Handsome Randsom

Just a reminder that the second episode of season four airs tonight (Oct 25th) at midnight. A discussion thread will be up for those of you who enjoy being all talkie-talk, and hopefully you can rate it on the capsule page as well if I remember to enable that in time.

Also for those of you with Cartoon Network HD on the west coast, that channel seems to be on east coast time (at least if you have Comcast) so you can catch the episode at 9pm (and again at 1am if you missed it).

So... the second episode of every season is usually one of my least favs of the season. Hope this doesn't happen again.

I'd have to agree with that, the exception being "Hate Floats" was mildly entertaining, and it was the best display of Phantom Limb's powers. "Careers in Science is my absolute least favorite out of all of them so far (followed by "Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner")

"The Doctor is Sin"'s only real claim to fame is featuring, IMHO, the best drawn representation of a penis ever.

Oh well, maybe tonight will be different.

"Hate Floats" was one of my favorite eps, still is.
Might be prejudiced because it was, I think, the first ep I ever saw

Well of course Terrible Secret is just the pilot and not even animated in the regular fashion, just Flash.

So, sure it's gonna be considered pretty mediocre by comparison.

Oh I know, but if I was asked after watching the pilot only for the first time if I would watch the show if made into a series, I probably would've answered with an unenthusiastic "maybe"

I remember watching the pilot when it first aired.....ah....me back in my youth....I remember loving the poopie joke so much that I hoped the series would be given a chance to make a season. I'm glad it did....and boy did it turn out to be a much better show than I ever expected.

I actually thought that penis was pretty lackluster. I thought "Doctor" was good for other reasons, though, so just sayin'.

SPHINX has nothing to do with NKC. Mike made that mistake too. There is no evidence of this yet at least. The snake men from Ice Station Impossible look much diferent.

Although it would be funny since SPHINX is a play on COBRA. Also, Sky Pilot and Holy Diver "slew" their demons of homosexuality. Although, it is possible that is a lie.

Careers in Science is an acquired taste, and if you understand one of the underlying themes of the show, how the "future of tomorrow' didn't turn out like the dreams its one of the better episodes of the series.

It's not that I hate the episode per se, but If I was to list all of the cannon episodes in order from favorite to least, "Are You There God, It's Me Dean" would be first, and "Careers In Science" would be last.

So far no one has actually talked about Handsome Ransom - which was a dandy of an episode and a real return (as Jackson said it would be) to "classic" Venture Bros. I love all the backstory and mythology prevalent in Season 3 but VB is at its best when its stripped down a bit and focusing on being a comedy show. That said, they still managed to throw in continuity and bits of mythology (the aforementioned Gargantua 2 ref. and Captain Sunshine's vendetta in general).
I don't really know why everyone hates on the Bud Manstrong episodes - Careers in Science is pretty dry when compared to almost any other VB ep but definitely has its moments and Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner is totally hilarious and way underrated (in my opinion). Also, why does everybody hate the Moppets? They're hilarious! Sure, they're creepy but that's so obviously the point. Venture Brothers is brimming with deplorable characters and it boggles my mind that in certain contexts this fact bothers people.

So I come out and say that the Manstrong eps are my least favorite, and now I hate them? So for everyone who keeps putting words in my mouth, allow me to explain---AGAIN!!

I do NOT hate CIS or GWCTSD. It's just that when I got mid-life chrysalis and ghosts of the Sargasso on the same disk as the former, and IKWTCBK or SACC1 and 2 on the same disk as the latter, can you blame me for skipping over those episodes?

Anyone who says they don't is a liar! A dirty rotten liar!!

This was an awesome episode! Great they got "Batman" to do the voice of Captain Sunshine. Very well written, great gags . . . everything! Also get to see a truly evil The Monarch!

I loved Careers in Science. Guess Who's Coming tried too hard . . . just did not work.

Sorry, Colonel Valor. I didn't mean to imply that you actually "hated" the Manstrong eps - it was more of a figure of speech (and you were not the only one to find said eps lacking so the comment was not directed solely at you). I am with Mysterious H in that I don't skip over these episodes while spinning Venture DVDs and Guess Who's Coming to State Dinner is actually among my favorites (I know, right? call me crazy) as Lincoln's ghost is goddamn hilarious.
As for Handsome Ransom - Kevin Conroy was epic and all of Hank's Batman references were perfect for his character and hilarious knowing jabs at Conroy's most famous gig. I don't think the Monarch was any more "truly evil" than he usually is. In fact, what was on display here was pure classic Monarch along the lines of Home Insecurity or Are You There God? Its me, Dean. We have essentially come full circle to the Monarch and Dr. G. arching the Venture family again (albeit with a far less deadly body guard standing in their way) setting up a return to old school VB dynamics. I wonder if we'll find out what caused Billy and Pete to receive the insurance settlement (or is this referencing something I am just forgetting?) or if Cap Sunshine (or the hilarious news team) will show up again? Great episode and a great start to the season so far!
Just a question though - where are all the prudes that were so offended by the Dr. Quymn episode last year? I still find it amusing that underage girls molesting Dean horrified so many people while all manor of implied pedophilia jokes seem to have no effect! Not that I'm complaining - the humor of VB is obviously dark and I enjoy every twisted joke that Jackson and/or Doc throws at us, I just find that type of comedy double standard strange.

Maybe not "truly evil" as in "more effectively evil The Monarch!"? "Home Insecurity" is more about the incompetence of his plans and henchmen and "Are You There God?" he is again shown to be rather pointless--other than arching Dr. Venture he . . . does . . . what?

I then launch into a long and tedious analysis of his confrontation of Dr. Sunshine and how it compares to his other plans--how he previously seems to mainly hate Dr. Venture but started to bore myself. So . . . meh! Anyways, the idea of The Monarch! just torching a kid as part of his dealing with breaking up is just deliciously evil.

As for people finding the Quymn Twins "horrifying" and this not--or Sgt. Hatred's obvious still present pedophilia--some people just cannot handle dark humor.

Okay, Venturoos. Here's what ya get for the Extras, at least on the DVD version. I felt it was a little light, but that's just my opinion. Deleted Scenes (as always) - Some are B&W sketches with the dialog, others are animated with the dialog. Ghost in the Pro-Blem - An extended view of the distorted images of events from the Pro-BLEM's point of view. Maybe there are some clues hidden in it if you like frame-by-frame advancing. Maybe not. Sirena Goes Off... - Cristin Milioti ad-libbing way more dialog than the script calls for. Poor Rocco. Promo - Basically the season 7 promo. Maybe there's Easter Eggs to find. I haven't done any extensive searching yet. If anyone finds any feel free to post them here!
