Shadowman 9: In the Cradle of Destiny Discussion

Since these were fairly popular last season (you know, back in 2006) I'll be putting them up this season for each episode as well. You can use the comments here to post whatever you want about the season three premiere episode. If you're wondering why it's up at 6pm (EST) on Friday it's because that's when the episode gets put up on Adult Swim.com in the video section.

If you haven't seen the episode yet and don't want it to be spoiled you are advised not to read these comments! There may be spoilers present! You have been warned!

Was it just me or were some of the council members the old Team Venture? I'm betting we'll find out next week...

Also, Brock didn't have a speaking role and Venture and the kids didn't even show up...

Yeah, I liked this episode except for the fact that the Ventures or even Brock wasn't involved in it. I liked the shift in focus but I don't like the fact that this is the 2nd episode the boys didn't really appear in. ("Powerless" doesn't count)Hank and Dean are my favorite characters. I think the 2nd episode is when this season is going to really kick some ass. Just like "Hate Floats" did after "Powerless in the face of death"................

Also, I know it was in a tiny window, but that episode looked really good. It's astounding how far the art and animation have come in this show. Some of the stuff in season one was downright abysmal looking, but everything in this episode was stellar quality. I hope it looks as good on a TV.

So here's my question - that bit after the credits with Limb, does that basically just throw the whole defense of the Monarch out the window, by implying he was doing exactly what the Guild was accusing him of doing? That's the way I read it, and thought it hilarious. Excellent episode.

I think so. The "twist" at the end is something I need to see it again to understand fully in terms of its implications.

Dr. Girlfriend's defense was that Phantom Limb wasn't nearly stupid enough not to recognize The Monarch later on, so it's his fault that he was continue to operate as an unauthorized supervillain.

But yeah, after the credits, it certainly does seem that Phantom Limb WAS stupid enough, and somehow believed that the huge, hulking Manotaur was the same person as the skinny little beanpole he encountered years earlier.

But it's clear that he "became" the Monarch for the sake of winning Dr. Girlfriend, not to make Venture's life hell. (He tried doing that before his transformation anyway.)

I didn't notice the robo-hand! But I chalk it up to the small window I had to watch it through...hopefully I would have noticed on Sunday on television.

I did notice his face was all scarred up, but I assumed it was a bandage or something.

And yeah, good point about him "becoming" the Monarch way back when he was a child. But I guess there's no reason to believe he was doing so with villainous purposes...he may have just wanted to be a butterfly, rather than a villain with a butterfly theme.

Well...whatever. It was a great episode, and a hell of a good kickoff to what is probably going to be a very heavy, very confusing season.

Honestly, I think it couldn't compare to the opening scenes of "Powerless in the Face of Death," and Dr. Girlfriedn's revelation that she wanted to return to the fold of the Guild was a bit of a let down. Otherwise, this episode was 100% awesome. The highlight of the episode had to be the reappearance of the Sovereign, and the Monarch's subsequent utterance of "David Bowie!"

I found that so disapointing. I did like the how the they carried on the gag of having a different opening sequence just like they did for Season 2 (Powerless in the Face...). That was cool, but this is the Venture Bros. It would of been nice if some Ventures (Rusty's not talking scenes don't count.) were in it. That was not kickass. And I adore Dr. Girlfriend & Monarch.

I'm impressed. Really impressed. The quality of it all was amazing. I loved the references, the guild history, and the fact that they didn't have to have the Ventures in the whole episode. Not that I don't love them. But let's be honest- all of the characters of the Venture-verse are awesome! Even the villains!

Side note: We don't know exactly what Dr. Girlfriend said at the end of last season. She mentions she was asked to get the Monarch to stop arching Venture, sure. But that doesn't mean that THAT was what she told him. She could still be preggers. Or maybe I'm totally off-base here, and hoping for more. Either way, 1-1000, this episode gets 10000000000000! Thanks Doc and Jackson!

Also Kevin and Tim-Tum? Can't say I much cared for the Moppets, except for when one of them started stabbing one of the henchman after they dumped Gatorade on him, that was hysterical.

I believe brock and the doc said that she was crazy because she thought she was the boys mother. She truly was Rusty's body guard after his dad died. He had sex with her in the venture prototype car. There is no reference to her being osi. maybe the ventures hired out bodyguards before brock came along. She was Powercat the gladiator though.

Where was the music from that they played near the end where all the supervillians showed up to help rebuild the Cacoon? I know I've heard it before in some movie and it's driving me nuts! I'm thinking one of the Conan movies maybe, but I'm sure it's one of those themes that's been used a few things.

So Charlene wasn't a member of the Guild when she number 2’d for Truckules?

They mentioned the theme in the bumper right before the episode aired, it's the Jupiter movement from Holst's Planets.

Yes. This was the song I was remembering, and it does sound "like" the song they used in Shadowman 9, but it is not the same song. I think Badass Robot is correct about it being the Jupiter Movement which also means they probably didn't have to pay anything to use it as it's been around so long. 24 was humming Mars Volta when changing into his Henchman outfit at the opening of Hate Floats (still the funniest scene aver for me!), so this aould follow suite. Thanks all for the help.

It's definitely A Sugarcubes song (one of the council members says, "Einar was ready to sign but Björk's lawyers wouldn't budge..." referring to Einar Örn Benediktsson, the other vocalist in The Sugarcubes. Whether it's "Hit" or not, remains to be seen.

In the montage immediately following that scene (where the Monarch and DGF are being prepared for their initiation as Guild members, the music is very clearly the inspired by "The Orgy" from the soundtrack to the first Conan film (the music played as Conan and crew sneak into Thulsa Doom's temple to rescue the princess).

And no, I don't have a life for noticing that.

I don't believe they actually TELL you what she said. Monarch implies that she was said something about the situation in which we find them when the episode begins. I think based on all of that, she may have revealed to him that she made him stop arching Dr. Venture so the Guild would lay off him as they viewed him as in violation of their by-laws even though he apparently had no idea that he'd run afoul of them.
  • 0

Monarch said fighting the "slaughter bots" was the last thing he expected her to have in mind.
And we learned from the Sovereign that was one of the tests to being villian and villianess.
So, that was what she must have said. She wanted to be Villian and Villianess under the guild in my mind.

I see what you mean by Dr. Girlfriend. But the Monarch was acting like he had never met Phantom Limb, or worked for him, nor that SHE had ever worked for him. Why would some some say "Hey, didn't you work for him or something?," when clearly he had stolen her from PL. Not only did he steal her from him, he made a spectacle of it. The Monarch knew she worked for PL! Why ask that question??? Listen to how he asks it. The question sounds genuine. Otherwise: WHY ASK IT AT ALL????

We should watch that episode again. Maybe in light of our new knowledge, that exchange will play out very differently. Like, for instance, the Monarch knew exactly who Phantom Limb was and was being sarcastic and needling Dr. Girlfriend about her past with Phantom Limb. Even when I watched that episode for the first time, I got the distinct impression that the Monarch knew more about the past relationship between Dr. Girlfriend and Phantom Limb than he was letting on. I think you are interpreting that exchange far too literally.

Jackson and Doc, if they had planned that far ahead, wouldn't have let that exchange seem so be so natural. There would have been an air of ambiguity in the air with what the Monarch said. Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
