"Red Means Stop" Discussion

Somehow the end is upon us. The end of Venture Bros. season six, at any rate. Here's your discussion thread for "Red Means Stop", the season six finale. Use the comments to talk about the episode, the series or whatever else you see fit. As expected and as always, there will be spoilers, so don't read the comments if you haven't seen the episode yet (or if you don't care about spoilers, I guess). Enjoy, and see you next season, whenever that may be.

It's been a long time since I read it in college, but I remember one of the characters, the old woman, had removed half of her butt in order to feed some starving men. It's what came to mind as soon as the guy said what he was eating.

So far shaping up to be a great episode. Clancy Brown (I'm pretty sure that's him) is a treasure as Red Death. Wonder how this whole 'doubles' thing is going down and what Monarch's plan is, seeing as he can't take Red Death down directly. Also, wondering which one in the bathroom prison is actually Jigsaw.

I am sad the last episode of the season didn't say:

~The Venture Bros. Will Return~

Definitely felt like a penultimate, and last week was all setup to get to here.
So... we essentially get two parts of a three part story.... slightly dissatisfactory.

However, Red Death was hilarious to me and I loved seeing everyone get together on a sting. Probably my second favorite episode of the season behind "Happening".

Bring on season seven!

Yeah, I was disappointed that we didn't get a real finale, too. I've been a big fan of the Hank-Sireena storyline, and we didn't get anything about them, at all. Maybe we'll get real resolution of the season's big storylines in the form of a between-seasons special.

In any event, I loved the episode. Not a bad one in the season, in my estimation.

This had a satisfactory closing arc feel for me. There are always questions answered, plot elements left open, and more questions raised in this show. So for me, it was great, exciting, an incredible cap on this swift, sleek season. Much more satisfactory than Devil's Grip. And what really makes it feel proper is the inclusion of OSI & the Guild. I really liked that they came together this time rather than clashing. And this episode makes me excited for the next special, but not directionless until it's here. Well done, Doc.

While this being the last episode of the season, and without any resolution makes this tough to say, but wow, this might have been my favorite Venture Bros. episode ever.

Hilarious, lost of great secondary character appearances, an amazing new character that survived the season, and it was super dark. And hilarious.

To cap it off the best last line reading in a post credits scene in perhaps the history of the show. Wow!

I'm still surprised that nothing concerning Dr. Dugong came up At All the entire season. Really thought that would be a given mention. But then, Wide Wale also was not the central figure to the plot we were led to believe he'd be, rather existing to create a world for the BM, DMTM, the Guild, Level 10's, OSI, Hank & Sirena to all play in. Maybe in the next special!

After a rewatch I think this is actually a very strong episode of the Venture Bros.

The Saw stuff was great and a really fun sideplot that kept this viewer intrigued. It also brings back the idea that Billy thinks Rusty is the Blue Morpho - whjich I had thought was sloppily dropped from earlier on in the season (shows what I know!) I hope this has a fun payoff in the future finale/premiere.

Killing the Blue Morpho is now Dr. Mrs. personal mission which, I think, serves as a nice cliffhanger-esque tag for our future wrap-up episode. I can't see how her relationship with the Monarch will end amicably.

Red Death was a great new villain. And I enjoyed the idea that maybe the Monarch should just finally kill the Ventures. I know he's tried in the past (and failed) but it was always clear Dr. Venture's death would ruin him. Will he now want to kill Dr. Venture to give himself some peace? It may never come up again but I liked that the episode dealt with the idea of the Monarch's obsession from a different angle.

The introduction of fake team Venture I think was the highlight of the season.

*Sick reference alert*: Red Death mentions the marionette the Monarch made to arch Rusty! We saw this back in the episode "Self-Medication!"

Also, even though Doc and Jackson told the reading public that Red Means Stop was, no means, the heart stopping finale we would want it's still totally acceptable that viewers feel let down for not getting their big finale. Their reasons are sound and completely understandable in my opinion but there is an expectation when it comes to seasons of television - particularly when the plot is as serialised as Season 6's was - and this season failed to meet it. The creators obviously wanted to give us a finale but people are still allowed to be upset that the momentum has just halted for an indeterminate amount of time.

I'm personally not upset because the same thing happened with Season 5. We eventually got our Gargantua-2 special.

However, I hope they've ordered an extra 2 episodes for Season 7 so we can avoid this knock on effect for a third time!

"I can't see how her relationship with the Monarch will end amicably."

Oh, actually, I think she will find it an incredible turn on since she will see him as more competent, dangerous, everything she wants The Monarch[!--Ed.] to be.

Remember, she found Hamilton--Phantom Limb--boring. She left him for The Monarch[!--Ed.] way back and returned to him when he agreed to be a partner and, later, fought to get her back. I think she will love the challenge.

Nice thing is, if I am wrong, it will be about two or even more years before we find out!

I don't think so. He's been killing high ranking members of the Guild. She was pissed when he killed protagonists in Season 3. Also, she wanted Phantom Limb to be more villainous but she wasn't impressed when he killed his buyer.

Others may have actual information, but it seems they could not get the voice actors together OR simply could not come up with material for them. They freely admitted they did not have ideas for The Baron, but he was a favorite villain. They just may not have come up with any ideas they felt they could use.

I similarly felt the same with "what, no Molotov?" Maybe they had no ideas. I loved the Warriana-Brock relationship. I kind of hoped a jealous Molotov would show up at some point.

Hey, we did get to see a few appearances of Shoreleave BOOM! Yummy!
  • 0
Mar. 21, 2016, 2:30pm
Steven Rattazzi voiced this season, and they did have an idea for an Orpheus story, but they did t get to it and the Triad inclusion wouldn't have been as organic. Molotov lives in the shadows as a multiple agent, so her absence makes sense. All are missed, but what we did get was amazing and the new characters were all delightful. Til next time!

Last comment (alas):

Red Death (and his steed) appears to be based on Gustav Dore's Bible illustration "The Vision Of Death". There also appears to be some Scary Terry from Rick & Morty in him.

Future thoughts: The Guild paid a bounty on the original Blue Morpho, despite the death appearing to be an accident and Jonas Venture having had his civilian body. I can't think of a better way for The Monarch to rise through the Guild ranks AND get Sheila's affections back than to take credit for killing the new BM.

Red Death might also be based in part on The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe.

Red Mantle is listed in the credits but unless I'm getting senile like Dragoon I don't recall seeing him. Also they have Hunter listed as Col. Hunter Gathers, but isn't it now General Gathers?

Gary was surprised to see all the dead guys at the end yet it seems the Termite was put in there after the others. Wouldn't he have noticed they were dead before if Maestro Wave was killing them off like the butt munch that he is?

On that Pyramid of Peril chart that Gary was showing the Monarch you can see both The Termite and Maestro Wave in the bottom row, so I guess the dead guys were the other three? So we won't be seeing them, other than their gnawed behinds, unless in flashbacks or possible surveillance video footage I guess.

Edit: Wait. I just looked at the chart again and two of the guys were the Wandering Spider, who Gary killed in the woods, and Wes Warhammer, who went Kaboom thanks to The Monarch / Blue Morpho. That just leaves the Hairy Eyeball and some satyr looking guy. I'm pretty sure there were three bodies on the floor when the Termite woke up. So who's the third body belong to?

Random Final Observations:

- The opening is a direct parody of the original Saw film.

- This episodes production number was 607.

- The Morphomobile is covered in the blood of villains 21 presumably captured and locked away in the dungeon... bathroom.

- This episode scored a live broadcast rating of 0.952.

- An animation coloring error occurs where Hatred's nose is momentarily colored in the same as his face tattoo. This happens while everyone shows up at once.

- By the end of this episode Wide Wale is the only one left to murder on the Monarch's hit list, since Red Death has given the Monarch his blessing. Wide Wale also (secretly) wants the Monarch dead for the death of his brother. Dr. Mrs. also wants the Blue Morpho dead. The next episode hour-long episodic should prove very interesting.

- Also, I'd bet that one particular photograph, Vendata's whereabouts, the Blue Morpho's identity, Wide Wale's grief for his dead brother, and Hank's secret dating of Wale's daughter will all come into play heavily during the next hour-long epic.

- Clancy Brown provided the voice for Red Death. He is also famous for voice-over work as Mr. Krabs from Spongebob and Dr. Neo Cortex from the Crash Bandicoot gaming franchise.

- Hunter's civilian clothes are references to real clothes worn by the real Hunter S. Thompson. More or less it's his exact 'Fear and Loathing' outfit made even more famous by Depp in the film adaptation.

- It feels a bit odd when Dr. Mrs. guarantees the Ventures' safety after having just shot Rusty in the previous episode.

- Dr. Mrs. claims that Red Death is the most professional villain still in the game. And this is definitely supported by how easily he tracks down and threatens the Monarch. Also, he can vaporize people with one swipe of his scythe. He also instantly recognizes the Monarch in the park and probably suspects him of being the Blue Morpho since the park.

- Red Death mentions that marionette thing Monarch made for Rusty Venture. A clear reference to the season four episode, "Self-Medication", in which the Monarch briefly makes Rusty into a living marionette.

- ...terrible things!

- The Monarch makes a joke about Thanksgiving. I just found this interesting because this season took place in October (going by security cameras) and it was mentioned the next hour-long episode could possibly be made into a Thanksgiving special.

- 21 made spaghetti with extra dark sauce for supper. And poured purple kool aid for the beverages.

- I love the quick close-up shot of Rusty swirling his drink... seductively.

- It's extra funny in a really sad and pathetic way that Rusty hits on Dr. Mrs. after she (secretly) shot him last week.

- Glad to know Billy still thinks Rusty is... blue.

- Red Death's wife is named Kate, and she makes the best brownies! His daughter is named Laila... but I didn't spell it correctly.

- This is the only season finale episode not to feature the classic: The Venture Bros. Will Return! in the credits. Why this was not added in last minute... is beyond me. Devil's Grip was never meant to be a finale... but they retrofitted everything fine with that one. What gives?

- Obviously, Shore Leave would immediately take the boys out clubbing.

- Rusty dives in without thinking to save Scamp 3 from the prank grenade. This is extra sad when you remember the boys' dog was also named Scamp... until Rusty needed him for product testing and experimentations. Thus, poor skinless Scamp died. Rusty, once a dog saving hero... now a washed up dog killer. Ahh, character progression.

- The werewolf baby murder thing accidentally feels like a reference to Neon Joe.

- Phage as Helper... pure genius. Beep-beep beep beep.

- You have free Will!!! -- I'm sorry, but he needs me to feed on your butt!

- Red Death's mother-in-law is named Carol. The audience learns a ton about this new character if you pay attention. Hopefully, he'll make several reappearances.

- Red Death definitely sees a bit of himself in the Monarch and likes him. This basically saved the Monarch's life.

- Instead of being a dick and kicking everyone out... Rusty actually mixes drinks for everyone instead!

- He makes a good point... 21 should've told him about the spare 'saw' bathroom.

- Kimson "Maxilla Palps" Albert.

- The final beat is a direct illusion to a film.. but the name slips my mind at the moment.

- Where "Devil's Grip" accidentally worked very well as a season ender, this episode really felt like a penultimate before things REALLY get insane.

- Next season [AS] should order twelve production episodes, that way they can still make ten shows, but have the opening and closing episodes each run for one full hour, as is obviously intended by this point in the franchise.

That's it for now. The season is over. Until next time... stay V deep, my good Venturoos!

Nice work Cap (and interesting idea Doc X!).

One thing I just caught: Brock's shoulder holster holds his pistol muzzle-up. This is an unusual configuration, however Steve McQueen wore a similar holster in the movie _Bullitt_, which was custom-made for the film. Coincidence? I think not.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
