Since these were fairly popular last season (you know, back in 2006) I'll be putting them up this season for each episode as well. You can use the comments here to post whatever you want about the season three premiere episode. If you're wondering why it's up at 6pm (EST) on Friday it's because that's when the episode gets put up on Adult Swim.com in the video section.

If you haven't seen the episode yet and don't want it to be spoiled you are advised not to read these comments! There may be spoilers present! You have been warned!

Finally!

Was it just me or were some of the council members the old Team Venture? I'm betting we'll find out next week...

Also, Brock didn't have a speaking role and Venture and the kids didn't even show up...

Some of the council memebers were at the wedding for sure. one of the them was the white haired victorian guy from the guild video that Dr. O recieved in Fallen arches. ( he was an example of inappropriate behavior.)

I thought some of them were references. One looked alot like Die Fledermaus from The Tick, another looked kind of like Wile E. Coyote (or a chipmunk in a plumed tri-corner hat)

Yeah, I liked this episode except for the fact that the Ventures or even Brock wasn't involved in it. I liked the shift in focus but I don't like the fact that this is the 2nd episode the boys didn't really appear in. ("Powerless" doesn't count)Hank and Dean are my favorite characters. I think the 2nd episode is when this season is going to really kick some ass. Just like "Hate Floats" did after "Powerless in the face of death"................

Can't wait to see this on the big screen on Sunday. I imagine there's going to be some discontent among people who'd prefer to have seen a Venture-centric episode, but I adored it.

Episode scoring is now enabled and I added a few random notes: http://mantiseye.com/?ep32

Also, I know it was in a tiny window, but that episode looked really good. It's astounding how far the art and animation have come in this show. Some of the stuff in season one was downright abysmal looking, but everything in this episode was stellar quality. I hope it looks as good on a TV.

So here's my question - that bit after the credits with Limb, does that basically just throw the whole defense of the Monarch out the window, by implying he was doing exactly what the Guild was accusing him of doing? That's the way I read it, and thought it hilarious. Excellent episode.

by Phil
May. 31, 2008 (8:04pm EST)
I think so. The "twist" at the end is something I need to see it again to understand fully in terms of its implications.

Dr. Girlfriend's defense was that Phantom Limb wasn't nearly stupid enough not to recognize The Monarch later on, so it's his fault that he was continue to operate as an unauthorized supervillain.

But yeah, after the credits, it certainly does seem that Phantom Limb WAS stupid enough, and somehow believed that the huge, hulking Manotaur was the same person as the skinny little beanpole he encountered years earlier.

But it's clear that he "became" the Monarch for the sake of winning Dr. Girlfriend, not to make Venture's life hell. (He tried doing that before his transformation anyway.)

by Amaziah Nazarian
May. 31, 2008 (10:26pm EST)
Did you see the phantom limbs robo-hand? I wonder how he was fixed. Also let's not forget that the Monarch was raised by butterflies! It was his destiny!
17
by Phil
Jun. 1, 2008 (12:12am EST)
I didn't notice the robo-hand! But I chalk it up to the small window I had to watch it through...hopefully I would have noticed on Sunday on television.

I did notice his face was all scarred up, but I assumed it was a bandage or something.

And yeah, good point about him "becoming" the Monarch way back when he was a child. But I guess there's no reason to believe he was doing so with villainous purposes...he may have just wanted to be a butterfly, rather than a villain with a butterfly theme.

Well...whatever. It was a great episode, and a hell of a good kickoff to what is probably going to be a very heavy, very confusing season.

Apparently, the Intagible Fancy never talked to
Torrid at that party flash back they were in (they were standing right next to eachother). In
Fallen arches they have never met eachother. Also Dr. Girlfiends hair DID look like Saphron's from Republica when she met the monarch. (a reference from Victor.Echo.November)

Honestly, I think it couldn't compare to the opening scenes of "Powerless in the Face of Death," and Dr. Girlfriedn's revelation that she wanted to return to the fold of the Guild was a bit of a let down. Otherwise, this episode was 100% awesome. The highlight of the episode had to be the reappearance of the Sovereign, and the Monarch's subsequent utterance of "David Bowie!"

I found that so disapointing. I did like the how the they carried on the gag of having a different opening sequence just like they did for Season 2 (Powerless in the Face...). That was cool, but this is the Venture Bros. It would of been nice if some Ventures (Rusty's not talking scenes don't count.) were in it. That was not kickass. And I adore Dr. Girlfriend & Monarch.

I'm impressed. Really impressed. The quality of it all was amazing. I loved the references, the guild history, and the fact that they didn't have to have the Ventures in the whole episode. Not that I don't love them. But let's be honest- all of the characters of the Venture-verse are awesome! Even the villains!

Side note: We don't know exactly what Dr. Girlfriend said at the end of last season. She mentions she was asked to get the Monarch to stop arching Venture, sure. But that doesn't mean that THAT was what she told him. She could still be preggers. Or maybe I'm totally off-base here, and hoping for more. Either way, 1-1000, this episode gets 10000000000000! Thanks Doc and Jackson!

Really enjoyable as usual. The title sequence was hilarious as was the ending. Unexpected return of Brock's Workout song from Midlife Crysalis, never thought that was coming back. Also Kevin and Tim-Tum? Can't say I much cared for the Moppets, except for when one of them started stabbing one of the henchman after they dumped Gatorade on him, that was hysterical.

I believe brock and the doc said that she was crazy because she thought she was the boys mother. She truly was Rusty's body guard after his dad died. He had sex with her in the venture prototype car. There is no reference to her being osi. maybe the ventures hired out bodyguards before brock came along. She was Powercat the gladiator though.

Where was the music from that they played near the end where all the supervillians showed up to help rebuild the Cacoon? I know I've heard it before in some movie and it's driving me nuts! I'm thinking one of the Conan movies maybe, but I'm sure it's one of those themes that's been used a few things.

So Charlene wasn't a member of the Guild when she number 2’d for Truckules?

They mentioned the theme in the bumper right before the episode aired, it's the Jupiter movement from Holst's Planets.

I seriously can't wait for the O.S.I./G.I. JOE flashback episode. I can't believe Doc and Jackson went there, oh but they did...they did.

Thanks. I'll have to do some digging to see what movies this has been used in. If it wasn't in one of the Conan movies, then it was something that sounded like this.

Yeah. That O.S.I. cartoon is what probably what enticed Billy Quizboy to sign up with them.

Just taking a stab here, but I'm thinking it is an ode to Basil Poledouris' score on Conan the Barbarian. It sounds like generic movie music fare. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gur7kJythgM&feature=user

Yes. This was the song I was remembering, and it does sound "like" the song they used in Shadowman 9, but it is not the same song. I think Badass Robot is correct about it being the Jupiter Movement which also means they probably didn't have to pay anything to use it as it's been around so long. 24 was humming Mars Volta when changing into his Henchman outfit at the opening of Hate Floats (still the funniest scene aver for me!), so this aould follow suite. Thanks all for the help.

Sorry man, that wasn't Mars Volta. It was Mars, Bringer of War. There's a strong distinction here as Mars Volta is the name of a current, touring progressive jamband...and Mars, Bringer of War is a selection from an extremely famous classical suite!

speaking of music, does anyone else think the song Dr. Girlfriend and The Monarch hooked up to was the Sugarcube's song HIT? Personally I think that would be the perfect song (lyrics matching with senerio.)
43
Jun. 3, 2008 (6:53am EST)
The Guild Mentions Bjork's Lawyers, and knowing how Doc and Jackson's minds work, could be a possiblity.
44
by Reynolds
Jun. 3, 2008 (7:49am EST)
It's definitely A Sugarcubes song (one of the council members says, "Einar was ready to sign but Björk's lawyers wouldn't budge..." referring to Einar Örn Benediktsson, the other vocalist in The Sugarcubes. Whether it's "Hit" or not, remains to be seen.

In the montage immediately following that scene (where the Monarch and DGF are being prepared for their initiation as Guild members, the music is very clearly the inspired by "The Orgy" from the soundtrack to the first Conan film (the music played as Conan and crew sneak into Thulsa Doom's temple to rescue the princess).

And no, I don't have a life for noticing that.
47
Jun. 3, 2008 (8:42am EST)
It sounds a similar to the Conan music, but pretty sure that is a classical selection.
50
by Reynolds
Jun. 3, 2008 (5:18pm EST)
It may be an established piece, but I believe the similarity is deliberate. One of the mexican wrestlers looks like a Thulsa Doom lackey, the use of snakes in the ceremony, the disrobing...all points to Conan in my mind.

So am I stupid or did I miss what Dr.Girlfriend was saying at the end of Season 2? They referenced it, but never said exactly what it was? Though for some reason I didn't hear a lot in the beginning when they were fighting.
46
by Reynolds
Jun. 3, 2008 (8:02am EST)
I don't believe they actually TELL you what she said. Monarch implies that she was said something about the situation in which we find them when the episode begins. I think based on all of that, she may have revealed to him that she made him stop arching Dr. Venture so the Guild would lay off him as they viewed him as in violation of their by-laws even though he apparently had no idea that he'd run afoul of them.
48
Jun. 3, 2008 (8:57am EST)
Monarch said fighting the "slaughter bots" was the last thing he expected her to have in mind.
And we learned from the Sovereign that was one of the tests to being villian and villianess.
So, that was what she must have said. She wanted to be Villian and Villianess under the guild in my mind.

Oh man, Finally mentioning "Doug" in an Episode, Seeing Queen Atheria with the Red stringey things in her hair, like that girl "Saffron" from the band Republica, "Betty Rage", Seeing what The Monarch actually looked like when he was in Rusty's Creative writing class, Finding out he was a ShadowMan? Come On!!!! That was a great Episode!
(Sans the crappy Moppets thing) I didn't care much for them.
Anyway, in total, the episode was Extra-Hot-Great!!!

57

Jun. 5, 2008 (5:35pm EST)
I don't think that's a discrepancy; I think that's a case of the Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend being dishonest/evasive/uncomfortable about their past. People do that all the time.
59
by Miller Industries
Jun. 6, 2008 (9:50am EST)
I see what you mean by Dr. Girlfriend. But the Monarch was acting like he had never met Phantom Limb, or worked for him, nor that SHE had ever worked for him. Why would some some say "Hey, didn't you work for him or something?," when clearly he had stolen her from PL. Not only did he steal her from him, he made a spectacle of it. The Monarch knew she worked for PL! Why ask that question??? Listen to how he asks it. The question sounds genuine. Otherwise: WHY ASK IT AT ALL????

For funzies?
60
by Pirate Hippy
Jun. 7, 2008 (11:20am EST)
We should watch that episode again. Maybe in light of our new knowledge, that exchange will play out very differently. Like, for instance, the Monarch knew exactly who Phantom Limb was and was being sarcastic and needling Dr. Girlfriend about her past with Phantom Limb. Even when I watched that episode for the first time, I got the distinct impression that the Monarch knew more about the past relationship between Dr. Girlfriend and Phantom Limb than he was letting on. I think you are interpreting that exchange far too literally.
61
by Miller Industries
Jun. 7, 2008 (9:44pm EST)
Jackson and Doc, if they had planned that far ahead, wouldn't have let that exchange seem so be so natural. There would have been an air of ambiguity in the air with what the Monarch said. Annnnd there wasn't. At least I didn't hear any. It sounds like he was asking a legit question. I know the Monarch's sarcasm. And he wasn't using it.
62
by Pirate Hippy
Jun. 8, 2008 (4:49am EST)
You do, do you? Watch it again. Even when I watched it the first time, I did not take what the Monarch said literally. He was holding something back. They don't bang you over the head with it by being obvious, but there's more going on in that exchange than a literal interpretation would indicate.
63
by Pirate Hippy

i know we're not still discussing this episode, but i don't see anyone commenting on the familiar architecture in PLimb's home. the tiles are styled like the ones from Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis-Brown house. you'd be familiar with them because Harrison Ford lived in an apartment like that in Bladerunner. and Timothy Dalton lived in it in The Rocketeer. i think those tiles have been in something else since then, too.
