That Is A Missile: "The Devil's Grip" Episode Guide

With the end of the season comes the end of the episode guides. I just finished up the episode guide for "The Devil's Grip" and you should check it out. Feel free to let me know about any omissions, errors or whatever else you think should/shouldn't be in there. You can use either the comments or the old contact form to do that. Enjoy! One slight correction:

"HANK
You ain't never gonna stop me from overly sexualized dancing and dressing like an indigent! [Throws up devil horns] Loud rock music!"

He actually doesn't throw up devil horns, he makes the ASL sign for "I love you". (middle two fingers down, pinky and pointer finger up, thumb OUT instead of in for devil horns)

I concur with your statement. Just another Hank-ism.

One thing no one's mentioned is how funny Rose's code name is. A "Triple Threat" refers to someone who can sing, act and dance, so her love of dancing and showtunes naturally flows out of that. It also makes her partner's code name ("Jazz") more understandable.

Damn, Doc Hammer's vast genius again strikes!
That's so V deep it passed me by.
I bet you are 100% correct.

True that, though on my closed captioning the gentleman's name was "Jass," but that might have been an error on the CC.

I thought Jazz bore a pretty good resemblance to Fred Astaire, which would make Triple Threat maybe Judy Garland or Barrie Chase? Not sure on that one.

Great job. I feel like 'Hench has killed hench' is a reference to something but I don't know what.

"Ape has killed Ape!" - From Battle for the Planet of the Apes. When it was revealed that General Aldo was responsible for killing Caesar's son one of the apes took up this chant followed by the others. I think it deserves a mention in the capsule, which is great as always I might ad.

It should be! I still haven't seen Planet of the Apes, which is why I didn't know that one offhand. :(

We've got your back covered for those very few things which you might miss or be unsure of. This site has become quite the brain tank for this sort of knowledge, which makes it even more the awesomeness that it is, and I feel honored to be a part of it. It also testifies to the savvyness of VB fans in general.

If you do watch the Apes films, start with the original Charleston Heston one, followed by the other three. Not saying they're all gems, but if you're into them they work. You can skip the Marky Mark 2001 remake as they totally missed the point in regards to the social and political commentary of the original. I have not seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

I have seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It's good though I have no context for it beyond what I know about the original movie offhand (and that Simpson's episode). It's kind of a solid action movie though, not too much else to it. Some silliness here and there, but worth watching if you happen to think of it, but I wouldn't say you need to track it down or anything.

Again, the show is so V deep with references I didn't catch that either.
I've seen most of the 'Apes' films, but not that one.

Nice job again Doc, and cpc65 for catching it.

That annoyed me, because in 'Return to Malice' the Monarch mentions that 21 had killed a number of henchmen himself...plus he and 24 set up another henchman as the writer of Flight of the Monarch.

The arena scene, the judo lizards and the phrase "we will not fight each other" are star trek references.

Was that from Gamesters of Triskelion? While I consider myself a Trek fan, I don't have the dialog from every episode committed to memory. I mostly just remember the alien babe in the silver foil bikini from that one. Ah, Kirk you lucky bastard.

Anyone else notice that when The Monarch spouted his "I HAVE CRUSHED DR. VENTURE!!" line it looked like we were viewing it through a fish-eye lens or a door peep-hole for just a second or two? I'm wondering if there is a hidden camera in the bedroom and The Revenge Society was watching?

reminds me of the ending of 1980's "Flash Gordon", and ties into the "Ming the Merciless" costume Monarch has on earlier.

There's a sad story on CNN today about a 13 year-old girl who died from a peanut allergy even though she had been taking Epinephrine injections to suppress her allergy. The article states, "Epinephrine is the only treatment known to prevent a serious allergic reaction from turning deadly."

It occurs to me that the Monarch's family home at the end - though architecturally based on an existing structure - might be a reference to Tyler Durden's appropriated home in Fight Club. A dilapidated mansion on the edge of land consumed by industrial complex.

That and apparently, that's a close to accurate depiction of how the area around that actual house is now

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
