Dr. Quymn, Medicine Capsule

I am willing to bet I can mangle each episode of the season for the 'capsule done' updates, and if not I am sure as hell going to try. Anyways, Dr. Quymn capsule/notes/screenshots are up. As always let me know about anything I missed (I always miss some stuff) or whatever else you want.
Not sure if someone mentioned this already, but the "How long it's been" exchange between Tara and Rusty parallels a similar encounter between Brock and Molotov in Assassinanny 911.

Wow, that's right. Good memory. But was it Assassinanny? I thought it was Brisby...I'd have to check again.

Ah, I think you're right about Brisby.

I might be wrong (especially because I haven't seen the film) but do you think Clyde (the boxing orangutan) is a reference to Every Which Way But Loose which stars Clint Eastwood with a Orangutan named Clyde?

Agreed. There also was a sequel (only God knows why): Every Which Way You Can.

I have been shouting about the Every Which Way But Loose reference over on the "discuss the episode" board since it premiered! Clearly it's just a random ref. but the ape's name in the movie was Clyde and he often fought along side Clint in bar brawls and the like.

Also, the fertility idol situation is seemingly a take-off on the opening of Raiders of the Lost Arc where Indy nabs a fertility idol from a temple protected by a dark-blowing native tribe.

The were-o-dile sub plot and the ending were obviously nods to Scooby Doo style villains (as explained by the Pirate Captain during his spiel in The Buddy System)

Yeah, I was going to mention that, except add that in typical Dr. Venture style he actually got shot by the darts. Love the failure motif of this show.

You missed something, it was caught by Todd Alcott on his Live Journal. The name of Quymn's bodygaurd references an advertisement from the 70's for cigarettes. This reference is further cemented when the bodyguard uses the catch phrase, "You've come a long way" before giving Quymn a cigarette.

You missed Colonel Gentleman eying a young David Bowie and then making a Bowie song reference, "Oh! You Pretty Things" off of the album Hunky Dory. I think the character was even modeled after Bowie off of his appearance on the cover of his first album from 1967, as seen here: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000006P8I.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

And Bowie has slept with men before, that's no secret. He met his first wife because they were both screwing the same guy.

So was the Sovereign of the Guild attending swinger parties at the Venture Compound back in the day? What's that all about? Is that how they got Rusty's Law passed?

You know, that makes *sense*.

If I were a gifted rock star and shapeshifter with a up and coming presence in the Guild, if I saw just how lousy a dad Jonas was, wouldn't I put into law something that protects the poor kids of these adventurers?

Besides, if you kill off the kids, who will you have to arch, in the next generation?

That probably is Bowie. Sweet.
The more Bowie in this show, the better, as far as I'm concerned. Even if he is havin' sex with Horace Gentleman.

Heh, I don't think Jonas Sr. was such a terrible Dad. He seemed to genuinely care about Rusty's welfare. He just didn't know any better, like many old-school fathers.

Being promiscuous doesn't make him a terrible father. Personally, I think that people are trying to place Jonas Sr. in the failure paradigm of the show, when really he is an architype of success. His only real flaw is how annoyingly perfect he is, and his legacy looms over everyone else in the Ventureverse and exposes their flaws by comparison.

I don't know why anyone is disappointed to find out that Jonas Sr. is just as flawed as any of the other characters. I believe, for example, that it's already been mentioned by Doc and Jackson that dragging your child into harm's way *constantly*, when they should just be doing regular kid stuff -- not really the most responsible parenting.

Plus, it makes Rusty's pathos much more palpable. I'm starting to feel really sorry for him this season, which is good, because before he was just kind of an asshole. Living in your father's shadow is one thing, but having a father who does the sorts of things that they show him doing in this week's episode is a different story. Also - he's a philanderer, which is immoral and sets a bad example.

Well the line is a Bowie reference for sure but I am still not entirely convinced that the guy at the party was Bowie. I'm obviously not saying that there's no way it was him, but there's not really much to go on other than them having the same colored hair and giving this guy a late 60's haircut similar to Bowie's. I'll probably stick it in there just in case but I don't know if people are reading into it way too much.

Movie references...

The key party at the beginning is from the "Ice Storm."

The plot with the cancer cure in the form of the special fruit is from "Medicine Man."

Hey, Anyone notice this Dr. Quymn / Lara Croft parallel. When she and rusty climbed the tree, she did the "Lara Croft" flip famous from the games.

Hey Mike, while your capsule does mention the Quymn/quim thing, you forgot to point out that her mother was a James Bond(or Sean Connery) companion. So the double entendre name is pretty fitting.

There's one other minor characteristic that Dr. Quymn takes from Dr. Quinn and not Lara Croft. Quinn and Quymn have rust-colored hair, while Croft is dark-headed.

Maybe this is completely obvious, but the Venture doorbell sound is the last two notes of the opening credits theme song. Kind of a weird diagetic thing.

I think the following screenshot from TV Squad shows the uncomfortable postion was in Dean concerning his "encounter" with the Nacy and Drew (through I would tend to disagree if I were in him).

That shot is priceless! The best part is the bra stuffing perched on Dean's chest.
Obviously Dean was uncomfortable with the whole thing, although mostly because he thought that the girls were the Wereodile. That's the whole joke! The over-sexed Quymn twins are the opposite of the naive Venture twins.
Also, the shocked expression on everyone's face in that shot is due to the fact that Ginny had just busted in on Doc and Tara and was making a ruckus.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
