Believe this, Ask Jeeves!
The capsule and junk for Handsome Ransom is finally up. Notes seem a little light this episode, so feel free to point out all the stuff I forgot (if you're shy you can email them to me). Enjoy! Also don't forget Perchance to Dean is on Sunday night at midnight. There's a fancy preview clip in the update right below this one.

More similarities to Batman (yes, I am a huge Batman nerd):
The statue outside of Captain Sunshine's mansion says "Wonderboy III - So long, old chum" This references: the many different Robins (there have been 5 in continuity, plus a 6th (Carrie Kelly) who is generally well-liked out of continuity), the Jason Todd memorial in the Batcave (Todd's empty Robin uniform encased in glass), and the Adam West Batman frequently using the phrase "old chum" on the old tv series.
Desmond is an obvious parallel to Alfred Pennyworth.
Hank saying he was in the circus references the first Robin Dick Grayson's origin as a child circus performer.
Captain Sunshine's car, other than the color scheme, is a lot like the Batmobile. And Scorpio having a Scorpion-themed car is very Batman-ish as well. Back in the day all of Batman's enemies had a -mobile. Jokermobile (which we all know from the Christmas episode), Catwoman's Catmobile... hell, Killer Moth had a Mothmobile.
Oh, and this isn't relevant or anything, but the giant penny came from this guy in 1947:

Not Two-face, like many people seem to think. There was an episode of the Batman cartoon (with Kevin Conroy!) where their universe's giant penny did come from Two-face, but the real origin is that penny-themed villain. Oct. 31, 2009, 9:12pm

Yeah, the penny was originally from Penny Plunderer, but it was pretty much retconed to be from Two Face at this point. I think the animated series was where that started. I thought about mentioning that in the capsule but it didn't seem too relevant, but I might still add it.
The other stuff is good too, thanks! Nov. 1, 2009, 1:40am

There was a Two-Face comic where Batman is tied to a giant two sided coin--based on the Two-Face coin--which is flipped at a bed of spikes. Batman is DOOMED!--since his mass should force the coin to land Batman-down.
But . . . due to his Somthing Something Bat-Magnetic Thingy Bat-thing . . . he repels. I thought that coin was kept in the Batcave . . . but I guess I was wrong.
Curses!
But, yeah, it is a great hommage to Batman and Super Huge Steve Cobert Sucks Kudos to Conroy for doing the part! Nov. 1, 2009, 12:08pm

Just two things of interest for now.
This episode is only the second time Dr. Venture has referred to The Monarch by name, the other being Are You There God, It's Me Dean.
And no one mentioned that Captain Sunshine's sunshine powers are kinda like Birdman's ray's that project from his fists. Oct. 31, 2009, 10:15pm

I think Birdman just had to recharge frequently. It's not like you shut the blinds and he's powerless, but it seemed like he only got a few shots from his rays before he ran out of juice.
The Birdman analogy is perfect, though, in that he was cornered by the bad guy, seemingly in an impossible situation, and then miraculously got recharged. I think that happened in every single Birdman episode. Nov. 1, 2009, 6:17am

A few more things:
The end narration is a Super Friends reference, one of several. The Adam West Batman series is also referenced several times, such as seatbelt thing, which is a reference to how it got an award from the National Safety Council for promoting buckling up in the car. Also, Coptor 5 is a reference to WNBC's Chopper 4 and the Sklar Brothers routine about it. Very funny, if you've never seen it. http://comedians.comedycentral.com/sklar-brothers/videos/the-sklar-brothers---chopper-4. Oct. 31, 2009, 11:15pm

Captain Sunshine was mentioned two other times in the series before this episode. The second mention comes in the episode Powerless in the Face of Death during the henchmen meeting. If you listen carefully, Herman the henchman (or Charlie the henchman) mentions Captain Sunshine being responsible for the downfall of Crimeodile:
"Anyway, Captain Sunshine kept on his tail, kept on it, ship goes down, Captain Sunshine takes down one more evil doer."
Captain Sunshine also is mentioned by the Monarch at the Guild ball during the story he tells Truckules and Sheila in the Shadowman 9 episode. It's interesting that so early in The Monarch's career he was battling the big guys like Captain Sunshine.
"And then Captain Sunshine pulls the trigger and, of course, nothing. To this day, he still thinks I'm invulnerable." Nov. 1, 2009, 12:25am

Damn! I forgot the Powerless in the Face of Death reference! You did not mention--probably because it was mention in the other commentary--that he is also mentioned by The MONARCH asking if the "charred remains of Wonderboy" have been "sent to Captain Sunshine" in his list of instructions to 24 and 21 at the beginning of Return to Spider Skull Island.

They did manage to shrink Sgt. Hatred, so it had to be working at work at some point within the time frame of the episode, so the batteries had to have run out of juice. If Pete's aim hasn't improved, it may have taken him several shots to get the job done right. Or maybe the superheated phosphates were no longer heated enough.

As mentioned in "Tag Sale" I'm pretty sure the shrink-ray runs on super-heated phosphates. Which you can get in Merikesh, by the way. Unless it's overrun with molemen ( Listen to the season 1 commentary.)
Of corse, I could be wrong, I mean after all, Brock mentions in Return to Spider Skull Island, that the X-1 is powered by Nuclear engines, but in Love-Beights, Doc says it runs on Experamental Jet Fuel. So who knows!......Man I am such a nerd. Nov. 2, 2009, 10:04am

I'm pretty sure the name of Captain Sunshine's Sanctum Solarium is also a homage (at least in name) to Marvel's Doctor Strange's base, the Sanctum Sanctorum ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctum_Sanctorum ).

Hey Mike,
Great job with the Capsule, Always appreciated;
However, you managed to leave out why Capn' Sunshine says to the monarch that he "May be inviulnerable...."
That was a throw-back to shadowman 9. The monarch is telling Truckulese and Queen atheria a story at a party, in which he mentions Captain sunshine tried to shoot him with a ray gun, with it's safety on.
And Here I thought The Monarch was making crap up to impress Queen atheria, but NO! apparently, it Really happened! Or, you know, "Really" in the cartoon.
Anyway, thanks again, Mike. Nov. 2, 2009, 9:55am

True, but he's more of a Superman shape. Of course, he had those moles or whatever they were on his upper back and Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law dealt with a potential mole in one of its episodes. So it's probably a bit of each, mixed in with a healthy dose of Batman's personality.
