What Goes Down, Must.... Capsule?
Just finished it. I notice that the notes section is looking kind of slim. You guys should do something about that, perhaps? Yes?

The costumed blowjob Col. Gentleman receives and the surge of blood coming down the hallway are both straight out of Kubrick's version of The Shining. (The former at least was confirmed on JP's livejournal by the man himself.)
Also, Rusty riding a nuclear warhead is likely (but not definitely) a reference to the end of Dr. Strangelove, in which Slim Pickins does the same thing. Of course Pickins is much more excited about it...but both Strangelove and Venture end with the image of a man riding a warhead into oblivion. It worked for Pickins. Something else I noticed: You have Orpheus use the phrase "daring due."
A common mistake, but it's actually "derring-do."

I recently took a film class and they showed The Shining. The blow job scene is always edited from the TV version of the film on cable so when that part came up the entire college audience gasped and all whispered "What the Fu*k" in unison ;so I don't know if everyone will get that reference.
I think the use of film references do have A LOT to do with the daddy issue. I agree with the Phallic missile idea because we know that Rusty has struggled with trauma from his dad's literal 'missile'; and the Shinning is the ultimate 'bad father' reference. Jul. 17, 2008, 9:56pm

Many of the orphans are dressed as characters from VH1 Classic music videos. Aside from Keith Flint and Art of Noise, the guy in the pointy hat has David Bowie's outfit from "Ashes to Ashes," and another---as Rusty notes---on wears the white suit and circular glasses from The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." I seem to recognize the outfit with the red jacket (it's not the one from Michael Jackson's "Thriller," though; maybe it's Adam Ant?) and the people with feathers in their hair but can't place their videos.
Also, Prodigy's "Firestarter" prominently samples the girl's "Hey!" from Art of Noise's "Close (To the Edit)." I suspect that musical connection inspired the pairing of those groups in the show. Jul. 16, 2008, 3:32pm

Another one. The orphans' chant, "Always to wash behind one's ears! Always to brush before bedtime!" is a reference to the chanted laws of the animal-men in The Island of Doctor Moreau:
"Not to go on all-fours; that is the Law. Are we not Men?
"Not to suck up Drink; that is the Law. Are we not Men?
"Not to eat Fish or Flesh; that is the Law. Are we not Men?
"Not to claw the Bark of Trees; that is the Law. Are we not Men?
"Not to chase other Men; that is the Law. Are we not Men?" Jul. 16, 2008, 5:25pm

The "John 3:16" sign is NOT from random movie people predicting the end of the world. It was reference to Rollen Stewart who would travel around to major sporting events throughout the United States in the 70s and 80s and proudly wave his sign. At one point he was driving over 50,000 miles a year to get from sporting event to event. He was VERY well known in the sports community. For more information:
