Just to continue the commentary from the other discussion board, it's probably true that "The Rusty Venture Show" is either a cartoon or a live action series that was created to make everyone think that the Guild was just a made up fantasy. But if Johnny Quest's currently life is any indication, Rusty is relatively doing better in his adult life after years of being a boy adventurer. He even says so himself.

I just wanted to throw in a funny sidebar worth mentioning. My friend is hearing impaired, so we always end up watching the Venture Brothers close captioned when it's on. Some pretty funny stuff pops up when things are mistyped by the captioners, in this case Hunter mentioning - according to the captions that the "Build-a-Bear" group (as compared to the Bilderberg Group) was responsible for the fall of the Berlin Wall. I always knew those loveable cotton-filled fluffballs were up to no good.

Speaking of captions - could anyone transcribe the lyrics to the OSI theme song? There are some parts I can't make out, and haven't seen it discussed anywhere. My best guess:
OSI, We're fighting for freedom and the little guy
OSI, We're [tearing?] people in the sky
When it's time to start the war
You'll hear our mighty engines roar
A super army of super spies
Look out Sphinx, and [??] guy
OSI, We'll shatter your skull and make your children cry
OSI, [??] come and defend the sky
OSI, Mass destruction comes your way Jun. 18, 2008, 5:13am

You've got most of it right, but I heard some of it a little differently.
OSI, We're fighting for freedom and the little guy
OSI, We'll tear a new hole in the sky
When it's time to start the war
You'll hear our mighty engines roar

Yeah, my best guess would be around five years between those two events. I think it's pretty clear her obsession with Doc made her totally unstable and she just became a complete wreck, and then when the boys were born (weather or not they are hers) it probably just totally pushed her over the edge.

Just a note for your capsule transcript, that unintelligible Hunter line (from where he's ranting to Billy) is the word "boychick", which is yiddish for "young man" or "boy." I think the first place I saw it was in the later pages of comments in Jackson's Invisible Hand entry but I can't recall.

Just some Jackson responses you don't have mentioned in the Capsule yet:
On the voice of Haine/Hatred and his future in the season:
Brendon won't be the voice of Sgt. Hatred this season because he's in L.A., we're in New York, and the character shows up a lot more episodes. Hatred grew so much in our writing discussions that we decided it was better to have one of us (in this case, me) do the voice--saves us money, we have more control over it, and re-recording isn't a transcontinental hassle. And as you say, Brendon is busier these days with his own show. He does do a guest voice this season, however, which will be coming up in a few episodes. http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/22251.html?thread=2465515#t2465515
On the Brock/Limb convo:
"so, are they both just pretending in that convo or is this a bit of discontinuity?"
Neither answer need be true. You're assuming that Brock knows Fantamos and The Phantom Limb are the same person, or that Phantom Limb knows Brock was one of the OSI agents on his trail. All we really saw in this episode was that a botched experiment made The Phantom Limb evil. Continuity secure! http://jacksonpublick.livejournal.com/22251.html?thread=2466795#t2466795 Jun. 18, 2008, 11:01am

Something I just noticed, I think the young OSI guy who shows up after Steve Summers walks by is meant to be the OSI tester from Mid-life Chrysalis. The one that says that Brock babysat him and that General Treacter ,whoever that is, was his father. I am confident about this because the models match pretty closely and he seems very young to be OSI in "Invisible Hand" and every other person we know to have been affiliatd with OSI shows up in the episode. So you might want to check it out and put it in the capsule if you agree.

Just found this place today at work, cool stuff. Really cool stuff.
One thing that I saw mentioned briefly in the episode discussion that I feel is kinda important is that when Brock is assigned to Dr. Venture, he is sort of an outcast in OSI and is probably some what of a disgrace as well. But when we see Brock in present day, he is revered. I'm absolutely dying to know what happens between Brock's "Rusty's Blanket" assignment and his triumph that so raises his esteem in the eyes of his peers. I'm guessing his loyalty to Rusty and the boys comes out of this as well, as they obviously play a role in the story of him exposing (if that's the right word) the Guild (and probably Sgt. Hatred) and becoming a recognized hero. I also bet there are going to be some sweet action scenes and deaths to go along with part of the story.
I'd like to add how much I love that by giving us some answers, the Venture Bros. writers have given us so many more questions to ask. Jun. 19, 2008, 9:08pm

Its not OSI that revere him its regular army guys mostly. The only reverence we've seen is from the Military guys guarding the mountain that Steve Sommers was on.
In fact he was criticized heavily for his methods when retaking his "License to Kill" exam and only got his license back because he used to babysit the tester.
And In "Tag Sale! Your it" it makes sense for him to be in charge because the security for the Tag Sale would fall under Operation: Rusty's Blanket.
You could even point at the fact that they sent him to kill Col. Gathers as more of a sign that they think little of him or that he's still to this day being punished for wasting OSI's time. Jun. 19, 2008, 11:47pm

We've seen plenty of reverence from legitimate members of the Guild (Phantom Limb, Molotov Cocktease, the guy in "The Trial of the Monarch" who thanks him on behalf of the Guild for not getting involved).
I haven't seen "License to Kill" in ages, but he's still revered by the guy and his father, a General. I'll take a look when I get a chance and see how I feel about.
In "Tag Sale! Your it" the second in command who briefs everyone speaks very highly of Samson, which I didn't read as simply for show because Brock was running the operation.
When he's sent to kill Col. Gathers, the guy in the limo is obviously very impressed with him. The guys on the sub, I can't remember.
In the present, the only people we've seen disrespect him are people with clear personal grudges, like the head of the Secret Service at the White House. I think it's pretty clear that Samson has a much better image and reputation in the present then he has at the end of the flashback in "The Invisible Hand of Fate". Jun. 20, 2008, 12:21am

In a upcoming episode, thanks to footage from the season 3 teaser trailer, it looks like Brock is attempting to either get out of Operation: Rusty's Blanket or find out his status in OSI where he incorrectly gives the car computer the wrong info (Not his fault, the computer is just too formal) and the computer attempts to self destruct the car with him in it.

I Think OSI does trust him and respect him now. Obviously The Guild seems to be common knowledge now. In the trial of the Monarch they talk about how the police won't interfere with guild member if they follow the guild rules. If the Local police know about it then obviously the OSI does.

Was Phantom Limb's name, "Fantomas," a reference to the French crime novel villain? http://www.fantomas-lives.com/
It would make sense because his family was referenced as a French noble family.
or to the metal band?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fant%C3%B4mas_(band)
or am I just overthinking?
Sorry if this has already been brought up, I read through and didn't see anything.
Great Capsule, as always. Jun. 20, 2008, 11:41am

Good try, but Jackson mentioned that on his LJ (in the comments). Brock only had a rat tail because they were popular in the late 80s when most of the episode was set. Brock's hair generally seems to follow whatever is in style for the time period... well, up until now I guess, unless a mullet is fashionable somewhere that I'm not aware of :/

I just noticed a couple of things about that OSI intro video. The first is that the bit where an OSI agent executes a Sphynx henchman resembles a famous photograph by Eddie Adams depicting a Viet Cong officer being executed. Another scene near the end of the segment depicting a woman lighting a cigarette while posing on a pile of naked henchmen brings to mind Lynndie England and the whole Abu Ghraib scandal.

Rusty's "zero-gravity pen" that "writes in space" was probably inspired by the real-life Fisher Space Pen, in keeping with the decades-old inventions that populate the Venture Compound.
And you can read more about it at Snopes! http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp Jun. 29, 2008, 6:12pm
