Don't think anyone's noticed this one yet, but the shrink ray didn't malfunction, Pete just forgot to make sure the batteries were charged. You can barely hear it but that's what they were arguing about when hatred was radioing venture towards the end of the episode.

The way I heard it, it sounded like White didn't put the batteries in it, either way, the batteries were the problem.

They did manage to shrink Sgt. Hatred, so it had to be working at work at some point within the time frame of the episode, so the batteries had to have run out of juice. If Pete's aim hasn't improved, it may have taken him several shots to get the job done right. Or maybe the superheated phosphates were no longer heated enough.

As mentioned in "Tag Sale" I'm pretty sure the shrink-ray runs on super-heated phosphates. Which you can get in Merikesh, by the way. Unless it's overrun with molemen ( Listen to the season 1 commentary.)
Of corse, I could be wrong, I mean after all, Brock mentions in Return to Spider Skull Island, that the X-1 is powered by Nuclear engines, but in Love-Beights, Doc says it runs on Experamental Jet Fuel. So who knows!......Man I am such a nerd.
