Slate Interview With Jackson and Doc, Plus Clips!

Going for a one-two knockout punch, Slate's culture blog, Brow Beat, has a podcast interview with Jackson Publick and Doc Hammer as well as two exclusive clips, to boot. While I won't go posting the podcast willy-nilly pretending this is the only place to get it, I have no such compunctions about the clips, so here they are. These are probably spoilers to some, so be warned! Enjoy:

Check out the full article to listen to the podcast, or you can head directly over to Soundcloud if you prefer. "Bot Seeks Bot" airs this Sunday at midnight.

A "Wacky Races" reference. And more specifically, a reference to Dick Dastardly and his dog, Muttley. I love it.

Hahahahaha. I've been looking forward to the Guild-mobile scene since the release of the season five sizzle reel, and it did not disappoint. This is going to be a great episode. We get the Council of Thirteen, Captain Sunshine, Brock and Shoreleave, and according to the last post-show bump, Headshot and Amber Gold . . . . I can't wait.

I think so. It was definitely reminiscent of a 60s sit-com theme. Thirwell has definitely earned his pay this season.

The podcast confirms season six production starts in September, and they are writing it now.

It takes 18 months to make..... so season 6 should show up Feb./March 2015!

Genuinely brilliant interview. It's always refreshing to hear Doc and Jackson discuss the heftier intellectual and thematic elements of the show as opposed to just "Who's gonna show up this season?!" stuff.

Additionally, it confirms my suspicions that the last two episodes of the season are going to be tied together to create a loose sort of two parter- given that it says Doc is presumed dead by the beginning of the final episode, I'm guessing this is a result of next week's episode.

We also know that this season was going to have a Team Venture episode, which given next week's previews, is obviously going to be the Season finale, but I think Hank and Dean are going to be sent to live with the Action Man and Colonel Gentlemen respectively. We've already seen Hank in Shallow Gravy garb with the Action Man, and the interview noted that Colonel Gentlemen gets introspective in the last episode- has there been a more introspective character this whole season than Dean?

The guy that looks like a Venchman and talks like a robot is named Vendata!

Vendata...Pure speculation here, but I'm thinking a creation of Jonas Venture Sr. that turned evil. Maybe?

More likely a combination of vendetta and data, but that's a possibilty too.

Definitely looks like the Blue Venture "V" on his helmet. Really hope we get his backstory.

So is it Ven-dat-ta or Ven-day-ta?

Best shout out loud bit during the Slate interview was Doc's reveal on his thoughts on Game of Thrones; YES, totally agree on that one!

Right, before the episode airs, here are my guesses as to who is in the Council, in some cases based on the silhouettes visible in previous episodes.

I've got 11 I'm sure of, plus one I'm not so sure of.

The Clue Clown (deceased)
Red Mantle
Dragoon
Dr Zin
Steppenwolf
The Samurai/insect guy next to Steppenwolf in the car
Vendata (where'd you find the name out, or was it just a guess?)
Wild Fop
The eyepatch guy in the spiky gold helmet who has Doc and Billy lashed to the wheel of misfortune (which appears to be this episode)
Mommy Longlegs
The Mexican bandit guy from crowd scenes (notably helping repair the Cocoon in Shadowman 9) <not so likely due to the timeframe he'd have to travel from the trial>/the minister from the funeral

Thanks, I haven't seen that particular preview yet.

Can I just add that something about the character Steppenwolf is just brilliant? I don't even know what it is, I guess I like that he's got the sort of suave gentlemanly thing going on with the jacket and scarf and the voice. Very old-school.

I love the design, especially since he began life as the silhouette of Half Jackal turned into a full jackal. And although his voice and demeanor are not at all what I expected from the preview, I think he's great. In my mind, he would have been sort of hyper or manic, but this is much, much better.

I very much doubt any of those are, but yes, I expect Flying Squid will be one of them too. He's only got the next two episodes in which to appear.

It occurred to me that the only guys in the Doom Buggy who we don't know for sure are Councillors are Phage and the brain-in-a-jar guy. If the latter is one of the 13, maybe Phage is in line to join the Council next?
  • 2
Jul. 9, 2013, 1:55pm
Why not? I'm all for Bill Hader doing everything. His voices are always similar, but he brings something great to every line reading. I've loved him as Phage, Headshot, and of course Professor Impossible. So I would welcome Phage as a council member.

And I love that Steppenwolf's car is called the "Doom Buggy." Ridiculous in the best possible way.

"A-n-y-b-o-d-y? Does that mean that The Monarch has a shot at the promotion? Could that mean if The Monarch wanted the promotion he might do something radical like KILL DOCTOR VENTURE? - and thus provide the continuity between these last two eipsodes?

He's still looked upon as a second rate villain by most of the other members of The Guild and he was arching Dr. Venture without guild consent for many years so that would be a tough hill to climb.

Looks like you were right, and the Sovereign is the final Councilman, I'm beginning to think the bandito guy is the Monsignor from the funeral though - every other speaking Councilman had a voice credit except for Wild Fop this episode, and Councilman 11 was voiced by Paget Brewster, who must surely be Mommy Longlegs, whose photo was the 11th on O.S.I.'s chart.

And the pudgy guy was The Nerve.

just listened to the interview. excellent. sounds like they were pretty fond of the last 2 episodes. i'm so excited to see them, but i can't believe venture time almost over for this round:( i get more anxious with each break they take between seasons. judging by the interviewers tone, and the way the series flows for that matter, i bet we're going to be left dangling by the end of this. i sense one hell of a cliffhanger coming

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
