Did anyone notice that this episode had 3 potential references to 'Return to Malice'; all from 21's list (and I may be stretching here):
"Shape-shifting nightshade": David Bowie (naturally) and Dr. Girlfriend's shoe- whose named Lady Nightshade.
And the Intangible Fancy: which may be "Happenstance" (suggested by another commenter- Hardy)

Seeing Phantasmos play the sousaphone reminded of how Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett rounded up Salvation Army brass musicians to play in his tracks (much to the dissapointment of the other musicians).

It's actually a much funnier joke if "Happenstance" just refers to actual happenstance (as if such a phenomenon could be interrogated). I have no idea where anyone would get the idea that happenstance somehow represents the Intangible Fancy.

Happenstance is somewhat of an intangible concept, so I see where he's coming from. Still, I think you're right about it meaning the abstract idea.
