I Know Why the Caged Bird Kills Belated Discussion
Oops, sorry about that. Been busy with random crap this week so Venture-related things accidently took a back seat and I forgot to make this update yesterday. Anyway, I Know Why the Caged Bird Kills is now up on Adult Swim Fix and will of course also be airing on Sunday night at the usual time. You can talk about the episode here, and of course there will probably be spoilers in the comments, so don't read them if you want to be surprised. I swear I'll be on time next week!

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! While "Guess Who's..." was somewhat lacking- I could tell it was gearing up for a priceless gem of awesome. "Caged Bird" was so damn funny. Killinger? amazing. The possible return of Dr. Girlfriend/Lady Etheria to the coccoon? Exciting.
Crazy nut-job potential mommy/psycho ex- american gladiator? Beautiful.
The one liners were many, the humor was fast paced-
the return of the Master as CTG's horse made me fall out of my chair with laughter.
This is the stuff that episodes like Powerless, and House of Mummies were made of.
"oh wait, you were passed out from the wine..."
aaaahhh! Hillarious! Sep. 23, 2006, 5:18pm

Yes!! Finally we can put the theory of "Hank being Brock's son" to bed. The blonde hair the muscular physique, i've been waiting for this ep to come along. Good to see HELPeR back in action again too. Still kinda wondering if we'll see Dr. Henry Killinger again.
By the way, did anyone notice the resemblance between Monarchs accounting office and the office from "Office Space" complete with banners and everything. HAHA, good ep! Sep. 23, 2006, 5:31pm

This episode had an unusually high number of "total badass" moments, from the Monarch's minty-fresh entrance to Dr. Girlfriend fighting off the guards to Brock dropping backwards into the car. Venture Brothers might be first and foremost comedy, but when it dips into straight-out action it outdoes just about every "action" show out there.

Another Great ep, lots of one liners and references that make VB so much fun to watch over and over.
#21,s quotes were priceless - "Can't give an enema to free Willy... What?" and "Semper Fidelis Tyrannosaurus" - had me laughing so loud, that my neighbor came over to see what was so funny... now hes a fan!
Sgt. Hatred into "Inappropriate Touching"?, who knew? Sep. 23, 2006, 7:25pm

For all you high school dropouts and dope-smoking crackheads out there, 'Semper Fidelis Tyrannosaurus' is 21's mixture of two famous quotes - first the Marine Corps oath, 'Semper Fidelis' (always faithful), and second what John Wilkes Booth said after he shot Abraham Lincoln (his first head wound) 'Sic Semper Tyrannis' (thus always to tyrants). This has been your pedantic notice for the day.

Just so this doesn't become a Latin lesson in banter: Good Question: who is guarding the guards?, all I originally intended to say was the "mix" up of quotes - as you pointed out - struck me as devastatingly hilarious and we should applaud yet another brilliant episode of VB - Stet?

For me, the episode had a lot of "WTF?" moments. A Henry Kissinger type guy who tries to get The Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend back together? And gets a Japanese spirit to try and get Dr. Venture and Myra reunited? Weird. But still, lots of henchmen coolness, the Monarch's great entrance, a lot of HELPeR bits, Dr. Girlfriend really kicking ass, and the Monarch's Black Guard. How cool were their costumes? Like Cobra Commander with butterfly wings. Nice.

Wow. I mean wow!
Dr. Henry Killenger, yes!
"Search your feelings boys you know it to be true" - Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader
"So true, funny how it seems, always in time, but never in line for dreams" - Spandau Ballet, "True"
"I bought a ticket to the world, but now I've come back again" - Spandau Ballet, "True"
The Bodyguard-esque montage
"Mitre Storm" another Jasper McVain song! Sep. 23, 2006, 8:27pm

How cool was that first bit with Brock? The whole debate about Zeppelin "We're not done talking about this!" Followed by the dumpster and "Oh no ... Myra's back." BOOM! Even though it wasn't that Brock-centric his moments were awesome.
Venture's gay impression of Orpheus was hilarious too.
Myra trying to breastfeed the boys was outrageous, and Brock trying to come up with a fake backstory for her and accidentally slipping out that clones bit was gold. Killinger and his Oni were a hilarious way to restore the status quo for the Monarch and to get the Venture's a mom. "Dude ... he cured my herpes!" I laughed so hard.
And I really like how the Venture car got a backstory too. Sep. 23, 2006, 10:57pm

My girl and I think that Myra looks a lot like Sharon Stone, now that she's old and skanky. The Brock and HELPeR Led Zep argument was so fucking funny. I hope we haven't seen the last of the Black Guard uniforms, it would be cool if they were the Monarch's elite team like Palpatine's Imperial Guard. This Ep is one of the best ever. I've only seen it once, but I'm under the impression that Myra may NOT be their mom, also. I loved Dr. V's confession, "alright, so I fucked her!"

Finally, those insane Hank/Brock, Dean/Doc cloning theories are disproven once and for all. Ever since Jackson posted that picture of Season 2 characters way back in May I had a feeling that we'd already seen the boys' mom. Actually, almost half of those characters showed up in this episode.
How sad, the boys finally meet their mom and she's bat-shit crazy. I'm not sure they entirely believe she's their mother, plus, they still don't get the fact that they're clones. With Myra presumably locked up, who knows if she'll make another appearance but at least the wild theorizing can end.
Overall, a very good episode, although why Dr. Killinger wants to reunite Doc and Monarch with their old girlfriends is beyond me. Apart from Myra this show had some great "firsts": seeing Dr. Girlfriend's hand to hand skills, HELPeR holding his own in a conversation, the Monarch and crew actually being fearsome, even though they get the address wrong. Also nice to see the War Room from Dr. Strangelove show up in the cocoon. Team Astrobase continues to deliver the goods! Sep. 24, 2006, 3:01am

yeah, i d/loaded and tried torpark, but the ip addresses it uses change really fast, and half aren't even from the states.
i've attempted manually configuring transparent proxies in the firefox connection settings, but they never work. it's an extremely frustrating excersize.
i guess when i go home next i can set up a proxy at my house using it's inexplibly texan ip address, but that would be weeks from now.
double dammit! Sep. 24, 2006, 5:04am

Another thing I forgot to add... Myra said that they should be 19 and they said they were 16, so (assuming she is right) that means that they have only "lost" 3 years through all those clonings...
This could mean a variety of things, but assuming that the first time they were cloned was at 16 then that means that all 14 of those deaths happened in a 3 year period... that is an average of 5 per year or roughly one every 2 months... Sep. 24, 2006, 6:46am

Yeah, I was wondering about that "3 year time lag" and the fact that the boys are roughly the same age through all 14 deaths. Were they never death-prone as children?
And the stuff that happened with Rusty and Brock... Rusty had hair plugs? And became a werewolf? And he and Brock grew moustaches? All I'm saying is, no one's ever seen Hank and Dean as little kids. No photos, no videos, nothing. Kinda weird... Sep. 24, 2006, 9:03pm

This was one of the greatest episodes ever! I've watched it four times now and it each time has been just as funny as the last. I've been trying to figure out what to say about it but it was just to good. Like Dr. Venture's "What if it wants to go back to Japan?" line. Or, "well isn't this new and diffrent." From Dean. Or Killingers, "To save you.......From lonliness Silly-Billy." Some of the best moments too, like Brock getting ready to crash through the windshield, or The Monarchs raid on the accountants office, so friggin' cool. "Magic Murder Bag." GAAA! so good. I mean, Mom Venture? From O.S.I.? C'mon, too great! The Dr. Strangelove warroom, Spin-Art, finally ending the rumors of Dean and Brock. I knew Dean wasn't clone Brock. the only problem was that the Charger and Myra's Mustang seemed kind of cheeply done in this one. Still, right up there with V.E.N. I gotta go watch it again. "wait here while I go to my daughters closet."

The little title on google for this website needs to get re-updated. I google Venture Brothers and it's all "WEBSITE DOWN?" but it's not.
Anyway, I'm going to come in late and agree with everyone else that this episode was just friggen astonishing. Time for some bullet point thoughts:
-Killinger was such a great character, but so surreal that when he pulled an umbrella out of his magic murder bag and flew away with it, it didn't strike me as strange at the time. It seemed in-character, somehow, but looking back I have no idea why.
-The Brock thing was totally badass, but if I had been running the show, I'd have kept that music in the car playing the entire way through, instead of action music when he was zenning.
-Finally, someone agrees with me. It had to be a cartoon robot, but at least someone else doesn't like The Zep.
-I am with the group who believe that the crazy chick really is the mother. It all fits pretty darn well.
-The Venture Brothers themselves had some really good lines playing off each other, I like how they are developing as characters.
-I was thinking before that Orpheus's cat needed some more screen time. I think Orpheus is probably the nicest person in the show.
-Also, Rusty doing an Orpheus impersonation was awesome, and thinking back, The Monarch doing a Dr. Girlfriend impersonation was equally awesome. Gotta be hard as hell to do a voice doing a voice, but what a payoff.
-I didn't recognize the combination of those two famous latin phrases, though I had heard them seperatley. That totally makes me giggle now. As an aside, I'm also totally behind on my famous Russians, I didn't understand the horse thing, but at least I was able to google it to find out. And, like all Venture Brothers humor, both of these jokes were still funny as hell even when I didn't actually "get" them.
I'm out of random thoughts for the time being, so I think I'll just watch this again with a big stupid grin on my face. Sep. 25, 2006, 3:07pm

He is absolutely based on Henry Kissinger, the voice alone confirms that. He's also a reference to Mary Poppins, the English nanny who carries a magical carpetbag that is seemingly bottomless. She would enter the employ of a dysfunctional family and once she brought them together she would fly off by holding on to her magic umbrella. The Mary Poppins books were later adapted into a Disney movie. Mary Poppins is also the inspiration for such shows as Nanny 911, which of course was referenced earlier in Assassinanny 911.
I'm surprised so many people didn't catch that. I guess I'm getting old because I just assumed everyone would remember those old Disney movies from their childhood. Sep. 27, 2006, 6:05pm

I didn't mention Mary Poppins because i made the mistake of assuming everyone caught that and didn't want to insult others intelligence. Kissinger is also more of a niche character if you will so it is easier not to pick up on that.

It's interesting you should bring that up. I too assumed everyone would get it but since the question was still out there I figured I'd jump in. I sincerely hope I don't come across as insulting and if I do, I apologize. I actually think most VB fans are pretty savvy when it comes to pop culture.
I used to wonder why other shows on Adult Swim typically scored higher ratings than Venture Bros. until it struck me that Adult Swim, like most other channels, is typically aiming at the 18-24 demographic. VB, on the other hand, relies heavily on pop culture references that skew towards an older audience, namely people who were kids in the 70's and 80's (people such as Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer).
I think for most people in my age group (30-40) there would be no mistaking the Mary Poppins references, and Kissinger wouldn't be seen as a niche character, but a political figure as recognizable as a Condoleeza Rice or a Dick Cheney today. I should also note that when I was a kid, shows like Jonny Quest, Mary Poppins, Herculoids, even real life figures such as Kissinger were already old news so it's hardly surprising if they are less recognizable today.
The fact that so many 20 somethings (and younger) watch this show and get the jokes speaks highly of VB's fanbase. And if there's ever something you don't quite understand one of us geezers will be happy to inform you, just remember to ask loudly 'cuz our hearing isn't what it used to be. Sep. 27, 2006, 11:18pm

I think another reason why The Venture Brothers gets quite a few viewers in the 18 to 30 year old bracket is because it's so intelligent. There aren't a whole lot of really smart shows out there, and a show that doesn't condescend to it's audience will pick up a wide range of viewers, especially intelligent viewers. One thing that I've noticed when reading the comments left on this site, nobody types in what I call 'internet retard' style, as in using "u" instead of spelling out "you", that kind of thing. Venture Brothers viewers are some of the brightest people out there, judging by the people that post at this site. I think that a lot of the show's younger viewers will still get some of the obscure references because they're more learned than, say, someone who watches "Jackass The Movie".

Well spoken Steve, my thoughts exactly.
In this day of banal reality shows and inane sitcoms that appeal to the lowest common denominator in our society, its hard to find entertainment that does not insult ones intelligence, I'm not trying to be haughty in this observation I'm merely saying that most of the programing out there is dull and lackluster.
I too believe Venture Bros fans are more "on the ball" then the average viewer, no matter their age bracket.
And Mr Noy, thank you for letting this old fart know I'm not the only codger here.
I saw Johnny Quest premier on ch 7 (when I was a kid Jonny Quest, Mary Poppins, Herculoids, and Henry Kissinger were "Current Events", yes I'm older then dirt) and I was glued to the set; I feel the same kind of thrill and anticipation waiting for and watching each and every new episode of Venture Bros, albeit for different reasons. What was up with the car's? That wasn't Brock's Charger, and Doctor O didn't have his black bug.
Also one of my fave thing's about Venture Bros is that the episodes aren't in chronological order. This one takes place before V.E.N. (Dr. Venture doesn't have his robotic arm Master Billy put on) and after the first ep. of Season 2, per timeline.
Dr. Girlfrien kicking ass was great, from season one I got the impression she wasn't much of a fighter (but smart on her feet). Now we know she can kick ass! Sep. 25, 2006, 3:15pm

My bad, Lady Au Par. I thought you said the black bug belonged to Doctor Venture, but you clearly said Doctor O.
The Japanese demon was helping Killinger with his plan to reunite Myra with Doc and the boys. The demon was drawn to the car because it had a strong connection to the Venture family. Rusty invented it before the boys were born. Later he and Myra had sex in it and the boys were probably conceived in that same car.
That couldn't have happened in Orpheus' or Brock's car so the writers had to introduce a car we've never seen before. It probably just sits in the garage unused except whenever Hank and Dean use it for driving practice. Sep. 26, 2006, 2:00am

I don't know what everyone who thinks that this episode put the "hank being brock's clone" arguement to rest was thinking. You are going to take the word of an admittedly crazy person on this one over brocks? So, Dr. Venture banged her? I hate to reiterate 5th grade health class but that doesn't mean that she got pregnant. By the way she didn't look anything like Sharon Stone but she did remind me a lot of Sally Impossible.

Keep up w/your VB trivia, i mean Publick and Doc Hammer have already answered the "who's the mother question" when they said that question would be answered toward the end of this season, i really feel that if you waste your time trying to predict everything thats going to happen, well, you just have too much time on your hands. just sit back and enjoy the ep's w/o stressing out about theories and cliffhangers. Not all your questions are going to be answered, this is in fact an animated show, not real life.

Brock has lied to the boys before ... I mean, they have been cloned 14 times and are still 16 when they should really be 19 ...
He's on Venture's payroll. And his story about her being an American Gladiator who hates the Ventures is pretty thin, when she's clearly more of an older, Molotov Cocktease kinda girl, who Rusty probably drove nuts.
Went nuts, fell in love, had two kids, broke the rules ... that's how Brock gets the job. (Now we just need to find out what Brock screwed up to get assigned such a crappy job). Sep. 26, 2006, 6:24am

Man, theories are like hydras; cut one head off and two sprout to take its place. Since Caged Bird aired I've read theories about Myra being the sister of either Brock or Sally Impossible. Then there are those who use Myra's insanity to discount her claims altogether, or find them ambiguous, at best. Doubtlessly, they're hoping that Myra is a red herring the writers threw in so they can reveal that Brock really IS Hank's dad in the Season Finale. Sorry guys, but it ain't gonna happen.
Myra IS the mother of Hank and Dean, and even though she has clearly gone over the edge, that doesn't mean she's lying. Think about it:
*Doc and Jackson have publicly shot down the clone theory, on-line and in public.
*Myra is old enough to be their mother.
*She slept with Rusty and he confirmed it.
*The Brock/Hank theories are based solely on Hank's hair color, build, and slightly more outgoing personality. Myra explains all of those things, and is a far more logical candidate than Brock.
*Someone mentioned the boys have the same nose as Myra. Granted, but all of the women in the Venture universe have that nose so take that with a fistful of salt.
*In Season 1 Doc said "I started it in a moment of passion and I'll end it that way!" or words to that effect. Myra also refers to her fling with Rusty as the most passionate moment of their lives. That proves nothing, but the writers are clearly making associations between her and Doc's memory of the event that support her being the mother. This is also true of both her and the boys' habit of saying "Ten O'Clock Two O'Clock" when they drive. Again, that in no way proves a blood relationship, but it's another way for the writers to make that connection for the audience that Myra really is their mother.
*Myra was able to enter the Venture compound undetected, and has done so before, so it's a good bet that she's spent some time there and knows their security measures. This lends credence to her claim that she was once Rusty's former bodyguard.
*As we saw in Assassinanny, Rusty is not above hitting on a "hotcha bodyguard"
*Myra may not know that the boys have been cloned but she claims to know their true age. The fact that the boys disagree with her means nothing since they themselves don't know their true ages.
*Myra also knows about the learning aids built within the boys' beds, not something that is common knowledge.
*This post is already too long but suffice it to say Myra being the boys' mother is THEMATICALLY correct. In a series that is so much about failure and the way people don't live up to our expectations, it's appropriate that the boys' mother turned out to be damaged goods. Sep. 26, 2006, 10:04am

I think my earlier response got lost in the ether but good call, Frankie. I forgot about Billy.
That little upturned nose seems like the animators short hand whenever drawing feminine or youthful characters so it makes sense to use it on a Boy-Genius. There are exceptions of course, like Baron Underbheit.
OH ON!!! BARON UNDERBHEIT IS THEIR REAL MOTHER!!!
Now THAT would be twist. Sep. 26, 2006, 7:59pm

Since we're going down THAT road, what about the Monarch? Maybe HE was originally a woman, and the still-unexplained hatred between him and Rusty was an affair that went SO bad, the Monarch went lesbo-tranny (this would also explain his twisted desire for the deep voiced pseudo-women Dr. Girlfriend, AND why Rusty doesn't even understand why the Monarch hates him - Rusty knew him as a woman!)!!
OH NO!! THE MONARCH IS REALLY THE VENTURE BROTHERS MOTHER!!!! Sep. 26, 2006, 9:34pm

On Myra being the boys' mom - that's a 50/50 if you ask me. She's clearly out of her mind, but she and Rusty agree that they slept together.
That she included the detail "you two...came into the world - from out of my body," seems suspicious.
I'd think, after all the trouble OSI underwent to retrieve an AWOL Colonel Gathers, Myra wouldn't still be around. And she didn't look like much of an OSI agent when she was pounding on Dr. Orpheus with all the pugilistic finesse of a 4th grade bully.
Best episode title ever. Sep. 25, 2006, 10:31pm

The "Out of my body" line didn't seem odd to me, it seemed more like a Postpartum Depressed type of thing to say. and as for her "Bully" style fighting not being O.S.I. like; Think of the varrious beatings Brock has given throughout the series most have been "Bully-like." For example: Col. Bud Manstrong, Major Tom's Ghost, The bar tender from Mid-Life Chrysalis, The Mummy from the Pilot Ep., Speedy. Yeah the other times he's scarry as hell like in V.E.N., or Love-Bheits, but most of the time it's not his O.S.I. training, it's just ass kicking.

To Mr. Noy, thank you so much for clearing that up. I now understand the time line for *this* season. ;)
To the person with the comment about how 24 got herpes. When the Monarch was in prison he instructed 24 and 21 to "deliver the herpes smeared sexbots to the traitorous members of the Guild." They said they did and that's how 24 got his herpes. And 24 thought he couldn't get herpes from french-kissing a sexbot. Now he knows.

You're quite welcome. The business with the car didn't make much sense to me until the second time I watched the episode.
By the way, good explanation for 24's condition. I would have never thought of that. He got an STD and he didn't even contract it sexually. The poor guy just can't catch a break. Sep. 26, 2006, 8:07pm

It was great to see Myra stomping the Monarch, in what was obviously an early costume, maybe postcollege era. What exactly happened between Rusty & Monarch in college (they were in a creative writing class together with Peter White!)
Man I need to get a life, I know remember more about VB characters than some of my friends, wait I don't have any friends -GEEK! Sep. 27, 2006, 1:15am

Another thing I really liked in this episode was
"um... him... and the dead guy next to him"
*plink* *splat* *plink* *splat*
Then 21 and 24 carry on their conversation as if nothing had happened. Casual violence makes me happy.
I also like the Catherine the Great thing now that I know the story on it, and the fact everyone knows it's a myth. When McGurk was the three headed dog, it was so Orpheus would correct him and McGurk could talk to Orpheus about being a know-it-all. McGurk as a horse was a much more lazy lesson, I suspect he really just wanted to be a horse screwing manyface.
Also, when Brock was telling Helper to keep his blades out and wave his arms around to frighten Myra off as if she were a bear or something, that just struck me as awesome. Sep. 27, 2006, 2:15am

Frankly, I'm glad that 21 was the one who got Dr. Girlfriend back to the coccoon- seeing as he's the one who wrote "The Flight of the Monarch" which started Dr. G and the Monarch's argument and subsequent separation, right? It's always bugged me how obedient he is to the Monarch when I thought in the ep. Trial of the Monarch it was made pretty clear he put out that book.

Hank also does the "10 o'clock, 2 o'clock" driver's ed mantra in Hate Floats, when Dr. Girlfriend makes him drive Brock's Charger, because she "Doesn't drive mad."
must be a Venture driving thing. i imagine that if we ever see Rusty driving, he'll say the same thing (i'm pretty sure he wasn't actually "driving" in this episode, despite him being behind the wheel.) Sep. 27, 2006, 10:10pm

The hobbit thing I can't tell you, but in Driver's Training courses (at least in the old days) we were taught to look at the steering wheel as a clockface, and the best place to put your hands for maximum control was at the '10:00 o'clock' and '2 o'clock' positions. Now go out there and do some NASCAR!!

the hobbit thing is a led zeppelin thing, ("over The Hills and Far Away", "Misty Mountain Hop", "The Battle of Evermore," and "Ramble On" and maybe some parts of "Stairway to heaven" are all partially tolkien influenced).
it's just another in the long line of thinly veiled, or not at all veiled zeppelin referances.
on another, totally weird not, blind guardian is like one of my favourite bands, and they sing about lord of the ringsey crap constantly. i love it. Sep. 27, 2006, 10:32pm
