Season Three DVD/Blu-Ray/Soundtrack Discussion!

Discussion threads make a comeback in '09 for one night only! Well, until season four starts at least. At any rate, if you've got something to say about the just-released season three DVD and/or Blu-Ray or the soundtrack CD/vinyl then here's the place to say it! My copies are still in the mail, though I expect my DVD to show up today. As is the norm I will also eventually be running a season three giveaway with the usual bevy of ridiculous questions. So stay tuned for that!

Also since I forgot to mention it, there's a new poll up for your voting pleasure. It's in the sidebar or you can just go directly to it if that's your thing.

Update (5:55pm EST): Hey, guess what just showed up!

I got the dvd AND bluray, tried all the discs so here's what I think...

First of all, to answer my own question about the Bluray soundtrack, all the episodes are on one bluray disc, and it comes with the JG Thirwell cd as its second disc, inside the bluray case.

Boxes & Menus: The DVD is a bit better in that it's box is not the basic plastic blue Bluray fare, so there's a bit more art and writing. As for the menus, the DVD is much better. There are these little 8-bit animations in the menus, and so since the Bluray is one self-contained menu on one self-contained disc, it only has one of these 8-bit animations. The DVD has a bunch on both discs since there's all the sub-menus.

Picture: The Bluray is much better. It's way brighter and prettier, whereas the DVD is a bit blurrier and darker. This is the first time I've had both a DVD and Bluray of the same thing, and I can definately say there's a difference.

Penises: I'm not gonna lie, it's a little weird.

I knew this was going to be a great set but what turned it from great to impossibly awesome was on the back of the box- 'the sturmiest, most drangful season yet'. That one phrase filled me with a happiness I could not have foreseen.

I hereby change my assessment from impossibly awesome to f'ing incredible! Everything about it exceeds my already high expectations. Menu screens, deleted scenes, commentaries, everything. Only quibble is the interior packaging. I understand that it's supposed to be Doc and Brock and the boys but none of them look even close to their animated counterparts. Unless that's the point, in which case great job again guys.

If you're old enough to remember any video game advertisements from back in the Atari days, that's the way they always looked. It looks like Sinterniklaas is Dean in the photo, so it might be all the voice actors playing their characters, which might be why they don't look too much like the cartoon.

I wish that photograph was a little clearer. I'd like to see what kind of console they're playing, it doesn't look like an Atari 2600. Those joysticks look pretty odd too.

I'm a bit bummed that there aren't any weird extras on the DVD. I know they warned us ahead of time, but I was hoping they'd whip something up after all, or at least throw on some of the Adultswim.com convention footage.

Nah, those are all people from Atlanta I believe. I recall there being a Craigslist ad many months ago looking for people who resembled VB characters to pose for a picture for the DVD (for no pay, haha). You're correct about them spoofing an old Atari ad though. That's pretty amusing, I didn't even think of that until you mentioned it.

What happened to that alternate intro or whatever they were calling it that was on AdultSwim.com for The Family that Slays Together...? I thought it would actually be edited into the episode and if not at least included as a deleted scene.

Yeah, the alt intro is missing, that really sucks. The lack of another cheesy-awesome ~tour of the astro-base~ type video (or similar special feature) is also a little disappointing, but other than that, great set!

I haven't decided. On one hand, it's pretty cool to have the Bluray, completely uncompromised by black bars on the sides, missing picture quality, and censorship. On the other hand, I feel a lot less comfortable watching it with my family around.
On one hand, they don't censor stupid things like "god damnit". On the other, I never realised they censored words like that so when Hunter says "It's a small car [bleep]-damnit!", I always imagined he was using some awesome made-up swear word like "fuck-damnit".
On one hand, there are a lot of cartoon penises, which I find really weird. On the other hand, they threw in some Dr. Girlfriend nudity, which, since they're doing nudity anyway, kinda balances it out at least.

Yeah. I'd say that the censoring lets my imagination run wilder with what they're doing and saying but still, it's nice to have a point of reference. If I had to choose though, I'd probably still pick uncensored. It's an interesting experience I can't get on TV.

Anybody else just rediculousely dissapointed that there aren't any special features? We don't even get the Video commentary from the AS website. I mean, I knew they said there wasn't much, but Even just a home video of a Handicam on a tripod recording a writing session wouldn't have been out of place with Astrobase-Go!
I dunno' I just feel let down.

Finally- my pre-order from Amazon just arrived. The box art is just amazing. Jackson and Doc take such care and precision in their geekdom, and it makes me proud to be a part of it. So after watching all the commentary on the episodes...I was amused at Doc and Jackson's joke about setting up one of the Sharks from Family That Slays Together Pt. 1 as a potential character.

But, that got me thinking...that be awesome. For some reason I picture the shark in a trenchcoat and playing with cards in one of his fins. Yes, I'm giving a f'n shark objects associated with the comicbook character Gambit.

Did anyone think of anything from the commentaries? Did anyone like or dislike them?

I thought they were good. They didn't talk as much about the episodes as I had hoped and Disc 2 can't do commentary and closed captioning (I like to be able to follow along with the episode) but they were entertaining and informative anyway. Also, they seemed to hit on a lot of the stuff we talked about in the episode discussions.

On a side note, I was thinking about the nudity and language. It's actually pretty tame compared to a lot of what one might see on other uncensored DVDs. I mean, most of it is brief and it isn't really sexualized in any way.

Yeah I kind of agree. I don't find the cursing or dongs to be offensive at all, I just feel like the mystery a bleep or black censor bar somehow creates (even though we know what's behind both) makes a line or scene funnier. Like that scene towards the end of Now Museum, Now You Don't! where Brock goes "Get the fuck out of here!" It somehow way more hilarious with the bleep. I certainly appreciate it being uncensored but I can't say I'm really upset that season 1 & 2 are still censored. Ah well, still awesome.

I'll put my thoughts on the nudity this way:

Before going to see the Watchmen film, I'd heard lots of talk about Dr. Manhattan's blue penis being all over the place. When I saw the film, I barely noticed it. But in Season Three, there were multiple occasions when I thought, "Damn, there are a lot of animated penises in this show."

Also, I hate to think how many pause buttons will be worn out on DMtM's nipple slip.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
