I'm not sure if Dean's fantasy sequence was really as big a dead end as everyone seems to think. He seemed to be taking quite a few issues out on the Monarch's engines, also represented in the character of The Lab Rat (and the fact that in Dean's fantasy his father is apparently dead, according to the Insect King).
"Run, orphans! Be free! And have your own room, and maybe not have to live in fear of costumed guys trying to kill you all the time! And there are no yetis freaking out on you, or, like, putting you on a rocket ship... run to a place where your father won't make you get in a fight with a venus flytrap, that walks... and... with a gun!"
Character development ahoy! Even more interesting is the fact that Hank doesn't seem to share Dean's disillusions about their crazy adventure-a-week lifestyle. Oct. 15, 2006, 8:34pm

I agree with you that there was a lot of Dean issues in the dream sequence. That part worked for me. My only nitpick was that there didn't seem to be any rationale behind the hallucination.
If there were fumes or radiation in the engine room it would have effected the Henchman who was in there before.
The best explanation I can come up with is that the hallucination is some kind of coping mechanism Dean uses to deal with the fact that he is locked up and cut off from his family. Still, Dean's been in weirder scrapes before so why would being locked in an engine room, one he was only too keen to check out, cause him to retreat into crazy fantasy land?
It seemed like the hallucination was mostly an excuse for Dean to knock out the cocoon's engines at a critical moment in the narrative. That's only a small nitpick in what was otherwise a stellar episode. Oct. 16, 2006, 4:34am

My interpretation was that Dean was so scared he went into his fantasy world as part of a defense mechanism...after all, even the Monarch's "minions" seemed to be sacred of going into the engine room, imagine what it would do to poor Dean... at any rate the whole thing was pretty hilarious, my favorite part being when the Neverending Story dog-thing lands and says "I LOOOVE YOU!" I was rofling on that one.

i loved the neverending story thing, because right at the beginning, there was pretty much the defining quote from dean.
when he's on the wrist communicator and says "it's dean... dean venture."
i laughed more then at almost anything else, because they're super secret wrist communicators, that only four people, (five, if you count helper), have them, and 3 are literally related and one is closer then most... uncles or whatever.
he doesn't need to say his last name.
i dunno. i just loved that. Oct. 17, 2006, 5:06am
