I liked this episode, quite a bit. It hasn't got as many laugh-riots per square inch as assassinanny or VEN, but a killer story and great writing. Things I liked:
-Venture's version of "the talk".
-Yet another piece of flying equipment stolen from Sgt Hatred. That dude's going to be pissed at the Monarch.
-Jefferson's asking the alchemist if he was still gay, and the reply, made me think of a similar scene in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". Both scenes make me giggle. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and plug that film here. It's got a shitty name, but it makes me think of VB, in that it's a good concept wrapped in great writing and dialogue.
-Also thrilling is that the show is actually going to have a black character. Even though he is a bit 70's stereotypical, it's OK because it's pretty much his costume, and two katanas makes him a badass. What's with his strange speach patterns though? And what's with 2 wizards and a warrior? The third one's supposed to be like, an archer or something.
-Deeper. Deeper. DEEPER.
-The Monarch making a sinister Monarch speach while crawling across his bed in a pink bathrobe.
-The following Red Dragon moment. My only issue is that it was perhaps a bit too obvious a rip, and I finished reading that book YESTERDAY, so it's also kinda spooky.
-I imagine Torrid as being played by Jasan Statham when they finally remake all the episodes as live-action movies with all-star casts.
-Blaculas. This COULD count toward the "names as nouns" list, but it's understandable in this case because Jefferson couldn't find a better descriptive name.
-Also spooky, I was replaying Max Payne 2 earlier today, and one of the shows blaring on TVs is "Lords and Ladies". I don't know what specific play Dean was performing, but they are both clearly riffing on the same thing. And Brock did a lovely job.
-Pretty much everything having to do with the Walking Eye. Also, all of Rusty's animation in the wash scene was really well done and expressive. Someone took a long time to get that just right... and I weep for them.
-I think we can all agree that as long as Dr. Girlfriend continues to come up with short-skirted costumes, we will have an easier time ignoring the voice.
-Somewhere along the line Hank became hugely funny, and I approve.
-The image of 24 spinning around with jetpacks on either side of his torso was downright cute. It does trouble me that the 21/24 plot point, while good for laughs, didn't really seem to be going anywhere. But it's an excuse for lots of the clever 1-on-1 conversations I love VB for, so it can stay.
-The snake eye icon thing is ultra-classy, and I like that unlike the Venture effect, which lights them from behind, this one comes out in front... and can be seen from the back.
Also, I can't quite figure out where this episode fits in the grand scheme of things. It's after VEN because Dr. Girlfriend is on her own, but before Love-Bheits because Underbheit and the Monarch arn't roomies. I'd love to see a difinitive ordered list at some point.
I'm seeing a problem of sorts arising from this show's character list and writing. Hank and 21/24 say so many funny things, they can now join the list (Brock, The Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Dr. Orpheus, Mr. White and Billy Quizboy) of characters it's seemingly impossible to get enough of. You can only fit so much awesome in 22 minutes of airtime, so by season 3 I suspect the opening music/montage is going to be the Venture Brothers Skull flashed for approximately 2 milliseconds.
