(Someone Else) Live From Toy Fair
As some of you may or may not know, Toy Fair 2010 is currently underway in New York for the next four days (show runs from the 14th until the 17th). Among other stuff the Bif Bang Pow! guys along with their partner for this particular venture (teehee), EMCE Toys, are showcasing their new MEGO-style Venture Bros. toys. A few random shots have trickled in, and I'll have more (hopefully high-quality ones) as they appear. Until then enjoy these shots. Click on them to see the larger version at their origin.

Bif, your action figures... woof.
I'm into the retro MEGO feel, but these seem horribly off model in terms of proportion, sculpt and color. The Monarch and Co's gaunlets are huge while the wings are undersized, the colors are off on Dean's outfit and Brock's head looks ridiculous. Hopefully these protos were just put together on the fly (it's not uncommon to see prototypes with wet paint and glued together parts at these things) and are not representative of the final product. I keep staring at Brock and obsessing over how much I don't like it. My biggest issue is that no human being is shaped like that, First, his head is way too big for his body. The average person is 7 and a half heads tall, and that Brock is barely 5. His shoulders need to be wider, and his arms need to be much longer. No one has arms so short that their fingers are in line with their crotch. A normal person usually has their wrist line fall right below the crotch line.
I realize we are discussing a 2D cartoon character, but even Brock, who is drawn comically chiseled, still has human proportions. If you've ever read Matt Jenkins' blog or seen posts by any of the other illustrators on the show, you know how important scale and proportion are when it comes to doing character models. I think the only thing that's totally spot on is Brock's hair though. Check the profile, http://www.megomuseum.com/remego/bbp/toyfair/brock2.jpg

Ugh. I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed in these. For the most part, besides Brock, I enjoy the heads but my god the bodies are so horribly off. I absolutely hate the real material cloths. Am I the only one who is pissed that these are going to be dolls and not action figures?

Not the only one. I'm disappointed that the company got all excited about Megos at the last moment, too. And I suspect BifBangPow will go out of business because of this decision.
You take all the people who like Venture Bros -- let's say a million people. Then you take all the people who like Megos -- let's say a thousand people. Combine Venture Bros and Mego, and what do you get in terms of sales? A thousand people.
It was a dumb decision. Feb. 15, 2010, 2:08am

Hmm. I agree that these aren't great, and I've been a bit skeptical since browsing through their other action figures (the doll style isn't great and that's reflected here), but I really like Rusty and the Monarch, and the big sign that says NOT FINAL PRODUCT leaves me optimistic; I assume they'll go through significant changes in the next few months.

I see what they are doing on the faces -- they're using extremely sharp contours on the faces as a way of emulating the drawn lines that exist on the cartoon versions. Their other option would have been to go with smoother, more human-like contours. I think BifBangPow was brave to go with the sharp contours. But it's not how I would have gone.

See, I was so right about these. I am sad that they look so bad.
Look at this http://merkaba998.deviantart.com/art/Brock-Samson-with-V-logo-base-132658130 VS. this http://www.megomuseum.com/remego/brock.shtml I know they are trying to capture the "70's feel" but isn't it more important to capture the character first? There's bunch of fan-made scuptures and action figures that look way better than all of these put together in a ball and covered in gold and diamonds. Feb. 15, 2010, 2:49am

Plus, the Venture Bros was inspired in part by the Johnny Quest era (mid 1960s), and partly by the 00s.
The Venture Bros never had anything to do with the 70s (the era of Mego). Aside from Brock's mustang.
Combining 1960s and 2000s and coming up with the 1970s was a flawed equation from the get-go. Feb. 15, 2010, 3:16am

Okay that Brock statue you linked is also ridiculously off model. Brock has never been portrayed with that degree of muscle or a torso that massive. The proportions on the figure are actually way more accurate aside from the size of his head.
The figure has its own issues of course but a lot of it centers around how baggy the clothes are, which is not a look Brock ever has. Feb. 15, 2010, 4:08am

Good lord, these are beyond horrid. I have an enormous toy collection, and adore VB, but I would never, ever buy these. The proportions are ridiculously off and the fabric is baggy. WHY would you have fabric on Monarch and the Henchmen when they wear skin-hugging suits??
I thought I would buy anything VB & toy related--how could you screw up such an amazing property?--but I was wrong. At least the creators will have the toys they want? I'll just go back to loving the show by itself. Feb. 15, 2010, 4:43am
