Season Five Status Update From Jackson Himself

Season Five Status Update From Jackson Himself

After yesterday's speculation on season 5, Jackson was nice enough to give me some more specifics on what exactly is going on. On how the episode production pipeline is going he had this to say (emphasis mine):

Things are moving briskly over here at Venture Central/AstroBase/Titmouse. The first episode just shipped to Korea. But you're wrong about one thing--it doesn't take nine months to animate overseas. Nine months is more like the time it takes to complete an episode from initial design to final edit, so it includes pre-production. Actually, it's more like ten months, since we began design on the first episode the first week of the new year, and we'll be delivering it to the network in early October. According to our schedule--and assuming we keep to it--all ten episodes will be completed and delivered by the end of January. Which is roughly when we're supposed to premiere the fifth season.

So, new Venture Bros. to kick off the new year? Sounds like a plan! Jackson also noted that he and Doc likely will be attending all three conventions this summer (SDCC, Dragon*Con and NYCC) and they promise to show off whatever they have ready at the time. SDCC comes a little too early in production so they might not have any stuff to show off just yet, but Dragon*Con and NYCC will "maybe kinda" have some sort of trailer.

And finally, he promises that he still loves you all and will start posting art and whatever else on his LiveJournal fairly soon. Thanks, Jackson!

:D !!!YAY!!! :D

Also should I go as casual Molotov, Nikki Fictell, Dr. Quymn or Mz. Quymn??? I'm thinking Dr. Quymn : )

This is just my opinion, and I'm probably not going to make it to Dragon*Con, but you should go as casual Mol.

Dragon*Con seems to be the most fan-oriented, and it's certainly the closest to you. You also stand a chance of seeing Jackson and/or Doc the most since they usually participate in a bunch of other panels compared to only one or two at SD/NY comic cons (they also usually do at least two autograph sessions at any given convention). I have personally never been but it seems like a good time! SDCC is the largest and probably has the best chance of having a ridiculous Adult Swim party like last year, and NYCC is kind of like a smaller version of that.

Thank you, that's very helpful! I'll probably do Dragon Con, I've heard it's a blast and I'd love to see Jackson and Doc!

Great to hear directly from the creators how production is going. VB has set the bar so high, we have to remember such a high quality product takes lots of work. As a fan, all I ever see is a 22 minute final product that each took months and months of work from the creators and additional months of work from all the other artists, actors, producers, assistants, etc. January is much closer than I had silently speculated; so I am very excited to be getting 10 more episodes of my favorite show so soon!

Go Team Venture!

Glad to hear the new timeline, but is 10 months typical for most animated production? That seems incredibly long to me (given something like South Park's fast turnaround), but I'm sure type of animation, budget, personnel and lots of other variables come into play. Anybody have any insight here?

10 months is about average for most productions. South Park just has a really fast turnaround due to the software they use and the fact that almost everything happens in one building. Most shows have a place for storyboarding/writing, another for voice recording, then have the bulk of the animation done somewhere else (usually overseas). After they get that back, they check it for animation errors, any of which are sent back for redoing. Then they score and foley the episode, edit it down for time and any content issues before finally being finished.

Yeah, South Park is really the exception rather than the rule. Small-scale shows like ATHF can also be pretty quick to animate but for a traditionally animated show like Venture Bros, The Simpsons, Family Guy etc it's at least 10 months from start to finish.

Man, we still have another 7 months at least of a wait? I mean, heck, it's already been a over a year since Season 5 and 6 were announced as being picked up. That would be close to two whole years between the two seasons.

Is there going to be such a massive wait between 5 & 6 as there is between 4 & 5?

I asked them that when I interviewed them after NYCC and the answer was no at the time. They want to roll right over into season six once season five is completed. Not sure if that will happen in practice (especially since the transition from season three to four was so difficult), but they do have a bigger budget and more people working so hopefully they can do it this time.

If a 2+ year wait (when you consider that Operation PROM aired in November of 2010!) is what comes with more money and people, then I'd hate to see what they'd do with the same budget!

Well, Jackson and Doc I think spent most of the time writing. They only started the actual animation for it in January; so it makes sense I reckon.

That's ok, South Park isn't really that funny and usually stabs for the lowest common denominator joke and beats it to death with a stick.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
