Comic Con Postmortem
So for those of you following I managed to get into NY Comic Con yesterday just in time to see the Venture Bros panel. My train to the city got in at 3:40pm and I managed to get to the Javits Center by around 3:55 or so. By 4:01 (according to my twitter feed) I was informed they were sold out of Saturday only tickets (but I could purchase a weekend pass for only $20 more), but they were attempting to get more, plus I was fifth on line so I stood a good chance of getting in. At 4:20 the extra tickets came out from where ever they were hiding and I attempted to find the proper room!
Expecting to be 20 minutes late I was actually early because apparently the line for the room had been so long they had to swap with another panel to get a bigger room. Thusly the half hour delay.
That's when the fun began! They started the panel with a preview of season three which promised to be highly anticipated, much like your junior prom. However unlike you junior prom, it will not end in total disappointment. Also you might even get some. Perhaps. It then went on to show a couple clips from upcoming episodes ranging from classic Venture Bros. conversational gags, to insane visual humor, to violent (and hilarious) battles.
From the looks of the preview we're going to get a lot more insight into Brock's past, especially his relationship with Col. Gathers when he was in training at OSI and perhaps even how (and maybe why) he was assigned Operation Rusty's Blanket (as well as a possible connection to Billy Quizboy). On top of that look for a lot more info on Dr. Venture and his relationship with his dad (both past and present) and a variety of looks inside Venture Industries that we haven't seen yet.
Or, as Jackson put it "You will learn things about the characters that you never wanted to know."
After the preview was completed they opened the floor for questions. While a lot of people didn't ask the most hard hitting questions, there were a couple interesting tidbits dropped here and there (most of which I mentioned in the feed). Doc's favorite Bowie album, for example, is Station to Station.
As far as show-spinoff news, they reconfirmed the soundtrack CD by J.G. Thirlwell (which will not contain any of the songs with lyrics since they weren't written by him). There are currently no plans for a Venture Bros. movie, but Jackson said the network was not totally unreceptive towards the idea, so perhaps it's a possibility in the future. And finally when the subject of a Venture video game came up Jackson & Doc regretfully informed the crowd that there were no plans for one at all.
As far as news on season three's production, all episodes were written by Jackson and/or Doc this time around, so there are no guest writers. Kim will not return (Doc went on a tirade about how everyone loves her so much but in the end it's only because she's hot), and neither will Mr. Brisby (Jackson's reaction when asked if he would be back was a bemused "Why?"). We will, however, see more of Myra. Also returning are Professor Impossible (no longer voiced by Stephen Colbert, unless something changes), Henry Killinger, and of course most of the main characters such as the Monarch, Dr. Girlfriend, Pete White, Billy and a variety of others. Oh, and new characters? How about Holy Diver? I don't even think we need to know any more about that character because it's pretty obvious he's going to be awesome.
There was also some random silliness going on. When posed with the question of who would win in a fight between 21 and 24, Doc and Jackson seemed to agree that 21 would win mainly due to his attitude. Magic 8-Ball was, oddly enough, inspired by the Magic 8-ball toy (yes, someone actually asked 'what was your inspiration for Magic 8-Ball?'). The moral question of weather or not the boys are still the real boys was posed, which Doc shot down, stating that a soul can fly in any vessel, regardless of how many times it has to move or the vessel built. Oh, and once again we were told that Hank is not Brock's son. At all. So stop asking. They are both Dr. Venture's sons.
Various other things happened, such as a random girl giving Mike Sinterniklaas a hug and Doc getting invited to Dr. Girlfriend and the Monarch's wedding (yes, they were dressed as Dr. Girlfriend and the Monarch, you can see them in the photos below). James Urbaniak also got to showcase his pickup line skills at the request of one fan (the only requisite that it end with 'meow'). The line? "I might be blind but I can sense you want to fuck me. Meow."
All in all we didn't learn a heck of a lot about the upcoming season, but we learned some things and definitely had a great time.
Below you can check out a couple pictures snapped by the awesome attendee only known as the mysterious 'D' who was nice enough to send them to me since I stupidly didn't bring a camera. Enjoy, and remember season three starts June 1st!

I was at the panel, and they didn't say conclusively that Kim WOULDN'T return, just that they would have to do something more with her before people would be justified in liking her. Doc suggested making her funny. :)
Oh man, it was the absolute best time I had all day. They were phenomenal. Apr. 21, 2008, 11:43am
