io9's SDCC Interview With Jackson and Doc

io9 has a pretty good interview with Jackson and Doc from the press hour at SDCC. As is the custom there are a lot of hilarious meanderings about black and white cookies and Pulp (which isn't entirely off-topic) but there's also plenty of meaty goodness as well:

Jackson Publick: We expand the background stories of the characters from the OSI. The hardest thing about making up a name for a [fake] G.I. Joe guy is that all of the stupid names are actually taken by G.I. Joes.

Doc Hammer: Every time I come up with one, I think "Oh, this is so ridiculous!" Then I go on Wikipedia to check and they've done that one already. Who knew? The names we came up with are good because the dumb ones are actually G.I. Joe characters. Like "Headshot." That's a hot one!

Love io9 because you can tell they not only have actually seen the show they get it as well.

For anyone that went to the panel: what was the background art and characters that they showed along with the animatic trailer? Any new, exciting locales or people?

It's nice to see they introduce a new female character. I still long for the return of Kim but Jill-o-lantern will do.

Jill-O-Lantern, ehh???

Looks like a left over 'Tick' design... nice try.

Now try again.

I saw that concept art and through all my searching the only place I also saw it was on another site, the venture blog, through google images, but attatched to an old story on the Adult Swm upfront when the special episode was first announced.

But no one else seemed to get the art at that time? So, seems odd at least.

Just to clarify: Jill O'Lantern is not a character in the upcoming season of The Venture Bros. When we tested potential new character designers for the show before the start of the season, we gave them a list of a dozen fake character names and descriptions, and their assignment was to design several of them based on that information. The art depicted in that article is from someone's test (I have no idea who)--it is not an actual production design model sheet. Other notable fake villain names on that list: Man-Dune, G. Gordon Lightfoot, Zapf Chancellor, and Mecha-Jack Parsons.

Like Ginger said, it gets no more definitive than that.

Now time to geek out and just say how awesome it is that Jackson visits the fan sites and takes the time to wade in on their discussions as well.

I know there is no way Jackson is still reading 15 comments down but do we have any clarification on A) how long the halloween special is and B) if it counts as one of the 10 episodes of the new season?

Because if history is any indication the answers are 15 minutes and no but there have been a lot of conflicting reports from SDCC.

According to everything I've read and that's been said (from official sources, not second hand from SDCC) it's an 11-minute special episode and it's not part of the ten episodes of the season though it does take place after the season five premiere.

Actually, after watching the panel video, it might be part of the ten episodes and, by extension, 30 minutes? I'll see if I can find out!

I thought the Halloween special was animated by Titmouse (like the Shallow Gravy special) and not animated over seas like all the other episodes.

You just know you're going to bring those fake names into the show somehow because thats how every character ends up :P

(Watch out for a million Jill-o-Lantern cosplays at next Dragon Con though) !!!

A long time ago....

There was mention of Robot Chicken / Venture Bros. cross over. What that would actually look like, I don't really know (15 min. VB special episode using toys and models or some spoof work or something else), but I wonder if that idea was dropped long ago or if there remains some possibility that it could happen. Any news from ComicCon on that?

I think it would be more of using the Venture Bros. toys in a Robot Chicken sketch. Plus since Jackson and Doc know Seth Green the voices could be accurate.

I guess. Maybe RC would make an [as] episode where they spoof many popular [as] shows (I'd love that, especially if they spoof some older series like SGCTC, FD, SL2021, HB:AAL, HM, and S&H).

Somebody needs to tell Doc to stop buying black and whites in delis. The thing was probably in plastic wrap, which is never a good sign. To have any shot a decent one, you have to go to a bakery, and even then, it's a crapshoot.
