Discussion: Pomp & Circuitry
Oh, fancy seeing you here! It's time for our weekly open discussion of Venture Bros.. This week's episode is entitled "Pomp & Circuitry". As always, keep discussion civil and try not to be a jerk. You're all good kids though, so I'm sure there won't be any problems. Also fair warning: the comments will likely be full of spoilers, so if you haven't seen the episode yet then you might want to take that into consideration. Don't forget to vote on the episode after you've seen it!
This episode will be online on Adult Swim Video in a week and a day (9/27) but last week's episode will be up on the site tomorrow. It will probably be on iTunes at some point tomorrow as well.
And finally if you're desiring even more Venture, I have podcast interview with series creators Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer from Friday and you also have until Wednesday to enter to win a Monarch tshirt.

Maybe not. Phantom Limb is viable again and Richard is a bad dude. This show is getting pretty crazy-- an entire episode of buildup for something bigger? Really!?
That said, I really enjoyed it. They're rewarding the hell out of long-time viewers right now, and I can't wait to see Underbheit back in action. Sep. 19, 2010, 11:59pm

But they went through enough trouble making him unrecognizable though his voice AND they mentioned he was some sort of expert, but in the way that they mention something like that and it becomes important later. Totally someone we know and it's going to be a shocker. Bud Manstrong? lol just kidding.
But, was it just me or did he look quite a bit like when Leia dressed up like Boushh in ROTJ? Sep. 20, 2010, 6:04am

I didn't think much of him at first, but now that you brought it up, it's buggin' the hell out of me. Action Johnny? As mentioned, Hunter said he was some sort of "expert" and the guy was trying to pick an electronic lock (which seems to be one of Shore Leave's specialities). More thought is required but the guy could just be a red herring.

This is a long shot but I was thinking that it could be the real 24 that has been in hiding since his untimely "death". Maybe 21 is just a little crazy and is imagining the whole ghost thing. I think it would be pretty cool to see 21 and 24 go up against each other unknowingly since 21 looks nothing like he did before and as far as he knows 24 is dead. How bad would it be if 21 killed 24 in battle only to find out in 24's final words who he just killed. Sounds like a Greek tragedy :P

Well 21 and 24 would be "against" each other in the looses form of the word. Rememberm 21 has helped out Sphinx too. And It wouldnt have to be that 24 is hiding, but the explosion was a diversion created by Gathers and tie into the initial creation of Sphinx.
And I dont think calling him an "expert" proves it wasnt him. 21 didnt exactly used to be a pro at anything, but has made something of himself over the same amount of time. Sep. 22, 2010, 9:52am

I got the point too, but still whereas deans mooustache(and yes I added the extra O on purpose) is barely visable, hanks hair was awesome looking and a very visable sign of the change. Hopefully he keeps the jacket at least. But yeah brock was right:He is just trying to be him. But his awesomeness does show he has potential.

Did. Not. Disappoint. (except for the end, that was a bit forced) I very much enjoyed this episode. Best line was Doc's line about Take Back The Night. Soo happy that Underbeit is back. This was Hank's best episode ever. He is soo Batman for once. Having Phantom Limb back in the game is going to be interesting for sure. His action scene were incredible. Dr. Impossible, still not sure about him. He's got a bit to go still. The germ guy (forgot his name, something related to Dr. Phineas T. Phibes) was funny in his lameness. Overall, thumbs up with a few minor exceptions.

I don't know if this is an actual mistake or not but what happened to Phantom Limb's appearance between being in the building and getting chased out of it and yelling to Richard?
I'm guessing fake mustache but he has the prosthetic limbs and when he's calling to Prof. Impossible, he's got invisible limbs and his old costume back. Sep. 20, 2010, 12:09am

It's not so much the change I that was nagging me but that fact that he didn't have the fake limbs anymore. How was he running around? Or was it more like he was hopping?
Perhaps there's a deleted scene? Also, I would like to know what was up with the Revenge Society all of a sudden being sentient. Haha. Sep. 20, 2010, 12:16am

I actually felt bad for rusty. I mean he was being a bit.... a colassoal.... a jerkassdick but the point is... acually I feel bad for dean, rusty was being a massive tool. But to realize your dad dragged you hear and the only reason they even let you in was because of your uncle? that's gotta suck. and Billys right, while doc isn't nearly as bad as his own father, his own isolation has left the boys socially hopless. and it doesn't help that hank and deans only friends outside have been a teenage girl bareley intrested in dean and a massive tool who's also a pathological liar.

This time I am soooo not loking forward to next week. It just doesn't sound like the plots gonna move forward. But this episode... wow. As I commented above, Dean and Hank(or at least hank) showed some development and we learn that rusty still doesn't realize that he's doing what his dad.

I forgot about the Phantom Guild(that's what i'm callin it for now) not only is that a awesome idea but now, after 9 episodes, we finally have a big bad again. Well we didn't have one at all in season 3 and people consider the monarch one but still....
And I think doctor I will find a good new name. Sep. 20, 2010, 12:47am

Actually if you'll notice, Phantom Limb is the best big bad of the sereis(The monarch's well, the monarch and Sgt.Hatred was purposflly being polite.) but he fails personally(the monarch pays more attention to her, he just got jelous.) and his mental state is far from perfect. Plus his entire team is made of failures:Impossible totally snapped after his failure with sally, and Underbehit turned into a bum after losing his kingdom. Nedless to say they are still failures, but limb knows how to turn them into the evil team they could be.

Phantom Limb is like the only Guild member (or former Guild member at this point I guess) who seems to want to be actually evil and not just evil within sanctioned limits. Season 2 was about him wanting to control the Guild but now he seems like he just wants to get rid of the Guild entirely.

this ain't no tag sale episode. and THERE WERE 2 IN SEASON 3. my faviorite the buddie system and Now musem, both classics. But one of those is traditionally set on the venture compound, musem being the exception and involve wacky hyjncks. And sorry if I sound a bit Fan Dumb here, but i'm very very protective of this type of episode but eh we'll see but I doubt it.

I don't count Buddy System in my Tag Sale category. There's no clusterf*ck fight in that one. What I mean was basically lampshaded by Rusty near the end of Museum, how when you get a bunch of costumed guys together, they start throwing down eventually. I'm talking more in the tradition of Tag Sale, You're It, not the trope.

A lot of VB fans waste their time speculating about things that you're obviously not supposed to speculate about: 24's death, the fight with Monstroso, the origins of the boys' DNA, etc.
They spent a lot of screen time and a number of lines in the script alluding to the rookie's identity while still keeping it ambiguous. There doesn't seem to be an actual joke for that to be the "punch line" to. I'm not losing sleep over it or even bothering to venture a guess as to the rookie's identity, but it seemed too intentional to be totally throwaway. Sep. 22, 2010, 11:32am

I watched the preview for next week and this is what I can figure on the council of 13...
There's a scene where there are 11 people at a round table,12 if you count the 2 heads, assuming they are the council of 13. This is where it gets very speculative...
The 13th I believe is kidnapped along with 21 and the rest of the gladiators because when 21 is thrown back into the stall all bloody he is thrown in with an old man as well that would fit the build of the council of 13.
Now in all of this I do not see anyone that resembles Dr. Z. Perhaps they go out of their way to hide their identities and dress in a manor that would obscure their silhouettes and make them look/sound like well known villains.
That's my $0.02 Sep. 20, 2010, 8:36pm

"Indo China" , I double like!
The flying of the impossible flag was genius. The speech that went on forever to cover battlebots and diamond dog blow out.
Homeless (anti) heroes. Wunderbar!
This episode was something approaching epic-wonderful perfect point oh one. Who put the movement on the floor of the contention chamber for dark scrutiny? Not I. Sep. 20, 2010, 12:52pm

All of those would be really good carrers for dean. Okay you'd have take "Boy" out of the former 2 but he'd make both a great marine bioligist(He sucks as a super sciencst but he's great at normal science.) and stay at home dad(He's a nice guy, a bit effeminite, but would be a 10 times better dad than that jackass of his father)* But the boys are still stuck in childhood and those beds have done no good.

I was watching next weeks preview, frame by frame of course, and I noticed that the scene where the OSI and the Guild were in the same room with a metal detector Brock and Hunter were in line for the detector in their underwear. I guess Sphinx is no longer covert after this week??

Damn! So much to think about! I couldn't sleep for hours last night after that one as my head was swimming.
1. The representatives for General Consolidated Insurance (where Pete and Billy got their big settlement check from) sure looked like Monstroso's men with the pinstriped suits. Maybe they're connected somehow with The Guild (dramatic pause) of Collegiate Investors too, and maybe also something else with the initials GCI.
2. One of those Guild Battle Bots was in the background preseason three character montage teaser artwork. All other characters shown were in season three except for it, unless I missed something. Maybe in a deleted scene? Otherwise, I think this was their first appearance.
3. Kudos to Hank for passing all of Hunter's "tests". The first one brings back memories of when my two brothers and I were kids. My youngest bro would always bug us, so I, being the eldest, invented a game called "escape artist". We'd tie him up with ropes, belts and bungee cords and tell him we were timing him. Then we'd go off and do something else, like play with our original Kenner Star Wars figures. My favorite time was when an elderly couple driving down our street pulled over when they saw a six year old kid tied to a tree in the front yard. Man, I didn't see TV for a month after that. Good times!
4. I was just thinking near end of the episode how it would be cool if Underbheit would be part of Phantom Limb's new guild, and then he walks in and asks if he can join.
5. If Professor Impossible is a bad guy now, he may want to relocate. That building isn't exactly a secret lair. And I love how that photo from Now Museum comes back into play. You knew it would somehow, and you know they're not done with it yet. Sep. 20, 2010, 9:58pm

For real, this is a good start to a second half of a season. I'm curious to know if the Guilds are directly working together, or if monstroso is kind of using Calamitous Intent. ALSO!!
Does anyone realize that it is probably Monstroso (through the collegiate investors) that funded Phantom Limbs change into a super villain?? In my opinion, he will almost definitely be a big part of Limbs new guild... which I will hence forth refer to as The Guild!!! (dramatic pause) of Corrupt Intellectuals. Sep. 21, 2010, 1:31am

Phantom Limb (in a wheel chair with shriveled arms and legs
the other two are hard to notice. one has a jersey with a big V on it (maybe part of the venture crew?) and the other one looks like some sort of camper.with big fuzzy hair Sep. 21, 2010, 9:12am

Also... in a bit of shameless self promotion...
For those who remember the song "For 24" by The Grocery Boys that won the 24 tribute awhile back... well I am the one who wrote and recorded and sang everything on that track and my new bands record is up on iTunes under "Tear The Place Apart!" for less than ten bucks. It is chock full of songs of pirates and love. Sooooo, if you like ska/punk and helping out fellow venture fans... purchase it?
Also, if anyone wants to be friends outside of the VentureForums you can find me on Facebook, under than name Sid Broderius.
Shameless self promotion, over.
