Hello again folks,
Both of those references made the entire episode for me, Firestarter was funny enough, but then Jackson and Doc throw us Art of Noise, and the episode suddenly cranked up to 11. Then there's like a billion other old Music Video character references abound in the shelter.
As far as the leader of the group, I'm taking a stab here, but it really looks a lot like General Boy of DEVO fame.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miGe1gtNEac
seriously, it has to be.
Again, great episode of Venture history.
Wonder what that T-Shirt will be...kind of obvious, but who knows, the boys might throw a curveball like last week. Jul. 12, 2008, 5:43pm

I got (and loved) The Shining references, and I could see Mother being like Hal from 2001, so would the third be Dr. Strangelove with the entire "live out a nuclear war underground" deal? Usually their references are more direct, though now that I've said it, I guess it counts.

While we are all pointing out refrences, I'm pretty sure Muther was combination of Mother from "Alien" as far as voice and speech patterns, and, I guess you could either go HAL 9000, The Red Queen, Shodan, or all of the above as far as homicidal computers.
The dude in charge of the underground colony also looked a hell of a lot like Jim Jones of Jonestown.
As far as how I feel on the episode, I can't really tell. It was kind of a fun stand-alone, but it only introduces one new character and doesn't expand much on any of the old ones... well, apart from Jefferson Twilight. I just hope this was the episode where they got all their "oh my god remember 80s music?" out of their system, because that kind of humor really doesn't do much for me. Got a kick out of the movie references, though, so maybe I don't have much room to complain.
I'd say for me the episode was definitely better than the weaker ones in seasons 1 and 2, so calling it my least-favorite of 3 doesn't mean it sucks, it just didn't seem to be up to par. However.... on adultswim.com it's been seen like 120,000 times and has an average rating of 9, so it looks like this it's just me.
Also, we already established that Orpheus can't transport other people in Escape to the House of the Mummies, but then he assembeled the Order of the Triad doing exactly that. Either he's learning new tricks or I call shenanigans. Jul. 12, 2008, 12:20pm

Im in the same boat as you. this episode felt really weak in comparison to the episodes of this season. i felt like they were trying to put too much back story that never got resolved properly, the current story was kind of weak (something i noticed that really bugged me was that hank and dean noticed the open door to the basement, but the order of the triad didn't?? hm). overall it felt like they were relying TOO heavily on people recognizing the 80's references. my first, passive, viewing i didn't pick them all up and the 2nd time around i did find it a bit more funny, but still :-
not the best venture episode. but like you said, better than even the worst from the first 2 seasons, so thats definitely a sign of improvement. maybe by season 8 they will crank out only the best of the best. :-) haha. well i can dream. Jul. 12, 2008, 9:28pm

I don't know how if we can expect complete continuity, though. I've been noticing how the new backstories usually agree with what we've been told earlier, but sometimes are contradictory. Like, "Invisible Hand" tells us that Phantom Limb comes from a line of supervillians and implies that Phantom Limb was in the Guild before his accident, but in "Hate Floats" he tells Brock that he didn't turn evil until the killer-hand accident. (Granted, he could be lying to Brock, but he had no reason to do so.) And the Monarch's reaction to Phantom Limb in "Tag Sale! You're It!" is pretty bizarre now that "Shadowman 9" established that the Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend and PL had a long history. Jul. 14, 2008, 8:59pm

There are explanations for those possible mix ups.
We know Orpheus is still learning his craft, in Escape to the House of Mummies, pt. II whatshisface calls Orpheus his most promising student. We have also seen him train (or at least attempt to train) with the Order. It is possible (likely?) that since then, Orpheus has improved his craft.
We also know from Shadowman 9 that the Monarch had good reason to lie to Dr. Girlfriend in regards to Phantom Limb since I believe it's implied a couple of times that The Monarch never told Dr. Mrs. The Monarch that he had been a henchman for Phantom Limb. He could have been lying and putting on a facade in Tag Sale.
Don't have an explanation for Limb turning evil, but I suspect the entire story of his background isn't out yet. Jul. 14, 2008, 10:25pm

I mean, in "Tag Sale" the Monarch asks Dr. Girlfriend if she and PL used to date and she glosses over it, saying she doesn't know PL. Did they both forget that they had sex for the first time at PL's party and, on the same occasion, PL swore revenge on the Monarch for stealing Dr. Girlfriend from him?
I'm just saying the real reason is that DH and JP make no secret that they're developing the characters as they go, and they might not catch every little detail that's inconsistent. Jul. 14, 2008, 10:59pm

It seemed to me in Tag Sale, that he knew about their history and was dissmissing it the way a boyfriend will dismiss his girlfriend's ex that he's slightly intimidated by. "Didn't you used to work for him, or live by him or something?" is the quote if my memory serves, which gives the impression that he wants her to think that he doesn't care about her history with Limb enough to remember the exact nature of the relationship.

I would say his powers are limited, as implied by the use of dolls as well as his reprimanding Jefferson for travelling to London. The impression I got was that he wouldn't be able to transport him if he were as far away as London, but in fact he was at a theme park made to look like London.

ack! the boring tank!
these are always the same in their cool looks and can't work. i'd love to see one that could actually point the screw at the ground, and actually be the shape of the hole being dug. and something for the inevitable dropping in through the roof of the cave and freefall to the ground. brock practically make his fly into the air to get going.
i don't hate the device. i think it's an important exploration device, especially into lost civilizations full of dinosaurs. but they always look like a tank with a screw on it (ok, i think there was one that was a shoe-buffer type in something). i just want to see one that's reasonably designed to do what it does. I liked the Shining references when MUTHER releases the gas. Colonel Gentleman seeing a guy in a strange costume blowing him and then lots of blood... I guess we learn that Jonas was a bad enough person that he just left a bunch of orphans down in the bombshelter, even after it was safe to get them out. Not to mention the little guy.

Hard to know how to feel about this ep. With all of the setup, it felt like it could have been an hour-long episode.
It also reminded me a little bit of that Brenden Fraser movie Blast From The Past.
Jackson and Doc have really cranked up the "destroy the heroic image of Jonas Venture Sr." machine this season, that's for sure.
He abandons a dozen (or more) young orphans seemingly without a second thought.
A pragmatic snap decision to be sure, but hardly keeping with the heroic image of a '60s cartoon, like the key party and his lousy parenting skills
I kinda give the rest of Team Venture a pass on the whole "abandon the orphans thing", as they were all totally crazy-insane from that "mood enhancer" drug, but Jonas wasn't.
I wonder if this is leading up to something or not.
I give this one high marks for sheer scope (an entire community right underneath the Venture Compound, a tiny-but-not-Antman guy trapped in the fallout shelter, a HAL/Mother-like AI computer, and oh yeah, at least one ICBM under the grounds as well.)
Just wish they would have done more with it, that's all. Jul. 12, 2008, 7:03pm

I'm starting to suspect that Jonas might not really be dead but went all Anakin to Darth Vader. They've been very vague about his "death†and even the council of 13 didn't want to discuss it. We have been seeing that Jonas probably did start out as a good man and father and that his morality and his attitude towards Rusty (secret jealousy that his son was getting more attention then him maybe? The Doctor is Sin ep) started to change over time. I'm sure we'll learn much more about this and what may have changed him as this season moves on. Also, I predict Jonas’ actual status will be the subject of this season's cliffhanger ending! He's not really dead!

What if Jonas Venture was a double agent?
Why else would a second-rate scientist like Rusty get decades-long OSI protection? It's not to protect Rusty -- if they were serious about it, they'd stop his pill-popping and his adventures and negotiate a withdrawal from GCI arching -- it's to protect the vast amount of R&D Jonas left behind when he defected.
Jonas had the ego to want more and more power, and having adventures with his original Team Venture would only slake that so much. The Guild would make him part of the Council of 12, just for coming over with a book of plans. If Haine of the OSI could go over as Sgt. Hatred without getting a target on his back, there has to be a reason why -- I think it's the leverage someone like Jonas Venture would have in truly upsetting the balance of power, if their cold war went hot....
Also, I think Jonas either hated Rusty, or wanted what the Monarch wants -- for Rusty to be more than he is, to uphold a legacy, to be more than a decaying addict. Jul. 15, 2008, 6:15am

Personally, I can't see Jonas going over to the Guild. His character flaw seems to be self-absorption, to the point of neglecting others: Rusty, Dr. Entmann, the orphans. But his ego and his pride has always been in his success as a (benevolent) super-scientist, which is a pretty dire thing to compromise to join the GCI.
To put it another way, if Rusty---the horrible person that he is---had enough belief in his inherent goodness to reject the Guild, I'd imagine it would require astounding circumstances for Jonas to accept the same offer.
-----
Geez, I was trying to think of how many people have just been forgotten in the Venture Compound. There's Entmann, the orphans, Hector, Swifty, the E-Den couple. Good god, it's like the Bermuda Triangle in there. Only, you know, without fake ghost pirate captains. Jul. 15, 2008, 5:54pm

I'm not trying to suggest Jonas joined the Guild or became totally evil (although the Vader refernce I made would imply that I guess). But if he still is alive, something must have made him want to drop out of sight. Maybe he's still "good" but wants the world to think he was killed ala Racer X. I still predict he's alive and will resurface in the season 3 finalee.

An ok episode, better than most of the season so far. I'd probably put it between "Invisible Hand of Fate" and "Dr. Quymn". The opening scene is visually stunning, delivers on that better than "Home Is Where The Hate Is". M.U.T.H.E.R., another of those acronyms and is it just me or is she an incredibly misogynistic invention? Not much plot, but still nice. Wish they'd done more with the underground society (very Beneath The Planet of The Apes-y, by the way) and Jonas's lessons.
One more thing: Was the post credits sequence the longest and most expositional of the series? Seems like it. Jul. 12, 2008, 11:00pm

Looks like we know where the shrink ray came from now. Doc eventually managed to fix Billy, so I wonder if he'll be able to cure Dr. Entmann (probably not, since that would involve succeeding at something, but it will be interesting to see.)
This whole episode is made of awesome. Of course, the Order of the Triad have always been some of my favorite characters, so the screentime they get here is a huge plus in my book. Jefferson Twilight delivers some of the best lines ever here, one right after another.
The 80's music references did wear a bit thin, but I'm actually kind of glad to have them rounding this episode out. Jul. 13, 2008, 3:38am

Actually, Dr. venture curing Entmann isn't that far out a possibility. Rusty may not be the genius his father was (i'm being polite here), but we've seen that what he lacks in creativity he makes up for in understanding. He may not be able to invent anything new, but give him a half-working invention or such and he'll be able to finish the job an make a ouple of improvments.
besides, odds are he's already pawned him off onto JJ Jul. 13, 2008, 7:02pm

Dermott isn't a one-episode character, as he returns in Tears of a Sea cow next week. He's going to be showing up more, it seems.
It seems a little early to call Dr. Quymn a one-episode character, too.
And if "the doctor" you refer to is Dr. Z, he's a cameo just like Action Johnny. Jul. 13, 2008, 5:25am

It's been confirmed that there will be no Baron this season in a JP blog, the closest you'll get is finding out in the 1st episode WTF caused him to have a metal jaw. I think from listening to the Season 2 commentary that JP and Doc find it boring to write for de Baron so he might not be coming back.

I couldn't disagree more. Although the tide on internet forums seems to be against me, the first four episodes of this season worried me. A whole lot of my friends in various parts of the country have independently expressed similar concerns, so I don't think I'm alone. The story is moving much too slowly for such story-driven episodes, the flashback episodes are filling in gaps rather than moving interest forward, the series is becoming too winkingly self-referential, and there's just less funny. But the last three episodes have thrilled me.
Here's the problem: the Monarch story arc is pretty much concluded. They're trying to milk it for new plot threads, but there's just not much there yet. The Monarch plotline worked last season because it naturally progressed out of the VB's adventures from the previous season. Jackson Publick wrote somewhere that his one of his best strengths is taking throwaway references in one episode and building them into full-fledged characters and elements of the VB universe later on. They need a bunch of one-off episodes right now to allow them to expand the universe and develop new threads. A lot of the episodes that are mostly self-contained (Midnight, Mummies, Muertos) are some of the best, and they make the overarching-plot ones all the more special. Jul. 14, 2008, 4:10am

Yeah, I agree, too. While I liked the first four episodes of the season, I was also a bit worried that the series was getting a bit too enamored of its own back-story.
I love the season 1&2 characters and I love to get more info on them. But I'm also aware of shows like Lost, where the creators spent so much time explaining the characters' history that it ended up meandering aimlessly. I think TVB has done pretty well balancing the two sides so far, and I certainly don't begrudge the stand-alone episodes. Jul. 14, 2008, 7:48pm

I enjoyed the episode, but in some ways I feel like it ended before I could really get into it. I think they could have made it an hour long episode and it would have been much more solid. They just brought up so many interesting things and didn't take enough time to really let them stew before they wrapped up the episode. Anyone with me here?

I think it's safe to say that Rusty's finally starting to realize that about his father, and somehow that's making him a better person. I foresee much more of a change in Rusty as this concept plays out more. Really, I just hope that he manages to succeed more, because I like Rusty, as bad as he is, and I want him to, ya know, 'win' in the end.
On a lighter note, I cannot imagine how painful blue balls in your eye could feel. Thank god I am not a Blacula hunter, and I don't have to go where the blacktion is. Jul. 13, 2008, 11:33am

A reference I haven't seen mentioned yet: just before the video of Dr. Venture Sr. is played for the first time, the underground dwellers chant, "Always to wash behind one's ears. Always to brush before bedtime." I believe this is an allusion to the mantras repeated by the animal-human hybrids in The Island of Dr. Moreau ("Not to go on all fours", etc.).

I thought this one was okay, but it didn't really stand out much too me.
Shirt prediction: Order of the Triad -OR- Rusty Venture
Fun Hank quotes:
"There was even talk of french toast... but there was none to be had."
"He wrote a little poem... to his dollies."
"Maybe it's all just a dream??"
Also, I was disappointed that H Jon Benjamin wasn't in the episode... I was hoping he'd be there when Orpheus said he was going to speak to his master, but sadly that encounter occurred off-screen. Jul. 14, 2008, 6:32am

Alright so I guess its obvious (and has already been stated) that the weird guy with the green hair and the Captain America underoos is the lead singer of Prodigy (lol classic). Is M.U.T.H.E.R supposed to be a reference to the Matthew Broderick movie War Games? Also I'm confused about the Marvel Comics character that Brock is making the comparison to. Is he saying that the guy is like Ant Man or is he saying that the guy is like Henry Pym (aka Yellow Jacket)? Yellow Jacket was a "scientist guy" and was one of the founding members of the Avengers. So many good references...so little time to dissect them all.

M.U.T.H.E.R. is probably a reference to the thousand "computer is given too much control, goes bad and kills people" books and movies that have been around as long as the concept of computers has, but the name and voice come from Mother, which was the computer control of the ship in the movie Alien.

I don't really know what to say about this episode other than that Jefferson Twilight had the best lines and that this episode was fucking weird. After seeing Dean kick so much ass last episode, It's kinda dissapointing to see him only have like 4 lines. I'm just glad JP and DH didn't make the only reoccuring black character overly-stereotypical as most shows do now a days.................................

A few things race through my mind after seeing the show on TV, mostly concerning the original Team Venture.
First and most important, Kano speaks, which is awesome.
Second, what happened to Otto Aquarius? He was only in one episode yet he was an original Team Venture member. I don't think he went missionary until after the team broke up.
Third, I feel Jonas wasn't as bad in this episode as everybody says he was. He created a system with too much personality. Even in the Ventureverse, that's pretty futuristic. He had to make sacrifices to ensure somebody got out. Like the spaceship project, he abandoned it out of reverence for the (assumed) dead. Don't take this as Jonas worship, just I feel he gets a bum rap from all the things he did that were actually bad.
One other thing: why don't they just unplug M.U.T.H.E.R.? If plugging in starts her, unplugging would stop her. But I guess that's too easy and the episode would lose tension. Whatever, just venting. Jul. 14, 2008, 8:29am

In addition to the M.U.T.H.E.R.=Aliens and/or 2001 and/or Wargames reference, and all the '80s mucis videos (is that Bowie from "Ashes to Ashes"? and the "Thriller" jacket?), I also counted possible references to Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (I guess that was the ants?), Event Horizon, Logan's Run, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Watership Down--although some of that might just be coincidence and me reading too much into things as usual. . . .

"They weren't taken by Blackulas. I can't rule out Caucasian vampires though."
I know. It's actually kinda sad how useless Jefferson is in most Triad situations. You have to feel for the guy, just trying to avenge his blacula-taken mother and all his friends want to do is get involved in stuff he doesn't really have the magic or wisdom for. Jul. 15, 2008, 4:48am

So Hasbro declined on making Order of the Triad action figures, eh? I'll have to step out my front door and walk five blocks over to their corporate headquarters (giant Mr. Potato Head statues out front and all) and have a chat with them about that. [Note to self: When I'm in there THIS time, sketch diagrams of floor plan so I can devise a sinister plan to snag that big ass 5 foot diameter Millennium Falcon model they got hanging from their ceiling.]
