I'm shocked *shocked* that no one has mentioned the bit about Dean not being one of the items Dr. O needs to gain entry to Rusty's mind. To me, that was one of the best moments in the entire episode.

I think because the two boys are clones the Doc has less of an attachment to them as he should, even Dean. However as time goes on I think he will start to make a connection to them especially after the mending Dr O has just done.

I don't even think it's that, he cares about them enough and knows that he's a poor enough father to implement cloning at all. If anything I think having the stockpile of clones made him a worse father then he is now (like telling Hank to be careful opening strange boxes in "Blood of the Father").

Really I think his detachment from them is because he's completely self-absorbed and even bordering on delusional at times. And then because of his extraordinarily bizarre upbringing and the no doubt hefty expectations his father placed upon him he's completely messed up and probably not capable of attaching himself to his own sons, almost similar to how his father was with him. He doesn't know how to be a dad because he doesn't have a single normal point of reference. Brock and Sgt. Hatred are better at being fathers than he which is completely sad given how each of them is.

I think realistically Doc never had a chance to be normal. Sadly he was destined for failure.
