I actually liked Dean's development as a character... in the first half of the season... Venture's grooming him for Super-Scientist Stardom and a few, faltering steps with Triana were actually kind of nice to see. Sadly, the second half of the season more or less ignored Dean, replacing character development with story arcs that seemed designed to place him in ever more screwed up situations ('marrying' Underbheit, having that acid trip adventure into "The Neverending Story", etc.)
I can't help but wonder if the reason for that might lie with Hank. I think it can be agreed upon by everyone that the creators finally got a handle on his character this season, as opposed to Season 1 where Hank was simply the village idiot with the capacity to 'channel crazy dead people'. We finally begin to see the method behind his madness, and I actually began to like Hank after hating him in season 1.
Sadly, I'm not sure they've quite got a handle on Dean, just yet, hence his much more cautious development. Which is sad, since I actually like Dean, and also because he's probably the only major character that hasn't really had his own showcase, yet. A problem which I hope gets remedied in season 3.
Despite the lack of development, though, there are certainly more than a few seeds planted, even so. It's been intimated at least a couple of times that Dean secretly hates the adventuring lifestyle and seems to harbor more than a little resentment toward his father. Given the seemingly inevitable descent into either madness or failure that boy adventurers seem to get into, maybe Dean's beginning to realize that this life isn't all it's cracked up to be... which is ironic, since he seems to have at least some grasp of the 'family business' of SuperScience, but seems to resent the trappings of it (Dressing like Santa's Magic Janitor, being forced into dangerous situations, hiding in barrels, crawling in holes, etc.)
Of course, maybe I'm just reading too much into things... Oct. 22, 2006, 4:38am
