so I'm pleased to just sit back and watch it unfold.
BTW - Tim-Tom and Kevin need to die. Soon. I hate them. Jul. 19, 2008, 1:22pm

Well the Monarch does allude to Romulus and Remus when talking about Dr. Venture. They were the brothers that founded Rome and then Romulus killed Remus over a dispute about who should rule.
Still, I don't think they're brothers. Even though they have a similar hair color and The Monarch hasn't revealed his real last name... Jul. 22, 2008, 6:05pm

I first thought of this during the wedding in Showdown at Cremation Creek. When they stood next to each other, they looked so much alike I thought they could be brothers. I quickly dismissed it as a wild thought. However this episode makes me revisit those thoughts. Also, now we know what kind of man Venture's father was....it seems possible.

that is the point at which I formulated the theory. they were careful to put them side by side almost to show you how much they look alike. they did the same thing with Dr. Quymn.
didn't the Monarch in one of his rants about Rusty say something to the effect of Rusty living off his fathers name it almost sounded like envy.
also he has a huge trust fund.
lastly Jonas was planting his seed all over the place with his little key parties. Jul. 23, 2008, 1:52am

"IDEA FOR MONARCHS TRUE REASON FOR HATING VENTURE:
the rusty venture logo looks like a poor artists representation of rusty. rusty was being shipped all over the world as a child. so! who was he in the show?
going back to the first episode, we see the boy monarch! sans eye brows, he looks EXACTLY like the rusty venture character. he also clearly has a lot of money from somewhere, which is improbably from a "large inheritance." being a child star could be embarrassing to him, which would explain the secrecy.
should it actually be a cartoon within a cartoon, even, the monarch could have provided voice or even be the basis of the character design."
What if this poster's hit it on the nose?
*Somebody* had to play Rusty on the TV show, while the real Rusty was on adventures with his dad.
Wouldn't they look alike?
Wouldn't there be a fortune involved, if the parents followed the child actors laws and invested Malcolm's income wisely?
Wouldn't be a trust fund, until Malcolm turned 21?
The only drawback to this theory is that Rusty would know who played him in the series -- unless Malcolm tamed those eyebrows when he was working, and let them grow out once the series was over.... Jul. 28, 2008, 10:28am

I think we are all suppose to all hate Tim-tom and Kevin just as much as 21 and 24 hate them. Seeing how much everyone hates them, I think if they die; it will be totally awesome. I'm hoping 21 and 24 kill them -perhaps by accident. Also, I think I have a keyboard that makes HELPERS drum sounds, i gotta look for that thing. Best episode out of season 3 so far!

I think it was just as he laid down that reverse psych jujitsu crap on Dean that yes, finally, I fell in love with him.
What sort of man could defile an innocent robot, expressing the worst psychosexual intentions, and yet make me swoon over his traumatizing a minor with his bony, barely-dressed flesh?
I finally see what Dr. Mrs. The Monarch sees in him: Indefatigable will, routed straight through his manhood, as the scattershot bukkake of revenge.
In that scene, and the next one where he defiantly flashes his entire team like a Red Hot Chili Pepper, is when he gained in my eyes balls the size of grapefruits. Who could defy such a fucked-up, fucking beautiful man? Who would want him to not succeed? Jul. 23, 2008, 8:44am

It's awesome that you love the Monarch, but a little weird that it took you this long to fully enjoy such an obviously awesome character. The Monarch has been one of the funniest and best characters in all of animation since the beginning! It's also kinda funny that you now see "what Dr. Mrs. The Monarch sees in him" since ya know, they're fictional cartoon characters who's main reason for being is that they are really funny villains.

I mean, did you read your post above? Comedy gold. Anyway, try to relax. Seriously. We're all here to have a good time. Spirited debate is fun. Telling someone to go torture themselves? Yeah, and don't take that remark about the testicle wrong, either. I have seen it happen: this guy will be sort of a jerk, too belligerant and aggressive though maybe otherwise OK and calmed down considerably after the doctors removed one of his testicles thinking (mistakenly) that it was cancerous.

True, but our main reason for LIKING these characters is that they do seem to operate on some sort of common logic--there's a definite humanity at the heart of the characters, which is what attracts a lot of fans to the Venture Bros. who are NOT attracted to shows like Aqua Teen, Sealab, or stuff like that.
In those shows, the reason things happen are "because it's funny," and never anything else. The Venture Bros. is different in the way that it actually treats its characters respectfully, and each time we learn more about them it makes them more real.
It's good writing. cgeye isn't out of line for enjoying it. Jul. 24, 2008, 3:12pm

I agree with you, Phil. Although I do believe that you and some other posters here read a little too much into the show, it is true that the venture bros is a well-written show and that the characters seem deeper and more "real" than their counterparts on other shows (animated or not). That said, I'm not so sure about treating characters respectfully, as VB clearly loves to create comedic situations out of the pathetic nature, pain and failure of it's cast. Also, at the end of the day - regardless of good story telling and character development - everything on the show DOES happen because it's funny. Jackson and Doc have both said it before, it all comes back to comedy. That, friends, is my only point.
Also I don't know why you guys feel the need to continually bash Aqua Teen and the other Williams street shows. I am with you in the opinion that VB is the best show on Adult Swim by leaps and bounds but that doesn't mean that these other shows are bad or un-funny. Williams Street puts out a lot of clever, well-written shows. We should be glad that there is such a wealth of adult-oriented cartoons available to us at all.
And yes, y'all should really smoke a bowl and enjoy some animated comedy! ;) Jul. 24, 2008, 10:16pm

Well, putting characters through hell doesn't mean they're treating them disrespectfully. Showing a character respect just means treating them appropriately for the situation...which, yes, oftentimes in the Venture Universe involves humilation, agony, and death. I just think you and I are operating with a different view as to what the word means.
Also, I never said ATHF wasn't funny. In fact, I specifically said that the only reason they do anything in that show is BECAUSE it's funny. Williams Street has great stuff, but there's an obvious difference in characterization between this show and some others.
The achievement of Venture Bros. is that we get both great characterization AND excellent comedy. One or the other is satisfying, but both is not always easy to pull off. Jul. 25, 2008, 12:43am

Well put. I totally agree! Kind of like the whole Family Guy vs. South Park thing. I do agree that the mix of all-out comedy and great characterizations is the allure of VB.
My only problem is people taking the show just a wee bit too seriously because the main objective of the show is to be hilarious and it seems that sometimes when folks lose sight of this fact it can get in the way of enjoying the episodes. That said I do quite enjoy your in-depth reviews (even though I may not always agree with them) and your musings on the symbolism and such - which is definitely on point. Jul. 25, 2008, 1:20am

Yeah, Family Guy vs. South Park is a good example. In South Park the characters are usually treated "respectfully" in the way that there's always some logical reason that things happen to them. Sometimes good things, sometimes very, very, very bad things. But it's always because the show (or episode) is making a greater point about something.
Whereas Family Guy does it solely for a laugh. It's not interested in characterization or making large points...it's interested in getting laughs.
Neither one is the "right" way to do it, and there's no real "wrong" way either. It just comes down to what you, personally, prefer.
Funny how all the time we were disagreeing we were actually just using different words for the same thing. :-) Jul. 25, 2008, 4:49am

One interesting thing, if you decide not to read the review: in Home Insecurity, the reason GUARDO became dangerous to the family was that Dr. Venture stopped working on him halfway through, and so hadn't programmed his Friendly File.

One interesting thing, if you decide not to read the review: in Home Insecurity, the reason GUARDO became dangerous to the family was that Dr. Venture stopped working on him halfway through, and so hadn't programmed his Friendly File.

As I watch the episode, bet quote so far (and one that made me laugh out loud):
The Monarch: "I just wanted to kick his ass! I WANTED TO BUILD A MACHINE TO KICK HIS ASS!!"
Great, great stuff. I too have hated on that level.
Perhaps I shouldn't say that out loud . . .
On a related note, anyone ever though that if you creatively deconstruct the word "monarch" it could imply "one arch", i.e., "he who has only one true arch enemy.'"

I think the lasers were just part of the compound security. What Dean did was turn off ALL audio functions on any piece of Venture equipment, which is why they couldn't call Brock or Doc on the watches, and why the cassette player stopped working (note the prominent Venture logo on it... kind of funny that something like that was part of the central system, though.)

The semi-homosexual obsession The Monarch has with Venture has finally culminated into an outright sexual fantasy. If you remember from season one, he does get fairly aroused when watching Rusty and Dr. Girlfriend, not to mention the fact that he's always like, "Well hello, Dr. Venture" in a very creepy tone. These two instances, with the "straight answer" quip from the Moppets, although in a different context, could be interpreted as a rejection somewhere in the past as the reason for The Monarch's hatred of Rusty. I'm not implying the Monarch is gay, but perhaps bi? He did try to watch Dr. Mrs. with another man, quoted as "humiliating", not to mention he had sex with something that had Doc on it.
I don't know. Could just be hate, but maybe something more. Just throwing this idea out there. Jul. 21, 2008, 10:38am

I was always under the impression that the Monarch's hate for Dr. Venture was sort of like the Joker's motives for doing anything. His own amusement but ultimately there is no reason. He's always just answered it as "because... he's my arch-enemy". Not that this episode gave any answers but I really hope there actually isn't a reason for it.

In Frank Miller's classic 'The Dark Knight Returns' graphic novel, we find out that there's a whole psycho-sexual underpinning with the Joker for Batman. I felt like they were doing a little bit of that with the Monarch. Screwing a robot with Dr. Venture's face on it? Too weird.

I don't think anyone mentioned the chute (beneath the throne in the cocoon) leading to the Monarchmobile. 24 decided to take the stairs instead, and he ended up getting there before the Monarch and 21 who had to endure a harrowing fall thru the chute - for no good reason as it turns out. :-D

I like the dialog between Mrs. Dr Monarch and the Monarch after killing Dr. Dugong. The Monarch would say why do I always have to be the bad guy, and she would go I'm trying to make you a bad guy. I though that was genius.
When the Monarch and his "goons" raided the Venture Compound I wonder where Dr. O and/or Trianna were? Wait Trianna might of been at an all night party.
As for the Guild, if I join would you ladies find me more attractive? Jul. 21, 2008, 11:06pm

I also really enjoyed the exchange between 21 and Hank. Their relationship is so hillariousely akward.

Dude. no need to defend everybody that I don't agree with. Obviously everything anyone says about art is based on their opinion, whether they state it or not. Doesn't mean I can't throw in my two cents. These boards are just boring if everybody agrees anyway, although I do find it humorous how seriously some of seem to take this whole deal.

I have really liked all the other eps so far. I did see that most of those posting here liked this one before I added my post. As I said, it had it's moments. Sometimes it takes a couple viewings for an ep to grow on me. This one didn't. I don't think it stank , just not as good as the others is all.....in my humble opinion. Thanks all! PS: Saw the newest ep. Two words: Freakin' awesome!

I'm gonna say that Dermott referring to himself as the "long lost son of Brock Samson" is even more red herringy goodness. More likely, I think, right now, that he's definitely Sergeant Hatred's son, but having seen Brock, he idolizes Brock now and would rather that was his father. OR ... Dermott's mom sent Dermott to camp to see his father, and he THINKS it's Brock (hence the disrespect, but idolizing) but in reality it'll be Hatred and SURPRISE KID, you have a pedophile for a father.

Why would it be Hatred? Dermott's mother sent him to the camp with the intentions of him meeting his father, and therefore knew his father would be there. But Hatred showed up spur of the moment due to a scheduling mishap. So how would she have known that would happen? It has to be someone whose presence at the camp was established.

I found this while trolling the web trying to get a fix for my Venture Jones.
Is this Dermot's mother?

Is this Dermot's half brother?

They are character designs from "Invisible Hand of Fate" (Lots of great stuff on this page including a drawing of OSI's S.H.E.I.L.D. like Heli-Carrier.)
I believe the profiles of the faces match the silhouette of Demott's mom from the end of "The Buddy System."
Also check out the clothing selection. Old army jacket that matches Dermot's.
This is my total fan wank on Dermot and his origins:
I believe Billy met Dermot's mother on the underground quiz boy circuit. During one hot night of passionate quiz boy love Dermott was conceived. Billy was then mind wiped by OSI so he has no recollection of losing his virginity.
All children in the Ventureverse are victims of unintentional abuse by seemingly oblivious or well meaning parents. Dermott may talk tough but he is a very frightened boy. Raised by his mother traveling on the dangerous and depraved underground quizboy circuit Dermot was exposed to many traumas just like Rusty, Johnny Quest, Trianna and the Venture Brothers. Dermot may have even been sexually molested thus his fear of being probed and wanting to protect his "cornhole."
Dean and Demott may in the future find common ground in sharing their traumatic childhood experiences with each other or worse Trianna and Dermot may find common ground by doing the same. Jul. 25, 2008, 11:50pm
