Love-Bheits Discussion
What's that? You guys are back? Okay I guess you can talk about Love-Bheits, which should be up on ASFix right about now. I'm actually writing this on Tuesday night since I'll be busy running around Manhattan all day and night on Friday and I figure I may as well get it out of the way. What's it like in the future, guys? I bet there are still spoilers, so stay out of the comments if you don't want to be spoiled. You guys are smart though, you can figure it out. Enjoy!

This was a good one. The earlier episodes have been pretty laugh-packed, this one not as much in comparison. But still, I liked this one a lot. And apparently, Underland borders on Michigan! So I wonder what's going to happen to Baron Underbheit now that he's been deposed. Probably become Dean's arch-enemy from now on.

Dr. Venture was dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Brock was dressed as Chewbacca.
Dean was first dressed as Leia from "Return of the Jedi" and was later dressed as Leia from "A New Hope".
Hank, of course, was dressed as Batman...again. What a tool.
In one scene Hank seemed to act like the Batman from "Superfriends".
Baron Underbheit had seven wives before he married Dean. So, he had eight wives total. Which king had eight eives? (My history knowledge just failed me.)
There was something that only occured to me at the end of the episode and that was that Underland is a bit like Apokalips from DC Comics. The whole think about volcanic eruptions that shoot straight up seems to be taken from that. Aug. 19, 2006, 1:18am

Love-Bheits, in contrast to last week’s meticulous and idiosyncratic installment, was a real mess. An enjoyable mess, but a mess all the same. While fanboys will no doubt herald the return of Home Insecurity’s swiftly-executed trio, I think it was something of a capitulation. It takes guts to introduce and murder three interesting characters in the span of a minute. To bring them back without so much as an explanation seems like lazy storytelling. Still, for all its flaws, a mediocre episode of Venture Brothers beats a great episode of just about anything else on television...

Shut up, zero. This episode, in contrast to last week's mediocre, Doc Hammer-penned installment, was chock full of the character nuances that make Venture Bros. worth watching. Gone were the Family Guy-esque moments of awkwardness and oblique pop culture references.
Shut the fuck up, zer0hue. Go back to choking on Bobak's shit, which is in fact digested from other people's shit. You limp-dicked faggot.
P.S. Just because characters are caught in an explosion doesn't mean they're dead. It's a cartoon. Aug. 22, 2006, 1:12am

Uuum. Yeah, I think you're reading too much into Zero's comment and taking it WAAAAAAAAY too personally. Lighten up. I don't think Zero was doing anything more then a comparison of this ep and the last. Personally, I liked last weeks better, but saw some fun moments in this weeks.

HA HA! They lose the costume contest every year because Hank is ALWAYS Batman, no matter what their group theme is (Wizard of Oz, KISS, STAR WARS)! I like Dean's remark about the Impossible family making a good Fantastic Four. Somebody wanna tell that kid who they're making fun of? Also, that ring that cut Dean's finger reminded me of the video for Billy Idol's "White Wedding". One of the funniest ep's EVER!!!

I thought it was a lot of fun. It would have been cool if ONE of the "Tiger-Bomb" victims had died, probably Catclops. All three surviving an exploding tiger attack is unlikely, check the statistics yourself.
"Victor Echo November" is a tough act to follow, since it is among the very best episodes ever.
Hank and Dean toasting the election of "a Hitler" was unsettling, and absolutely hilarious. Aug. 19, 2006, 2:38am

Everyone has to admit last week was a hard act to follow. I really enjoyed this episode too, there were some nice one-liners in it ("You're just having fun with your hands, aren't you?").
To all those people who think Hank is Brock's son - could his kid REALLY be this much of a screw-up? But I guess Jonas Sr. had the same problem...
It was nice to see helper in 1 piece again for .7 seconds. Aug. 19, 2006, 2:54am

I don't know why everyone bitches and moans about this episode not being as "good" as the others in this season IT'S VENTURE BROTHERS i don't think you can quatify the episodes they are all good and it is later in the second season so the writers have to come up with alot of hilarious things I think we should give them a break new Venture Bros. is better than any other show one TV which has already been stated. True story: I got to see this episode a day earlier than the general public, because while dicking around with wms/stream/aol thing I changed the number in an attempt to get an earlier episode, and ended up getting this one.
I really didn't like "20 Years to Midnight", or "Escape Frome Yadda Yadda", but everyone else seemed to get a kick out of them, so it's kind of refreshing to see others weren't impressed either.
But of course, I also gotta point out that a poor episode of Venture is better than most other shows on TV. Let's just hope this was the low point of the season. Aug. 19, 2006, 3:50am

The survival of Catclops, Girl Hitler and Manic Eight Ball bothered me. Yes, they are great characters, but they were killed very thoroughly. I realize that I'm doing a Kathy Bates as Annie Wilkes in Misery here. (She complained about a cheat in a Republic serial.) I don't care, that was one of the things she was right about.
Seeing Baron Unterbheit made a fool of and taken down so easily bugged me. He's supposed to be scary, I thought. Maybe they'll make the Monarch terrifying by the end of this season to balance it out. That would be cool.
I guess Hank thinks that Star Wars is lamer than Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Unterland had a good look, and I liked the mounted heads of Baron Unterbheits former wives, and the fact that he took the wedding ring from his former wife's severed hand, that was cool.
Hank as a berzerker was cool, I'm actually surprised he wasn't more competent, but then Unterbheit's men were probably tougher than fake ghost pirates.
Girl Hitler will probably be a good supervillain if they decide to have her in future episodes. Aug. 19, 2006, 3:50am

Isn't Phantom Limb filling that "scary" (or, at least, competent) role quite nicely?
Actually, I find the downfall of Underbheit, and the show's general willingness to substantially change and develop characters, quite refreshing. Much better than the lazy and repetative "villian/problem of the week" writting we get in most American TV shows. It's okay if everything doesn't end up the same at the end of the episode as it was at the begining. Aug. 19, 2006, 11:12am

Not nearly as funny as last week, but still solid... The Michigan thing was great... as was Hank throughout (just like all season - he has been perfect)...
Two questions:
1) When the Baron had on that white dress with the gold neck thing, what was that from? The scene with Magic 8-Ball... I just can't place it (it might be another Star Wars thing)...
2) Was Hank dressed as Batman in the Rocky Horrer Picture Show thing? I can't remember... Aug. 19, 2006, 4:43am

Couple of funny lines though...
"Talk to your son, doc..."
"Boy, listen to your bodyguard."
"Mess with the Cat, and you get the clopse"
(Brock and Doc Venture just look at each other with their standard 'that was stupid' expressions"
"Ja and mess with the girl, and you get ZE HITLER!"
"Wow a girl president? How progressive!"
"And a Hitler! Boy things are really looking up!"
Other things I liked:
The random backstory on the Eunich.
The cat hair.
The mask slits.
The interrogation scene.
Pretty much every scene with Hank.
The balls in jars... and for those of you keeping count, this is the second time we've seen a disembodied organ preserved in a glass jar, AND brings the grand total to 5 disembodied testicles we've had the pleasure of viewing. Aug. 19, 2006, 5:32am

I wasn't too thrilled with Victor. Echo. November. Loved the premiere and 20 Years to Midnight though. I think that's a big draw of the show, different people love different episodes. Was great to see more of Underland.
As for Michigan... it reminds me of Kentucky Fried Movie. Throughout the whole movie they talk about how Detroit is the worst place on Earth, which Underland seems to be.
Dr. Klahn: The CIA thinks they can infiltrate the Mountain of Dr. Klahn!
CIA Agent: You can't scare me, you slant-eyed yellow bastard!
Dr. Klahn: Take him to... Detroit!
CIA Agent: No! No, not Detroit! No! No, please! Anything but that! No! No! Nooooo!!! Aug. 19, 2006, 7:06am

Well, I've had a shower, and thus have had time to think, and I've finally singled out specifically what's wrong with this episode:
1) All the best parts were disposable. When you go back over it, the really good gags were the little snippets between characters that didn't do a thing to advance the plot, but instead added a little more depth to whoever was doing or saying it. The entire segment in the plane before trouble ensued, and all following dialogue and actions from Hank, how Brock convinced Catclopse to let them go (very Payback) and so on, could all have been cut from the episode without detracting from the main story. Instead, they were the best parts.
2)On the flipside, the story itself was clearly a great and funny idea that just refused to be funny in practice. Being an occasional writer myself, I know how hard it is to let go of a great-sounding idea, and an episode around the Baron mistaking a disguised Dean for a potential future bride sounds like a riot. Then, the followup smaller plot points, like "they get sent to the PANTRY" and "the underground movement is really lame" just didn't evolve into anything more than the headline. Maybe it was a lack of time to let the concepts fester.
3) A lot of the fun of Brock is that everyone is very aware of how huge, terrifying, and violent he is. In fact, one of my favorite things about Venture Brothers is that people take note of the crazy stuff... Dr. Girlfriend's voice, Phantom Limb's limbs, Brock's size and palpable bloodlust, it all comes up in other's conversations. So I was disappointed when Brock's spinning of two guys who's heads were impaled on a spear illicited... no fear or surprise response from the remaining henchmen. They just accepted it and threw themselves at him, in the style of every other henchperson in any other show. Kinda took the bite out of what could have been a cool and funny scene.
I'll just chalk this all up to the final growing pains of the show, and the rush Hammer and Publick were in to crank them out toward the end. The truly creative moments of the show probably take a good deal of evolution, and we all know when you rush that, you chance the creation the occasional hideous monster. Let's all chase him into the windmill with our pitchforks and forget about him.
Future seasons will probably show less of this problem, since what with the show growing a loyal and DVD-purchasing fanbase, AS will probably not have to struggle as hard or take as long to decide to greenlight another set of episodes. Aug. 19, 2006, 7:15am

Wow, dude... I really didn't think it SUCKED... I didn't have the feeling I get when SIMPSONS or SOPRANOS drops a Count Dooku. (Hopefully both those shows will be over soon, they're tired.) "Love Bheits" holds up, I just think it:
1) Depends more heavily on "reference humor" than any other episode
2) Sets up a ton of funny crap for the future, like Monarch and Underbheit sharing the cocoon, Brock sewing, the Venture family's greatest international ally being a Hitler, etc...
I also loved the Baron beating the shit out of HELPeR... Poor HELPeR is taking a brutal beating this season. Aug. 19, 2006, 3:29pm

I have LOVED every single venture brothers episode so far. This is just one more great episode, if you complain about this one you're nothing but an elitist pessimist who has no right to complain about anything. Cool episode, I thought.... not a home run like Victor. Echo. November.... but still a good episode... loved the interrogation scene... probably one of the more memorable scenes of the season... almost wish I hadn't seen it earlier on adult swim when they previewed four clips at the beginning of the season... i'm hoping the next episode starts setting up the season ending cliff hanger ... any ideas of what could it be??? odds are that it has something to do with the Venture past...

I don't see why so many people absolutely adore "Victor. Echo. November.", yet seem to detest this episode. First off, they are completely different episodes in their own right with their own style of humor. I know both are Venture Brothers episodes, but you really can't compare them because they have two different levels of humor and style. After all, how can you compare double-dating at a cheap diner to an evil marriage in an evil foreign country?
If anything, look at this episode in a different light. This may not be as funny as "Victor. Echo. November.", but it has far more badass quality to it. I never thought I'd see Brock, Hank, and Doc all running down corridors ready to fight (even though Doc can't). I must admit, that one 10 second scene gave me a quiver of excitement. Plus, it's been a while since we've seen Brock do some hands-on, all out henchmen thwomping.
I personally thought this was a good episode. Only bad points were reviving Catclops, Girl Hitler, and Manic 8-Ball too soon. Aug. 20, 2006, 6:13pm

I don't think the fact that these two recent episodes are totally different themes means it doesn't make sense to like one then dislike the next.
I'm not hating on this episode in comparison to the last one, hard act to follow though it was. I dislike this episode on it's own merits. Aug. 20, 2006, 10:17pm

Just wanted to point out that if Jonah Jr. did in fact hook up with Sally Impossible at the end of "20 Years to Midnight" (which remains to be seen), then it's possible that "Love-Bheits" comes before "20 Years" based on the mention of the Impossible family at the costum contest.

Oh, I know, I was just pointing it out for any other fanatics of the show who actually have a word file where they keep track of the order of the episodes, and write silly notes about the episodes like...
2.06 Victor. Echo. November. (15) (Kim not knowing what Hank looks like implies it comes before Assassinanny 911.)
...and...
2.07 Love-Bheits (14) (Mention of the Impossible family still being together suggest this may come before Twenty Years to Midnight.)
Yes, I know, I'm ridiculous. Aug. 22, 2006, 3:32am

Excellent episode, although in the Venture World that isn't really saying much since all of the episodes are top-notch. Had some funny-ass moments in it. Especially with those two faggot-ass motherfuckers. Baron Underbheit has awful tatse in women. Those bitches were tore-back. No wonder he killed them. It wasn't a fuckin' laugh riot like Victor.Echo.November but it was better than some of the other episodes. Am I trippin' or didn't Catclopse, Girl Hitler, and that fuckin' 8-ball guy die in "Home Insecurity"? It was weird seeing them back. That country is going to get worse now that a Hitler is in charge. Some of you say this episode was flat or lacking in some areas. And I say the only reason you say that is because how high Victor.Echo.November. set the bar. Think about it, if that episode hadn't aired yet you would be prasing this episode. Overall, from 1 to 7, I'd give this episode a 4. What you guys think?????????

I'd put it at 3 or 4. I don't think any other Venture Brothers episodes drop below a 5, apart from "The Terrible Secret of Turtle Bay", but I guess that only sorta-counts as an episode.
I also haven't mentioned the heroic music when Brock, Hank, and Rusty charge off to fight. That's some good friggen heroic music. Aug. 21, 2006, 5:19am

Wow, I really didn't expect to see everybody hating on this episode! The first thing I thought when I saw it was "BEST EPISODE EVER!!!" It's one of the few, the proud! It's up there with "Assassinanny 911" and the ghost pirate episode!
Then again, I'm at a disadvantage here. Of all the episodes to miss, I HAD to miss the one that everybody is raving about. I was out of town for college orientation last Sunday, so I missed "Victor Echo November!" Maybe that's the reason why this episode doesn't seem so bad to me?
Of course, my taste could just be whacko. I didn't like "Powerless in the Face of Death" (In fact, it frightened me at first, making me think a drop in quality had happened between the seasons!) as much as everyone else.
Of course, I can't systematically explain why it rocks. It's much easier to explain why something sucks than why it rocks. Aug. 21, 2006, 5:32am

Go Back To The Victor. Echo. November. Discussion And Scroll Down To Comment #33 There's A Link To The Episode, It's Only The First Half So You Have To Change The _pt1_ To _pt2_ To Finish It.
I Didn't Think I'd Actually Ever Post Anything On The Net But I Can't Let You Go Without Seeing V.E.N. It's The Greatest Episode Ever. Aug. 21, 2006, 6:32pm

Oh geez, that was not the episode to miss. I weep for you.
Kinda funny that you mention Ghosts of the Sargasso as one of your favorites... one of these days this website is going to have to make a voting system to see how people rank all the episodes. My favorites from season one were probably "Mid-life Chrysalis", "Tag Sale, You're It!", and "Return to Spider-Skull Island"... but I dunno...
I really do need to get the DVD, it's been too long since I've seen most of those. I just hope when season 2 finishes Adult Swim starts running VB like they did Home Movies: late at night but almost every night. I'd stay up.
Probably going to have to wait for another season before they are willing to run them earlier in the night. I'll wait. Aug. 21, 2006, 9:13am

I also thought I should mention, one thing this episode does a good job of highlighting is how fluid the action in the show has become in the second season.
In the first, though the action scenes were always really enjoyable, it looked like they kept REALLY close to the story boards, and didn't diviate, so the entire thing ended up kinda playing out like a comic book. Hard to explain, but if you watch the Bond Base Attack in "Incredible Mr. Brisby" or Brock's vehicular rampage in "Dia de los Dangerous" you will see what I mean.
This season does a much better job of capturing motion, just one more vast improvement in an already brilliantly put-together show. Aug. 21, 2006, 9:04am

And speaking of improvements, I've been meaning to comment on the backgrounds in this seasons ep.s, they are fantastic and add so much to the overall feel of the show, even the little details are fun to pick up on, like has anyone else noticed that the X-1 has weapons mounted in the cockpit above the windows?; and so many more, I can watch them over and over and still see things I missed the first time 'round. I have enjoyed each and every ep, some more then others but none have disappointed.

I saw it on the fix and felt it wasn't up to par. Then I re-watched on my 40 inch tv with full stereo and picked up on the lil details I missed (the toothbrush in the ass , etc)
This shit was funny
First this crazy bastard served Dean a fuckin Timber Wolf for dinner. Then he's laying in bed like a school girl talking to 8-ball? Crazy. Then he puts on a wig (like rusty in mid-life) and gold armor? LOL
I just didn't like them bringing back catclops and girl Hitler. Other than that, good episode. Aug. 21, 2006, 3:23pm

Good Question
Actually, I had given that a passing thought, they hit it off fairly well in "Home Insecurity" after a tense moment or two.
And now that Dr Girlfriend appears to be done with the both him and PL, its going to leave a hole in the command structure of the cocoon.
But still both Monarch and Underbheit have very corrosive personalities, so whatever alliance they may form will probably dissolve just as fast.
Anyone else have a thought? Aug. 23, 2006, 6:43am

Horrifying question: why exactly did Dean choose to dress up as slave girl Leia when there were any number of male Star Wars characters left to go as?
Overall I thought this one was OK. Smooth animation, sloppy writing. I prefer it the other way around, but like the Underground, I take it where I can get it, ja? Aug. 21, 2006, 7:40pm

The removing Baron Underbheit from the throne of Underland is a very good concept. It allows him to have even more reason to kill the Ventures and it seems that he's going to be working with the Monarch (if he likes it or not). He's jsut a clone Dr. Doom and how many times have Doom lost control of Latveria to just regain it later in the future.

That last moment... "I got divorced... can I crash at your place?" ...had me hearing the theme music to "The Odd Couple."
The "felt a lump" moment was one of the single funniest, darkest things ever. For that reason alone, I loved this episode.
I agree that bringing back the three apparently murdered henchmen was sort of "meh," though the Magic 8 Ball "asshole" moment was priceless. Aug. 21, 2006, 10:33pm

I wasn't bothered to see the Baron's 3 traitorous underlings return in the least. This isn't intended to be a drama, after all. So if these rather silly characters were brought back because there was more humor to be had with them , I'll roll with it.
Plus I seem to recall an outpouring of anxiety over Hank & Dean's death and the possibility that they WOULDN'T be brought back somehow in season 2. Aug. 22, 2006, 6:16pm

I posted this way above but I think it got lost in the mass of posts... I still don't remember what this is from, but I'm sure somebody does...
When the Baron had on that white dress with the gold neck thing, what was that from (the dress)? The scene with Magic 8-Ball... I just can't place it (it might be another Star Wars thing)... Aug. 24, 2006, 8:09am

Not surprised the three henchmen came back; after all Baron Underbehiet did try to kill them in a Bond villain dumb kind of way. Them coming back is almost mandatory. Man, talk about a bunch of pathetic powers "I have a cat's head for eyes", "I look like Hitler" "I have a magic 8 ball in my chest".

Given that most TV is lame reality shows, re-hashed comedies and dramas, with the best shows going off the air, I think The Venture Brothers is the best show with the best writing out there right now. I don't think there has really been a "bad" episode of VB. There's "Great" and "Good but not great" as far as I'm concerned.

This is one I didn't care too much for at first but it grew on me. Each time I watch it I pick up something I didn't hear before. Kind of the opposite of "House of the Mummies," which I thought was the most brilliant thing the first time around but didn't work as well in subsequent viewings. Ah well. . . .
Speaking of annoying Star Wars references, was the resistance grunt who rescues the Ventures supposed to sound like Jar-Jar? I never paid attention to 1-3 as much as 4-6 so I can't really remember, just that he sounded really familiar. . . .
Loved Girl Hitler's imitation of Lando infiltrating Jabba's palace. Und the random "mit" in hers und Underbheit's dialog. Sep. 3, 2006, 7:53am
