Well, it's finally here, the season 4.1 finale. Tonight's episode, Pinstripes & Poltergeists will be on shortly for east coast viewers. It's the mid-season finale, which means we won't see any new episodes until the second half of the season starts up sometime in the spring of 2010. Enjoy! As always there will be spoilers in the comments, do don't read them if you're not into that kind of thing.

I thought the voice was just fine. A bit different, but maybe the ghost thing accounts for it (?). His model actually seemed to me to be just slightly off in a few finicky ways, but I thought he looked and sounded great, anyway. Kind of like a new-season coat of paint.

You're right about a little discrepency there, but I honestly expected it. Jackson had joked at one point that they had purposefully killed off 24 with the intention of bringing him back as the same character, bu with an "easier voice". One of my favorite CMcC voices, its evidently quite a strain, and a little painful for him to pull off.

Do you think Dr. Orpheus could see 24, now that he's a ghost? He could see the Japanese spirit demon following Dr. Venture when nobody else could. That would be a mighty weird interaction, the Triad (hopefully Jefferson has enough magic in him to be able to see ghosts) and 21 having a conversation with 24's spirit.

It wasn't a time bomb. It had a remote detonator that was last seen on Dr. Mrs. The Monarch's throne when she ran outside to help The Monarch. The Moppets where the only ones not seen outside during the battle when the bomb went off. They had it in for both 21 and 24. Anyone that was in the control room at that time would have been able to see what was going on outside on the big screen. Blowing up H.E.L.P.eR. was simply just a means to take out 24.

...I doubt an end (as J&D aren't prone to ending characters, but repurposing them), but I'm elated to see them put in there place. I'll put my money on them going AWOL after their general fall-from-grace eats at them enough. One gets killed, the other ends up with custodial duties under the Capt'n out at Spider Skill Island.

Well, I'm happy. A few sappy speeches from Brock, but otherwise no complaints. It seems like they what we want, so they bring it. Love all the SPHINX stuff. Monstroso was okay, good for a few laughs and puns but wasn't what I was expecting. And 24, so nice to have him back and helping 21 out. Of course, Brock- great to have him back and in classic form. I so called the 21/Brock teamup.
So, anybody notice who did the SPHINX song? Ween. Just putting it out there.

It's hard to know if all the hints that 21 is going to go rogue are just a red herring or the real deal, but I for one would love to see him join SPHINX or even become a hero/villain on his own. I want to shake Doc's hand and formally say sorry for bitching about the season, because he just ended it STRONG! Two amazing Episodes in a row to bring Venture back to the greatness it always SOHOULD have been and once again is.
There was so much greatness, I have to put it in obnixious list-form to try to get it all in!

-Brock's return was amazing; played up with the hillarious "smell" side joke
-Finally acknowledging what Terribly annoying Characters the Moppets are,
-24's return (sort of)
the face off between 21 and Brock. We all knew what would happen there, but still a blast to see!
-Speedy, Monstroso, the AMAZING SPHINX intro.....
Hot damn, this episode put me on cloud 9, and to top it all off: Fricking Firefly Reference!

Even Hatered's Pedophile joke was done just right; It was a passing thing, played as part of another joke. Perfect, and humorous.
I can't wait until the next half-season airs; I need more!

The Firefly references were great! And I really wasn't sure what would happen with Brock and 21 battling it out. Brock might have killed 21 off, or Brock could have taken a dive for 21's sake. It was pretty amazing that 21 could get into a fight with Brock and not get killed, and he could last a decent amount of time. It was daytime when they started, and night when 21 was picking himself up off the ground. So he stayed in the fight for a nice chunk of time, pretty impressive.

Still, despite what he said, it seemed that Brock wasn't going too hard on him - just kinda enjoying the good fight. Then again, it wasn''t a fight to the death or anything; hence, no knife.

Leave it to Rusty to still employ not only a 3 1/2" AND a 5 1/4" drive in a computer (with monitor sitting ON TOP of the tower) but allusions to a Commodore 64 somewhere else in the compound. Also the lack of a CD-ROM drive was pretty hilarious as well.

This episode was truly fan-fucking-tastic. Out of all the things though, I truly smiled when 21 and 24 were taking about the meaning of life and 24 busted out 42 and the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy was mentioned, probably my favorite book ever. Great way to end this half of the season.

if gary was using his intuition like 24 said then he would know that monstroso would have no problem killing him (21) since hes just a henchman, hence the gun in the pocket of the guy behind him, but would not be looking to kill the monarch bc hes a fellow supervillian and its probably against guild law, hence the ether soaked hankie held by the guy behind monarch. I gotta admit doc has an amazing sense for the little things, so it could go either way with 24 being real or not.

I loved the part where Dr.Mrs.TheMonarch bends over 21 and he has a flashback to when he was a little kid, and I noticed him as a little kid looks alot like his little brother from return to malice.

Noticed a diploma on the wall in Monstroso's office: "Brotherhood Of Menace: Treasurer - 2003 - 200?"

Another organization? Foreshadowing?

Also: "Rancor University of Global Management". Another excellent Star Wars reference.

bitter, rankling resentment or ill will; hatred; malice."

Man, I freakin' loved 21 in this episode. I loved that this loser geek turned himself into someone who could actually land a punch or two on Brock, and is probably the first Monarch henchman to survive a direct encounter with "super kill guy." This makes 21, what, the #2 badass in their whole world? Or maybe third after Molotov? I'm probably reading too much into it, but it's a huge fan service to have the nerdiest character on the show develop into something more than a cliche and pure punchline.

I'm also glad that 24 is kind of/maybe still around. I hope they keep his status ambiguous, although if "The Better Man" is any indication the afterlife does exist. The reappearance of Speedy was awesome too.

So I guess this week it should be, "Go Team Henchmen!"

I'm sure 21 is okay. Maybe a bit banged up. If Brock teams up with somebody, I'm sure he'd look out for them. It's seems that Brock has a newfound respect fo 21. Anyone able to knock Brock on his ass deserves it. Otherwise, Brock would have finished him off like some many other henchmen and wanna -be Venture arches. The question is, did they actually kill Monstroso, or just badly wound him to force him to break the contract?

1. ORB does nothing, it's broken.
8. Should say "Who is Dermott's father?" It could easily be Action Johnny, or possibly someone out of left field.
18. Probably doesn't matter....these are probably typical happenings of super-villains.
26. To sleep. He was tranquilized to quell his 'immediate needs'.....and just wasn't integral to the next episode's story.
29. Their clones were destroyed at the end of last season.....so....they aren't around to be discovered. Maybe you meant to say "they're" instead of "their"?....because that is a different question entirely.

One I would add: How is SPHINX funded?

Don't forget that when he defected, Hunter took "nine mil of the agency's money". Plus there's that hot wad of hundred dollar bills he earned. Just don't ask him how.

I'm pretty sure Dermott dropped the "I think I am the illegitimate son of Brock Sampson" bomb off the cuff in one of the episodes this season, or was it last season. Anyway I think I remember hearing it some where.

Possibly Hunter Gathers is able to fund all of this from all the money he makes off of his now deceased "alter-ego" Hunter S. Thompson?

1.what the ORB does.

Irrelevant. That thing was introduced to make fun of crazy fans and it ended up making those fans more crazy. It doesn't do anything, it's been broken for years!

2.Who's behind the ORB conspiracy.

What conspiracy? :(

3.The moppets plan from "home is where the hate is"

I wouldn't put too much thought into that, they just seemed like they wanted to ruin 21 and 24's lives.

5.Phantom limbs current state.

A Guild prison cell?

6.The fate of sally's brother cody.(He's probably on spider skull island_

That's a terrible character to make regular because all he does is run around and scream. But he's probably still in that box.

7.trianna's friend kim becoming a super villan(Victor, echo, november)(Jackson and doc said they weren't gonna tackle this)

Oh god please stop

12. How the Guild was founded in its current inception

We kind of know that, it apparently had a downturn in the 70s maybe and Phantom Limb and Sgt. Hatred (probably with others) were able to restart it in the late 80s.

17.Who killed 24?(probably the moppets)

Seems it.

18.What did the guild think of the fiasco at the end of last season?

They had no involvement, so I doubt they care. That was all Hunter's doing.

19.What will become of dr.impossible now he's come off heavens high and hitting an all time low?

He's in 4.2, so we'll find out!

20.and finally(i think) the new status quo in underland and underbhiets current status.

It's run by a Hitler, so...

26. Where did sgt.hatred go after self-medication?

They probably got him more medicine.

29. Will hank and dean ever discover their clones? For real?

Probably not.

32. Will captain sunshine ever get over wonder boy?

Probably not.

#30. If Brock and 21 were planning to kill Monstroso, why were they wearing disguises? (Brock was out of uniform, and Gary was wearing a Jedi outfit, so they wouldn't be traced back to Sphinx and the Monarch.)

I'm pretty sure 21 wasn't disguised necessarily, I think beating someone up dressed as a Jedi was/is one of his fantasies. I know its one of mine.

There is the possibility that maybe Brock and 21 did this outside of Sphinx. I know Sphinx was already putting Monstroso on their "to do list", but I think Brock and 21 just took it on completely by themselves just for fun.

Yea, I think the Jedi outfit was just for "effect". I thought Shore Leave said that Brock was taking care of Monstroso, in which case it was SPHINX sanctioned. Since SPHINX seems to be devoid of ties to any governing bodies though, they could ostensibly wear whatever they want while taking down dangerous would-be villains.
This brings up another point though - if SPHINX doesn't deal with Guild operatives than how can they legitimately go after Monstroso in the first place. Are they only worried about the situation because of their use of the Venture compound or could it be more complex than that?

Neither of them could kill Monstroso as part of their legitimate jobs; that's the point. 21 couldn't be a henchmen and Brock couldn't be a SPHINX operative, they were just a couple of guys killing another guy.

I agree with pretty much everyone in that this is a perfect ending to the first half of the season, nicely wrapping up some of the stuff posed in the season premier while offering appropriate cliff-hangers leading into season 4.2. Strangely this felt more like a Jackson episode than one penned by Doc and I was slightly surprised to find that the latter was responsible but that is really neither here nor there.
The biggest plot point/story thread that continues to intrigue me is Hunter's involvement with the Blackhearts. He became a woman (and subsequently a man again) ostensibly to through the OSI off his trail (and avoid murder at the hands of Brock) but was his alignment with Molotov and elaborate set-up of Brock just a really convoluted way to get Samson to leave the Ventures, seek revenge and eventually be lured into joining SPHINX? It could be, but it seems as if less extreme measures could have been implemented to achieve the same result. Perhaps the Blackhearts have more of a role to play and we will learn more of Hunter's motivation in 4.2 or perhaps not. Just speculating here.

At last, someone says it plain -- fanboys and girls, Moff's Law:

Of all the varieties of irritating comment out there, the absolute most annoying has to be “Why can’t you just watch the movie for what it is??? Why can’t you just enjoy it? Why do you have to analyze it???”

If you have posted such a comment, or if you are about to post such a comment, here or anywhere else, let me just advise you: Shut up. Shut the fuck up. Shut your goddamn fucking mouth. SHUT. UP.

First of all, when we analyze art, when we look for deeper meaning in it, we are enjoying it for what it is. Because that is one of the things about art, be it highbrow, lowbrow, mainstream, or avant-garde: Some sort of thought went into its making — even if the thought was, “I’m going to do this as thoughtlessly as possible”! — and as a result, some sort of thought can be gotten from its reception. That is why, among other things, artists (including, for instance, James Cameron) really like to talk about their work.

Now, that doesn’t mean you have to think about a work of art. I don’t know anyone who thinks every work they encounter ought to only be enjoyed through conscious, active analysis — or if I do, they’re pretty annoying themselves. And I know many people who prefer not to think about much of what they consume, and with them I have no argument. I also have no argument with people who disagree with another person’s thoughts about a work of art. That should go without saying. Finally, this should also go without saying, but since it apparently doesn’t: Believe me, the person who is annoying you so much by thinking about the art? They have already considered your revolutionary “just enjoy it” strategy, because it is not actually revolutionary at all. It is the default state for most of humanity.

So when you go out of your way to suggest that people should be thinking less — that not using one’s capacity for reason is an admirable position to take, and one that should be actively advocated — you are not saying anything particularly intelligent. And unless you live on a parallel version of Earth where too many people are thinking too deeply and critically about the world around them and what’s going on in their own heads, you’re not helping anything; on the contrary, you’re acting as an advocate for entropy.

And most annoyingly of all, you’re contributing to the fucking conversation yourselves when you make your stupid, stupid comments. You are basically saying, “I think people shouldn’t think so much and share their thoughts, that’s my thought that I have to share.” If you really think people should just enjoy the movie without thinking about it, then why the fuck did you (1) click on the post in the first place, and (2) bother to leave a comment? If it bugs you so much, GO WATCH A GODDAMN FUNNY CAT VIDEO.

Great Site! Just found your site after years of watching the Venture Brothers. Thank you very much to Mike for taking the time to provide summaries and for annotating the episodes.
Some comments for Pinstripes and Poltergeists and earlier episodes
"HENCHMAN 21
That's amazing- I should tell everybody, people need to know about this!

HENCHMAN 24
Oh, definitely! Maybe you should write it all down on a golden plate. Or maybe get some aviators and a compound in Diana."

These maybe reference to the theology of the Mormons or Latter Day Saints, the golden plates are a book of bound and engraved metal plates that Joseph Smith Jr. claims was the source for the Book of Mormon.

The two references to aviator glasses and a compound in Guyana (not Diana) point to the Jim Jones founded Peoples Temple movement which committed mass suicide in 1978 in their compound located in Jonestown Guyana. They drank cyanide laced kool-aid. Jones has several well known pictures of him sporting large aviator glasses.

OT: In Season Two, Viva los Muertos, the character of Ted maybe more than just a rhyme with Fred of the Scooby Doo gang. As you pointed out, the other characters in the gang all are named after serial killers/notorious villains. Ted Bundy was a charismatic serial killer and may be the inspiration for the name.

Dr. Orpheus and his situation with his wife running off to live in the underworld may be a play on the Greek myth of Orpheus whose wife Eurydice died and was trapped in the underworld. Orpheus journeyed down there and tried to win her freedom and nearly succeeds but at the last moment fails.

This entire situation could have been prevented had Dr. Mrs. gone with the Monarch to meet with Monstroso. She is so much more on the ball than he is, and he is so obsessed with taking down Venture that he glosses over important details. It seemed like the two had been planning/discussing how to team up for a while, but Dr. Mrs. knew nothing of the situation until it was too late. She knew that Monstroso was king of the double cross, yet she let the Monarch go into the lion's den, all naive and without ammunition/protection/knowledge. However, the resulting awesomeness that is this episode was worth that weakly developed lead-in.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
