Fallen Arches Discussion
Another Friday, another discussion! It's 6pm EST, which means Fallen Arches should now be up on Adult Swim Fix for your viewing pleasure. As is the custom you can use the comments to talk about the episode or anything else that strikes your fancy. For you folks who will wait for the TV version (either from necessity or by choice), it will air at the usual time of 10:30pm EST on Sunday. And as always, the comments will probably have spoilers, so if you don't want anything given away, don't read them just yet! Enjoy!

I was so pissing my pants laughing at that Dr. V doing the carwash scene from Cool Hand Luke!!! I was sort of right about (Ex) Dr. Girlfriend going back to being an arch-villian on her own again, or at least trying to. Can't wait to see if she takes another stab at it.
Yikes! The Monarch is like getting extra super creepy now!

Thanks to fuckin' bitch-ass dial-up I gotta ask the question.....Where would you rank this episode from 1 to 8?????Maybe some day my parents will stop being cheap and upgrade this gay-ass shit so I can join you in watching these new episodes 2 before they air. Not only that but you can watch the episodes as many times as you want. I can only enjoy these fuckin' masterpieces 2 times a week. Oh yeah, why the fuck did [adult swim] take off the rerun day of the Venture Bros?????That was fucking stupid!!!!Not everyone can watch that goddamn fucking Fix shit. Be considerite for the people who don't have High-speed internet. Assholes........I feel left out. My feelings are hurt. Will someone hold me??????

I loved this one. I really liked the bits with Hank and Dean trying to keep Triana entertained. Very weird. The lame Guild villains were good, too. Dr. Girlfriend didn't make too threatening a villain, even with a couple of midgets as backup.
The Monarch's really lost it. He's gone over the edge. It's going to be fun watching what happens to him later on. Sep. 2, 2006, 4:42am

I liked this episode, quite a bit. It hasn't got as many laugh-riots per square inch as assassinanny or VEN, but a killer story and great writing. Things I liked:
-Venture's version of "the talk".
-Yet another piece of flying equipment stolen from Sgt Hatred. That dude's going to be pissed at the Monarch.
-Jefferson's asking the alchemist if he was still gay, and the reply, made me think of a similar scene in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Both scenes make me giggle. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and plug that film here. It's got a shitty name, but it makes me think of VB, in that it's a good concept wrapped in great writing and dialogue.
-Also thrilling is that the show is actually going to have a black character. Even though he is a bit 70's stereotypical, it's OK because it's pretty much his costume, and two katanas makes him a badass. What's with his strange speach patterns though? And what's with 2 wizards and a warrior? The third one's supposed to be like, an archer or something.
-Deeper. Deeper. DEEPER.
-The Monarch making a sinister Monarch speach while crawling across his bed in a pink bathrobe.
-The following Red Dragon moment. My only issue is that it was perhaps a bit too obvious a rip, and I finished reading that book YESTERDAY, so it's also kinda spooky.
-I imagine Torrid as being played by Jasan Statham when they finally remake all the episodes as live-action movies with all-star casts.
-Blaculas. This COULD count toward the "names as nouns" list, but it's understandable in this case because Jefferson couldn't find a better descriptive name.
-Also spooky, I was replaying Max Payne 2 earlier today, and one of the shows blaring on TVs is "Lords and Ladies". I don't know what specific play Dean was performing, but they are both clearly riffing on the same thing. And Brock did a lovely job.
-Pretty much everything having to do with the Walking Eye. Also, all of Rusty's animation in the wash scene was really well done and expressive. Someone took a long time to get that just right... and I weep for them.
-I think we can all agree that as long as Dr. Girlfriend continues to come up with short-skirted costumes, we will have an easier time ignoring the voice.
-Somewhere along the line Hank became hugely funny, and I approve.
-The image of 24 spinning around with jetpacks on either side of his torso was downright cute. It does trouble me that the 21/24 plot point, while good for laughs, didn't really seem to be going anywhere. But it's an excuse for lots of the clever 1-on-1 conversations I love VB for, so it can stay.
-The snake eye icon thing is ultra-classy, and I like that unlike the Venture effect, which lights them from behind, this one comes out in front... and can be seen from the back.
Also, I can't quite figure out where this episode fits in the grand scheme of things. It's after VEN because Dr. Girlfriend is on her own, but before Love-Bheits because Underbheit and the Monarch arn't roomies. I'd love to see a difinitive ordered list at some point.
I'm seeing a problem of sorts arising from this show's character list and writing. Hank and 21/24 say so many funny things, they can now join the list (Brock, The Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Dr. Orpheus, Mr. White and Billy Quizboy) of characters it's seemingly impossible to get enough of. You can only fit so much awesome in 22 minutes of airtime, so by season 3 I suspect the opening music/montage is going to be the Venture Brothers Skull flashed for approximately 2 milliseconds. Oh, and also worth mentioning is the fact that the fix now has the entire first season of Venture Brothers. Being the DVD-less goober that I am, this will finally allow me to relive the classics, and give everyone else who has been hooked by season 2 a chance to see where it came from.

I thought Jefferson Twilight's comments sounded familiar about how when he said he fights Blackulas, he was asked if he meant African American vampires. He responded by saying sometimes fights British vampires (becasue if they're British and black, you can't say they are African American).
Some of you may be already familiar with Maddox and his website "The best page in the universe" http://maddox.xmission.com/
In one of his updates from 5/6/06 he writes about suggested ideas from readers and how stupid they can be. One person asks him to write about African Americans and he responds by saying how stupid that PC term is. He shows a photo of a black man in a suit and says that if you infered the man was African American, you would be wrong as he was British. Coincidence?
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=your_stupid_ideas
Maybe Doc Hammer and / or Jackson Public are fans of Maddox?
PS: I'm not looking to start a debate on this subject here, so please don't. This is not the place for it. I just wanted to point out a possible conection to one of my favorite shows and one of my favorite websites (besides this one of course). Nothing more! Sep. 2, 2006, 5:24pm

Jefferson Twilight new favorite character, well that is until the next eisode. I loved the mix of his character origins. The obvious one was Blade, but he's also a mix of Brother Voodoo. The hair and tooth necklace for his design are definitely Brother Voodoo.

I think David Bowie is a more likely influence, if any. Doc and Jackson have already demonstrated that they're big Bowie fans in The Incredible Mr. Brisby and Ghosts of the Sargasso.
Due to a childhood injury Bowie appears to have two different colored eyes. Originally, both eyes were blue but after the injury the iris of the left eye became permanantly dilated and changed color. The color seems to change depending on the lighting but often it appears green or brown. In some photos, the brown pupil looks almost red.
Also, one of his most famous acting roles was that of a vampire in the 80's horror movie, The Hunger. Then again, it might be as simple as Doc and Jackson thinking different colored eyes just looks cool. Sep. 6, 2006, 1:39am

this episode is a totally perfect example of why i love this show.
ludicruos situations with realistic reactions, and a weird sort of acceptance for they bizarre in the daily lives of the family.
also, love how james bond is a fictional character, when he's a lot more... plausible? then the venture family Sep. 3, 2006, 7:52pm

For all those worried about continuity, we only know that Baron von Underbehit went to the Monarch's door to beg for a place to stay. Monarch could have easily refused. Its also possible that Underbehit is in the Monarch layer, just in his own room. He probably wants no part in the Monarch's weird treatment of some whore.

Whoops, should of read the notes from "Love-Bheits" first.
From this very site, I quote:
"The ending of this brought up some speculation, but according to Jackson and Doc at Dragon-Con '06, it was just a throwaway gag and Ünderbheit and the Monarch will not be teaming up this season. Sorry, guys. The Monarch hates Ünderbheit anyway, so it's not like they'd get along very well."
So Monarch didn't let Underbheit in, thats why he wasn't around the cucoon. Sep. 4, 2006, 5:07am

Godmotherfuckingdamn. That's all I can say about this episode. This is probably....no fuck that, this IS my favorite episode of the Venture Bros. so far. This episode is 100x better than "Assassinanny 911" and "Victor.Echo.November." I loved that Blade character. I was wondering when they were going to have a bad-ass black character in this show. What I liked about him was that he didn't have the usual sterotypical behavior that black people usually have on White-created shows. Thank you Jackson and Doc. You just proved that black people don't have to be sterotypical to be funny in shows. Nice fucking work. Everything in this episode flowed perfectly. This is probably the ONLY episode where each and every scene had me dyin' from laughter. Both of the Monarch's heachmen, The Monarch, Hank and Dean, The order of the Triad, Max and Ward, Dr.Venture and his Walking Eye, everything was fucking great. They'll be hard pressed to try to top this episode. They went all out on it and that's what I loved about it. P.S. How the fuck can "Family Guy" still be getting more viewers than The Venture Bros.????Family Guy is a fucking insult to this show. It can't even hold a fucking candle to it. Some day people will open their eyes to this greatness and stop being fucking brainwashed by that low grade, poorly put together bullshit................

Has anyone else noticed the not so subtle push on the Dean/Triana angle lately? I have to wonder if this is actually going to go somewhere, or if they're just playing Dean's crush for all the comedy that it's worth... (watching him trying to do Lady Windemere's Fan was both hilarious and simultaneously sad)
In a way, though I know it's a total Shark Jumping problem, I hope they actually progress this, as this show has, unlike many of the properties that it parodies, been very much about developing characters in ludicrous situations in logical directions, such as the disintegration of The Monarch's and Dr. Girlfriend's relationship, the death (and resurection) of the Venture brothers, 21's slow burning ambitions of supervilliany, etc. This show obviously isn't afraid of straying from it's own status quo, and it would be interesting to see how they might handle something like Triana finally having to break the news to Dean that she just doesn't like him that way (because if we go with the 'logical reaction' model, there's no other possible scenario).
Actually, come to think of it, this might go well with the Main Arc of this season, which has seemed to be trying to 'grow up' Hank and Dean, seeing as every other episode has been them being forced to deal with ever more 'adult' situations, which has been much more entertaining than season 1 where they mostly just played the dimwitted foil to nearly every other character on the show...
This kind of depth is why I love this show, and it hasn't disappointed me, yet... Sep. 4, 2006, 5:17am

Come to think of it, I've also found that I rather enjoy Hank and Dean more when they're seperated, which, the more I think about it, was most of the reason why they're the most annoying part of season 1 for most people. Together, they're both rather stupid. Seperate, though, you actually get a better idea that, while they're both still kind of dim-witted, they each have they're gifts, and they're own individual brands of stupidity that makes them quite enjoyable to watch.
This is furthered even more by the individualized attention both characters are getting this season as opposed to Season 1 when everything just happened to both of them (the boys are kidnapped by The Monarch--The boys are kidnapped by Brisby--The boys chase after Phantom Spaceman--The boys open a lemonade stand-- etc.) This season, often the boys are seperated, and the characters treat them as individuals instead of just 'the Venture boys' (Dr. Venture taking Dean along to get his 'speed suit--Hank getting a patricidal crush on Molotov Cocktease--Dean getting forced into that creepy marriage with Underbheit--Hank and his Batman fetish)

You and I both, I know exactly what you mean. I hated the fact that they never developed their own character traits in the 1st season and that they were always together. That's why all the best episodes of The Venture Bros. are the ones where the boys play a prominent role in them.

And for all you fans of meaningless minutiae - if you look real close at the 'Second Class Arch' cards, it appears that number 21's (or is he number 24?) name is 'Jack Cutter', and number 24 (or is he number 21?) is 'Corky' something - his last name is much longer and I couldn't make it out. But it certainly did look like 'Corky'!

This episode was friggin great! Tons of small fun that I noticed that made it a blast to watch. So it seems that Dr. O's TV remote has returned to the "Matereal Sphear" and his TV might no longer be stuck on Animal Planet. Also, it seems Molotov's Speach from "Assananny 911" got Dr. Venture to let Brock smoke in the lab. Oh, hey, Looks like Dr.O. does have friends! Also, I think this is the first appearance of a black character that's a good guy. We got to see someone that I think was Truckulese and we saw "Lady Au Pare" whose costume was really un-sinister by the way. who knew Dr. O. owns his own island? The plug-Faced guy was back. Gak stains, Movie refrences, Family Double Dare, Dana Snyder as "The Alchemist". Jefferson Twilight seemed to also fight French Blaculus not just American And British. Even though the Christmas special suggested that the Ventures Were Christian with there Manger Scene traditions and everything, Could You Actually see Hank and Dean reading Bible stories? Or even better, Dr. Venture reading the stories to them? The Ghost guy from "Tag Sale, Your It" was back, Until now I was never sure if he was a villan or some sort of spector created by Dr. Orpheus to screw with The Monarch. James Bond, the walking eye from the intro, Brock has an Herb Garden? I'm sure the list goes on. I'll have to watch it again.

Overall a very enjoyable episode, though I wish they done more to solve the whole Triana kidnapping thing. Not only did the solution feel completely tacked-on, it makes no sense. Why would Torrid take Triana to Orpheus' island? And why would a man who owns his own island rent an apartment from Dr. Venture? And how did Triana write that note on the mirror, she was teleported/burned/whatever and didn't have an opportunity? Granted, the show opporates in a an utterlt fantastic and often incoherent world, but there is generally some logic (even if stupid/insane) to the characters' actions that I I just thought was lacking in this case.
I know that reads like rank entitled-fanboy jackassery, but oh well. I criticize because I care. Sep. 4, 2006, 9:44am

As for why Dr. Orpheus would live at the Venture Compund, I'm guessing that with the Venture name being so recognized in the world of Super Scientist/Hero/Archvillian/Costumed Agression, that Dr. O simply wanted to be near such a recognizalbe figure, therefore upping his chances of getting in on the action.

No, it doesn't have to make sense. Not rea-world sense, at least. But the show has created a universe for itself, a framework of rules within which the characters opporate in a logical[ish] manner. The whole kidnapping thing just brakes the framework for a quick laugh and easy solution. In a way, I'd perfer that the kidnapping be left unsolved (like Brock and boys' escape in 'Escape to the House of Mummies') than have it "cleaned up" in such a problematic fashion.
Anyway, I think the reason Orpheus doesn't just live on his island is because he is divoriced and (presumably) his ex-wife has some kind of relationship with Triana, and Triana needs to go to school (something probably not available on a privatel owned island in the Great Barrier Reef). I wouldn't accuse you of jack-assery (thanks to VB that has become one of my favorite new words!) because I was wondering the exact same thing. It's hard to quibble when everything else about the episode is so good.
There is one thing that made me wonder, though. Jefferson mentions Dr. Orpheus having a secret identity.
WHAT secret identity? He goes around introducing himself to everyone as Doctor Byron Orpheus. Even if "Doctor Orpheus" is his superhero name, it doesn't really hide his identity, does it?
Either Byron Orpheus is a fake name (which I DOUBT), or he used some name other than "Doctor Orpheus" when he originally worked with the Order of the Triad and Jefferson just assumes he's still using it.
It seemed to serve no purpose but to set up a string of Aquaman jokes. Either way, it doesn't detract from what was an overall great episode. Sep. 6, 2006, 2:47am

Twilight was refering to Orpheus's home as his alternate identity. Orpheus is a father and has a rent and has basically an average life (I use the word "average" with Orpheus VERY lightly). Twilight probably is constantly in "fight mode," where as Orpheus can go from Hero to Daddy on a whim. Orpheus, Master of the Cosmos's secret identity is Orpheus, loving father and tenant.

It reminds me of an old '80s cartoon or an American dub of a Japanese cartoon that's been cut-and-pasted to pieces because somebody died and they couldn't show that on American TV, so they rewrote the script to make it sound like they just got hurt or something even though the character's mouth totally isn't moving, and because of that they have to take out the original ending so they don't really have any means of tying up the loose strings, but whatever. So for the nostalgic value, yeah, I agree it probably works better unresolved. Plus, why change the formula now?
But still. . . . It's maddening! Sep. 6, 2006, 8:29am

Alrighty, obviously fans of the Venture Bros are obviously smarter then the average fellow.
So, I have a queery. Does anyone know of a proxy that will trick adult swim into thinking i'm coming from the states?
At home, it was fine as we had wireless internet that went through the states, but i just moved into my university residence, and the ip tells the site i'm from Canada.
Any suggestions? Sep. 4, 2006, 9:27pm

I don't know if this will work for you and I don't feel comfortable recommending this type of program, but I have used it to view AS Fix stuff and after it loads the page the streaming media seems to play very well.
The program is Torpark here's the Wiki link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpark
If you use this program, you do it at your own risk, I accept NO responsibility (that's why I gave you the Wikipedia link), you decide if its right for you...
I can tell you that I've used it with no apparent problems, it's just slow at establishing the initial connection (of course you still need a fast connection to view the clips)
I hope this helps our fellow VB fans in the GWN (or anywhere else in the ether) No one should be without!

This episode is great. I think it came after Assinanny because if you watch it again you'll notice that Hank's posters are already back on the wall as Molotov is driving away.
I would also like to address the ongoing struggle as to why Brock works for the Ventures and if Hank is actually his. Brock is assigned to Dr. Rusty because he has intimate knowledge of EVERYTHING Dr. Jonas was ever involved in. Much of his work was top secret government/military related so you have to infer that Rusty "knows" a lot of info nobody wants in the hands of the Guild or any other baddies. There is only one way Hank can be Brock's son/clone. In Assinanny, we learned that Brock doesn't know his father. In Dia los Dangerous, Dr. Rusty took a kidney from both Dean and Hank. If Hank is Brock's then the only feasible answer is that Brock is Dr. Jonas Venture's bastard son. Dr. Jonas' wife died after childbirth or something right? Anyway, Rusty never has any flashbacks of his mother and Dr. J was a sexy looking dude. Discuss Sep. 4, 2006, 11:27pm
