An Update... From the Past!
Okay it's like 1:10am right now, and I promised an update today, and it's not today, so I'm just going to fudge it and change the date to be 11:59pm so I don't look like a liar. I didn't need to explain that, but like I said it's 1:10am so I don't need to think things out.
First off the Powerless in the Face of Death capsule and notes are up. So if you want to read about the episode instead of watching it, or need some of the references and/or jokes explained to you, head over there. Second off, I should mention that another two episode names have been revealed thanks to TV Guide. Episode 18 (airing fourth) is called 'Love-Bheits' (I assume that will have something to do with Baron Underbheit) and episode 17 which will air after 18, is called 'Escape to the House of Mummies'. Why one would want to escape to a house of mummies instead of from one we'll just have to find out, but I wager we may yet see Brock peeing on a real live (uh, are mummys even alive?) mummy. And in the end, isn't that what matters? I think so.

As mentioned earlier the reference to the use of the teleporter and its malfunction relates back to "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum, which was a remake of the original "The Fly" with Vincent Price. However, I think there might also be a reference to the "Philadelphia Experiment", where the Navy was trying to make ships invisible. As the story goes the ship being experimented on disappeared from its dock and reappeared a few hundred miles away. When the ship had reappeared there were stories of crew members who were stuck half in and out of walls and decks...much like Rusty was half in and out of the wall.

Every time I watch the clip... the more and more I am convinced. Here's the similarites:
1) Tells Brock to call him Hunter
2) Has the cigarette thingy.
3) Body size is similar
4) Asks Brock "are you ready to confront mind-blowing weirdness at every turn?" sounds like a line out of Fear and Loathing
5) Has an all-out, "gonzo" style (which was the style of reporting Thompson prefered) of training. With the jet back, and the stabbing, and the telescoping nightstick, etc...
I swear Col. Gathers is a character inspired by the late Hunter S. THompson Jun. 29, 2006, 2:52pm

Dude you don't need to cite facts, it's pretty obvious in every possible way that he's supposed to be Hunter (his name is Hunter Gathers too, which is pretty funny).
Also the scene between Brock and Race Bannon in Ice Station was originally supposed to be a flashback where Brock's mentor named Hunter (though his name was Hunter Cobb) dies, but it was cut because it was way too long. Jun. 29, 2006, 4:32pm

In the scene where Dr. Venture is recounting the ways Hank and Dean die, a giant robot busts through the wall. This robot(not the spider robot) jumps through and makes the same sound as the Rabbot in the first episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force. It may be a coincidence, but it being Williams Street maybe not.
