Report From Dragon-Con '08

Many thanks to Toon Zone for posting a brief summary of the VB panel at this years Dragon-Con. Some highlights if you click through (still trying to avoid spoilers on the front page) including the future of characters, small clarifications, some DVD news and of course genitalia jokes.

Q: What is the fate of Henchman 24?
A: "25 is going to be the exact same guy with a voice that's easier to do." But in short, Doc Hammer stated quite emphatically, "24 is not coming back."

Q: With the T-Shirt of the Week Club continue for Season 4?
A: Probably not, but there will be "much more merchandise" by then.

Q: Will we be seeing more of Phantom Limb?
A: Phantom Limb will be appearing in the first two episodes of Season 4

"...Hammer and Publick said ... the DVD would be 'uncensored...[with] no bars on the genitals.' Hammer said you'll be able to see Dr. Venture's junk in all its glory. I did, however, detect a hint of jest from the both of them regarding this as they launched into a series of genitalia jokes."

Oh COME ON! They're joking! They aren't going to get rid of 24 for good!
THEY JUST CAN'T!!!! This is horse crap!

And they might have Season 3 have no bleeps, but I'm pretty sure they have to keep the black bars.

Regarding my thoughts on 24 being replaced by 25, let me copy/paste what I said elsewhere...

So basically we’re getting an exact character swap? 24, but with a new voice?

I truly, truly hope not. (The report that I’m quoting from, by the way, obviously had trouble telling joke from fact, so let’s hope he just mangled the response to this question.)

24’s death had the chance to really take a few characters to interesting places. The Monarch relied on him, the Moppets hated him, and 21 couldn’t make it through the day without him.

Will 21 at least mis-trust this new guy? THAT could be interesting. Have 25 establish himself as a very similar character on the surface, but keep 21 skeptical of who he really is an his intentions…have his similarities to his dead friend frustrate 21 rather than endear him…

Bah. This show has handled so many should-have-been lousy developments (the main characters being clones, the core romantic relationship of the show being broken) so well in the past that I’m not quite sure why I’m nervous about this one…but I am. Fingers crossed that this doesn’t represent the first severe mis-step in the show’s development…

I'm almost certain the 25 thing is a joke. Jackson and Doc have never given away anything like that at a con panel. The most they ever say about upcoming stuff is "so and so will be appearing"

And the #25 comment about being virutally the same was a "Rumor we are officially trying to start"

Yeah, when I get home tonight I'll watch my tape of the panel and I'll do a more detailed report.

On a funny note they were introduced as "Two men who's childhood dream was the work at an Animation Studio that Orbited the Moon, unlike the dreams of most kids" and my fiancee who is in school for Animation right now, was a huge Sailor Moon fan as a child and thus her dream was always to "Live on the Moon." and "Be an animator."

When she told them at the autograph session they were huge inspirations to her they asked "Really? You can't do better than us?"

contemplation (meant to be for fun) : what if 24 had been downgraded to 25 and someone else became 24. i mean in essense the fact that 24 was called out would be correct and is especially interesting now that doc said both 24 and 25 will have the same voice.

As I said though 24 is dead for sure but I just had share this small scenario.

Doc didn't say 24 and 25 would have the same voice. What he said was something along the lines of:

"We are trying to start a rumor that we are introducing a new character called 25 and he'll be the same as 24 in every way except have an easier voice to do."

They flat out admitted one of the reasons they killed 24 was his voice was too hard to do.

24 sees the moppets about to push the button in the distance. He drops and rolls, assumes the identity of 25. Most of the guys in the cocoon sort of look like him.

Personally I feel a charecter NEEDED to die. I mean, when ever a charecter dies or has a close experience, they come back. Hank and Dean, Phantom Limb, Brock getting pumped full of Tranq Dart, I am sure there are more I cant think of.

Think about it...to every comedy there is a tragedy. And even though I loved 24, he also the perfect charecter for us to lose. If the charecters keep coming back we will never be surprised when someone dies and then some of the magic of the show is gone.

So yeah, I don't know. Maybe he will come back and maybe not. But for the time being maybe we should let 24 rest in peace. We will love him and he will always be in our memory. But that is how it's got to be IF/UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.

I agree. I'll miss him (he was a great character) but it's things like this that keep the show real, and the action dangerous. It separates it from the kinds of cartoons it's spoofing. While I wouldn't have WANTED 24 to die, I do want him to stay dead...if only out of respect for the situation itself, and all the foreshadowing that led up to it.

That said, if they kill off Quizboy I will personally shit on Jackson's doormat.

PLUS!! If he is really dead...how good will it feel when we see the bastard/basterds who killed them get whats coming to them. If he is gone...I'm sure there will be revenge.

Think of how many awesome stories could come from 24 passing. If it was the moppets...there is some MAJOR drama between Monarch and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch. Possibly a divorce? And 21 getting some balls (possbily from the Wizard of Booze) and taking out the evil doers who took his best friend. Maybe even him giving up a life of crime??

The one thing I will say is this: We cannot lose Brock. He is too much of a huge part of the show. And I am not that big of a Sgt. Hatred fan. As for him, I hope he becomes an OSI agent and does cool things there. Possibly helping the Ventures AND Brock. But never a full member of that clique. UNLESS we get a a treat and a FULL team Venture is formed incuding Rusty, Jonas JR, Captain, Sally, Hank, Dean, Brock, and Sgt. Hatred. How bad ass would that be? Maybe Sgt. Hatred could become just a part of Jonas's team.

I am just spitting out ideas as they come right now. But thats how I feel.

Scamp lost his hair in the Pilot. The Pilot isn't canon so that never happened. Scamp died but I bet he died for some other reason.

Just like any pilot, TTSOTB is clearly a bit different than the show proper (particularly in the super-simple animation style and very basic characterizations) but there isn't really anything that seems really out of place.
They also referenced the pilot in Showdown at Cremation Creek when Hank wears the "old" henchman uniform (from the pilot).

Well, Hank and Dean were already clones...that's not a decision they made later. It was built into the characters and foreshadowed throughout the season.

24's death was also foreshadowed throughout season three.

Hank and Dean being clones was a respectful move and part of the characterization.

Keeping 24 dead would also be the respectful thing to do, if they want to honor their own method of storytelling.

They were each completely different "kinds" of deaths.

I think, like most always, most of you need to chill out. Everything Jackson and Doc say (especially at conventions) should be taken with a grain of salt. They are relentlessly sarcastic and obviously take sadistic pleasure in fucking with the minds of their audience.
It's also evident through several comments made through the first three seasons that they are aware of fans like ourselves and all our wild theories and opinions and that they find us rather silly. With that in mind, they intentionally start rumors and play with our expectations (best example: powerless in the face of death) which is something that is really unique to this show and should be celebrated.
Look, I know that during the off-season there isn't much to talk about except DVD and season 4 speculation, but in general we should all just sit back and enjoy the weirdness instead of getting all worked up over whether they are going to replace 24 with 25 etc. etc. It's their show and they are gonna do what they want with it and it's gonna be genius and we are gonna love it. End of story. =)

i had to look up the FF baby since i thought she was eating pavement on the wmsburg bridge and moving clock hands as her powers:

Valeria Richards exhibited several superpowers, though the exact extent of her abilities is unknown. She was able to transform into an armored form, with the design of the armor somewhat derivative of Doctor Doom's. She inherited the ability of her mother to project force fields; however, she did not bend light to do so. She actually manipulated time and space fields to create these barriers. She could also use this manipulation to travel back and forth through time.

Why is there a question of Hank and Dean's mother ever appearing on the series? Didn't they already establish that crazy ex-OSI chick was their mom?

And the pilot isn't canon, they just decided to keep the dream sequences. Listen to the commentary for the pilot.

It's a month old but there's not much news here for two years at a time, so whatever :) https://www.denofgeek.com/us/tv/the-venture-bros/281421/the-venture-bros-season-8-jackson-publick-doc-hammer

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
