Bonus Day of Dr. Quymn -- Discussion!
Adult Swim has apparently pushed their normal Friday release of new episodes online to Thursday, I assume for the holiday weekend in the US. As such you can watch the latest Venture Bros. episode and talk about it in the comments here. As always, There Will Be Spoilers so stay away if you don't want to deal with that. Also don't forget you can rate the episode on the capsule page when you're done watching. Enjoy the weekend!

Gentlemen: IT GOES TO 11.
Just like the good Doctor's bodyguard, it satisfies in ways I didn't know I needed.
Like it answers the musical question, "where in the heck *are* all the girl adventurers, anyway?"
And, like I mentioned in the last post, two words: KEY PARTY.
If the T-shirt this week doesn't have a giant Q on it -- and that's not for Master Billy Quizboy -- I will shocked, I tell you, SHOCKED.
Like I wanna see it again, even though I'm at work (like no one else in my cube farm played the Japanese OFFICE over and frickin' over again...), whilst I have the bandwidth....
JUST SEE IT, WILLYA? Jul. 4, 2008, 2:59am

Y'know, I wouldn't be displeased if there were a spinoff show. I know the boys are busy, but as soon as I saw Ma Quymn, heck, I betcha there's a battalion of folks behind me wanting to see flashbacks with that special Mrs. Peel stylee...

That's what's so good about it! It is a stand-alone episode that was still amazing! Don't get me wrong, I love all the plot twists and stuff, but it's nice to see an episode that can be watched by someone who hasn't seen any previous seasons and still enjoy. Kinda like much of season one - while each espisode has some plot that connects with the rest, it is still good enough on it's own to not require any previous knowledge.

Hank's changed bodies since then - maybe Dr. Venture didn't get around to circumcising the new model (he WAS stuck in the wall most of that day.) Presumeably Hank was clueless enough to believe it just grew back?
Enjoyable episode - not quite the instant classic some of the others this season have been, but it was nice to see some actual global adventuring, and another superscientist - for all of the villains in the series, we've seen very little of their arch-ees outside of the Ventures. I immediately thought the same thing about the circumcision, but rethought it. My guess was that this entire episode was a flashback episode to before season one's "Are you there God, it's me Dean." Like, maybe enough people were asking why the heck Hank was circumcised when Dean wasn't that they wrote that into this script (or possibly wrote the whole script as an explanation). I can't believe they'd just forget his circumcision and re-circumcise him, because they were so verbally proud of getting that joke on TV.

It's possible, but considering that's the look Bowie was sporting circa 1966 (check out the "I Dig Everything" cover), and given his involvement as a character in the show, I think it's too uncanny to be a coincidence, a look-alike.
It makes me wonder if he was already involved in the adventuring/arching world at this point, or did he get involved with the Guild after this party?
Even if it is just a coincidence, Jul. 7, 2008, 10:18pm

I can't fricking believe it. I was worried that maybe they were getting alittle too heavy with the pop culture references and endless dialouge this season then BLOW. Dr. Quymn strike out of the jungle and blows me away. The Kneez is gonna freak out when he sees how badass Dean is in this one, AND THE HE ALMOST GETS RAPED!! Best VB Ep Ever, if not, then definatley best solo Jackson ep ever.

Sweet episode, I thought.
Very Scooby Doo ... very Jonny Quest.
At any rate, I thought it was good. The original Team Venture ... hilarious party. HILARIOUS.
The twin girls with Dean? HILARIOUS. Go Dean Venture.
Brock and Virginia ... made me uncomfortable. Very awkward, and so well done.
Not much else happened, but it would be good for the Quymn crew to return in the future ... Jul. 4, 2008, 10:18am

This is what the Venture Bros. does best, telling several different storylines and actually developing people with wants and desidres. Everything worked perfectly. Dean seemed seems a little more outgoing, evnthought he totally freaked out at the three-way( for the record, if Dean is losing hi virginity to anybody, it's gonna be Triana.) brock seemed prepared to truly give up on his faith in human decency. Hank acted like on of those idiots you see in every sitcom trying like hell to ge9t a girl(s). Even Rusty, pehaps the biggest dick on television, seemed more like a lonely human being trying to connect to perhaps the only sane woman that could ever truly love him. And the Quinn family, short as their time was, were an excellent cast of characters. Ginny may have been a little repetitive at times, but she still was a character who cared for something. And the Sisters Quinn, which I will forever call them, seemd liked the perfect comparison and contrast to the boys(Adventuring with their mother and trying to get laid. Give those girls a show today!) Overall, it was on of the best stories for character development for any show I've ever seen.

ahahahahahahaha
This was the funniest episode yet. It was so crazy and awesome. And who knew that Dean was such a chick magnet? Well, girl adventurers at least, but we all know that Dean and Triana will probably never do it. Or if they do, it'll just be a dream, or Triana somehow doesn't remember and the boys die again. Man... Dean is a pimp. : D Jul. 4, 2008, 11:53am

Talk about adding tarnish to armour. Besides being a bad father, Jonas Venture appears to be quite a dubious fellow. Am I the only one who sees an ongoing theme? First, there was conjecture the Monarch is his offspring, chest hair. Now, it is more than possible Dr. Quymn is his daughter. Now, think about this episode...ewww. Another interesting subplot, each child has a distinguishing feature or malady. The Monarch has long eye lashes. Quymn is an epileptic. Dare I say, Quizboy Billy is a hydrocephalic. Don't forget to toss Molotov into the mix. Jonas was spreading more than science during the 60's and 70's.

I wouldn't go that far to suggest Dr. Quymn is his daughter, but seeing that whole Key Party sequence really put into context just how messed up Rusty's childhood was, his Dad definitely was a bad father in the classic 60's swinger type, but with super science adventuer types.
Great episode though, but where the hell is this all going to end up at the finalie? Jul. 4, 2008, 2:34pm

Quymn being his daughter occurred to me, as well. Colonel Gentleman isn't her father, because she calls him 'Horace'. And then she lifts her arms to get picked up and/or hugged by Jonas as he turns away. Could be that she's just an affectionate little girl, but it made me wonder.
Every time we're given a glimpse of what Rusty's childhood was like, it makes him so much more sympathetic. I hope they keep going with this.
But for sure, Jonas spread his seed around. I'm really looking forward to the whole Doc/Monarch brotherhood revelation.
One of my favorite parts:
"Now if I could only bottle that *ass*, I'd be a multi-millionaire."
Pretty hot line for Doc, I must say. Jul. 5, 2008, 12:27am

Yeah, gotta admit, that was surprisingly smooth for dear old Rusty... is it me or, since Killinger's 'intervention', has Rusty been... different? I can't quite put my finger on it, but this doesn't feel like the same Dr. Venture we've been seeing for the last couple of seasons...

In regards to Quymn being Jonas' daughter, there is a moment right when she enters the party, where, when Jonas approaches her, Colonel Gentleman makes a point of looking away, either out of shame that his wife had a child with another man (even though he's gay, the wife suggests he is still in the closet) or simply to give the real father and his daughter a bit of privacy. Either way, I thought the look, on top of the hair, Gentleman's homosexuality, and Jonas' familiarity with Quymn's mother, was pretty telling and I'm fairly convinced that Rusty and Quymn are related.

I gotta throw my suspicion on the possibility that Quymn and Rusty are brother/sister... As soon as I saw her, I noticed that they share an awful lot of features between them... I wasn't even looking for it, and I called 'EWWW... incest.' the second I saw her... to tell you the truth, I'm kind of surprised they didn't go all the way with that (Assuming that Quymn was, in fact, sired by Jonas Sr.)... after all, that would kind of go with the theme of Rusty's sex life being completely effed up...
Maybe she's not, but I felt that the hint was WAY too obvious for them to have not meant for it to be there... After all, haven't we been discussing lately how Hammer and Publick don't generally drop these kind of hints if they don't mean it to go somewhere? Jul. 5, 2008, 8:51am

I thought the idea was just a running joke about how Dr. Quymn is a female mirror image of Dr. Venture, ie, neglectful super scientist parent, twin children, big brawny bodyguard, super jet transport, etc. Both Dr. Venture and Dr. Quymn are a little messed up, neurotic, redheaded, would-be super scientists. It doesn't mean they are brother and sister, though.
Jonas certainly doesn't treat the young Quymn child as though she was his daughter. But we really aren't given enough information to judge the situation. I suspect the brother/sister theory is just another misguided fan theory, but we shall see. Jul. 5, 2008, 10:54am

Note that there appears to be more than random swinger sex going on between Jonas and Dr. Quymn, too--watch how he palms his keys over to her while Colonel Gentleman is ogling his "pretty little thing".
I wasn't particularly wowed by this episode, but I did like the additional characters and backstory. Jul. 7, 2008, 5:59am

I was afraid no one else was going to notice the sim ilarities. same colored hair, child adventurers. If Horace wasn't competely gay it might be a coincidence, but I doubt he ever consummated his marriage, and Jonas and Dr. Quym senior were too immediately affectionate for it to have just been at that party. This was a long term thing. There's no doubt in my mind that Rusty and Dr. Quym are brother and sister, which means that not only did Rusty almost engage in imncest, but Dean was nearly raped by his cousins. I also liked how this episode furthered the idea that being a child adventurer is actually a pretty traumatic and damaging experience. I mean, it apparently drove this woman to epilepsy, and Ginny's mad rantings implied that there was a fair amount of abuse in her life.

Haven't been to this website in a while, but this episode brings me back. This is so far turning out to be great season, maybe better than the first two. Personally I'm getting some hits and misses, with this one, Doctor is Sin, and Invisible hand of Fate marking my favorites, but I'm seeing from reading the other comments that some of the episodes I found least impressive others loved, so it seems more a matter of subjectivity than quality.
I also noticed that now there is a really good mix of who the episodes are centered on, and I'm enjoying the loving hell out of how deep they manage to make characters that in other shows would be cardboard cutouts or forever in the background.
I think this particular episode was the most successful attempt to mix backstory and character developement with humor since Assassinanny and also perhaps the first episode that caused me to worry about wetting myself from laughing. Jul. 4, 2008, 4:03pm

Great episode. The feel throughout with all of the different relationships, etc. really worked well IMO.
Shirt prediction: That "Qx" logo (the prescription sign with the R->Q)
Funny stuff:
Nancy & Drew
"Hank, do you have a cold?"
"I can bench press." (Greatest line ever!)
Rusty rolling off the car when they stop.
"Play it cold."
Rusty's dog-paddle-like swimming.
"What's your hurry?" / "What's your slowey?"
"Go team boobies."
Dean hitting her with the chair!
"She's an epileptic." / "Eww!"
Boxing gorilla!
Plus there was some stuff that will probably be referenced again in the future about the origin of Hank & Dean:
"We have different hair." / "Plus I have a heavier build." - Actually stating some of the obvious things that fans have said about them maybe not being twins...
"19 years 2 months 4 days." - Rusty's reply to Dr. Quymn's "You have no idea how long it's been." - Taking 9 months from that would mean that a child would be 18 and change... isn't that about how old the twins would be if they weren't recloned?
"Put your seed in her and walk out that door again." - Kind of self-explanatory... Jul. 4, 2008, 9:28pm

Dr. Venture said that he had not seen Dr. Quymn since he was ten years old. Unless he's lying or something really weird happened, he's not the father of Dr. Quymn's twins.
I think Ginny was talking about the man who originally knocked Dr. Quymn up, and projecting her fears on to Dr. Venture. Ginny's not exactly stable. She sees every man as a threat to Dr. Quymn, so in her mind Dr. Venture = all men = the man who impregnated and then abandoned Dr. Quymn.
I don't think we are meant to conclude that Dr. Venture is the father of the Quymn twins. Jul. 5, 2008, 11:04am

On second viewing though, I noticed when Dr. Venture is talking to Brock while riding on top of the Land Rover, Dr. Venture mentions "having a bit of a fling years ago" with Dr. Quymn. They do seem to have recognized each other at once, so I doubt that Dr. Venture and Dr. Quymn haven't seen each other since they were ten years old. Rusty's fibbing somewhere.

Good point! I was jumping to conclusions there. You're right, that's even funnier! He's probably bragging to Brock, and then when his life is threatened by Ginny, the truth comes out!
I suppose Dr. Quymn recognized him from photographs; after all they are both semi-famous super scientists/children of super-scientists (or whatever Dr. Quymn's mother was) so they have probably been reading about each other for years without actually meeting in person. Jul. 5, 2008, 12:47pm

I can't help but feel we may have seen the last of the family Quymn, seeing as how Tara (a parody of Lara Croft, anyone?) certainly hates Rusty's guts as of late and Ginny doesn't seem to have EVER liked the Ventures.
Maybe somehow we'll end up seeing Nancy and Drew alone, but I bet Tara, unless she winds up being the Monarch's arch, is out of the picture. Jul. 4, 2008, 11:03pm

I have to say it. That bit with Dean and the twins was...creepy. I mean, those girls are almost certainly underage. Obviously it happens all the time in real life, but do we really need to see this stuff on The Venture Brothers? I probably sound like a prude (trust me, I'm most definitely not) but...ugh.

Teenage sex? Big deal. I'm far more disturbed by Sargent Hatred's pedophilia - now that's creepy. I don't think The Venture Brothers is getting close to crossing the line, though.
I just realized on second viewing that the Quymn twins are trying to get Dean drunk, based on his reaction (spitting it out in surprise) to the "potion" they had him drink. Probably pure vodka. Those Quymn twins have done this sort of thing before. Jul. 5, 2008, 12:44pm

Guys. Seriously. You're missing my point.
I get it. OK?:
Sergeant Hatred molested the boys.
This is called pedophilia.
It's a horrible thing.
None of it was onscreen.
Teenage sex is not pedophilia.
Teenage sex happens all the time.
Unlike Sergeant Hatred's thing, This WAS (started to be) shown onscreen in this episode.
In my opinion, and ONLY in my opinion, it's not something that needs to be SHOWN on The Venture Brothers. Why is it neccessary to show teenagers doing that stuff? Jul. 7, 2008, 3:56am

In my opinion, and ONLY in my opinion, it's not something that needs to be SHOWN on The Venture Brothers. Why is it neccessary to show teenagers doing that stuff? Jul. 7, 2008, 3:56am

Yes, that's probably what it is. I happen to be 32 years old and depictions of underage sex aren't something I'd rather see. It's also something that you can't depict onscreen in a live-action show, at least not with underage actors, without being arrested for it.
I'm not really concerned about who actually sees it or when show's timeslot is.
That wasn't the point.
And because people can't seem to read, I'll spell it out for them: I don't the whole Sergeant Hatred thing either. I'm just glad that it's remained in the area of throwaway jokes and one-liners. Personally I wish it wasn't on the show at all, but I guess those things that boy adventurers in real world would be at risk for (not to mention dying a lot).
Just so there's no question about my objection being based on pious morals, let me just say that Jonas' key party looked pretty amateurish ;) Jul. 7, 2008, 10:20pm

Sorry, I don't see what the big deal is. The mere THOUGHT (without being shown) of Sgt. Hatred's oft referenced pedophilia is a heck of a lot creepier than any of the teenage sex or almost-sex shown in this episode.
This is a show for adults - it's a parody of kids shows, it isn't itself a show for kids. And a lot of things are much creepier if you don't actually see it than if you do.
I stand by my point: Sgt. Hatred's pedophilia (and unseen molestation) is a lot creepier than actually seeing the Quymn twins trying to seduce Dean. A LOT CREEPIER.
It is entirely beside the point that Sgt. Hatred's pedophilia isn't explicitly shown. I can't believe I have to even point this out to anyone. Jul. 7, 2008, 12:11pm

"Who the hell said that what happened the twins and Dean was pedophilia?? "
I certainly never said any such thing: my whole point was that it IS NOT pedophilia, which is why it ain't creepy. Apparently you have a problem with teenagers being shown almost having sex; I have no idea why. It may not be "moral" but it sure as heck ain't creepy.
Implied, unseen molestation and pedophilia on the part of Sgt. Hatred IS creepy. We don't have to be actually shown Sgt. Hatred molesting kids in order to think it is creepy. Jul. 7, 2008, 12:21pm

Considering the types of shows that get aired on Adult Swim alongside The Venture Brothers, I think it is hysterically funny we have people here upset at a couple of teenage girls trying to seduce a teenage boy on a cartoon show. Does anyone forget what else is on Adult Swim late at night???

I have to agree.
And am I the only one who finds Sgt Hatred's love of young boys downright hilarious and ironic? Creepy, sure, but it's part of his characterization, and both instances are pretty low on the scale of offensiveness as far as this show is concerned. In any case, this IS fiction, and a cartoon at that (and a pretty tame one compared to its brethren). . . . Jul. 7, 2008, 10:37pm

Well, gran mal seizures are pretty unpleasant to begin with. Then imagine some twerp showing up and "cleasning" you with a folding chair. Then remember spotty bits of dialogue from your would-be paramour showing disgust at your condition. Finally, think about all that wonderful work you were going to do with the seeds in the forest around your camp and realize these dinks just burned the forest down! I would probably be a little pissed off at them too under those circumstances. :)

I kind of got the feeling that she only went to him so suddenly because of the fight with Ginny. She was thinking of "getting to know him gradually" as a lab assistant probably naively fantastzing about saving him by giving his life a noble direction (she is a bleeding heart type). After a fight with Ginny, who appears to be pretty nearly her only authority/protective figure and clearly the one REALLY taking care of the twins she heads off to Rusty for some Spiteful revenge sex.
What follows, including Thadeus' rejection of her ooky epilepsy when he's a pitiful ball of barely human crap just shows her how stupid she was being and how right Ginny turned out to be and how trapped she is in her screwed up scinece adventurer life.
She's a pretty pathetic character despite being athletic, good looking, and wanting to help people. I'm curious if she's a good doctor or a kook who THINKS she's found a cancer cure based on rainforest mystique and legend alone. Jul. 10, 2008, 5:47am

Good points. Another thing about Tara that creeped me out was that she decided to go "Invite Rusty to her Jungle Fort" only after having that flashback during the party. What does that say about her?
This was a good story and has interesting potential, but the real takeaway I have from it is Jonas Venture was a serious asshole and so were his friends. Jul. 10, 2008, 10:39am

This episode was fun, but I prefer the more plot-driven Venture episodes. This season has hinted at lots of new plot threads and then apparently dropped them (the Monarch getting along with Doc, Doc re-evaluating his moral choices after Killinger's visit, Hatred being nice to Doc to aggravate the Monarch) and created several more yet to be resolved (the Moppets scheming against the Monarch, some connection between Brock and Sgt. Hatred, the re-establishment of the Guild, Phantom Limb on the run, Brock having a son, Triana finally falling for Dean, the Monarch and Dr. Mrs. the Monarch getting a new arch). Unless this episode somehow relates to the main story arc, I'm going to be a little disappointed. At any rate, Jackson and Doc are going to have their hands full tying up all these threads, but hey, they did it in season 2.

I don't know, it seems to be following the same pattern from last season: 1) introduce new plto threads 2) random episodes 3)Develop pplot threads 4) Random episodes 5) Conclude plot threads.
Also, with season 4 already green lit, they probably don't feel as much pressure to tie everything up in a nice bow by the end of season 3. Jul. 5, 2008, 9:27am

On another note, Quymn's whole thing about the cancer cure in the rain forest reminds me of this movie called Medicine Man (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104839/) where Lorriane Bracco is on a similiar quest. Why mention it, you may ask? The movie also starred Sean Connery, who inspired a certain Gentleman of significance in this episode.
Coincidence? There's a good chance it is, but it's still pretty awesome. Jul. 6, 2008, 2:29am

It makes sense that the "Emma Peel" like mom (after all Diana Rigg was the only one to really get Bond to the altar) did have Doctor Quymn after a fling with Gentleman. As to her daughters, I wouldn't put it past Jonny Quest to have fathered them.

I really enjoyed the moment where Brock is fighting Ginnie and he realizes she's not a pushover and he says, "I'm gonna get a good fight out of you!". He's so excited and happy, I would guess (and as far as we've seen) it's been a while since he's gotten a chance to fight anyone worthwhile.

Dr. Quymn was just Doc and Jackson's way to make some references to some Heroines you see in action/adventure genre. Dr. Quymn looks like Lara Croft of Tomb Raider. As for the tissue under the bra of the Quymn Sisters just reminds me of a scene in animal house. Maybe it's just me. I think there is real potental for the characters to show up in future episodes. I'm just waiting for the episode where Dean decides to join Triana on one of here all night parties. Also if the Monarch wants to be the arch-nemisis of Dr. Venture he could always go after Rusty's brother Dr. Jonas Venture Jr.

Great episode! It had the best two moments of the season so far...
1. Hank and Dean taking a stab at all the fans that have overanalyzed the physical differences between them.
2. The ending punchline which not only brought the series back to it's roots but also totally made the episode. (also, how can you NOT love an episode that mixes Indiana Jones references with a weird Any Which Way But Loose reference?) Jul. 7, 2008, 10:04pm

I definitely agree with you regarding Dean and the Twins, that's exactly what I was trying to say in my posts above.
I also thought the character of Ginny was needlessly stereotyped and overdone.
I mean, we all know that Jackson and Doc are FAR better writers than that stuff...so why is that what we've been getting? *confused*
I would also dearly love a flashback-free episode during this season. Just a simple story without the need for tons of exposition. Just my 2 cents is all. Jul. 8, 2008, 4:13am

Seriously... it saddens me that you guys are so offended by this material. This episode was simply hilarious and Jackson's writing has NEVER been better! This episode, along with The Buddy System were two of THE funniest Venture Bros episodes of the season, if not of all time! Ginny's character was hilarious and no more stereotypical than Brock. The fact that the twin girls are raging hormone sex bombs is also hilarious and the attempted "rape" of Dean was the icing on the cake!
Seriously you guys - if this kind of material doesn't suit your fancy then I'm sorry to say that VB is not the show for you. Jul. 8, 2008, 4:33am

I think *you* need to chill the fuck out. Seriously.
VB brings up adult topics, and adults talk about them as adults. That means wondering whether Dean will cringe at the memory of his assault (he was drugged and pinned down, and not interested in those girls -- no air quotes about it, son), or whether he'll follow his dad in treasuring that as one of the few times he'd come close to sex.
That means wondering whether Ginny will ever be happy babysitting a woman and her daughters, and somehow waiting for her devotion to be reciprocated. (Her stereotype didn't bother me, since we've had years to get past *Brock's* stereotype as the perfect man of destruction.)
It also means wondering if I'll ever stop cringing at the evil Doc Venture manages to do, every week, from cloning a child he killed to putting down MBQ just after he saved kids' lives by sacrificing his robot hand to stealing a fertility idol to just taking a kidney from his kids, when he needs one. I don't want to become a callous bastard like you, CC, and need ever-increasing cruelties to get my jollies. If I wanted that, I'd watch ASSY MC GEE and SQUIDBILLIES. Feh.
And as for the underage sex concern? Well, have you heard of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund? They spend time and money resisting Federal and state prosecutions of people who do nothing but draw funny, funny pictures that somehow get called obscene. I don't care how much money Time Warner has (and considering how BET's avoided being shut down as a public menace, I assume it's a *lot*), no network can ignore rabid people pointed at a target that we might find funny, but they find a threat to their children's lives... especially when that threat airs, technically, on a children's network.
I know the VB writers know what they're doing, and I appreciate it. But I'm not going to be all light-hearted about issues that get taken seriously out in the real world -- if they didn't want people to think about them, they wouldn't write about them. This show is for me, seriously, so seriously? Twist and rotate. Jul. 8, 2008, 5:28am

Whoa, dude. Thank you for just proving my point. You obviously take the show way too seriously. Take a minute to realize how funny these episodes are and also that Venture Bros is a far darker and more cruel (and obviously far superior) show than Assy McGee or Squidbillies.
Also, no one is worried about the underage sex thing except maybe some weird ultraprudes. It's funny in context. Get over it.
See the comment below for further clarification.
p.s. Adult Swim isn't a children's network. It's right there in the title. :) Jul. 8, 2008, 10:39pm

It's not an assumption by the way. If an episode of animation this mild really pushed your buttons, clearly you are not the target audience of any show on adult swim. Your message above is proof that you are a little too fragile for this type of comedy (if hilarious stereotyped characters and even more hilarious teen sex antics really make you that uneasy). Frankly your comment that Doc and Jackson are better writers than "this" is just insulting and proves that you really don't understand their show or "get it" at all. Jul. 9, 2008, 2:01am

Seriously, if the scenes in this episode disturbed you or made you feel uncomfortable in any way then I would love to know what show you've actually been watching for the past 30+ episodes. My whole point is that there have been much more "offensive" things on the show prior to this episode, and frankly - if ANY of it actually offends you then I say again, this is not the show for you. Adult Swim isn't a separate network; Cartoon Network is the channel, the holder of VB's copyright, and the wedge that gets it seen in so many households because for the majority of airtime, *it caters to kids*.

Actually Adult Swim IS a seperate network. This was done back in 2005, mostly for ratings purposes. Behold... wikipedia:
"Adult Swim, usually stylized [adult swim], is an adult-oriented television network sharing channel space with Cartoon Network in the United States."
If you would like to read more you can visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adult_Swim which has the full rundown with sources and everything!
I'm also fairly certain that Adult Swim is much more popular on the whole than Cartoon Network.
Basically my point is that no one at Turner is worried about putting adult oriented programming on their network, despite the fact that it shared airtime with a children's network. So why are you? Jul. 9, 2008, 9:56pm

Phil, I think you did a pretty good job with that recap. One thing I don't really agree with you on is your displeasure at being shown the darker side of Jonas Sr.
I think the way he's being handled this season makes a lot of sense and is consistent with both the characters and the themes of the show. You're right in saying that Jonas Sr.'s bad parenting explains Rusty's equally-bad parenting. It doesn't remove Rusty's responsibility for being a bad parent, but it does show that he never had positive role models to learn from. That's more realistic than assuming that Rusty just couldn't be the great father that Jonas was to him.
Besides, there's still plenty of failure on Rusty's end. While Jonas was a terrible father, he was still a great super-scientist. Rusty's inability to follow his father scientifically is still his own flaw, not Jonas'.
Thematically, the whole show's about failure, so why shouldn't Jonas be a failure in some way, too? Moreso, JP and DH said that an undercurrent is that the glorious promises of the future made in the 50s and 60s (flying cars, robot servants, etc.) have come to nothing. The futurism of that period failed, and that's sort of being shown in Jonas Sr. On the surface, he's the model of progress and action but he's really just as screwed up as everyone else. Good call on the Jonas stuff; I agree entirely, even if I didn't realize it until you phrased it so well.
I guess I was assuming that "failure" in the Venture universe was a fairly recent development. The original Team Venture, after all, certainly seemed to have their act together far more than the current. I went along thinking that it was Rusty's generation that let the whole thing fall apart.
But that was presumptuous of me, and you're quite right that this keeps up the overall theme for the show.
I STILL would perhaps prefer to think of Jonas as a good man whose son just couldn't live up to his own potential...but that's selfish of me, and I'm sure with time I'll come around to this more "real" version of the man.
So thanks for that very productive disagreement. :-) Jul. 8, 2008, 5:49pm

What are you referring to in 20 Years to Midnight? Col. Gentleman? I agree he certainly came across as flawed, but he was also an extremely minor character to us at that point. Casting him in different shadows isn't as jarring as revealing the main character's father (with whom we've already spent a lot of time) to be a different kind of person than we would have suspected.

Okay, so I read the noise to signal review and I have read the posts here and I think some of you need to chill the fuck out.
Like presumably all of you, I hold the venture Bros. in high regard. It's among the best shows on tv animated or not, and it should be celebrated for it's depth, rich characterizations and intelligence. What some of you seem to be forgetting is that is should also be celebrated for it's darkness, it's cynicism and it's unflinching ability to deftly make comedic situations out of bitterness, failure and otherwise uncomfortable subject matter.
Someone mentioned the scene in Mid-Life Chrysalis where the Monarch is seen jerking off while watching Sheila perform undercover work of a sexy nature, aroused by the idea of his second in command/girlfriend getting down with his arch nemesis. This along with countless other "tasteless" bits of comedy (remember Doc's weird man-crush on Brock in the pilot?) have been a Venture Bros. staple since the beginning.
Doc and Jackson have tapped in to the dark and sometimes creepy realities of society and the human personality, drawing side-splitting humor out of such taboo topics as child molestation, child death (including suicide and murder), torturing prostitutes, fetishism, bestiality, drug abuse, chronic masturbation, kidnapping, homophobia, prison rape, organ harvesting, dog fighting, mental retardation, infidelity and more.
There was nothing "creepy" or "out of line" in this episode, nor with any of Hatred's molestation charges. If you will all think back to the first time we learned of the boys' encounter with Hatred, it was a hilarious passing joke. Now that Hatred has become an actual character it has been brought up a few more times - and always in the context of a joke, people!
That's my point - this is a comedy show! It's primary objective is to be FUNNY! Not portray strong female characters or use a particular setting to it's fullest geographical potential. And just for the record, there's nothing creepy about hilarious scenes involving raging teen hormones and the Venture twins. No one complained about all the shenanigans in Victor echo November or Dean getting a boner over Triana while riding on Jefferson's shoulders. Funny stuff!
As for the boxing ape - anyone who didn't find this reference laugh-out-loud funny obviously hasn't seen Every Which Way But Loose (or it's awesome sequel Any Which Way You Can). Jul. 8, 2008, 12:17am

I agree, and I'm wondering if people just don't remember being teenagers and younger. I know that my father finds it endlessly amusing to recount the story of how when I was a child a blond neighbor girl wrestled me to the ground to lay a kiss on me. I was apparently quite horrified at the time, I remember her, but that part of my life is kind of a vague blur at this point.
That's what the Dean Venture and Nancy and Drew stuff made me think of, not anything creepy. Jul. 10, 2008, 12:24am

My vote goes for best episode this season, definitely a 10!
In completely unrelated business, I just felt I had to share this with you guys because I know you will appreciate it. Awesome Doctor Girlfriend parody cover of Rolling Stone:

I'm glad there are still people out there that watch this show because of how hysterical it is and don't try to read way too much into it
This episode WAS a 10 out of 10. The Buddy system was a little bit better in my opinion (but then, I'm a sucker for Doc's scripts) but these two have been the funniest and most instantly classic episodes so far. My rankings so far would go something like this...
1. The Buddy System (10/10)
2. Dr. Quymn (10/10)
3. Home is where the Hate Is (10/10)
4. The doctor is Sin (9/10)
5. Shadowman 9 (9/10)
6. Invisible Hand of Fate (8/10) Jul. 8, 2008, 4:40am

My personal ranking of the episodes so far would be
1. Dr. Quym
2. The Invisible Hand of Fate
3. The Doctor is Sin
4. Shadowman 9
5. Home is where the Hate is
6. The Buddy System
So far a stellar season.
Also, I find it interesting that a scene involving teenagers trying to have sex is offensive but an epileptic woman getting beaten with a chair doesn't warrent a mention. Jul. 8, 2008, 5:36pm

Wow...it's funny how different our rankings are.
1) The Invisible Hand of Fate (10/10)
2) Shadowman 9 (9/10)
3) The Buddy System (8.5/10)
4) The Doctor is Sin (8/10)
5) Home is Where the Hate Is (7/10)
6) Dr. Quymn, Medicine Woman (4/10)
I'm being intentionally stingy with the rankings, by the way. You could easily argue me up to a solid 10 for my top three. Jul. 8, 2008, 5:51pm

I, too, am really surprised how much variability there is in the rankings.
1. The Buddy System (10/10)
2. The Invisible Hand of Fate (9.5/10)
3. Shadowman 9 (9/10)
4. The Doctor Is Sin (9/10)
5. Dr. Quymn (8/10)
6. Home Is Where the Hate Is (7.5/10)
Admittedly, "The Buddy System" is basically an expanded "Tag Sale! You're It!" but that was one of my favorite episodes of season 1. Jul. 8, 2008, 7:18pm

I am also quite surprised by the extreme difference in our rankings. I guess it just speaks to the fact that all of us obsessive fans watch the show for slightly different reasons. I agree that The Buddy System is a total throwback to Tag Sale (with a completely different context now that we know so much more about all the characters) but that kind of episode is my personal favorite. I love the story-based stuff but I tend to be a bigger fan of the straight comedy episodes (especially when the comedy is derived from seemingly mundane situations). I also (somewhat obviously) like the darker material and I think sometimes we forget how dark the show actually is. The characters (despite of, or more accurately BECAUSE of their many flaws) are likable and the show has a comfortable feel to it, but most of the comedy in the show is powered by perversion, cruelty and yes, failure - all very real and very relatable human characteristics. There is an obvious underlying sadness to the show and the people that populate it, and it's a tribute to Jackson and Doc's skills for mining this sadness for unrelenting laughs successfully. I just think that sometimes we become so comfortable with the Ventures and their world we forget that it's a cartoonishly ugly place.
p.s. Every Which Way But Loose fucking rules. Best Clint Eastwood movie of all time... easy. Jul. 8, 2008, 10:30pm

Zogg? Quymn is likely Welsh and also the root word for "Queen" as well as 'cunt' ... Perhaps it inspired Neal Stephenson's Qwghlm
