Hate Floats Discussion
Since the last one turned out so successful, I'll be doing one of these for every new episode. Hate Floats should now be available for your viewing pleasure on Adult Swim Fix and will remain up until 6am EST. If you've seen it feel free to post any thoughts you have in the comments. As always THE COMMENTS WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS SO DON'T READ THEM IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE EPISODE (unless you don't care about being spoiled). The episode will premiere on TV at the usual time of 10:30pm EST this Sunday.
Edit [7:32pm] - Jackson updated again, now with full episode titles! I just have to guess on which title is which production number now. Enjoy!

That's because they never met before. They were both in the cocoon in Dia de los Dangerous, but they never interacted, and she was at Dr. Venture's tag sale, but they never saw each other there either. And during her testamony in Trial of the Monarch Dean wasn't in the courtroom.
Kind of funny actually, but they do a really good job of keeping up continuity. Jul. 1, 2006, 3:45am

Hilarious episode as always. Second time through I picked up on some of the little things like Dr. Venture's line "curiosity killed more than just the cat," The Monarch wearing his black hood even under his towel, and the reminiscent way Dr. Girlfriend's/Queen Etherea's (I don't even know what to call her anymore) eyes turned up as she recalled jamming a tracker somewhere on The Monarch's person. Calling Dean a "candy-ass" was excellent as well.

"Damn you nerf ball!" Loved it. Just loved it. Thug Monarch henchmen are great, G. "Does it smell like pot in here?" And we find out that each time the boys die they are always 16. Which is a little sad I guess, but what the hell. That just means they'll always be young & stupid, which is great. "Stop callin' me your f^!@in' mommy!" Can't wait for Assassinanny 911. Go Team Venture!

Oh my fucking god.....Dial up sucks ass. Godfuckingdammit. I can't even get the episodes of [adult swim] fix. Fuck!!!! I'ma update my Chuck Taylors and jam them in your fat-ass bitch!!!....Hate floats sounds like a really great episode. Damn I can't wait to watch it. But what I'm really anxious to see is "Showdown at Cremation Creek" and Episode 26. Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick better blow my head off with their Season 2 finale.!Viva los Muertos! sounds like a spin off of Dia de los Dangerous! Question...How do you guys catch on to these old-ass movie/t.v. references???? Death to dial up............

Can't speak for anyone else, but the reason I catch so many is because I'm old. Saw most of 'em first-run, in an actual theater. Today's my 40th - and I got a fantastic present called 'Hate Floats' yesterday !
Oh, and "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fine-tuned my pop-cultural sensibilities. Jul. 1, 2006, 8:23pm

I share your confusion...I would have to say that the reason for it would probably have to be for comedic reasons.... in other words it is just as funny to see brock in the first episode get shot up by a bunch of darts as it is to see brock get knocked out by just one in the last episode

Great episode. The intro is classic. The opening title changed too. Is this going to be an ongoing theme throughout the season? I don't know about y'all, but I was kinda partial to the old one. I guess if the comic genius of Public and Hammer must shave corners... I could stand for the intro to be shorter...and don't mention Sims 2.... it's like video game crack...

Good episode. I'm going to have to record it when it replays on Sunday so I can rewatch it a few times. One of my favorite things was when the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend were sitting at the table and the Monarch imitated here voice. That had me cracking up.
I was thinking one of the reasons the intro has been shortened could be less time allowed per episode by the network. There always pushing the time shorter and shorter so they have more commercial time. I swear in five years time everything on TV will be 12 minutes long like most of the Williams Street shows. All around an excellent episode-- funny and fun and all that jazz. However the whole thing left me more confused than anything else. I'm completely unclear now on how the cloning business is supposed to work. Do they "turn sixteen" each time they're cloned? Do the clones only work at sixteen? Have they only ever been sixteen? Do their memories get totally trashed when it comes to people/places (because the ending where they're both like "Who are all these people?" seemed to imply that not only did they not remember Dr. G but they didn't remember the Monarch, the Cocoon, any of that stuff)? Heh, I guess this makes me a total overanalyzer, but I really thought I had that cloning business worked out in Powerless... Now I'm not quite sure what's going on. I'll have to wait for the other episodes to show and see what we get from those.
Also, slightly off-topic, but is it just me or did Brock kick extra ass in this episode? Brock's honestly not my favorite character, but he was here. He and PL make a creepily good team. And I thought him calling Doc and the twins his family was sweet... though I realize that makes me (in the words of Dr. Girlfriend) a candy-ass. Jul. 1, 2006, 8:48pm

I was thinking something like that. Doc Venture spends alot of time with Dean while Brock has more scenes with Hank.
I assume Doc clone is Dean & Hank is a Brock clone. Perhaps a promise of eternal life? That might explain why Brock tolerates Doc Venture. What exactly keeps Brock in Doc's employ? Jul. 3, 2006, 3:53am

Hmmm, interesting idea. But, it doesnt explain the "always 16" thing, which suggests that they were cloned at that age. I'd be willing to agree that Hank is more brockish, but what if brock has a sister or something who could be the boys mother? Then you could end up with one like Venture and one like Brock (dean and hank).

Watching it again tonight, when Hank was hanging out with Brock (specifically running back to him with the football after running into the henchmen) I really noticed how his body shape (and obviously hair color) are similar... I've always noticed how his shoulders looked different, but only just now did they look so much like Brock's (Hank just needs a tad more muscle)... Dean obviously has the same build and physical characterstics of Dr. V... Hmm... Maybe another story line for this season...

The comment about Hank being Brock's clone and Dean bein Dr. Venture's clone makes a lot of sense. That would explain, as pointed out why Hank is the more macho and Dean is a little more feminine, and also why if they are both Dr. Venture's clones why Hank has blonde hair. That whole clone being and exact DNA copy of the original would make it impossible for Hank to be Dr. Venture's clone.
Also, was the "Mars-The Bringer of War" piece used in Batman? 'Cause it seemed like 21 was mimicing Batman in getting to and putting on his suit. Jul. 3, 2006, 5:27pm

It shouldn't be possible for Hank to be Brock's clone. Dr. Venture stole one of each of the boy's kidneys after his were stolen in Mexico. For that to work, they both need to be of his blood type and, generally, family. Unless the reason Dr. Venture keeps Brock around is that he is the same blood type...oh damn.

I see where you're coming from, but I'm not so sure about that. Dr. Venture talked about making clone slugs of the boys from nail clippings, not making the boys as clones. Plus, in Mid-life Chrysalis (I've been watching the DVDs), Venture says (not quite verbatim) "oh right, your mother. I never told you about her, did I...", implying they do in fact have a mother.
As far as Brock hanging out with Dr. Venture, the way I've been seeing it is that Brock is a government agent assigned to protect Dr. Venture, Brock's liking him has nothing to do with it. But why OSI would assign their best agent to bodyguard a super-scientist who seems to produce nothing but failures is a question I have been pondering for a while...
(my theory is that it does have something to do with the boys) Jul. 3, 2006, 9:17pm

Also, in "Dia de los Dangerous!" Dr. Venture is able to take a kidney from both Dean and Hank because they have the same blood type as he does (and thus each other). Plus the manner in which he realizes this implies they are both his sons (or clones). But if they were clones, I think they would look more alike, having the same genetic makeup. It's the same with identical twins - yeah, you can tell them apart if you know them well enough, but the similarities are still overwhelmingly obvious. Hank and Dean don't look enough alike.

While Dr. V may be a failure with many of his own projects, he still has access to all of his dad's old research, and probably more importantly, seems to be quite adept at making clones. That could easily be something that the government would want to keep a tight leesh on, and it seems that he may be the only one who can do it (why else would Brisby have asked his help as opposed to one of the other super-scientists like prof. impossible?). But, then again, if hate floats taught us anything it's that brock genuinely cares about the ventures, which suggests that it's more than just an assignment but that he's there voluntarily. Even more than his reaction to his family being kidnapped, he came after venture when he ran away in "death.."

I think they're given their memories back, and then subjected to some of the same educational material that thaddeus himself was subjected to when he was a kid. Don't ask me why they would need to be taught things they already knew, it's just the way that dr. v explained it in "death."

I agree with you guys, the intro was probably the most awesome intro yet! I'm also glad that Dr. Girlfriend is back in a speaking role again. The boys still don't have much to do yet, though. And what was up with Dr. Venture? Ewwwww!
And hey, what's up with the sound mixing this season so far? On both this episode and the premiere, the production seems a lot more crowded and muddy than last season's episodes. All of the characters seem to be talking all at once, or the music is mixed in too loud to hear what they say, I don't know, but in any case, it's headache-inducing. Maybe it's because these recent episodes have both had a lot of plot points to get through, and so they had to squeeze everything together. Or maybe it's because of all the bleeping they had to to lately due to all the cussing since the Monarch's trial. In any case, I hope it gets cleared up soon, because so far it's the ONLY thing keeping this season from being better than last season! Jul. 5, 2006, 3:57am

Actually, forget what I said. I watched the episode again on the Thursday Midnight Showing, and it was fine. I guess the fact that I'd watched the last two episodes on video tape, with someone playing a computer game in the same room, had a negative effect on the viewing experience!

About the dart that knocked out Brock at the end of the episode: In the Trial of the Monarch episode, when Orpheus was reading his memory, didn't the Monarch get shot with a butterfly-looking dart with a Guild logo on it? It could be that the dart that shot Brock was a Guild weapon, and not one of the Monarch's darts that had nearly no effect on him when he was shot with loads of them in the Dia de los Dangerous! episode.

Damn. Ya'll motherfuckers are really gettin' in to this clone theory. My personal opinion is that the boys mother had blonde hair. Dr. Venture had kids by her and Dean obtained Dr. Venture's hair color and personality traits. And Hank got his (theroretical) mother's hair color and some of her traits. She could have been athletic and adventurous like Hank is. The theory that they are clones of Dr. Venture and Brock just doesn't add up in some parts. For example, the "Mother" scene from "Mid-life Chrysalis" wouldn't make sense if they were cloned from Dr.V and Brock. Guess We'll just have to wait and see if they finally answer that question. "Hate Floats" has easily become my Favorite Venture Bros. episode of all-time, knocking "Eeny, Meeny, Miney... Magic!! I was laughing my ass off the whole entire episode. Of course, I couldn't fully enjoy the episode because my drunk-ass uncle was babbling some shit to me about this movie called "House of 1000 Corspes". He would not shut the fuck up!! Bring on Assassinanny 911...............

Oh yeah, and as a little side note......WHY THE FUCK WAS THE VENTURE BROS. NOT IN THE TOP 3 MOST WATCHED SHOW ON SUNDAY????? That fuckin' bitch-ass Family Guy always gets way more credibility than it deserves. And how the fuck did Aqua Teen and Robot Chicken get more viewers than Season 2 premire of The Venture Bros. Man, that is injustice. When [adult swim] said HUGE in Big fonted capital letters before the ratings I thought "The Venture Bros. has finally gotten the respect it deserves. It has finally knocked Family Guy off of it's throne. But when I seen that The Venture Bros. didn't even make it on to the countdown and that Family Guy got 1,000,000+ viewers.....I don't even have words to describe the dissappointment

But then again though, Dr. Venture never said he had kids when he was 24, he just said he lost his virginity at 24. He could have used a condom, then cloned the boys from him and Brock. I'm like that arabian guy from that "Family Guy" episode from South Park...Seriously, Family Guy isn't even that well written. It's jokes are interchangeable and are usually irrelavent to the plot. When this episode airs, our retaliation will be MASSIVE!!!!

Okay. Here’s my little rant on the whole cloning thing going on. . .
I honestly believe, in some way, Brock has something to do with Hank. I say this because of all the similarities between them and the bond they seem to have. As for the “mother” Venture remarks on in Mid-Life, let’s say Venture really did use nail clippings to create the boys. He used those for the DNA. Once he had the DNA from them, he could inject it into an egg. . .Perhaps from the woman who is their “mother”. It may have been possible he had two eggs, one as a back up, and that he got the nail clippings from himself and, somehow, Brock’s DNA could have gotten mixed in from one of his own or it was on Venture’s clipped nail. Like a piece of skin or something. Those two interact in ways that it is possible. So, somehow, maybe Brock’s DNA got mixed in, his DNA went to one egg and Venture’s to the other and both boys are “twins” but not in the way we think. Venture and Brock also seem to go to great lengths to keep the whole cloning thing a secret from the boys, so Venture could have been prepared for the question and have something made up to tell them. As for the kidneys, if Brock has the same blood-type as Venture, then it’ll work. A whole host of theories, but that’s one that makes sense to me and I kind of like. It fits with the whole remark Brock made about “his family” getting kidnapped. If my theory is right, then they are, literally. Jul. 7, 2006, 4:59am

With all the talk of how the boys were originally created, theories of cloning of both Rusty and Brock - um... has no-one thought of the fact that maybe the boys DO have a mother, and that in some weird way the guys did a double-team on her? And nine months later she gave birth to fraternal Rusty/Brock twins? Since Brock already knew Rusty from college, it makes sense that's why he was assigned to guard him, then they just had one crazy night with some slutty chick, and have been stuck together with this weird relationship ever since. Food for thought.
