Discussion: The Diving Bell Vs. The Butter-glider

It's that time of the year again! New episodes begin and this is the place to talk about them! For those of you not familiar, here's the drill: say whatever you want about the episode or the series, discuss, debate, have a good time! Be civil and polite and everything will be great. For those of you who aren't watching the episode or haven't seen it yet be warned that the comments will probably contain spoilers, so read at your own risk! Other than that have fun and enjoy!

And after you watch it feel free to rate it on the episode page.

Also the episode will be up on Adult Swim Video in a week (9/20). However if you can't wait you can purchase it on iTunes for $1.99 or subscribe to all of season four for $24.99.

Yup. Pretty danged good. The number of previous episode call-backs in this one was off the charts, and most of them were waaay back. King Gorilla, more clones, Doc's arm severance from V.E.N.-- and I can't believe they keep bringing back the shrink ray. Good stuff.

On that note, did anyone else notice that the wound from the pins mentioned from V.E.N. were on Doc's right side while it was the left arm that was reattached in V.E.N.? Don't know if it was on purpose for the joke or simply Jackson and Doc being forgetful

Yeah, I noticed that too, and was wondering why White questioned Billy on the placement of 'those pins' and Billy quickly changing the subject... perhaps there's more to it then just a simple continuity slip, could it have to do with disappearance of the "7's"?

In his original form? My guess is that is either a flashback to when Phantom Limb had both of his arms OR Phantom Limb has switched back to his old costume and preferred only having 1 arm rather than a visible prosthetic to keep with the phantom theme. (You'd never notice a missing arm on a guy with invisible arms!)

True, very true. And let me think for a second.... they've had the same bodys since "Hate Floats" and season 2 occured over a couple months, 3 occured over a couple months, so that's at least a year, and then 4 passed at least 6 months... yeah they would be old enough, I was wrong. But impossible being there is also a great thing.

It seemed too busy, and I didn't really enjoy the Butter-glider obsession. Had the Monarch just gotten bummed after seeing KG sick, cut out all the butter-glider scenes, and spent some more time on the Fantastic Voyage stuff and/or the henchmen dissatisfaction, I would've liked it more, I think.

Still a fine half hour of TV, but sub-par for the Venture Bros, IMO.

agreed, I may have had too high expectations for this one, but I thought it didn't live up to Pinstripes & Poltergeists. I also thought they'd take it from there: 21 & Brock vs. Monstroso and everything.

nifty episode, but too many minutes wasted with elaborate jokes that were a wee bit too predictable (like Billy & Pete's ride ...)

but hooray for season 4.2
I'm pumped

I don't blame you for being disappointed, but 21 and Brock's assault on Monstroso wasn't some big, dramatic game-changer. It was presented basically as 1) a joke, with 21 doing his Obi-Wan spiel, and 2) a bit of awesome fanservice, with these two unlikely characters fighting together. It was over at the end of Pinstripes & Poltergeists. It was just supposed to be fun!

Anyway, Monstroso will be back, probably with a few bones to pick, later in 4.2.

well, I rewatched it yesterday ... and liked it a lot better.
still have second thoughts about the motorcycle-sequence (yes, I get the point: it supposed to be a lengthy yet utterly useless scene ... but that's precious broadcasting time they were wasting there) and the song. still: I love are the refernces throughout the ep ... and I love seeing how animation got better and better each season ...

they could totally pull off a FUTURAMA-like season with like 3 or 4 full-length DVD releases or something ... I'd watch it. twice at least ...

The Butter-Glider stuff was hilarious! I'm usually not a fan of characters singing in the shows i watch. There's way too much of that going on these days and it's usually not funny. So I'm glad that Doc and Jackson don't often do it. It's tacky, especially in a show like this where people just typically wouldn't be singing. But this song that The Monarch sings to his Butter-Glider was perfect! I thought i was gonna piss tears i laughed so hard by the end of it. The fact that somewhere in his crazy brain he actually wanted to procreate with that machine is just too much funny! If you didn't think so, you need to remember that he's The Monarch. He's insane. Dr. Girlfriend accepts him for his madness, why can't you?

It's the scene where Marion is having a drinking contest with that huge fat lady in her bar in Nepal. The crowd around them starts to get rowdy when Marion looks like she's gonna pass out. Then she gets her sh*t together and yells "pistole" just like 21 and takes down the shot like a champ.

Over all, I liked it. I'm gonna have to see it again at least one more time for it all to register better in my brain. That was a lot o' plot. At least VB is back to 11:30 again. Wooo! I look at this episode so far as a bridge episode. As Jory points out, lotta call backs. Can't wait 'til the capsule to see if I caught them all. And as 'H' says, it looks like some arcs have been started that'll prolly go to the season end or beyond. And there's the continuation, of course, of other ongoing arcs, like 24. That certainly was a "crash" ending before the creds. Now I gotta go to work. That sucks as I am definately not like Mr. Monday.

Yes, I had the same issue. In my itunes account, it says that the season pass is "completed" and so the new episode didn't download even though it is listed with the rest of the fourth season... which is total bullshit. I paid 25 bucks for it and it clearly stated it was for the entire season. I wrote tech support but I doubt that will resolve anything. I can let you know if I hear anything.

Video's good for an iPod or iPhone but I wouldn't compare it to HD, it's 640x360.
I got an email back from Apple and this is what they said:

Hello Chris,

I understand that you purchased "The Venture Bros., Season 4". but haven't received the latest episode. I know how eager you must be to correct this problem and am terribly sorry to hear that this has happened to you. However, I am more than happy to assist you with this issue.

Finding a solution for you is important to me, so I have requested assistance with the issue you reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.

In the meantime however, I have issued 2 video credits to your "chris98vf@xxxx.xxx" iTunes Store account. You can use these to buy the individual videos of your choice from the iTunes Store.

When you sign in to the iTunes Store with this account, the video credits will appear by your account name in the upper-right corner of the iTunes Store window. The next time you buy a single video from the iTunes Store, your video credits will be used as payment (until all credits have been used or have expired). Please note, however, that video credits cannot be used to purchase or rent full-length movies or episodes of a TV Show that are listed as "Season Only."

If you don't see the credits, refresh your account information by signing out and back in to the iTunes Store. The Sign Out and Sign In options are available from the pull-down Store menu. If you don't see this menu, you should download the latest version of iTunes from our website for free:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

I hope this helps and thank you for your patience and understanding Chris. We appreciate your business and hope you have a great day.

Sincerely,

Eric

I'm calling right now that Dr. Girlfriend and 21 are brother and sister.

They are the Luke and Leia of the Ventureverse.

Replace creepy Sgt. Hatred pedo jokes with creepy incest jokes. It will probably be revealed in a deathbed confession by King Gorilla who I think is their father. I also think King Gorilla's origin will have something to do with Jonas Sr.'s E-DEN.

Ok, now that I've had some time to process, I have two additional thoughts about last night's episode- first, the music was great all around, and second, I wonder how many time the boys have actually died, considering there have been at least 3 or 4 more we've found out about since Powerless in the Face of Death and Brock said these were the 7s.

In Powerless In The Face of Death they said that their death at the end of season 1 was the 14th time they had died, and they showed a montage of 11 deaths (though a few of them were only Hank or only Dean), so there's like 4 - 5 left after that if you assume the 14 count was accurate.

- sucked into the x-1 engine
- giant robot spider
- smoking near flammable gas tanks
- re-enacting the William Tell apple thing
- beheaded on hoverbikes
- devoured by werewolf Doc
- angry Lost-in-Space looking robot
- gas leak (the silent killer)
- shot by 21
- bludgeoned to death by fake-Shaggy in Viva Los Muertos
- #7's shrunk inside Doc

Dean ran with scissors, while Hank jumped off the roof dressed as Batman and was crushed by a satellite.

Nice. I wonder if they are keeping track of all this. They have one left for Hank and two for Dean.

Also the concept of 'the sevens' is great because it means Brock and Doc had no clue where they boys were and just kind of gave up looking for them after a while.

I had assumed that they killed the other boy off if one died (so that he wouldn't remember his brother died when he himself inevitably died). That would bring the total to 15 (there was also the one with the spikes, where Doc and Brock had those moustaches) but the one in Viva Los Muertos could have happened after Powerless in the Face of Death.

I'm overthinking this, aren't I?

In the ep with the Goliath serum Brock explains how he would kill Hank if need be "A quick snap of the neck in your sleep" where Hank then says "You've thought about this haven't you Brock" Brock then says "Yes, yes I have"
That's from memory so it may be misquoted a little but that's the gist...
Is it bad that I know that from memory?

Anyways, I thought this was a solid episode - not great by Venture standards I wouldn't say, but I'm too excited that the show's back to care.

Like most others, I was so geeked for new VB to really take it all in, but I really liked it - I do want to know where the inspiration for laying on the Spider-Man heavy this season is coming from, but I really liked what I saw last night - it's a toss up between "Brock-blocking" and "I'm outta gun food!" for my favorite line...

Agreed. This episode had some of the best one liners, arguments, and all around voice acting of any episode. I gave it a 5 out of 5. And that was after i'd watched it about 7, 8 times.

Well, you and Dr. Girlfriend can breathe a sigh of relief then because the Butter-Glider is dead. I for one am only worried that she may have been pregnant with The Monarch's butter babies when the crash on the compound killed her. Speaking of which, do you think they'll explain how The Monarch wasn't crushed by the S.P.H.Y.N.X. sub? I expect an angry Hunter to at least reference the destruction as it was his sub.

I didn't see it as a Tron tribute, more of a nod to things like Voltron, etc. where the team acknowledged every single step of their action(s). Either way, for some reason whenever Billy and Pete get excited about something I find it increasingly the funnier/funniest part(s) of the show.

Yeah it seemed more like a dig on recycled anime sequences like forming Voltron in every single episode. if you think about the Pete/Billy sequence nothing happened and they basically pointlessly did the entire thing, but those guys are super desperate to be a bigger part of the super-science/villainy/superhero world that they mostly end up watching from afar.

What does the Circle T in the sky stand for? I might have forgotten something, like I completely forgot about King Gorilla for some reason too, took a second to remember him. Mr Monday and White Noise I will not forget.

I wasn't the one who noticed it but thought I'd pass this on. Somebody at the AV Club saw Princess Tinyfeet (or her character model) at KG's welcome home party. I didn't DVR or anything like that so I can't confirm but it sounds like it's true.

Actualy while the music is not at all similar, it is in fact a parody of that. the only diffrence is instead of singinig about someone who's flying with him, the monarchs singing about his transport, hence the joke.

I'm right in line with many of you - I had to watch the episode a few times to soak it all in. It was a very busy episode. I hope that Brock doesn't have to continue coddling Hatred...they're great foils for one another, but I think too much softening up would become the Brock of Ages. Similarly, I thought the Monarch's disconnect early on (not wanting to debrief, etc.) was odd...especially in allowing 21 to lead a mission against the Ventures. I'll be interested to see how these changing dynamics pan out.

My favorites:

Go Pupae Twins! This is the first time I haven't hated TT and Kevin...I'm glad to see the Monarchs threats have put them in their place.

Hank on the .50 cal, and the boys helping dissolve the embolism. I've long awaited them taking a more active role in the adventuring...not that Love Beihts wasn't awesome.

Yeah, love VB, but was disappointed here. They'd been setting the bar so high thematically toward the end of 4.1, particularly with P & P, that this was a big let down. Sure, lots of clever references, but did we take the characters or overall plot anywhere new? 21 is still crushing on Dr. G. Monarch hates Venture, and gets caught up with his own obsessions. Brock kicks tail. Dean and Hank are clones. Yadda. And hated the Monarch's song - missed opportunity. I think back to the start of season 2 - now that was a great opener. This was just another episode; more filler than thriller.

Jackson said very, very specifically that this would NOT be a season-opener episode and that it would be "just another episode".

Jackson and Doc have also said that they hope to make the show have more elements of characters having wacky adventures again like in the old days instead of just constantly settling into more canon. I for one was extremely excited to see the characters going off on a complete, stupid tangent for the first time in a while.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
