The way the Monarch refuses to acknowledge that 21 has quit leaves the door open for 21 to return to the Cocoon, which I expect will happen by season's end. Leave Gary with an abandoned SPHINX will only lead to boredom on Gary's part.

I think it'll sooner cause some changes in Monarch's behavior/way of life. Apparently Gary is rather OK with his new "job" and I think we can expect more action for him in later episodes. But The Monarch is visibly uneasy. Will this make him accept that 21 can be his friend? Or that he doesn't need to hate everyone?

Either that or we're beginning an arc indicating a transition toward Hatred being transitioned away from body-guarding in preparations for Gary to take on the role of Venture bodyguard. Gotta admit, he did a fine job here.

Maybe rightfully so. This episode was rough on the poor fella.

He definitely still has a lot of issues to work out. Hopefully he can find some sort of peace, or at least an assignment that works for him.
