Showdown at Cremation Creek, Discussion, Part I
Edit Again: So apparently the plane carrying the tape of this episode was struck by lightning and diverted to another airport which is why it didn't make it to Atlanta in time to be put on the Fix. It should still air on Sunday night though. Jackson said so. Thanks to all the crazy kids in the comments for pointing that out.
Edit: Okay, apparently this episode isn't on the Fix this week, so you'll just have to wait until Sunday to see it. I have no idea why, but them's the breaks I guess.
Well folks, the season is nearly over. It's been a long, strange trip, but overall it's been good times. I think you'll agree with me that the overall quality of this season has been amazing, and pretty much everything from writing to animation has been awesome. I think we owe a nice round of applause to all the folks who have made the show worth watching. That is to say everyone involved in it, from inception right down to the guy who presses the button to make it air.
And of course this is your discussion article for part one of the season finale, Showdown at Cremation Creek. As always, comments will contain spoilers, and since this episode will probably end on a cliffhanger, you may want to avoid it until you've watched the episode either on the Fix or Sunday night on AS. Enjoy!

i'm going home for canadian thanksgiving, and was looking forward to being able to watch it online as it aired and actually being able to participate in the discussion as it happened.

Dude . . . it'll be like what our forefathers had to endure. Waiting an entire week before their favorite radio broadcasted serial aired again . . . maddening. But, ch'know, I'd rather have the suspense. It'll probably be a year before the guys can scrape together a third season. I admire them.

OK, the [as] boards are saying that there were technical issues, more specifically that the plane carrying the tapes was struck by lightning (no, I'm not kidding), and the tapes couldn't be put up in time for the Fix.
Hopefully the episode will air this Sunday as planned (it should), but honestly, this totally messes up my evening, as things have just sucked today, and I only really had VB to look forward to, and now I have to wait another couple of days. DAMN IT. Oct. 7, 2006, 2:44am

On the [adultswim] message board "AssProd" (he's a SwimInsider) said this:
"Jackson, Doc and the rest of the Venture crew have been working their butts off to make the broadcast deadlines alone, but due to technical setbacks on their end, they haven't been able to get us the tapes in time for the Fix."

This is a total bummer for me too, but on the upshot this is the first Sunday night that I don't have to work in like months, so I think I was destined to see this episode on TV.
Also, I can't stay upset... after all, V.E.N. is playing, and I don't think it's possible to see THAT too many times. Oct. 7, 2006, 2:32pm

Jesus titty-fucking Christ, would you babies like some cheese with all this whine?
All this meaningless babble over nothing - I can only imagine what you'll say when you actually have something to talk about!!
I'm sure it will be something brilliantly witty like 'fuck shit motherfucker fuck!' Oct. 7, 2006, 11:24pm

there's a difference between bitching, and the pointing out of bitching.
personally, i'll bitch cause i don't get cartoon network at all anyways, and had wanted to watch it as soon as i could, cause i'm a nerd.
now i have to wait untill either a torrent is up or someone uploads it to youtube, which is lame. Oct. 8, 2006, 7:57pm

Well it's certainly better than still living in your parent's basement.
All this whining reminds me of my ex-girlfriend - she was a whiny, needy bitch too. It was always about her and her problems - I remember the last time we were together, it was the same old story: "Help ME! Put ME out! I'M on fire!"
Hey bitch, what about MY needs??? Oct. 9, 2006, 2:05am

Don't forget our ace in the hole...DEAN is in the control room! Plus, Orpheus is aware of the danger and the Triad is on the march.
Ok, do we start a countdown until the next season yet? Will there be another Xmas Special? How about a Thanksgiving Blowout? A New Year's White Sale? Oct. 9, 2006, 4:59am

Definitely made up for last week's acid trip. Loved the Residents reference and the Rick Springfield song lyrics hurt. I guess Sgt. Hatred is a real perv. Was Brock's line to Bowie about "Berlin" referring to Bowie's album produced by Brian Eno with Robert Fripp? A few more Star Wars references thrown in? GREAT episode!

No doubt! With Dean in the engine room and Dr. O getting the message about something bad happening, shit! you know there's gonna be some bad things a happenin. Kinda wondering if we're gonna see Dr. Killinger open up a can of whoop ass, wait, i mean a BAG of whoop ass (magic murder bag). Shit! with all those villians in the same room, there's gonna be some carnage! This may be the last we see of the Phantom Limb.
There's no way the VB story line ends here. I mean, this will even bring more tension between the Monarch and Dr. V. Oct. 9, 2006, 8:04am

Well, not necessarily because of that. It could just be an awesome-sounding title like Turtle Bay and Spider-Skull Island. Cremation Creek is a real place in the Grand Canyon, where we know by now the cocoon is often cleverly hidden in plain view.
But I think between the engine room printouts and the surrounding choppers, yeah, you're probably right on the immenent immolation. Oct. 10, 2006, 1:18am

Awwwww shit, I can't wait for part 2. This episode was off-the-motherfuckin-hook. The henchmen finally capture Team Venture for The Monarch at the one time he doesn't want them, Phantom Limb kills almost all of the imprisoned villans (and that fetus torso guy), Dr.Venture finally figures out who "Charlene" was, Phantom Limb loses his mind over Dr. Girlfriend (like I knew he would). I knew he wasn't going to take that shit lyin' down. Ever wish you had a time machine so you could skip the next week and go straight into part 2????? Fuck I wish I do. I can only Imagine what's goin down in part 2. I told ya'll motherfuckers some serious shit was goin' down in these two episodes and I think I've proved my point. FUCK THIS NEXT WEEK, I WANT PART 2 DAMMIT!!! P.S. FUCK IGN!! That top 25 animated list was fuckin' bullshit!!! The Venture Bros. at #19???? All of the 18 shows above it all suck dick when compared to this show. SOUTH PARK?,SIMPSONS?,FAMILY GUY?, SPONGEBOB?,POWERPUFF GIRLS?,DEXTER'S LABORTORY?. All of these shows fuckin' suck and IGN is ran by a bunch fuckin' retarded-ass, bitch-ass, faggot-ass, pussies. That was Fuckin' insulting to this show...............................

This semi-underground show has only been out for ALMOST 2 seasons, and a lot of the shows on that list have been around for a while, or were very popular in their day. Venture Brothers was NOT going to break the top 5, I'm just glad it's there at all. As for South Park, it belongs in the top 3, and so does Simpsons, if just for what it did for the shows that followed.

Things I loved about this episode:
--Nien Nunb. Coming to life from a fucking Star Wars collectable card game card.
--Hank's classic pilot henchman suit.
--Dean in the henchmen cowl (super cute), and Dean actually being the smart one.
--21's "Venture Bros" skull T-shirt.
--ICARUS!
--The Land O Lakes girl aka Princess Littlefeet (finally, just like Klaus--and was that Iggy Pop?).
--Dr Fiancee.
--24 feeling Monarch's super-annoying voice in his eyes.
--The whole thing with the Order of the Triad.
--BOWIE!
And Dr Girlfriend has a VERY good reason to hate Venture now. I don't think she'll let Monarch give it up after this. Oct. 9, 2006, 5:57am

- Yes that was Iggy
- I thought the 'Princess' was a pastiche of the Land O'Lakes maiden and 'Sacheen Littlefeather', hence 'Tinyfoot' - but that may just be me.
- Hank as the Russian meeting Sgt. Hatred may also be based on Gen. Patton's storied hatred of the Russian Allies during WWII, the Sgt. is pretty obviously a takeoff of Patton. But once again, that may just be me.
- What WAS that puppet (oops maquette) that Hank took the goatee off of? Oct. 9, 2006, 6:10am

hmm...that puppet. 21 said it's name when he and hank were fighting with it. i forget it's name, but it was this lame, bald puppet from the late-70s/early-80s, which came with a bunch of disguises. including beards and glasses and hats and (i think) wigs. minutes of fun. lame, totally lame, stephen hawking lame.

Brock tattooing that one "casualty's" face was awesome. The drunk henchmen were hilarious. 24 being a bad chaperone for Dean is going to prove to be eventful. Hank was funny as hell. I couldn't believe the whole "Charlene" disguise came back. The death of Tiny Attorney was cold blooded animated perfection. The Guild Sovereign was awesome and I hope to see more of him next episode.
I know as a villain Monarch would be inviting other Guild members to his wedding ... but we was in college with Pete White and Underbheit too, where are they?! They can't end the season without a bit of depressed, dethroned Underbheit, or Pete & Billy Quizboy!

Two words on the Charlene thing: Being thorough.
The drunk henchmen were just another huge nail in the coffin of awesomeness that was this episode. I am so loving their bigger parts throughout this season. Some of the best lines and best voices. 21 and 24 have *made* this season, without a doubt. I really sympathize with the guys, though. They finally do things right and it comes at the worst possible times. Oct. 9, 2006, 8:36am

How's this for a plot twist for the conclusion: Underbheit, still looking for a place to crash after being turned away by the Monarch, wound up at the home of an ex-college roommate, none other than Peter White. He, White, and Billy are traveling to the Wedding together when they discover that it's under siege. They band with the Order of the Triad to rescue the entire party... except, unfortunately, Hank and Dean, who perish after consuming bad shrimp cocktail.

that would actually be amazing. nice work - the triad part is obvious, but that would be an awesome way not only to work those other characters in there, but to have baron, monarch, venture clan, and white/quizboy all working together. i love the dynamic of dr. venture being forced to be friends w/ monarch and vice versa - i hope they continue this dynamic for a while.

BTW, in the melee in the tattoo parlor, Brock Samson tore the jaw off one of the minions and used it as a weapon - just as the Biblical Samson used the jawbone of an ass to slay the Philistines! It's hard to see, goes by very fast so you'll have to use slo-mo to see it.

I think that Bowie should have shown up with his panda, Li-Li; but showing up with Iggy Pop and Klaus Nomi was so cool! even though there were a few characters not on this episode(Under-bheit and Pete and Billy) I was more bummed that Triana didn't get some mention. I mean, she could still be on Orpheus Island for all we know.
Friggin' great episode though! Too much extra good stuff to mention. Well worth the wait.

He is a flaming retard on a swing if he thinks that anything good can come of the assault on the canoon.

I don't think Limb cares at this point. He was blasting supervillians away in the begining just to try to scare the Monarch! I mean, he loses his girlfriend to the Monarch (someone he considers vastly inferior to himself) and the Guild denies his request to go after him. And if he does off everyone in the Cocoon, wouldn't he be the head of the Guild, seeing as how he's the 2nd highest ranking member?

Okay let me get the timeline right...
Dr. Girlfriend, in V.E.N. was alluded to wanting to break up w/ Phantom Limb, even saying to Kim that she wanted "to go solo because she'd had it up to here with men,". Was next seen in her Lady Au Par costume, muppets in tow auditioning for Dr. O and posse, which implied that she had struck out on her own. But, she was really w/ Phantom Limb the whole time and cheating on him w/ The Monarch. Next, she forces the Monarch to marry her by making underhand ultamatiums?
What the hell, yeah it did make more sense of "I know why the caged bird kills"...
At first I thought the lack of strong, independant female characters an excellent parody of misogynistic 60's and 70's cartoons. Now, I'm thinking codependant Barbie in retro-cool Jackie Kennedy costume is still codependant Barbie.
Also how is the Monarch going to explain to Dr. Venture about all the prostitutes he'd been killing? Oct. 9, 2006, 4:18pm

THANK YOU for the news about the third season getting the greenlight. Those couple of posts last night about this being the last season made me nauseous and sweaty!
There must be at least five seasons worth of storyline here (if not more!). And if future seasons are anything like this season, not letting this show go forward would be criminal! Oct. 10, 2006, 12:51am

That's exactly right. He also touched Hank and Dean inappropriately (but Dean doesn't remember it because he was passed out from the Jesus jui--*ahem*wine) as mentioned in "Caged Bird Kills", which is why Hank pretends to be Russian Guyovich. GOD, I love this writing team. . . .

a lot going on here - so i'm sorry if i'm repeating what's already been said - but if you're in the same boat as I am (no cable; check out the show on the fix) rejoice in knowing that it has been added to the fix lineup.
What an amazing episode, start to finish! I can only imagine the finale will be balls-to-the-walls action.
As much as i would not like to see the show drift into spin-off territory, i could totally get into 30 minutes (well, 22) of the Order of the Triad doing their own thing week after week. Dana Snyder was hillarious.
I do hope what someone suggested about Underbheitt, Billy, and Pete White making the scene comes about...if not exactly in that way.
I get pretty tired of people bitching about continuity lapses, but one thing that did strike me right away was the lack of follow-through with the situation when Underbheit shows up at the Coccoon...I don't think Jackson would leave something like that hanging, so maybe we'll get a flashback of what he's been up to of late after the temporary shack-up with the Monarch (come on, noone thinks the Monarch would actually turn him away, do they?)
Anyway, it would be cool if they could find a way to include these three, as they are the last of some very cool major characters to not appear in this final situation yet...oh wait a minute, there's Jonas Jr., the Impossibles...never mind.
On one last note, regarding the people's comments on the series coming to an end, you might know this guy named Jackson Publick (the creator of the show)? He has a livejournal thing going, and comments have always seemed very positive about keeping things going into a next season.
I don't see anything about this current situation that would indicate an end to the Venture saga, though i do suspect some major shit will go down. Oct. 10, 2006, 6:08am

I certainly hope you are right.
I think that a strong showing in the rating for last night's episode, since it was the only one not to be previewed on the fix, would pretty much cement the 3rd season. I hope all those with niekson boxes tuned in, and that those without boxes broke into ther houses of people with boxes who happened to be out of town. Oct. 10, 2006, 6:11am

what really needs to happen is some sort of situation where people realize that all of us "cool dudes" on the internet are a huge market, and that the fix is a brilliant idea, and that even though a show might not have a huge teevee audience that enough of us watching online could totally keep a show alice.

Re: Underbheit at the Cocoon.
First off the Monarch and Underbheit don't really like each other. They formed a temporary alliance to take down Dr. Venture but other than that they're not really friends. The Monarch probably told him to get lost.
Plus it was in all likelyhood a throw-away joke that would just make the ending of the episode funny. The Baron showing up at the Cocoon to crash on the Monarch's couch? Good stuff, but ultimately just something there for the funnies. Oct. 10, 2006, 5:45pm

Watching it again on the fix, still compiling a list of things to bring up, but one that I will probably forget:
We have another confirmation for the Myra's Caged Bird timeline: As Rusty was reminding Dr. Girlfriend about Charlene he says "only the finest woman in 18 years to steal my heart".
Myra said the boys were 18, meaning she and Rusty buggered 18 years ago. And she was pretty friggen fine. Tah Dah!

Phantom Limb said he used legal means to get them out of jail. King Gorilla, last we saw him, was helping The Monarch escape, and was going to hold off the pursuing prison guards long enough for The Monarch to get away. Given that, KG is probably in solitary lockup for a long time, and therefore was beyond the reach of PL's legal "help", and thus KG escaped PL's "Deadliest Game" hunting party.

I'd like the Monarch and Dr. Venture end up being occasional allies, like Magneto and the X-Men.
Watching the episode again, it struck me how calm the Monarch was during Phantom Limb's hunting scene. The Monarch doesn't get intimidated by him shooting all his prison buddies too much. He stayed very cool. It shows how ruthless the Monarch is.
Dean was a little girly in this episode. He's got the scientific curiosity and all, but he came across a little effeminate. Oct. 13, 2006, 9:32pm
