An interesting and more lighthearted episode than normal. It was overall pretty good.

Dr. Z and Johnny's interactions we're funny and sad, good to see them get together again.

It's been a long while since Doc Hammer wrote a Billy free episode.

Anyway, what do you think Dr. Mrs. will choose?

Only two episodes left... I believe next week will be the big snowstorm, then the finale is about the teleporter and the Peril Partnership.

In the SDCC trailer you see Rusty getting teleported to Meteor Majeure where Watch and Ward are waiting. We've haven't seen Brock go apeshit yet, or scare bear, or the bit about Hank in the hospital or running around Hatred shirtless.

I'm surprised how much footage of the final two episodes are in the trailers.

So, I guess she'll need an aspirn?

I'm not clear on why Rusty's flirting with death for some nookie. But it was nice to visit with Night Dick again. I love his narration voice and diction.

I did want to see Rocco's showdown with Sliwa.

When did Red Death become a candidate for the Council? He didn't bring in Blue Morpho. Was it because he collected Dr. Dugong?

It was fun to see all of their lame final archings.

Has Race Bannon been retconned to have red hair? Or has be been merged with Dr. Quest into a Doc Savage type of character? Funny to see Hadji race-swapped into also an Indian.

So many questions.

In the Art of The Venture Brothers book, they say they aren't allowed to use the actual Race Bannon or anything from Johnny Quest anymore, but they can parody it.

Huh . . . I thought on one of the commentaries, maybe the one from Ice Station, they learned that Comedy Central owned the rights to Johnny Quest? That is why they could use them? They then started calling him "Mr. Quest" in 12(!) to Midnight rather than "Action Johnny."

Maybe that changed?

I miss Dr. Phineas Phage! Why isn't he on the new Guild Council? Was he just absent from the meeting?

Hadji wearing Native American costume didn't make much sense...his name is Hadji and we've heard him speak in a noticeable Indian accent and wasn't he living in India when we previously met him?

They killed off Race Bannon on the show (and briefly talked to him in a flashback), so he is canonically in the VB universe, but he may not be associated with the Quest family in the VB universe (I don't remember any connection between Quest family and Race mentioned on VB). So I think Race not being in Dr. Z's flashback makes sense.

I also really loved all the vanilla arching all the characters did...I just wish we saw more of Dr. Venture's 'date'.

@hardyworld: they killed off Race in present time during the Ice Station--the GOLIATH SERUM!!!--episode. Johnny, at the time, is 40ish and tweaking in a diving bell!

The flashback has a child Johnny so Race is still alive. There are other references with both Dr. Quest--torturing someone at OSI--and Race at OSI as well.

A cliffhanger? That was unexpected.

There too many subplots for this to be an enjoyable episode. Too often I was wishing for a fast-forward button so I could get to something interesting.

With all the money Rusty is supposed to have I'm surprised he doesn't go the Trump and hire Playboy models to have sex with him. Playing around with a black widow type seems stupid as well as dangerous. But then Rusty, like his "sons" is a death-prone guy.

This seemed like a eulogy type episode. The whole season seems like a Eulogy. We finally learn about Jonas's death, and who the Blue Morpho is. Rusty's origin is mostly clear. Then there's so many members of the council retiring and so many ofo the rank and file membership getting killed this year. It's hard to see the Guild going on.

There little things in the episode that I enjoyed, like the dick measuring contest between Col. Gaithers and Phantom Limb. Considering that the Col. had his dick removed at one point I was surprised that he had one to measure, then wondered if when he had it re-installed he asked to have it .... enlarged. There were other little bits I enjoyed.

It accidentally (maybe intentionally) feels like the penultimate season in a weird way, doesn't it?

I earnestly feel like this season could be setting up a final season.

Maybe, behind-the-scenes, Mike Lazzo told Jackson to start wrapping up the series, and that season eight could be the last.

The higher ups (and Adult Swim) may want to move on and make new shows and such.
It has been fifteen years. Seventeen years by the time a possible season eight would release.

He probably doesn't trust paid women, not after the prom. Since Brock most likely didn't tell him that they were actually hired assassins, he still believes that he was shut down all night by prostitutes. And he isn't about to use his special "spanish fly" again.

Buuuuut it did move a few things forward: Red Death essentially over-ruled "the Council" decision to pay the Peril Partnership. Or, given that Watch and Ward under the auspices gave him the order to arc the fool, perhaps it was all part of the plan!

So, absolutely no follow-up from last week? I know we still have two eps to go, but I find it odd.

Does Doc know his experiences were not real or did he just wake up in his own bed afterward and still thinks he joined that Illuminati group?

What did The Monarch do with the teleporters? Turn them in to the Guild, or does he have his own purpose for them in mind? Did his EMA level get bumped up?

Did Copy Cat survive? No fallout from the decoys setup? No mention of any of this in the Council meeting? As Hardyworld points out, where's Phineas Phage? You'd think this whole final arching mandate thing would require mandatory attendance. He probably would have arched Professor Impossible, or maybe an earlier foe like Bacterion or Iron Rod (see if you get the references). They had his voice actor playing Night Dick *snickers* in the episode, so....
  • 1
Sep. 22, 2018, 8:17am
I also was expecting at least a few minutes of followup concerning Dr. Venture's experience and The Monarch's sudden disappearance with the teleporters.

Given that Gary and The Monarch had literally 2 seconds to escape from the OSI and nowhere to run without being chased, I was expecting them to both stand on 1 teleporter while simultaneously holding the other teleporter upside-down above their heads and turn them both on at once, resulting in them all disappearing, but to an unknown location (fail-safe/backup teleporter located in the middle of Venture Industries?).
  • 1
Sep. 22, 2018, 6:51pm
I was under the impression that The Monarch and 21 just skedaddled into the subway entrance and hopped on a conveniently departing train. You could hear one in the tunnel as Brock and the OSI troopers were looking down at where the guys crash landed. But yeah, you'd still expect the OSI to try and head them off at the next stop, but the teleporters might still have come into play with their escape.

Sheila will resign the guild. Doc and Jackson have learned the hard way with 21 & 24 that they shouldn't break up partnerships.

Red Death's arching mirrors Godfather 2, where Vito Corleone interacts with local extortionist Don Fanucci. Under the guise of giving in to his shakedown, Vito actually kills Fanucci, leading to his becoming the local crime boss. Guess Blind Rage caught that train after all. With Sheila back to costumed villainy, a power vacuum now exists. Red Death control of a criminal organization, plus "70 years old", plus Sheila's black uniform = VB's Red Skull parody!

I just hope Dr Z doesn't come to mirror Hyman Roth.

"I just hope Dr Z doesn't come to mirror Hyman Roth."

There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. During Pyramid Wars, we ran molasses into Schenectady ... made a fortune, Rusty Venture's father, too.

As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for American medical tourists on the way to Cabos. That kid's name was Speedy, and the city he invented was Tijuana. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a set of wings for him in that town!

A minion put a dart through his eye as a mercy when someone was strangling him. No one knows who did the strangling; all of the witnesses were run over by Dodge Charger. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew Speedy, I knew he was over-eager, talking loud, saying stupid things. So when he turned up dead, I let it go.

And I said to myself, "this is the business we've chosen!" I didn't ask who did the strangling, because it had nothing to do with business!

I saw on Quite Interesting this week that tying someone to the train tracks had only been done in one film, originally, and the villain tied the hero to the tracks, and the damsel freed him before the train. All other incidents of it are parodies of the original, and they show the damsel tied to the tracks.
(I apologize, I can't find a legit link to it. But, you should watch QI.)

It s episodes like this that make it really evident two people are writing this show and splitting up the work more or less. There is zero callback ( maybe not zero, but very little) to the last episodes main plot lines. While the premise of this episode is cute and funny maybe we could have come in after some of these interactions had taken place? A lot of them seemed very anti climactic and the jokes falling flat. I guess they can't all be winners?

2018 Series Rewatch Notes:

- Albino bomb. Will this backstory for Pete White ever get explored further?

- The boys mother. Will we ever get real answers? Do we even want all the answers?

- Is Rusty just a clone? Or does he have a mommy? The clone theory explains Jonas Jr. and why he looks just like Jonas. Rusty was one messed up clone. Damn.

- Moppets big revenge? They can't be dead. Right.....?

- The villain dubbed Wall-Flower. Will he ever show up in a big way?

- Fat Chance... where art thou?

- Baron Underbheit? Where'd you go? They finally made him awesome around VB4... then he stopped appearing after the move to NYC. He robbed a space casino... Isn't That VVild... enough for a return!!!?!?!

- Girl Hitler and Catclops? Gone forever???

- Billy is stated to be 35. Then in VB4 (not many episodes later) he is stated to be 37.

- The shrink gun will always return. Always a Gloria!

- Hank is actually diagnosed as a "crybaby" in VB3 before being called a crybaby in VB4 by Rusty.

- Hatred mentions blowing up the Monarch's house in VB4. It was foreshadowing, he does just that in the final episode of VB5.

- Hatred mentions burning the compound down in VB5. Foreshadowing in motion, he eventually fails to stop the fire set by the Monarch and the compound is burnt to cinders.
He destroyed the fire trucks due to negligence with the security lasers. It was his ultimate fault.

- The PROBLEM Light is visible in certain shots for all of VB6. Simply sublime subtle foreshadowing. Almost feels like an easter egg in a weird way now.

- The Peril Partnership and the teleporter pads could definitely play huge roles in the VB7 finale.

- The disembodied Jonas head is most certainly coming back.

Some of the councilmen... er, councilpersons' interactions with their old enemies, particularly Lady Au Pair's, kind of reminded me of bumping into someone you went to high school with many years later whom you did not have a good relationship with back then. It's only happened to me a couple of times but it would be people who harassed me back in school, basically were total assholes to me. Then I'd be in a convenience store parking lot or a movie theater lobby, they'd recognize me and act as if we had been best of pals back in the day and it was good times galore. I'm not one to hold grudges, and I don't hate those people. I assume most of them have finally grown up, so I just acted politely and chatted for a few minutes, then we wished each other well and parted ways. Awkward...

Valid perspective, cpc65. But I look at those final archings as typical of management -- they really don't want to get their hands dirty (or get injured!) in a real arching. They're on the Council specifically to avoid that.

That said, they were all pretty damn funny.

Red Death stole the money... right?

He said he was gonna make the drop... but he tied Blind Rage to the tracks and flew off instead.

I suspect he hasn't given up killing either. It's implied he's done arching, thus he's done killing too, just for his seat. I know he said something about doing this for his wife... but his bloodlust has no end.

Anyway, looks like I didn't win a VB cake.

If Red Death is as honorable as he seems, he gave that Peril Partnership payoff right back to the Guild ("Here it is, counted and folded. Just like you gave it to me."), and scored points for it. Otherwise, he dumped it all into his IRA.

I think we will never know who his final arch was. He chose Blind Rage, instead.

So.... fans think Dr. Mrs. is pregnant... and they may be spot on.

Blind Rage mentions her breasts were swollen (possibly getting ready to lactate) and she wasn't on her monthlies (like she missed her period).
She also got emotionally distraught while talking to Novia.
Later on she told Gary that she, in fact, vomited. A common occurrence during pregnancy.

Anyway, her being pregnant would explain her wild mood swings this season.
Remember how she almost killed Kimberly, over practically nothing?

Kinda sad they figured it out... and I (mostly) missed it... it's pretty fucking obvious.

Remember the season 2 finale Showdown at Cremation Creek, Part II?

Sheila: "Monarch, I'm..."
The Monarch: "WHAT?!"

Many fans speculated that she told him that she was pregnant. It was the obvious guess. The Monarch had even pointed out that he thought her breasts were larger than normal and asked if she was "riding her cycle". Then in Shadowman 9, it turns out she actually said, according to The Monarch, the last f@*#ing thing he expected her to say.

So it would be funny if she really was pregnant this time around. Although Doc and JP have stated that when enough fans start to guess their plans they change them and therefore we sometimes wind up shaping the show in ways we might not always like. Plus they've red herring-ed us before. We'll see soon enough unless they make this a season-ending cliffhanger.

I get that they are all bad guys... but damn, you kill me and sew my reanimated head onto my friend's body... I'm not letting it go.

I mean, I get why PL and Hunter are arch rivals, since it was Hunter's covert operation that caused the accident (Billy's robotic eye exploding the machine) and ultimately created PL.

Anyway, I feel PL got off to waaaay to easy with regards to everything.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
