"What Color Is Your Cleansuit?" Discussion
This week's Shirt Club shirts have also been revealed: Palaemon Project and HankCo. Also there's still time to subscribe if you want all of the shirts, plus the subscriber exclusive.
The episode is also up on YouTube! Adult Swim put it up in full HD, even. I don't know how long it will hang around, but it's there in all its glory.

Ok, so much has happened, and it is so great! Before I forget, totally called the Monstroso reveal. Love Doc's Dr. No suit. Finally got answers about Billy's arch (who I believe was the guy from Quizboys) and Hatred's boobs. Can't wait to see where these mutations are going. Also, seems like most of the guests are in this ep.

THIS EPISODE IS FUCKING INSANE.
I LOVE IT.
Also, I realized a bit on that I got Colonel Manstrong and General Triester confused. I guess he's gone for good. :(
Anyway, the jumps in time make me wonder if the halloween episode isn't the only one occurring between moments. There are certain moments that suggest a lot has happened behind the scenes. Jun. 3, 2013, 12:46am

Trust Doc & Jackson to get the timeline right. As I can see it we start the day after PROM, skip ahead a few days to when Hatred and Dean are recruiting at State U, days (weeks) later Doc gives his big speech, then we jump over Halloween and plow into winter as they story comes to a head. This could be as late as February.

It's a homeschool pom though, not a regular prom. There's no guarantee that it's in June, as the learning beds don't follow a fall-spring school year.
Actually, since Operation: PROM takes place after the boys' summer internships, it seems likely that it's supposed to be towards late August/early September, in which case the timeline for college starting and Halloween coming before the delivery deadline works out reasonably well. The actual amount of time that passes durring the Shallow Gravy special is pretty small, so it could have conceivably taken place between when JJ calls Doc and when everyone is meeting in the kitchen.
So basically: Operation PROM -> First couple minutes of "Cleansuit" -> Shallow Gravy -> Next couple minutes of "Cleansuit" -> Halloween Special -> all the rest of "Cleansuit"
Which is bonkers, but awesome. Jun. 3, 2013, 7:01pm

That could also happen whenever, as long as it's before Halloween. The idea is that the Shallow Gravy thing actually took place over the course of a couple weeks (or possibly months), which makes sense given that it was a bunch of cut up interviews. The only discrepancy that needed to occur in a weird place is Dean's new look.

Booyah! She tracks down the antidote and responds to Dr. Venture's 'mutant army' the ethical way (not the Monarch way). I love it!
Loved the Klingon and Quenya language references. Pretty much the only almost-fully developed fake languages ever created.
I also loving Frisky Dingo on as a followup to VB. Also in my top 3 of best [as] shows ever. Jun. 3, 2013, 1:02am

I think it'll sooner cause some changes in Monarch's behavior/way of life. Apparently Gary is rather OK with his new "job" and I think we can expect more action for him in later episodes. But The Monarch is visibly uneasy. Will this make him accept that 21 can be his friend? Or that he doesn't need to hate everyone?
Jun. 3, 2013, 3:51pm
Bonus: The mechanical monarchs (they were tiny robots right?) that administered the anti-mutation treatment probably also got Dean, which would cure the clone mutations The Master mentioned in "The Better Man" (if those really existed, which I'm betting they did). Poor Hank didn't get the same treatment; his children will be horribly disfigured.
Jun. 3, 2013, 1:33am
I agree to disagree on how the anti-mutation works. Gene errors/changes occur extremely often and are later corrected before expression (almost all of the time). The cause of the sequence change should not have any affect on the correction procedure. Although in the real world, previous expression would not disappear along with the changes in DNA, THAT is something that only super-science can achieve! And super-science is the only thing that could cause consistent physiological mutations caused by radiation.
I'm not sure if The Master was exaggerating or not, either way Dean should be clean now! Jun. 3, 2013, 3:15pm

Well, that is why I was thinking it can't be the same thing. If Dean had messed up genetic code from all the cloning, that's one thing, but you can't just change someone's DNA and expect that a new pair of hands will grow overnight. As you say, it's "super-science", so I think it's distinct from the cloning errors.
Man, now that's a dorky discussion we're having. Jun. 3, 2013, 3:47pm
Man, now that's a dorky discussion we're having. Jun. 3, 2013, 3:47pm
Agreed. However we don't really know how clone slugs work. We know from "Perchance to Dean" that the same DNA does not mean expression of the DNA is always working correctly. While in clone-slug-form they may be more susceptible to mutagens, hydrolysis, errors, recombination, etc. And, if true, would explain why older clones are a 'gene septic tank'.

No. They were cloned once and multiple copies were made. They were never cloned a second (or third time). When one pair died another set was decanted but it was an exactly double of the first. And Dean's DNA can't be screwed up because his father would have noticed during the cloning and corrected that.

Just going to repost what I said down yonder at the AV Club:
I don't think I, or any of us expected for this to be as great as it was. I don't know if it's because I've been waiting two and a half years for this, but I think this may just be the series' best episode yet. It seems like it was the first one to actually manage to master the balancing act of pathos and humor Season 4 attempted to do with mixed results. And the reveal that Girly mag scientist was the quizboy who called out Billy in 'The Invisible Hand of Fate'? Brilliant. Jun. 3, 2013, 1:35am

Well, Billy was only made to cheat once. He seemed genuinely surprised in Invisible Hand Of Fate that his answer had been changed. He'd gotten by on his own skills before then. And people can look different when they grow up, especially if they're rich and can afford plastic surgery.

This was my interpretation, as well. Billy was only made to cheat once, but Todd's discovery would have destroyed Billy's credibility. The other contestants who had lost to Billy would wrongly conclude that he had been fed answers. St. Cloud would have been one of those earlier contestants.
The boy next to Billy in "Invisible Hand of Fate"--the one who calls Billy on his incorrect answer--is named Todd and looks nothing like St. Cloud. He also sounds nothing like St. Cloud (here I'm not talking about pitch, which would've changed with age, but rather about his verbal affectations). I don't think we're meant to conclude that they're the same person. Jun. 5, 2013, 12:29am

Though, St. Cloud's hair is confirmed as being wigs (Pe Wei is seen brushing one of at least 20!)?

I was concerned that articles in Slate and The Atlantic might be harbingers of leaping Selachii; but that was good.
I don't think the 94 Theses will be translatable. 38:27 Although a third or more of the words are written in Tengwar, or a plausible facsimilie, there is a real lack of the diacritics needed for actual words.
Would be happy to be proven wrong. Jun. 3, 2013, 3:13am

Whelp, i'm using my real name this time around, and i'm happy for both the shows return and such a great episode. Hopefully dean's love interest will return again (Wish I could remember her name) as she seems like the sorta anncilary character jackson and doc might discard (While they use minor characters beauitfully for the most part, some like Kim tend to get discarded if they can't do anything else with them). I also love billy getting an arch nemesis, Gary working for... well what's left of spynx anyway, and an overall amazing start to the season
Jun. 3, 2013, 2:11am
Indeed. I know the show is about failure and all that, but you can see Hank starting to break out of that cycle in the last couple of seasons. With this episode particularly, Dean is walking a similar but separate path. As the character who has likely been shat upon more than any other core character, I'd say its time to let him win one for a change and actually get the girl, so to speak. It certainly seems like she was tailored by Jackson and Doc as a near perfect complement to Dean, it'd be a shame to waste the potential on just one episode. Though given that this happens over several months, with several eps occurring in the meantime, it'll likely be at least halfway through the season before we know anything that happened AFTER this episode.
Jun. 3, 2013, 4:12pm
Yeah, but she's TOO perfect. She just comes to him and immediately makes those sexy eyes and then a few days later they're telling each other about their mutations... It's so easy. Where's the challenge? Do you really think Doc & Jackson are going to give Dean such an easy win just because he arguably deserves it? When for the past 4 seasons they had the ongoing "romance" between him and Triana and even that didn't lead anywhere?
No, I would rather suspect the return of Triana some time in the future, when Dean's more mature, or a new girl. This one was just a one-time character, to torment Dean with him being so close and then losing it, and then losing most memories about it. Jun. 3, 2013, 6:12pm

When I saw her in her first scene, I thought: "she's not gonna stick; she's totally gonna be either a villain in disguise, or like, a mentally retarded person or something, some kind of Arrested Development-like thing". Turned out to become a mutant, so I was kind of right. I doubt she'll show up again and hope she won't, not a very great character.
Jun. 3, 2013, 12:08pm
I can see underdeveloped (hard to avoid given how much else was packed in here). It would be interesting if we saw more tidbits over the course of the next several episodes that might flesh her out more. But her look and general attitude did seem like a good relative match for Dean, so maybe they'll go down this path a bit. Or not. Either way, I trust Jackson and Doc to make the right decision. :-)

The best part of the whole Thalia-Dean thing was when they first met on campus, Dean got hit by the Disc, then had that "hallucination" of sorts about a relationship with Thalia, and throughout the dream he kept having his genitals touched through his pants. Hilarious, understated animation.

According to the [as] bumps, as well as what previously seemed like a joke in an interview with Publick, the Halloween episode took place during the first commercial break, and the flow of the episode seems to back that up.
It's pretty weird, I'm gunna be honest. I wonder what other episodes took place during this one... Jun. 3, 2013, 3:00am

Unless I am totally confused--or missed something--the episode opens at day break--after the midnight blow up on the Venture Compound. So this takes place like a few hours after the Halloween episode--Night Rider brings back Dean, Hank was at Dermontt . . . and we can only wonder about what happened with Nikki! . . . and apparently Dr. Venture really did not care who he went to bed with.
Now did things happen in the 6-odd hours in between? Sure, why not? Jun. 3, 2013, 4:31am

I second (or third, I guess) the thought that Billy and Pete are being over-utilized. In the early seasons, their appearances were welcome--and generally hilarious--surprises. Now, their novelty has worn off.
Still, I grew up in an era when practically every episode of every TV show involved a character (1) in black sweats; (2) wearing a black "bandit hat"; and (3) sneaking around in the bad guy's home/lair. So I could live with the Billy/Pete storyline, here. Jun. 3, 2013, 1:31pm

Gawd, those awesome machine backgrounds, long shots of the compound!

Awesome episode. But I will actually disagree with many of you here -- I didn't think it was one of the best. It looked great, animation was fantastic (best yet), the music was phenomenal, the action scenes towards the end were pretty great, but it definitely lacked in the humor department. Although I can live with that and actually wouldn't mind seeing like, a full-length Venture Bros. action movie with elements of comedy.
Also the other thing I didn't quite like was that all the voices sounded even more alike than usual. That is sometimes The Monarch sounded like Hatred or Billy sounded too much like 21. Jun. 3, 2013, 12:20pm

I'm loving the drama and character development of the newer episodes, but I miss the silly fun of older ones. I'm rewatching Love Bheits right now and this dialog about the best costume contest -- THAT is hilarious. "Last year it was Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion and... the Bat." "The night is mine."

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I was pumped to see the return of Doc's hovercraft (or "floating platform," as they called it in this episode). I love the design and have always thought it was squandered on a throw-away scene in "The Doctor Is Sin."
I also liked that Doc and Jackson returned to the E-Den, but was somewhat disappointed with the scenes that took place there.
Maybe the guys will continue to utilize interesting props and locations from previous seasons. I'm a sucker for that stuff. Jun. 3, 2013, 1:19pm

I this is my favorite ep. so far. I like how Billy and Pete are coming into their own for this season. Sure people like to see them as guest now and then but their thriving as characters in this middle season. Besides, there'll be plenty of other characters to share the spotlight in this season. Glad this episode explains why Hatred has tits.
Jun. 3, 2013, 3:54pm
But I don't think it does. Hatred has manboobs ever since the beggining of the episode.

Wow, the Monarch was an ass in this one. I thought he wasn't Dr. Girlfriend's boss anymore but her partner? She seems to be walking on eggshells with the 21 thing, and he's back to treating her the way he did before they got married. Their relationship seems to be off to a bad start this season.

Agreed and with Captain V Bro as well. This is a whole "faux breakup" where a guy has a break up--this is generally a "Guy Thing" [Tm.--Ed.]--but cannot admit it, does not want to admit it to his friends who politely shift their feet and try not to hurt him further, because they KNOW. Yeah, I feel the same way. I wonder if there's any way they'll use the 10 episode order for next season, and use it for 5 mega hour episodes? Sure, we'd be getting less total episodes, but the same amount of hours. If they're all as good as PROM and Cleansuit, I think I'd be okay with it.

No. I didn't feel like that show really justified its length. The half-hour length forces Doc and Jackson to compress a lot of business into an episode, whiic is why they are so often epic, but 'Cleansuit' seemed flaccid. PROM had a lot of business going on, enough to fill the hour length. Cearsuit, not so much.

Trivia
It would appear that St. Cloud has the Ark of the Covenant - real or movie prop. Also the boy's hover bike. But what's the deal with the chairs? Chippendale chairs? is this a Tick reference?
I've seen those model of computers in Venture's lab. They use 8 inch floppy disks. But what make and model are they?
When Watch and Ward show St. Cloud a selection of scientists to arch, who is the one and only one they show. Memory suggests Dr. Quyrm but I can't read the legend under the picture. Jun. 3, 2013, 10:22pm

And... another thousand word comment coming right up!
Overall - Awesome, gets better every time I rewatch it. I will admit it felt a bit fast-paced the first time through. Since it's both the beginning and the end of the season, I guess I can even look forward to the next season too?
I freely admit I didn't get half of the sci-fi references made in this show until I looked them up. My nerdiness is insufficient to the task...
The art in this is SO COOL. That first warm-up of the machine or whatever? SO COOL!!!
Dean's crush on the girl (Talia?) was kind of adorable. I expected it to either go farther or not quite so far somehow... he got a legitimate make-out, but I'm pretty sure that's all? Not that he's ready, even now - he pretty clearly doesn't have any concept of sex beyond "pretty" "kissing" and "touch a boob". Oh, and "maybe a pretty girl will touch me where I touch myself" (that was hilarious! agree with above comment, the robot made the joke.) He also still has a good deal of shame mixed in with the raging hormones - he couldn't even look directly at her when he thought she was undressing. A good, if rather sad, connection to his own dad's "needless shame"...
I have to comment that Dean in the completely ridiculous "Indian" competition was almost certainly in the best shape of his life. Quite a contrast to the pudge he was starting to sprout in Season 4. Wonder if there's a reason for that?
In non-relationship development: Burning the learning bed was awesome, I was hoping for that for half of last season. Boy Detective bit it - Did Mr. Reachy survive?! And he has the same room now that the clone had in Season 4... that's pretty legit dark tbh.
He and Hank nodding to each other as they go to their separate rooms was both completely accurate and strangely melancholy - nothing will ever be the same again.
And how about Hank!! He was awesome here, painting his room rad colors, running Hank Co like a boss (can we doubt that his future is in business any more at this point??) and managing to stay out of trouble somehow. Actually I credit that more to...
Dermott - still around, seemingly in a hell of a lot more danger than usual. We didn't see a ton of him, because he was keeping his head low this entire episode. There was a power shift somewhere over the season - he is definitely second-place to Hank in every scene. Bet we'll go into that at some point! Though to Dermott's credit (I can't believe I wrote that) I think he has significantly more survival instincts than, well, Hank, and possibly Dean too. I think he's the only brother who inherited any of Rusty's survival sense.
NIkki is kind of a creepy creeper mccreepersson in this, frankly. I don't begrudge Hank his conquest or whatever, but I seriously hope he doesn't ever sleep with her again.
Billy and Pete getting an arch was best thing. Best! St. Cloud's outfit is the most hilariously lame thing I've ever seen, I love him just for that alone. And the pennies joke, Eat the pennies!
21 getting left in the dust by OSI was kind of sad... but he seems to be used to being sh!t on, yet another legacy of the Monarch no doubt. When he finally steps up to try to fix the mess of the episode, he is truly awesome! I hope he really becomes a leader of men - one one side or the other - before the end of the series...
Monarch is pretty much a gag character in this episode, but his "Your'e my best friend!" realization towards his wife at the end of the episode was genuinely heart-warming. Hopefully he'll, uh, treat her a little bit better next season? I admit it's the first time I've really "got" their relationship on anything other than intellectual terms *ducks*
Dr Girlfriend kicked major ass, of course. She's the one who actually solved the problem! And she did it... with an actual practical usage of the butterfly theme! Come to think of it, isn't she always the one who solves the real problems?
Who have I left out? Uh, Hatred, Courtney Hatred. I'm sure that name explains all his issues. And the boobs seemed to have been growing throughout the episode? I still believe they were brought on by meds, I will believe unless told otherwise.
Rusty is Rusty. He'll be the one thing at the end of VB that never changes.
Okay, enough, I loved the episode, and they managed to fit in every single damn Star Wars reference in this one episode they couldn't get to in the previous 4 seasons. Kudos, and can't wait until next week!! Jun. 3, 2013, 11:42pm

2.5 year wait actually had me forgetting this, although Season 1 going up on NetFlix spurred the memories and desires for more VB adventures in me. Best cartoon running. I was extra-pleased to discover that the Halloween special I'd completely blanked on already existed to - two-fer!
Yeah, it was great fun. I can see some seeds for some real hilarious installments. I thought Monarch ending the episode tripping out and thinking of his wife as his best friend might close the book on his wanting 21 back, actually. Not that they won't bump into each other and god knows what else will go down.
Minimal Brock is always ... not a letdown, but a Cocktease. Ditto Shore Leave, actually. "Th.P.H.I.N.X.!"
I really like how when he goes almost super-villain levels of reprehensible, Rusty lucks out and accomplishes things (how much of it comes down to Sheila being the only competent human being around other than Brock, I dunno). The actual build-up for a J.J. adventure on orbital Gargantua-2 would be an absolutely ideal place for the Revenger's Squad or whatever, Phantom Limb, Impossible and Unterbheit, to show up and wreak havoc upon - lots of scores to settle up there.
And Dean's inner monologue is great. Been there buddy ... so glad real-live girls can't hear my thoughts. (As was that continual fantasy where she ... and robots ... kept reaching for his junk.) Jun. 4, 2013, 12:45am

That's a weird symmetry between Hank and Dean now in that both of their most vital memory has been taken away from them. Hank voluntarily had his memory erased so as to not have to deal with the fact that he screwed his best friend's mother. And Dean's memory of Thalia was wiped out by his father's narcotics. When Hank tells Dean to check his watch it wasn't juist a call back to Everybody comes to Hanks" It's an acknowledge that something wonder has happened to each of them and they'll never know what.

My one complaint is all the new episodes have mutants or zombies in them: the prom had fly mutants, Halloween had zombies, Cleansuit had mutants, and next weeks episode has animal hybrid human mutants.
Well, most people will see this as a good thing... but I would like more aliens and robots dammit... oh, well.... IGNORE ME!!!!! Jun. 4, 2013, 5:06pm

Can Dr. Theopolis really be considered a "robot"? He has no locomotion of his own, or any sort of moving parts at all. This is from Wikipedia: "Theopolis, or Theo for short, was an intelligent computer who was part of Earth's Computer Council."
So, both Billy AND Augustus were wrong! Unless they ever referred to Theo as a robot on the show I suppose. Jun. 4, 2013, 7:58pm

Wouldn't it be great to have a book of who is who from this show? Doc mentioned he did a whole write up on Dr. Dugong. Sure there is something (sea) deep beyond the chemi-fusion, & love care line. Jun. 5, 2013, 12:01am

I believe the term 'robot' is being defined on how it was referenced on the television show or movie. I believe Twiki, Dr. Theopolis, HELPeR, and the Walking Eye were each called a robot at some point on their respective television shows, but Nomad was never called a robot on Star Trek. I believe the quizboys are allowing each universe to define what a 'robot' in in their world. I believe that is being quite particular on the meaning of a word in a question, but that's just how ruthless the quizboy world of quizing is!

Haven't had time to go through all the comments (Wow. It sure has gotten a lot more crowded her the last couple of seasons). Anywho, I just wanted to speculate that the Lee-Hun-Took was probably taken from Bruce Lee, Attila the Hun and Peregrin Took perhaps. Probably pretty obvious, but I just wanted to throw that out there.

Anyone wanna take bets about this being next door, or close to, Venture Industries?

Maybe. The Venture compound is clearly somewhere in the Southwest, and the building in the link is a fairly close match. I've always imagined the compound in California (the surrounding mountains look a lot like the Sierras, and the Ventures are apparently within driving distance of San Diego, San Francisco, and the Grand Canyon), but I suppose it could be in Utah.

I was looking for some way to post notes to the capsule and couldn't find a way so I'll leave the notes where:
1. When The Monarch and DRGF return from the Prom the Monarch darts the cabbie instead of paying him. This is the second time he's done this. The first was in the Captain Sunshine ep.
2. Gorillas are vegetarians so why use meat to lure them out of the E-den? Ansd how does one have two infant gorillas when there's only one adult?
3. Dean's fantasy with Thalia ends with him dressed like Luke Starwalker fighting cylons but the classic SW poster does not have Leia touching Luke's leg. However there is a similar Conan cover by Frank Frazetta which has a young woman clinging to Conan's leg.
4. The out-of-phase intern I think refers back to The Philadelphia Experiment, a SF film about teleportation research in WWII that goes horribly wrong. Also the intern who's out-of-phase is the intern that disintegrated during the proof-of-concept scene.
5. When Thalia brings in Dean to fight Martin it was with the intent to stop the Second Age and world wide mutation, but by the time everyone is celebrating the Hun-Lee-Hook she's is all for the Second Age indicating that she's succumb to group-think. Jun. 11, 2013, 10:51am

"When The Monarch and DRGF return from the Prom the Monarch darts the cabbie instead of paying him."
I laughed my ass off at this. I love the idea that the Monarch avoids cab fare by darting the drivers.
"Gorillas are vegetarians so why use meat to lure them out of the E-den?"
The same thought occurred to me. One of the things I appreciate about Peter Jackson's "King Kong" is that the big gorilla eats trees in the way real gorillas eat bamboo. In the older versions, it was implied that Kong ate the humans offered to him by local villagers.
"[H]ow does one have two infant gorillas when there's only one adult?"
Maybe there were two and one (the female, apparently) died prior to the Ventures' first exploration of the E-den? That was my assumption, anyway. Jun. 12, 2013, 12:17pm
