Powerless in the Face of Death Discussion
I'm going to try this out for this episode to see how sucessful it is (I'm going to guess 'not very'), but in the comments of this update you can say whatever you want about Powerless in the Face of Death. You don't have to spoiler anything (putting text between o[ and ]o will make it a spoiler), so be warned IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE EPISODE YET DON'T ENTER THE COMMENTS. I updated the capsule page, though I won't have the capsule and notes up until next week sometime (hopefully sooner than later). It does have a partial cast list, but nothing really spoilerish, but you may want to steer clear if you're testy about spoilers anyway.
I won't say anything about the episode more than I thought it was all kinds of awesome.

~WARNING: SPOILER-TASTIC!!~
I absolutely loved it. Perfect return to a show that I haven't seen anything new of in a year. For the past week I've been re-watching the first season DVDs pretty much non-stop, so going straight from Return to Spider-Skull Island into this was really rewarding.
Let's see...notes:
~Doc Venture once again proves himself to be the most horrible person alive (firing his equivilant of Haji, trying to avoid living with the boys again, etc). And yet, he's awesome? Why is this?
~Dr. O *rocks*. Seriously, he may well be my favorite character. I loved his guilt-tripping, and his journey to Hades...in fact it would've been kinda cool to see him bring the boys back from hell. "Phile! Necrophile!"
~Speaking of which, I wonder how he's going to react to the boys now. Oh man, I wonder how *Triana's* going to react to the boys now! That reunion will probably involve tears...not of joy.
~YES! FREE MONARCH!
~Loved, loved, loved the Venture Bros. death montage. Probably my favorite part of the episode.
~So the clone theory proves correct-- at least partly so, anyway. We still didn't really solve the "boy's mother/test tube" riddle (since evidently they just make clones every time the boys die), but I'm actually glad of that-- it leaves more up in the air for later this season (mwa-ha-ha-ha!) I do have to wonder though, does this mean the boys will never grow up? Like, do the clones age like normal people would? Is it like living except with little death speed-bumps which you have to go over every few miles or so? Or are they just going to stay the same forever at 16 (or however old there are)? I kind of hope it's not option B-- while I realize they're funny as they are now, the concept of them not even having the opprotunity to develop *physically* is just sad. Man, you have got to feel for the twins Venture at least a little bit.

haha yes, in the beginning Doc Venture wandering around looking like he was trying to find himself was hilarious (I said to myself a few times "huh. I guess they're really dead.", especially the special opening, which was great) and then it turned out he was just trying to avoid going back to his old life.

Great start for a new season. The beginning was sweet, and there were plenty of laughs. I'll tune in again on Sunday to get the full experience. You can only judge so much about the artwork from a stream on my crappy 15" CRT.
Who is doing Jonas Venture Jr's voice now? It sounded different, especially since I watched the last ep. of season one before watching this.

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. Don't get me wrong it had a lot of funny parts- but I was totally hoping for some cool season-spanning adventure that would eventually bring the boys back. And while seeing the boys die over and over was pretty awesome, in my mind it rings too much of Kenny from South Park. I hope the boys don't die again anytime soon...

I'm glad someone else agrees. And you're right- perhaps what was really bothering me was the way that it basically "doesn't matter" if the boys die because they can just be cloned again. Figuring out what over-the-top way Brock is going to save them seems kind of meaningless now.

Hm, I dunno... I'm withholding judgment until the next episode or perhaps the one after it, whenever we get to see the new-and-not-really-improved clones. Somehow I don't think that Doc and Brock's explanation is the 100% concrete nail in this particular coffin (wow, I just combined like three affirmative-implying analogies).

I liked how they did it because if you think of it like Johnny Quest... yeah he should have died a lot I mean damn. So the fact that it's done in such a way that it's not really a big deal makes it more... realistic(I know nothing bout the show is, but you catch my drift i hope)

I'd also like to think that the whole reason Brock saves the boys in over the top manners is to avoid having to deal with the whole clone growing process- since the fact that they feel like big Stretch Armstrongs creeps him out.
It's probably less hassle to save them, and killing someone in the process is gravy.

Well, they are still living humans, so it's not like he's going to go "oh well screw them I'll go bang some chicks instead"... the cloning thing seems more like a backup because they seem to die so much. a lot of their deaths didn't come from a mission/adventure Brock and Doc were on, but rather the boys being stupid like standing next to the X-1 when it was takin off or running with scissors or jumping off the roof of the compound.
Also I doubt it'll become a gimmick for them to die. Jackson has said that when he originally came up with the show he wanted them to die every episode, but then South Park came along and did the same thing, so he had to scrap the idea. They might die at the end of each season (that's speculation on my part), but it won't quite carry the same weight it did at the end of season one of course.

Well, the original idea for the show was to have the boys die in almost every episode as a parody to all those Hardy Boys adventures where doing something like following a criminal around would get you killed. There were several years between the conception of the show and its actual birth and they scrapped the recurring deaths idea when South Park started.

I totally agree. I loved how it was done by the end of season 1. I wouldn't want to change it. I mean, I love the humor of the show, but in this episode Dr. Orpheus looks different, Jonas Venture has a different voice & I swear the group guy had the same voice as the guy who tested Brock for his liscence. Well anywho, the episode also seemed darker - color I mean. Well, I guess the storyline too. Even though I've already watched it, I'm gonna' watch it again on Sunday too. Still can't get enough Venture Bros.

I really liked every thing about the episode. Looked like from the 2 seconds we saw her Dr. Girlfriend went under a little character redesign. I noticed her hair looked a tad different. The Monarch/Phantom Limb plot seems to be the most promising for this season. And it's hard to hate Phantom Limb as much as I love the Monarch, only because of the way he said Tarzapan.
As for the boy's explanation I thought it was well done. They showed us all the possibilities and the clones were definitely the best choice. So what if it was expected, does it make a difference? They did a damn good job with it.
"The other is Hank, he is toe-headed" was my favorite line from the whole episode. Brilliant!

There were people talking about how they were disappointed that the Venture Brothers are clones and it could turn out to be like Kenny ala South Park but there was an interview with Jackson Publick and how the thought up Venture Bros. before south park and he wanted the boys to die and come back every episode but then south park hit the scene and he scraped that idea so HE THOUGHT OF IT FIRST

That's true, I even believe that I read that article, however, I still think it would be stupid for the boys to keep dying. The Venture Brothers is an awesome show and does not need a gimmick to be funny, and besides even if they decided to make it a reoccuring theme, introducing it in the second season rather than at the begining of the series would be pretty dumb. But that's just my opinion.

Yep. That's the thing: It doesn't matter who came up with the concept first, I was just worried that it would become a running joke NOW. I really like the show the way it is and I was just expressing a worry that it would change the dynamic of the way everyone interacts with each other. Either way, it's a great show. No doubt.

Well, they certainly can't use the whole "they're dead... or ARE THEY" thing as a cliffhanger anymore.
I'm actually hoping their incubation lasts a couple of episodes- the clone slugs have some comedy potential, and the whole Jonas Venture thing needs to be explored a little more- I mean, he's turned into quite the ladies' man, for a parasitic twin and all.

I love King Gorilla. I think he was the best new character in this first episode. Maybe I was hearing things, but KG is in jail for sodomizing Vince Neil in the surreal life, right? I Phantom Limb mentioned it when he visited KG in jail. It took me a couple of viewings to catch it.

Happy birthday to me!!!! I cannot believe the Venture Bros. died 14 goddamn times!!!!! Damn that makes me look at season 1 way different. I'm just glad to at least see them in flashbacks. Why is it that brock and Doc never die on any of their adventures. My respect for Dr. Orpheus and gone way up. He is a really good person. He and Triana seem to be the only ones who actually cared that they died. Brock and Dr. Venture were fucking laughing at one time. My respect for Dr. Venture has gone way down. I'm not saying Hammer and Publick have ruined the show, but he doesn't even seem to really care that they died. He even said screw the boys in the beginning. I guess I can understand having 14 copies of them. But what really pisses me off is the fact that when Dr. Venture thought Brock was dead in Dia de los Dangerous! he had a fucking nervous breakdown and shit. He was crying and shit, making shirnes, calling Brock his "beautiful guardian angel" and having his own goddamn funeral. Man Dr. Venture is an asshole. Dr. Orpheus is my favorite character now. He has a good heart. It may sound strange coming from me, the man who types comments of rage and fustration but I really respect that he showed some sort of mourning when they died. Dr. Venture went off and partied for fucks sake!! I hope they bring them back in this season. What I would like to see is Dr. Venture or Brock die and see what happens. I had a feeling they were clones. Selfish bastard. The scenes with The Monarch were absolutely hilarious. King Gorilla was the only one who had his back. I guess Doc's right side wandered out and found it's way to that prison. This season looks to be even greater than the 1st. I don't think I can watch my DVD anymore. I want to see more new episodes. I still cannot believe they died 14 times though. I will admit that the fact they have been cloned so many times takes away from "Return to Spider Skull Island". I now know why he said "Alright get their clothes." It made it seem like that was their first time dying. I can't wait

Dr. Venture was most likely on drugs at the time he said that line about not caring, most likely ecstasy. Coupled with the fact that they've had to resurrect them 13 previous times would indicate that they're not entirely worried about their death simply because they know they can just bring them back.
And the only "they" that cut your comment off is whatever submission system restriction there is on database insertion. Try keeping your comments to just that, comments, and not writing a freakin' article.

But everyone always knew Hank and Dean weren't normal. That provided half of the comedy of the first season. Episode One involved organ harvesting of Hank and Dean for the comfort ( not survival ) of Dr. Venture. He only needed one kidney. Dr. Venture just knew that eventually they would get killed, and he would have to clone them again. The whole humor of the show is what if the Hardy Boys/Comic book universe where inhabited by heroes who weren't that heroic ( Dr. Venture is a selfish and wormy, Brock is a borderline psychopath ) and the villians are sometimes more kind and sympathetic than the heros ( The Monarch feels sorry for Dr. Venture once he gets into the Venture compound and apologizes for the Hank and Dean hit to Hank and Dean ). In "The Tick", the heros were simply morons and the villians also morons. In this show, the reversal is complete ,which makes it funny. The heros are somewhat villainous ( Dr. Venture will do anything for a buck ) and the villians are well almost normal people ( hence the soap operish moments between the monarch and dr. girlfriend ). Stop overanalyzing and ENJOY IT!

By the way, does anyone think that the music was mixed in too loud for this episode? I couldn't understand anything anyone said during the "jailbreak" scene.
I think that this episode's problem was that it HAD to reveal that Hank and Dean were clones, no matter what it did, and while I suppose this is a suitably ironic idea on paper, there's not really much you can do to make it funny on screen. I suppose the way they handled it (with Dr. Venture treating the whole thing as a sarcastic practical joke on Dr. Orpheus) was for the best. The parts of the episode that DIDN'T involve the clones were still hilarious though! Dr. Orpheus is now officially the most kickass character on the show, by the way.

First of all, the episode felt REALLY rushed. Like they were trying to jam in WAY too much information into one episode. I did enjoy much of it, but on the whole, I have to admit, I was a little disappointed. My disappointment began with the new opening. It was very brief, and I didn't like the fact that Dr. O is now a featured character in the opening. I feel like this was marketing schtick, pure and simple (and don't get me wrong, Orpheus is my favorite character by a long shot, but I feel like the show is bowing to pressure by including him in the opening because he can be marketed. The theme is not something I was happy to see trifled with and shortened.
I had to re-watch it a second time just to catch everything and again, it felt like they tried to pack too much in and cut the themesong and the out-tro to compensate (out-tro was different too, I might add, and not for the better).
It did definitely look different this time around as far as colors go, and I know they are doing more with the background which could account for this. I don't think you have to worry about the opening. The opening was just for this episode, as a joke to imply that the Docs Venture were the NEW Venture Brothers. I'm pretty sure it will go back to normal, now that the kids are back, and it seems that Jonas will be a "guest star" character like Pete White from now on. I, too, am a huge fan of the Season 1 opening, I love that piano-ey "googa gaggedy GOOGA de GAGGEDY GOOGA DE GAGGEDY!!!" noise in the collage part!!

Reynolds, I felt the exact same way. It seemed too eager to shout 'it is a new season, look at all the character development that will make this season great'. I was a fan of the allusions, the slow introduction and maturation of characters in the last season. Not to judge things early...I really did enjoy it, but it just didn't have the spark that made almost every episode in season 1 so enjoyable. Shows should change with time, revelations should transpire, but pacing really is key. I would have enjoyed the episode a bit more if there had been a little more filler, to be honest.
Personally, I hope something happens in next few episodes that brings back the dynamics shared by the Venture family in season 1, such as the destruction of the means to create more clones of the boys. I don't think this will happen, since it is clear that the whole clone idea was planned from the first season (remember when the boys said that their dad never negotiated with terrorists for their lives in The Incredible Mr. Brisby? Yeah, it makes sense now..), but I can hope. I realize overanalyzing is the devil, but sometimes you just can't help it. I don't want to be nonchalant about whether the boys live or die.

The episode did contain a lot of story lines, but I thought the show was well paced overall. There weren't any last second wrap ups that I noticed. That much information means you probably have to watch the ep. more than once, but I pretty much do that anyways.
We'll have to wait for this week's episode to find out what the real opening for this season will be, but if Dr.O is in it, I'm not bothered by it. H.E.L.P.eR. was featured in the opening as well.

The episode explained a few things I had certain thoughts on. The clone concept was easy to figure out, but the actual details once revealed were hilarious and somewhat morbid.
Dr. Orpheus is probably the only sympathetic (albeit overly dramatic)character in the show.
The death montage was a riot, especially the gas leak joke.
The episode did for me what a white castle hamburger does: Make me hungry for more.

Orpheus and Triana. The Orpheus family just seem to be actually good people... perfect, then, that they live next door to good ol' Rusty. Seriously, this episode rocked Orpheus to the slot of my favorite character; I loved him before for his infamously dramatic monologues, but he's also easily the character that I sympathize with most. I love right after the Venture Death Montage when Brock and Rusty are laughing about hairplugs and Orpheus just has this completed horrified expression on his face. Frankly, I think that even if he had known about the clones he would've still felt the same level of guilt about killing them. Poor Dr. O... My god, I can't wait until Friday.

I used to get sad when I saw the ending for "Return to spider skull Island". I thought their deaths had some meaning to the show. But their deaths were more of a inconvenice than a tragedy. That song at the end of the episode should go something like this now.......
"Two angels are plucked from the heavenly sky

I just read this off of Jackson Publick's blog in the "comments" section and this made me feel so much better about my concerns (I copied it from the site, hope that's cool) :
"Points taken, but I submit that the deaths of two walking, talking, pie-eyed sixteen year old boys--regardless of their genesis--is a horrifying thing to behold, and something to be avoided at all costs. Hence Brock will always defend them unto death--because they ARE alive, they ARE his responsibility, and Brock IS dedicated to his mission (and has warmed up to them over the years). A conundrum? Sure, somewhat. But no more illogical than the way everyone else in the Venture world dutifully go about their appointed roles (supervillains hassle scientists, scientists invent stuff, henchmen obey supervillains, etc.), which is to say that it's completely illogical but thems the rules of the game. Brock is most certainly wounded by the boys' deaths each and every time they die. He probably beats himself up for a while. But, being a realist, he moves on and tries again (if you're trying to quit smoking and you cave in to cravings and have one, is it better to give up and start smoking again, or to curse yourself and renew your commitment?) His and Doc's shared, somewhat lighthearted reminiscences about the boys' previous deaths is probably a sort of "gallows humor" coping device. The man is, after all, a professional assassin.
As for Doc needing to "find himself" after the boys' deaths, well...he didn't. That's just a bullshit line he probably fed everyone who was trying to hold him back from his globe-spanning trip. The reality is that Doc is way more selfish than that. Though he knows he has to play by the superscientist rules and revivify the boys, just as he's done for years, he is not-so-secretly relieved every time he's able to get off the hook of being a father for even a month. Then it's back to business as usual.
Trust me, by the third episode or so all of this death of the boys stuff will be behind you and you can safely enjoy t

We are witnessing these characters in their "dirty little secret" mode in this premiere episode--we're seeing them at their ugliest, behind closed doors. Their world has rebooted, they will press on as always, and even you, the viewer, will put it all in the back of your mind and enjoy them for who they are in the other 12 episodes, as you presumably did last season.
Don't worry...they're not gonna be a pair of Kennys. To quote Doc: "stop it, they are HANK and DEAN. They have all the same memories, same annoying tendencies, same everything."

As mentioned earlier the reference to the use of the teleporter and its malfunction relates back to "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum, which was a remake of the original "The Fly" with Vincent Price. However, I think there might also be a reference to the "Philadelphia Experiment", where the Navy was trying to make ships invisible. As the story goes the ship being experimented on disappeared from its dock and reappeared a few hundred miles away. When the ship had reappeared there were stories of crew members who were stuck half in and out of walls and decks...much like Rusty was half in and out of the wall.

I like the way they are carrying on with the whole "Necromancy is Evil" theme by having Dr. Orpheus use Mr. Dark's creepy hand illustrations from Something Wicked This Way Comes, particularly since Mr. Dark is one of the eviller necromancers in fiction. Between that and the fact that Dr. Orpheus uses the Necronomicon in place of the Bible it's kind of surprising that he's such a great family man and all around nice guy.

Here's another reference for you that I didn't see mentioned in the capsule. At the beginning of the episode Dr. Venture and Jonas are talking when Dr. Venture says "Look, Twiki, I have some beedy beedy beedy big government contracts I've gotta get cracking on. I'm beedy beedy back in action and there are beedy beedy beedy bills to pay." Twiki is the annoying robot sidekick of Buck Rogers in the 80s sci-fi TV show Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Twiki's signature was saying "beedy beedy beedy" before everything he said. Apparently that's what robots do in the 25th century. Twiki was voiced by voice acting legend Mel Blanc. in this eppisode (and I think somewere else('Past Tense'?)) it's mentioned that Dr.Venture didn't lose his virgenity till he was 24. in 'Return to Spider-Skull Island' Jonas said he was inutero 43 years ago, so that mean's he's about 42 (venture said he wasn't alive 43 years ago so I'm guessing he is a few months till his 43rd birthday). the brothers seem to be about 15-17ish, and they are twins.
takeing all this into acount, if you subtract 24 from 42 you get 18 years. now if every time the boys die Dr. Venture takes a month or two off, maybe the first time it took a lot longer for him to figure eveything out, that could easily add a year or two to the brother's ages.
so it seems to me that it is quite within the relm of posibility that Hank and Dean are the result of Dr.Venture's first time, and it's also quite posable that was the only time he's ever actualy gotten any.
