"The Venture Bros. and the Curse of the Hidden Problem" Discussion!
Amazing start with an unexpected crash ending on multiple story lines! So glad the best animated show ever put on television is back with new episodes. It's scare-a-Brock-spooky!
Thoughts:
1) Hank is awesome, but I didn't get the reference to why he was spooked while over at Sirena's place.
2) I know I missed Dr. Orpheus, but, wow was the Triad awesome in this episode.
3) So glad to see the tie-in to the old looming ending of Season 1 episode Careers in Science. We thought that ending was tied up when Gargantua-1 crashed to earth, but that crash never had the emotional weight that the music at the end of Careers in Science implied. Boy did this deliver!
4) Always love to watch Doc being dismissive to to anything annoying him. Typical Doc.
Off-topic: Very disappointed to see Venture Bros. is no longer on the nightly [as] schedule. This show deserves much more exposure; a new generation of [as] viewers can only fall in love with this show if regularly exposed to it.
Super Off-topic: Was binge-watching the series in preparation for the new season and couldn't remember where the extra intro-scene for The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together-Part 1 was hidden on the DVDs. Hopefully my fellow Venture Bros. fanboys can help me find it. Aug. 5, 2018, 11:47pm

off topic: interesting tidbit from the Art of Venture Bros book that went on sale.
General Manhowers the guy in the government Rusty is always trying to sell stuff too was a member of the Boys Brigade with Phantom Limb and Professor Impossible. He's the Ben Grimm looking guy with the V on his shirt. This comes from the entry for Now Museum - Now You Don't.
(I always thought the guy with the V on his shirt was going to turn out to be Sgt. Hatred) Aug. 9, 2018, 8:20pm

The big reveal at the end of this episode blew me away.
I really like how Helper is looking at the PROBLEM light in "Party for Tarzan" for one quick shot near the end of that episode. Great foreshadowing.
I never thought they'd actually bring THAT character back from the dead.

I personally doubt Kano was responsible for that. He said he killed 'a great man' and got silent when Brock asked him if he killed Jonas Sr. but they never confirmed that he did it. My guess is that Jonas Sr. was in the same plane crash that killed the original Blue Morpho. If Kano really was responsible for that, he wasn't always such a crackerjack pilot.
Aug. 6, 2018, 8:59pm
Kano did get silent and looked away as if he was ashamed of who he killed, which I do believe is Jonas Venture Sr. Of all the Orb related stories, we know that Brock backed off from killing Rusty over it, Sandow broke the Orb instead of breaking Colonel Venture's neck, but as for Kano and Jonas....I do believe he did it.
As for the Blue Morpho, due to events that take place in episode 2 of the new season I cannot comment without bringing up some spoilers....so that discussion will need to wait until it airs or probably after everything gets wrapped up in episode 3.
Still, I am curious as to how Jonas was killed that all that remained of him was his head. Aug. 7, 2018, 7:01am

I have to rewatch the episode to be sure, but I don't think the song itself "woke" Jonas or set anything off; rather, I took it to simply be part of the haunting. If the movie/song was playing at his time of death, it makes sense that if he wanted to communicate with his family/Team Venture, he'd use methods with an obvious associative impact (and indeed, as soon as Billy mentioned "Street Life," Col. Gentleman and Action Man knew exactly what was happening).
That said, I can't actually remember what, if anything, triggered Jonas/PROBLEM to become active again, so maybe I'm way off. Aug. 7, 2018, 9:26am

That's a good question. We still don't have a complete picture of who exactly was there and what precisely happened on Gargantua 1, but I have a feeling we're going to be getting some questions answered in S7E03. I have a hunch that members of the original Team Venture were all there, for reasons yet to be revealed.
If not, then another possible way to explain it is that, since whatever happened on movie night became something of a notorious incident --- within Rusty's social circle, anyway --- they could still know enough details to put two and two together. But I think some bombshells are gonna be dropped in episode 3 of this season. Aug. 7, 2018, 10:34pm

Very nice. Glad to see so many of my favorites return, especially the original Team Venture. They make everything better. Don't know if Hank's plan will work or how Wide Wale managed to capture whoever that it is (I'm doubting it's Monarch for some reason). I'd love to find out more about Chief Justice but that one's a long shot. As for the big reveal, I'm more interested in seeing how it happened than how it'll be resolved but knowing Jackson and Doc, I doubt we'll get too much into it.
Sucks that I couldn't watch the TV premiere (Comcast still hasn't given CN back). Anybody who watched it on TV, did Jackson and Doc have witty repartee during the commercials? They usually do during premieres. Aug. 6, 2018, 2:30am

Yeah nothing at all except the new episode and regular ads. I recorded it but I'm on the 8th view so I think I can definitively say [adult swim] did not have premiere specific bumps. I was mad I didn't even see any "New Venture Bros.' coming up" bumps other than the trailer ads they had been showing for a while..

Further confirmation of the location of the origianl venture compound:
The Order of the Triad has been staying at "The Rancho Feo (ugly ranch) Motor Hotel", which Doc identifies as "That shit-hole out on I-25"
Back in "Venture Libre" HELPeR was spotted hauling ass down Highway 285 (see capsule on this site). The two highways meet in in Denver and Santa Fe, so it would make sense that the old venture place is somewhere between the two cities.
We will ignore the fact that they seem to have driven the Blood Vessel (good name) to New York in a very short time. Dean clearly called Orpheus first thing. Aug. 6, 2018, 12:54pm

Good call-back to "Escape to the House of Mummies Part II" where we found out Rusty's great-grandfather was a milliner. "The Great Venture Millery Fire of 19-aught-7" probably also means the great-great-grandpa was a miserly industrialist type. The scrap bin catching on fire is probably a reference to the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, though that was not started by a zeppelin.

(I'm sorry you smell like spoiled fruit) Phantomas has a point. (How dare you, sir! I smell of freshly cut flowers.) Not that. Look, all of us have devoted our lives to perfect and protect the ORB, but we're losing everything. I can't even afford another suit. Same suit for the last five years. I've long held the theory that Jonas didn't really die. I guess I was semi right.
*Episode 2 SPOILER* - When we learn that Red Death and some other guild members had infiltrated the crew of Gargantua 1 and were present at "Movie Night" to kidnap Jonas I'm betting it was Jonas who opened the cargo bay doors, because he'd totally let his own guys die to save his skin. I'm on my sixth view, some notes:
Colonel Gentleman says: Rusty, that's your pop-pop.
Which has before been used to mean grandpa (when he talks to Hank and Dean) so is Rusty really his son? or an early Hank/Dean prototype?
When Dr.V.Sr. talks it sounds like he did in Careers in Science. Were Rusty's hallucinations after he hit his head actually telepathic conversations with his dad trapped in the Progressive Biological Life Extension Module?
H.E.L.P.eR. once again at the center of the Phantom Spaceman although they didn't reference PS this time. And spewing rats!
Obvious Indiana Jones reference at the begining. (I think? been awhile since I saw it, could definitely be another movie, goggle is very unhelpful at the moment anyone know what the opening reference is? The Mummy? Stargate? That one Futurama episode?). Just glad we get to see Swifty and JJ and Hector again. (I used to be pretty)
The Careers in Science throwbacks were great. Sharky's Machine! Thaddeus gets the Rusty Venture show over and over. Even Brock seems to break (HELPeR bringing him more coffee in the morning is awesome).
Did we know how Sirena was spelled before? Or is it misspelled here?
When Pete White talks about different programing languages, almost everything shown on-screen is COBOL (I think, sixth look indicates ASM and other stuff too) which he doesn't mention. "A digital patois".
"What about that Blue Morpho character?", Billy: "I think we can rule him out" --- Billy still thinks Rusty is the BM.
Professor Pete's Patented Pink Pilgrim Cyber-Snooper, We'll root him out and shut him down.
Vincenzo's is a great scene, but the red shirt and pizza delivery? Is this a Futurama homage? Aug. 6, 2018, 9:47pm

That Uber driver backs up out of the building at the end, but he's in the drivers seat which means he was the one to make the crazy smash through the wall entrance with original Team Venture.

So: Blood Vessel as in the blood vessels in a human body (vampire reference) and also vessel like a car or boat or whatever, transport/conveyance
Clara-tin discussion? someone with more knowledge should explain this.
How did Wide Whale get the Blue Morpho/Monarch? is this some decoy Hank master-plan?
Dr. Venture still hates the Magic explanation, like Escape From the House of Mummies, Part II.
Home is possessed. Like Dr. V was in Assisted Suicide.
Hank's pizza is a Trojan Horse, see: later they eat it and are shown collapsed on the group. I think he put a roofie in the pizza. Aug. 6, 2018, 10:12pm

Question about O.R.B.
So, when Brock is asking his car about Orders Regarding Bodyguard (aka ORB aka Operation Rusty's Blanket) he asks about the termination clause and then gives his ID number Two Delta Nine Romeo Tango Eight, then the car tries to kill him "Agent. Samson. Brock. Terminated." Did he put out the hit on himself? Aug. 6, 2018, 10:53pm

Claritin-D, like a lot of "daytime" drugs, has pseudoephedrine in it as a "wakefullness-promoting agent" to counteract the drowsiness caused by the active ingredient. A lot of people find the effect uncomfortable, jittery or even paranoid. Jefferson succinctly says he gets the Jimjams.
Notably, Jefferson also had the Heebee-Jeebee's in "What Goes Down Must Come Up", though that was an unrelated result of being skylarked into a mares nest. Aug. 7, 2018, 1:58am

Also, Sirenia is a scientific name for sea cows, including manatees and dugongs. Supposedly comes from sailors mistaking them for mermaids, so it all goes back to the same place. The Ong brothers do love their marine biology.
I kept thinking that Sirena could breath water, but she must just be able to hold her breath for a long time like all the other "gentle aquatic mammals".
Here's a pitch: Dolphins and such can hold their breath for so long in part because they're brain and other organs can enter a sort of low oxygen mode, kinda like low power mode on your phone. Now in "It Happening One Night" Sirena held Hank underwater with a kiss, and we figured she was breathing for him, like mermaids do in a bunch of other movies. Maybe she hypnotized him into a relaxed state so he could stay under for longer. It would go with the whole siren thing, and an attractive lady that hynotizes people is classic cartoon and comic stuff. She could call herself Sirenia and have some sort of sexy sea cow outfit.
"That's classic comic stuff! You're like captain- you're all... Aquaman!" Aug. 7, 2018, 12:35pm

On my 5th (or 6th viewing, I lost track) I noticed that when Billy entered Col. Gentleman's apartment you can see the Jade Dragon (or an approximation thereof) on the end table to the left of the couch. This was last seen being acquired by the Blue Morpho from Dr. Z in 'A Party for Tarzan'.

I'm not surprised, and it was expected... but damn, the ratings for the S7 premiere are not exactly great.
Top 50 Cable Telecasts:
#15 - Venture Bros. S7 Premiere - 0.660 viewers per million.
I understand things are going all streaming, early online release, lack of promotion, lack of reruns, blah blah blah. I just mean that number seems bad when you look at R&M getting 2.5 million viewers. Aug. 7, 2018, 8:14pm

Dang. I don't understand the number of people whom (I think it's whom because of the "to" coming up but I don't know) when I talk to them about Venture Bros. has either never heard of it or is like meh, when the Venture Brothers to me is proof that God exists and that he loves me.
I think (hope) that [adult swim] has understood over the years that yes, VB doesn't get the greatest ratings but has a solid hardcore and that Quality improves their brand over all, also I think they might be fans themselves.
In other news, Since the PROBLEM light seems to correspond to Jonas being awake and it first came on in Careers in Science [1x02] (We're here. || So what's the problem? || The light went on. || Oh, that's helpful. || And... that's never happened before.) and crashed shortly thereafter in Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner? [2x09] I wonder if Jonas crashed Gargantua-1 to get back to Earth.
(I haven't seen episode 2 so if it's answered there I wouldn't know) Aug. 8, 2018, 7:18pm

I see Robot Chicken still averages one million viewers and it just finished its ninth season in July. Ultimately, the new AT&T overlords may not understand the low ratings, compare the show to mega-hit R&M, which is similar in many ways, and want V Bros. gone. According to the artbook, it costs well over one million to make two episodes. So, probably around 750k per episode. AT&T Turner Broadcasting may not want to keep paying for it going forward.
However, Mike Lazzo could potentially keep it going as long as he wants though.
Basically, I wouldn't be shocked if season eight of V Bros. is the final one.
or
Mike Lazzo could keep the show going into the 2020s.
Only time will tell. Aug. 8, 2018, 11:17pm

I'd be fine with season 8 being the final season (maybe a 9) IF they wrap it all up right. Not that Doc and JP would ever do this, but you don't want the show to keep trudging along past it's prime a la Simpsons, South Park or *gag* Family Guy.
Also, I would hope the execs would take digital sales into account. I pre order the seasons on Amazon and watch the eps on Mondays when I get home from work. A coworker of mine waits until the season is complete then buys it on iTunes or such and binge watches them all in one or two nights. Aug. 9, 2018, 6:54pm

Hey, if anyone is interested the VB wiki for this episode (and the site in general) could use some contributors, if you're into that sort of thing. I'm just so-so at it, but I've added some info here and there. I've put up some category headings and added the first two tidbits for 'Connections to Previous Episodes'. Feel free to add some updates of your own to help make it even more awesome! I know you guys are real good with spotting things and the cultural references and all.

The title animation for this season, of the boys making snow angels, could also be read as them making butterflies in the snow. I wonder if this presages the revelation that they are really the Blue Morpho's children, which would make them the Monarch's brothers.
Or, Rusty is the Monarch's brother (or half-brother) which would make Hank and Dean the Monarch's nephews.
I'm curious just how dead is Jonas. His brain was described as being in a coma. So could he come back? And wouldn't that be some fresh hell for Rusty. Aug. 9, 2018, 11:12pm

I think the mere fact that the show has entered season seven inspired Jackson and Doc to finally unleash some of the biggest revelations the entire series has seen.
It definitely felt that way towards the end of the season premiere.
I think we're all in for many, many more big reveals all season long. Aug. 10, 2018, 5:39pm
