The costumed blowjob Col. Gentleman receives and the surge of blood coming down the hallway are both straight out of Kubrick's version of The Shining. (The former at least was confirmed on JP's livejournal by the man himself.)

Also, Rusty riding a nuclear warhead is likely (but not definitely) a reference to the end of Dr. Strangelove, in which Slim Pickins does the same thing. Of course Pickins is much more excited about it...but both Strangelove and Venture end with the image of a man riding a warhead into oblivion. It worked for Pickins. Rusty just ends up covered in sh--.

the symbolism of rusty riding the phalic missle ... his father's missle...having it fall over limp....and explode into a lake of sh*t!

Man! Somebody has some serious father issues!

You know, sometimes a missile is just a missile.

Found JP's confirmation of the Shining nod:
'Next to those creepy twins, the "costumed b.j. at the end of the hall" has always struck me as the spookiest thing in The Shining. It was long overdue for a shout-out!'
From his livejournal.

Something else I noticed: You have Orpheus use the phrase "daring due."

A common mistake, but it's actually "derring-do."

I recently took a film class and they showed The Shining. The blow job scene is always edited from the TV version of the film on cable so when that part came up the entire college audience gasped and all whispered "What the Fu*k" in unison ;so I don't know if everyone will get that reference.
I think the use of film references do have A LOT to do with the daddy issue. I agree with the Phallic missile idea because we know that Rusty has struggled with trauma from his dad's literal 'missile'; and the Shinning is the ultimate 'bad father' reference.

And, in addition, Dr. Strangelove is the ultimate "missile-as-phallus" reference.
