For those of you of the European persuasion (specifically those in the UK), it's worth noting that Turner has struck a deal with FX UK to bring adult swim to that network. This includes The Venture Bros. of course, so now watching it will be easy! Thanks to Mark Wilkinson for sending me that news.

Welcome back! Even though the first half of the season and the holidays are now over there's still some more stuff to do! I couldn't get everything I wanted in during December (for various reason) but technically this Five Years thing can last a whole year, right?

For now we have a little thing I whipped up something to display historical episode scores by you, the readers. I've been collecting votes since 2006 and this list shows monthly scores for the top fifteen episodes of every month from 2007 through 2009. Go check it out and let me know what you think!
November 13, 2009
Obviously I wouldn't be reporting on this if The Venture Bros. wasn't on this list, so let's just cut to the chase. It's in spot twenty-six:

If The Venture Bros. wasn't the best show of the 2000s, it was at least the most unexpected: Debuting on a network best known for funny-but-dust-thin stoner comedy, it quickly evolved into one of the most emotionally involving shows on television, showing real character growth, genuine depth of feeling, and a hefty thematic obsession with failure and disappointment.

You can also check out the full list instead of skipping directly to page three.

If that sneak peek clip wasn't enough for you, check out Adult Swim's promo for the episode:

Many thanks to long-time visitor The Mysterious 'H' for posting that.

Happened to catch this randomly, but Adult Swim's shop has four Venture-logo patches for $12. Included are the logos of Venture Industries, Sgt. Hatred, the Monarch and Molotov's Black Hearts. Also in case you missed it (I did) the Bill Sienkiewicz-painted artwork from the season three DVD is also available for purchase for a mere $24. As long as you like orange.

The long delayed Mantis-Eye seasonal (that's Venture Bros. seasonal) DVD giveaway is here, this time with a twist! Two winners instead of one! That's double the winners!

Enter the contest!

It's pretty self-explanatory, but the main idea is answer fifteen Venture-related questions, and the two people with the most correct answers will get to be first and second place (in the event of a tie, the winner will be picked randomly). First place gets to pick one of the two fabulous prizes (season three DVD and soundtrack vinyl as chosen in this poll) and second place gets the leftover one. Pretty simple, right? I tried to make the questions at least a tiny bit difficult, but the answers should all be findable on this site, so sleuth away. So get to it! Entries will be accepted for two weeks until midnight Pacific time (that's 3am Eastern) on May 22nd!

As part of the bevy of season three DVD promo interviews, the A.V. Club has a pretty good interview with Jackson. Sample:

I can after a while. I try to safeguard myself from doing that. I mean, it's easier sometimes to write in that vein than it is to challenge yourself to come up with a new villain or a new place to go or a new set of circumstances, a self-contained, good story. You know, all your souls, you have to keep them sharp. It's good to go back and really delve into things, it's good to get away from them sometimes. I probably am more inclined to take it a little too seriously, I think my approach is to make the funniest James Bond movie ever. [Laughs.] I think Doc approaches it differently, he's more concerned about comedy and the characters, and I'm more plot-oriented than him. I think he's way better at dialogue and comedy than I am. You end up with a good balance over the course of a season. I wouldn't want all of them to be the way I write, and I wouldn't want all of them to be the way he writes, but both are totally what the Venture Brothers are, and what Venture Bros. needs. When we write together, it's a pretty good balance.

... or a Blu-Ray. Jackson updated with some tidbits about the upcoming season and how it's coming in two parts. He also included a nifty new background painting for immediate consumption (do not take painting orally). Also he notes that you really should buy the season three DVD and/or Blu-Ray because that would make him happy, and when he's happy, you're happy. Capisce?
Discussion threads make a comeback in '09 for one night only! Well, until season four starts at least. At any rate, if you've got something to say about the just-released season three DVD and/or Blu-Ray or the soundtrack CD/vinyl then here's the place to say it! My copies are still in the mail, though I expect my DVD to show up today. As is the norm I will also eventually be running a season three giveaway with the usual bevy of ridiculous questions. So stay tuned for that!

Also since I forgot to mention it, there's a new poll up for your voting pleasure. It's in the sidebar or you can just go directly to it if that's your thing.

Update (5:55pm EST): Hey, guess what just showed up!

March 19, 2009
Cool interview with JP & Doc over at Animation World Magazine. As always you're provided with some insight into the series (season three's outcome and what might happen in season four) as well as some interesting tidbits about season four's format:

One big change for season four is that it's being split up into two sets of eight instead of one set of 13. "The first eight should be on the air this fall," Publick offered. "We're just finishing making those. We're going to write for a while and start our production again in the summer to hopefully get the back eight maybe by the following summer. So you get three more episodes and you get stuck waiting six months in between them, which is better than the year we usually had to wait."

So that's something I didn't know anyway. Enjoy!
February 26, 2009
Bundled with the upcoming Season 3 Blu-Ray release (and presumably sold separately) will be a much-lauded soundtrack, as you may know. A track list has finally surfaced (or maybe it surfaced a while ago, but it's the first I'm hearing of it) so you can lament that you don't yet own the damned thing and also maybe guess which tracks are which:
  1. Brock Graveside
  2. Tuff
  3. Tensssacts
  4. 13 BigMon / Boys as Transformers
  5. Node Wrestling
  6. Thunder-Bro
  7. Damion
  8. Assclamp!
  9. Mississippi Noir
  10. VB1 Spag
  11. Bolly
  12. Gawker
  13. Descension
  14. Warped Carousel
  15. Sexy Sultry
  16. In a spaceage Mood
  17. X1 Krashi / woozzy
  18. Warped Span
  19. Fumblestealth
  20. VB Theme
The DVD and Blu-Ray come out on March 24th in the US, in case you needed a reminder.

IGN has a quick article covering the Venture Bros panel. As expected most of the news is about the upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release since there isn't a huge amount of info on season four just yet. They are hopeful that episodes will begin sometime later this year, however, so things seem to be on track.
December 6, 2008
Season 3 Blu-RayIn spite of all the skepticism revolving around season three's probability of being released on Blu-Ray (even though it was produced in HD) it appears that it will in fact get an HD release along with the standard fare DVD set. IGN has a story along with two product-shot mockups showing off the old Atari game box style the sets will carry.

Arriving at retail as a two-disc box set on both platforms for the suggested retail prices of $29.98 and $44.98, respectively, The Venture Bros. Season 3 features all 13 uncensored episodes from the show's highly popular third season and bonus material including deleted scenes and commentary. Additionally, the Blu-ray disc box set will be packaged with an exclusive CD which includes 20 tracks that comprise the full musical score from the television series' third season.

So there you go! The site says the release date is March 24, 2009, so there's a while to wait, but Blu-Ray fans and Playstation 3 owners rejoice.

Update: In celebration of this momentous event there's a new poll (or vote in the sidebar).
October 28, 2008
Hey guys! In some semblance of an effort to supply any content here's a link to The 10 Bloodiest Moments of 2008 as decried by Adult Swim. Two of them are from season three of Venture Bros., so there's reason to celebrate! Woo!
October 6, 2008
For those of you with a Playstation 3, season 3 was recently added. So if you'd like you can grab those. I can't find any confirmation, but it's also probable that the episodes are HD since the versions up on Live Arcade for the XBox 360 are HD.

AS has put up around 7 minutes of stuff from the VB Dragon*Con panel. Check it:

September 2, 2008
Many thanks to Toon Zone for posting a brief summary of the VB panel at this years Dragon-Con. Some highlights if you click through (still trying to avoid spoilers on the front page) including the future of characters, small clarifications, some DVD news and of course genitalia jokes.

September 1, 2008
After much deliberation and the spending $22 I have judged the Win A T-Shirt Contest and, behold, it was good. And stuff. Either way, a man named Sid with a band named The Grocery Boys won (you can go to his myspace to hear the song if you don't want to wait for it to download). However, pretty much everyone who entered provided some quality entries which I recommend you check out.
August 31, 2008
Last one of the season. You guys know the drill. Enjoy!
August 30, 2008
In case you were wondering why this weekend feels strangely... empty... it's probably because it's the first time in thirteen weeks that there's no new Venture Bros. episodes to discuss or speculate about. I know it's hard, but a lot of us have been there before. And hey, at least this time we know there's another season to come. The ends of season one and two brought about some of the most epic waits in television history.

And so we have our final discussion for season three. Talk about the season here as well as your hopes and dreams and speculations for the future. Pop on over to Adult Swim Video and check out clips and full episodes (currently Family that Slays Pt II and Mid-life Chrysalis) and wait for the season three DVD. Also if you want a free shirt there are like twenty-one hours left for a chance to win one. I've already gotten a bunch of awesome entries, though sadly I don't have enough cash to get everyone a shirt. The winner will be announced tomorrow (or Sunday) and I'll probably post all the rest of the entries as well.

Until then, enjoy, and try not to panic. It'll be back before you know it.

In their series of 'Ode to...' videos, Adult Swim has put up one in honor of the mighty 21 and 24 and all their selfless sacrifices. Enjoy! (Also spoilers if you haven't seen the last episode yet).

August 27, 2008
Hey kids! With the end of season three and the shirt club and, uh, some other stuff, I decided to commemorate (the more somber version of celebrating) with a contest. This is the first one that doesn't involve answering questions to win a DVD, so that's pretty exciting too. Note that this contest is kinda spoilery if you haven't seen the finale yet.

Head on over to the contest page for the full scoop, but essentially you need to make some kind of homage to everyone's favorite henchman. You know who. The contest ends at 6pm EST on Saturday, so there's not a ton of time to make something super complex, so don't go too nuts. The winner will get the very last Shirt Club shirt in their preferred the size and gender-focus.

Feel free to post your entries in the comments here if you don't mind other people seeing them (or if you want some criticism), though don't forget to enter it in the contest if you do that. Anyway, have fun and go make some awesome stuff!
August 25, 2008
It's immensely spoilery, so I won't post the usual image here, so you'll have to click to see it. However as always, get it at the shirt club for $22 (or possibly more), as usual. Archives here if you need them (obviously don't go there if you haven't seen the final episode yet).
August 23, 2008
The last episode of the season is up on Adult Swim Video. As always, talk about it here and rate it on the capsule page after you view it. And of course the comments will contain some spoilers, so don't read them if you don't want stuff spoiled.

Even Jackson implores you not to spoil anything! Even this week's shirt club will be going up a half hour later than normal to ensure it doesn't spoil anything. It's gonna be awesome! Enjoy!
August 22, 2008
Hey. Hey you. Yeah, you. I hear you love capsules. Your friend told me so. Let me know if this one is okay. It's got extra screen shots! Sweet!
August 18, 2008
Shirt Club! This week's shirt is Molotov's Black Hearts logo, which actually isn't even in this week's episode (though it will appear next week). As an added bonus if you buy the girl shirt you get two bucks off! So that's $20 for domestic, $23 for international. Also it's a white tank-top! Men shirts still cost full price, and it's a black t-shirt.

The Usual Place has a new update. Mainly Jackson wants to tell you to watch the latest episode on AS.com Video since it contains an extra scene that won't be seen on the air tomorrow. Aside from that there's some news on season four, which has been delayed slightly thanks to extreme burn-out, though one episode is nearly done and even guest stars Batman himself, Kevin Conroy! Also some shirt club and con news (both Jackson and Doc will be at Dragon-Con instead of just Doc) and more!
Uh, discussion. Longest episode title (and episode in general) ever. Anyways, for those of you paying attention the episode is up on AS.com video for your enjoyment. As is the custom you can talk about the episode (or the series in general) in the comments here and if you haven't seen it yet beware of spoilers!

Also of note is the episode on Adult Swim's website is a full two minutes longer than the one that will be airing on Adult Swim this Sunday at 11:30pm EST. So you really ought to check it out on the internet. Unless you are a sad person not in the US because AS doesn't let you guys watch unless you are a trickster. Anyway, enjoy! Oh yeah, and be sure to rate the episode on the capsule page if you get a chance!

Head over to Adult Swim's site to check out another in-season commentary from Jackson and Doc for ORB. I haven't finished listening to it yet, but I'm sure it's highly insightful or possibly meandering and hilarious. Either way you're in for a treat!
August 11, 2008
This week's shirt is the mostly expected Rusty Venture Cartoon t-shirt! Proudly worn by quizboys and girls across the nation, this logo comes on a white and black ringer (with the black being the rings). As always, $22 for everyone who is not foreign or a giant (and slightly more if you are) and subscribers wait for it to show up.

Alrighty here's your discussion thread for Orb which is the final episode before season three's two-part finale. As always there will be spoilers so if you don't want to know what happened before you see it then stay out. Oh, I guess you want to know that the episode is up on Adult Swim Video. The episode also leaked a few days ago so I know some of you have already seen it. All I ask is you refrain from mentioning how you got it. There are plenty of other sites on the world wide web were that sort of thing can be talked about, so let's keep it on those sites and stick with talking about the show here.
August 7, 2008
It's up. Enjoy and feel free to mention any changes/additions I should make here.
August 6, 2008
Adult Swim.com has put up a bunch of highlights from the VB panel at San Diego Comic Con last week. The panel included only Jackson and Mike Sinterniklaas, but it was still chock full of goodness. Check it out:

August 4, 2008

Finally, the shirt you've been waiting for since The Invisible Hand of Fate! OSI logo on a plain white shirt. What more could you want? As always, $22+ depending on size and non-US locations or just wait for it to show up if you're a subscriber. And as always I feel the need to link to the archive I made because that way you can lament not buying the Guild shirt like I do. Every day.

Now Museum -- Now You Don't! capsule/notes/screenshots. Old news by now, I know, but finally done. As always suggestions or pointing out how dumb I am are (is?) welcome.
August 1, 2008
I was about to make an update that would post itself at 6pm but I peeked at AS.com and noticed that The Lepidopterists is already up for your viewing pleasure. So, as is the custom, use the comments in this article to talk about the episode, beware of spoilers if you haven't seen it yet and try to be civil. Oh and maybe perhaps go rate the episode on the capsule page after you watch it? Hmmm? Enjoy, kids!

This is just a quick update with nothing too important, but since I was away for the weekend I am way behind with the capsule and notes and such (meaning I haven't even started them yet). Hopefully I will start on it tonight, but in the meantime if you want to help feel free to post whatever crazy references you spotted in the comments here. Hopefully this won't be as long as the many weeks it took me to get the Cremation Creek II stuff up.
July 28, 2008
If you check the MSN TV guide as much as I do (since it's generally the first place to get the titles of the episodes) you may already know that the final three episodes of the season have been named. After next week's The Lepidopterists (thanks to Jackson for the title correction), the eleventh episode of the season is ominously called Orb. In a similar vein to season two, this season appears to end with a two-parter named The Family That Slays Together, Stays Together, which is pretty much the longest episode title ever, so I have arbitrarily decided to break the name into two pieces corresponding to each episode. I'll probably figure something out once everything is clarified, but until then, enjoy!
by Mike - (7:49am EST) - 10 Comments
This week's shirt is the snazzy original Team Venture logo, or more precisely the original Venture Industries logo which was used by the original Team Venture. I think. Either way, logo is on a light blue shirt with navy blue highlights. Good stuff.

As always, $22 for the shirt and shipping (add a little more for XXL or international) or just wait for it to show up if you're a subscriber.
July 26, 2008
Hey, here we are, another week, another new episode. The latest episode, Now Museum, Now You Don't! should be up on Adult Swim.com Video for your viewing pleasure. Talk about it in the comments here, but beware of evil spoilers if you haven't watched it yet. Also note I'll be away this weekend (though I will have a computer), but I'll return Sunday night-ish. Have a good time, kids!

Edit (July 27th, 3:06am): Voting is now open on the capsule page, and uh, that's it for now I guess.

It's up! You guys know what to do. Also I put up another poll where you can pick your favorite episode of the second third of the season. Or if you are too lazy to click you can vote in the sidebar over to the right.
July 21, 2008
You wish! Venture Bros. Shirt Club of The Week shirt this week is actually a classy Dr. Girlfriend black and white logo on a black shirt. As always, $22 in the US, $25 everywhere else (add a buck for XXL). Head on over to purchase it. Also don't forget the old Shirt Club Archive I threw together if you need to remember the old shirts for some reason.

July 19, 2008
Hey kids it's that's time again. Doc Hammer penned Tears of a Sea Cow is up on Adult Swim Video for your viewing pleasure. After you've watched it you can come in here and ramble endlessly with other Venture-fans about the episode or the series. As always there are spoilers within, so don't peek if you don't want to know. Also feel free to give the episode your approval (or disapproval) on the capsule page if you like. Enjoy!
July 16, 2008
Just finished it. I notice that the notes section is looking kind of slim. You guys should do something about that, perhaps? Yes?
July 14, 2008
Oh hey, did I mention there's a new shirt today? Sometimes I find it early and sometimes I totally forget about it. This week's shirt club offering is a lovely asphalt gray number with the Order of the Traid logo (featured whenever the Triad decides to use it, such as here, for example). As always $22 unless you're in need of XXL or if you don't live in the US, in which case you'll need to pay a few extra bucks. You guys know the drill by now I'm sure. Also shirts should be arriving in full swing by now. I got my shirt for week two (Killinger logo) last week so there's been a roughly four week lag. Enjoy!
July 12, 2008
Remember him? Do you? Well he updated his site with some news on season three's last-minute production (they are pretty much finishing editing right before the episodes go up online it seems) and early production on season four. The first script of his for an episode titled 'Handsome Ransom', is already done! Also next week's episode is called 'Tears of a Sea Cow'. Also vague DVD news. Also ratings (they have been good this season, but not as good as Family Guy reruns). Also just go read it.
Hey it's that time again! If you're reading this that means the latest episode is up on AS.com. That episode being What Goes Down, Must Come Up for those of you paying attention.

As always you can use the comments to talk about the episode and concoct various conspiracy theories and such. There will be spoilers, so if you haven't seen the episode yet you might want to stay away (unless you don't mind being spoiled). Also try to keep it civil! We are all fans of the same cartoon television show, let's not forget. Oh, and be sure to rate the episode after you've watched it!

Edit: 12:23pm (Sat.) - Okay you can actually rate the episode now. Sorry about that.
July 8, 2008
I am willing to bet I can mangle each episode of the season for the 'capsule done' updates, and if not I am sure as hell going to try. Anyways, Dr. Quymn capsule/notes/screenshots are up. As always let me know about anything I missed (I always miss some stuff) or whatever else you want.
July 7, 2008
by Mike - (7:03am EST) - 19 Comments
This week's offering, which amazingly enough is not the expected Dr. Quymn logo (which was a stylized pink 'Q' seen on her jet and jeep door) but a celebration of Dean!

As always you can buy it for $22 from the site (or just wait for it to show up if you subscribed) and feel free to check out the archive I put up if you want to see historic shirt club data.

First off last night I finally finished The Buddy System capsule and notes and such. So you can bitch about stuff I missed here, or e-mail me if you're shy.

Secondly the old MSN episode guide has revealed yet another tentative episode title: The Lepidopteriot, a name which will probably change between now and the actual air date. Thanks to Nais for mentioning that one to me.
Adult Swim has apparently pushed their normal Friday release of new episodes online to Thursday, I assume for the holiday weekend in the US. As such you can watch the latest Venture Bros. episode and talk about it in the comments here. As always, There Will Be Spoilers so stay away if you don't want to deal with that. Also don't forget you can rate the episode on the capsule page when you're done watching. Enjoy the weekend!
July 1, 2008
On account of seeing Wall-E and other obligations this weekend I sadly totally forgot about the latest shirt of the week which was, as many predicted, Dr. Venture's camp logo:

Also on a quick site-related note I haven't actually started the capsule/notes/etc for The Buddy System yet (normally I start Saturday morning) so they may come later than normal this week.
June 28, 2008
As is the custom, you should be able to find The Buddy System on Adult Swim.com's video section. Use the comments here to talk about it! And of course, there will be spoilers, so if you haven't seen it yet, stay out of the comments (unless you don't mind being spoiled). Enjoy the weekend!

Update: Apparently the AS.com video is having some issues. The second part is corrupt and will stop working with 2:41 left. What you can do is watch the following clips in order: Hi, Buddy!, Unbeatable Advice, Just Say The Word! and E-Den. Once the last one finishes you can skip to the third part of the main show. Many thanks to cuavsfan in the comments for finding that fix.

AS finally released their fall schedule through early October. Most notably the airing order for the final four episodes of the season, though none of them have official names yet (one of them was tentatively titled 'The Ant Farm'). Aside from that when season three finishes up on August 24th, the entire series will be airing every weeknight at 12:30am (EST/PST) starting with the pilot. So if you missed a season or just want to rewatch from the start mark your calendars for September 1st. Full schedule with episode names is here as always.
June 23, 2008
As expected, Sgt. Hatred related:

As always, get one at the shirt club for $22 (including shipping) or if you are already a subscriber it will show up at your house in a couple of weeks without you having to do anything.
June 21, 2008
...of hate? Maybe? Anywho, if you're reading this that means it's at least 6:00pm EST and the latest episode of the Venture Bros. is up on Adult Swim Video for your viewing pleasure. This week's offering is "Home Is Where The Hate Is" and according to Jackson it's possibly the most beautifully animated episode of the season! Use these comments to talk about the episode and remember that if you aren't planning on watching it until Sunday night you should probably avoid reading them unless you don't mind being spoiled. Enjoy!
June 17, 2008

This week's offering is a Billy Quizboy shirt with the Quizboys logo, which was featured mostly on Pete White's jacket in this episode. As always subscribers get their shirt when they ship, or you can order it for $22 (including shipping) if you didn't subscribe.

Also worth noting is I have a Shirt Club archive I threw together if you need a quick reference and are too lazy to actually leave this site for some reason. Enjoy!
June 14, 2008
JP has an update relaying his thoughts and hopes on the episode, which apparently was originally planned for last season but due to Cremation Creek becoming two episodes it was pushed back to this year. There's also mucho information on the shirt club for those of you wondering when you'll get your stuff.
It's that time of the week again, kids. The Invisible Hand of Fate should now be up on Aduld Swim Video for your viewing pleasure. The episode will also air on that television device in a much higher quality at 11:30pm on Sunday. Talk about the episode in the comments here! As always, there will probably be spoilers so if you don't want to be spoiled then only venture in after you have seen the episode. And happy father's day to any dads out there!

It's up, though I don't have as many notes as I'd like but feel free to e-mail some to me or post them in the comments. Also I'm trying something new with the screencaps. Instead of just resizing them for the sidebar I'm doing fancy crops now because the resized widescreen shots look too small to me. The full sized ones are unaltered of course. Tell me what you think!
June 10, 2008
Screenwriter Todd Alcott (who offers many commentaries on many Venture Bros. episodes on his blog) has posted his thoughts on The Doctor is Sin. While I don't agree with the entirety of his assessments and interpretations, it's definitely an excellent read and will surely provide some food for thought on what was easily one of the most well written episodes the series has to offer. Check it out or read the rest of his musings if you wish.

Update at the usual place with some stuff on The Doctor is Sin, including awesome animation flubs and production nightmares. Also for those curious, season four production has already started:

Am still writing my first solo script for Season 4. Which is terrifying because we're starting production on Season 4 a week from Monday. Writing's been difficult because we're currently editing episode 35 of Season 3, World Leaders has just moved its offices to another floor, we've been doing a lot of interviews lately, we just got the first take of our finale episode back from Korea, and we're in the middle of a wicked heat wave here in New York. Just don't tell my producer on me.

Jackson also notes that Shadowman 9 received the highest ratings the show has gotten to date, which is true. AS's ratings bumper showed 884,000 viewers, which bests the previous high of 698,000 by a good amount.
Since it's my civic duty to track everything involving the Venture Bros. thanks to this web site, I feel I should inform everyone that Jackson made a post here clarifying the upcoming episode titles.

Yup...somehow or another, the working titles of some of this season's episodes made their way out into the public sphere while they were still only half-baked. Next week's episode is officially titled "The Invisible Hand of Fate," and the following week will be "Home Is Where The Hate Is." After that will be "Dr. Quymn, Medicine Woman," "The Buddy System," and "What Goes Down, Must Come Up." I couldn't tell you the names of any past those since we haven't finished editing them yet, and that's pretty much when we decide what the official title will be.

Note that there are three other episode titles out there Murder O-Clock, Now Museum -- Now You Don't! and The Ant Farm which were seen on storyboards, meaning they are also non-final titles. So now you know! Everyone thank Uncle Jackson.

The next Shirt Club design will be Dr. Henry Killinger's logo as a pocket crest (though I assume the shirt doesn't have a pocket). The design isn't live on the site yet but I'm going to be a total jerk (as well as a top Internet sleuth) and post it here. The shirt will be available for purchase at the shirt club site at 11:30pm EST when the episode first airs on your television box. Enjoy!

As may be the case, the AS Schedule seems to have changed the name of next week's episode, formerly Billy Quizboy and the Invisible Hand to Invisible Hand of Fate. It's also possible the episode was swapped for another but given the similarity of the titles I would imagine that Billy Quizboy and the Invisible Hand was a working title that was changed because it, perhaps, gives away something about the plot. I'm just making guesses here though. Either way you have been informed.

Finally the wait is over! A season three episode of the Venture Brothers that actually has the Venture brothers in it! As with every week, use the comments to say whatever you want about The Doctor is Sin. The episode should be up on Adult Swim.com in the videos section right now and will play on TV at 11:30pm on Sunday. The comments will probably contain spoilers, so don't read them if you don't want to know what happens!
June 6, 2008
For those of you who missed it on TV or don't want to (or can't?) watch it on Adult Swim.com (it's still up there for another couple of hours), Shadowman 9 is up on iTunes. So now you can enjoy it on your iPod or iPhone on the bus or something.

I'm a little late on this but thanks to Sean Donnelly in comments for posting this. the AV Club interviewed Jackson prior to season three's start. It goes into the writing process and what makes characters tick and all that sort of thing. It's pretty interesting stuff, so you should check it out. I'll leave you with a snip:

I think it's more fun to grow to love characters who are flawed than it is to present perfect characters. Perfect characters aren't very funny. Certainly my friends are a strange, intense bunch of people, and people's families drive them crazy, but challenging relationships are always more rewarding. It was always our goal to have Dr. Venture be kind of the central character and be kind of an asshole, but somebody that you eventually grow to love. He's a mouthpiece for your snottiest, innermost thoughts, and he can also be a target for cathartic release when he's being too much of an asshole.

For those keeping track I have the Shadowman 9 capsule/notes/screenshots in the usual place. Since it's been a while you should know that if you have any additional notes or corrections you can send them to me (or post them in the comments here if you want). I've been sort of lax with a lot of previous e-mails but I'm going to try to keep up as long as the season goes on, and eventually I'll get to that big folder of stuff for season one and two.

Also while I am here I just realized I am retarded and totally broke the random image below the logo. It was only loading the first nine, even though there were nineteen of them. I fixed that now and also added a new one as I often do. Not very exciting, I know, but I was wondering why I never saw Batman Hank any more.

I know Shadowman 9 hasn't even aired yet, but the third episode of the season (after The Doctor is Sin) will be called 'Billy Quizboy and the Invisible Hand'. You may begin speculating on what will happen in that episode... now! Also don't forget the Shadowman 9 discussion thread right below here. Enjoy!

Edit (11:33pm): Thanks to Kuiosikle in the comments for mentioning this thread on PRoV which has some more episode names:
  • My Dinner With Hatred - June 22, 2008
  • Enter the Bad Seed - June 29, 2008
  • Dr. Guymn, Medicine Woman - July 6, 2008
Sadly no source for these yet, but I'll totally add them when I find a source. The lack of pre-knowing all the episodes titles this season is kind of a bummer.

Update #2: (1:55am) - Nais over on the VB Wiki was nice enough to post his source, so I'm pretty confident these are accurate. Awesome sleuthing!
May 31, 2008
Since these were fairly popular last season (you know, back in 2006) I'll be putting them up this season for each episode as well. You can use the comments here to post whatever you want about the season three premiere episode. If you're wondering why it's up at 6pm (EST) on Friday it's because that's when the episode gets put up on Adult Swim.com in the video section.

If you haven't seen the episode yet and don't want it to be spoiled you are advised not to read these comments! There may be spoilers present! You have been warned!
May 30, 2008
With two days to go before TV and, uh, like six hours to go before Internet, here's an early scene from the premiere that AS released. It may just tide you over.

It's brief, but there's some good stuff and info on season three:

Will we ever learn what Dr. Girlfriend told the Monarch on their wedding night?
You learn it in the premiere. We just don't state it verbatim. What is this show if not setup and a debilitatingly disappointing revelation?

Thanks to Alex for sending me the link.

If you answered yes to that, uh, one question, then you may want to check out the Official Venture Bros. The Amazing Shirt of the Week Club! Exclamation point! For $250 you get one new shirt based on the episode that aired, plus a free shirt for subscribers. Or, if you don't wish to augment your wardrobe with fourteen Venture Bros. shirts, you can pick and choose and buy them individually for $22 each (which includes shipping), though you relinquish your rights to the free shirt. The shirt relating to Shadowman 9 is a pretty awesome Guild of Calamitous Intent logo as seen below.

While not complete by any means, Adult Swim has once again updated their crazy schedule so that it contains the first nine episodes of season three. No names have been given but it displays the production numbers as to tantalize and possibly confuse you. I've update the Mantis-Eye schedule accordingly, and I even added empty capsules for all the upcoming episodes, though they don't provide any useful information.

It's also worth noting that the eighth and ninth episode titles were leaked on storyboard artist Stephen DeStefano's blog back in December (scroll down to the bottom to see them). So there you have Murder O'Clock and Now Museum -- Now You Don't!. Another episode title, The Ant Farm, was also leaked but not the production number associated with it, so I can't do much with that aside from speculate that we may finally see giant ant monsters. Finally.
In celebration of season three starting in (roughly) one week, you may want to check out some articles:
  • Animation Insider - "Team Venture returns very soon to late night animation hub Adult Swim for a third season. Packing all of the action, adventure and wedgies that one expects in a season premiere of The Venture Bros., this coming June 2008 will see the hilarious parody quest animation kicking off another stretch of new episodes."

  • AWN - "Once the boys leave home, they inevitably find themselves in danger. Doc Venture's work takes the family everywhere from a space station to the Bermuda Triangle and the slums of Tijuana. But when your father has enemies like The Monarch, there is bound to be trouble. It's a good thing that muscle-bound Brock Samson, the family's bodyguard, is around to deliver his brutal form of vengeance."

...is the name of the season premiere. Just in case you were wondering.

As if you haven't had enough of this crap already, here are a couple text-based rundowns of the VB panel the other day. If there are any more to be had I'll add them to this update rather than making a new one:

Over at the Venture Bros. LJ Fan Site kuiosikle (who also posts in the comments here from time to time) has posted some pretty good quality videos of the Venture Bros panel at NY Comic Con last weekend. It's kinda like being there!
Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you can check out the extra-special NY Comic Con preview even if you didn't attend. Granted it's in a tiny window with crappy YouTube compression and shaky-cam and uh, someone's head is kinda in the way, but you get the general idea:

I think the word you are looking for is 'awesome'. Also check out the related videos for portions of the Q&A.

Edit (April 24 at 5:21pm): There's an official version of this at Quick Stop Entertainment, or you can click on through to see it here if you want.

So for those of you following I managed to get into NY Comic Con yesterday just in time to see the Venture Bros panel. My train to the city got in at 3:40pm and I managed to get to the Javits Center by around 3:55 or so. By 4:01 (according to my twitter feed) I was informed they were sold out of Saturday only tickets (but I could purchase a weekend pass for only $20 more), but they were attempting to get more, plus I was fifth on line so I stood a good chance of getting in. At 4:20 the extra tickets came out from where ever they were hiding and I attempted to find the proper room!

Expecting to be 20 minutes late I was actually early because apparently the line for the room had been so long they had to swap with another panel to get a bigger room. Thusly the half hour delay.

That's when the fun began!
April 3, 2008
Okay, not really, but Jackson has an update on it (thanks Gumby!) with his and Doc's thoughts on Adult Swim's crazy airing of the episode (which will be the second episode of the season to air, meaning June 8th):

[If you had tuned in] you would have been witness to the first 11 minutes of episode #28 ("The Doctor Is Sin") in its rawest form: a low resolution, straight-from-Korea "first take" with no sound effects, no music, and a ton of mistakes. Notorious perfectionist control freaks that we are, Doc and I were...somewhat less-than-thrilled when we heard the news (and even less than less-than-thrilled to have learned it from the viewers, not the network, and only after the fact). To us it was the psychological equivalent of having naked pictures of ourselves circulated on the internet.

Jackson has also provided some more shots of season three, and there's a ton of extra info there as well. For example writing for season four will apparently start within a reasonable timeframe, meaning there probably won't be a huge gap between seasons three and four, which is nothing short of a miracle. Go forth!
As I mentioned yesterday, on March 31st AS aired the first half of The Doctor is Sin during their April Fool's extravaganza (which, among other premiers, included a brand new episode of Metalocalypse). It was a rough cut, so animation and voice were the only things present. The lack of sound effects and music, as well as any post-production cleanup made it sort of eerie at times, but the comedy remained. At any rate, due to the unorthodox airing, I'm not going to write up a proper capsule until it airs in full. However I have posted some (non-spoiler) screenshots so it's not a total loss if you missed it. Take solace in knowing that season three is only two months away.
April 2, 2008
Apparently I missed this a while back, but some storyboards on Stephen DeStefano's blog (which, by the way, is full of awesome stuff that you should check out) spilled the names of some future episode names/numbers. According to the AS schedule episode 32 is the first episode airing (which coincides with Jackson mentioning that they wrote the premiere sixth), so there's no way to know when any of these will air, but here's some info for you nonetheless:

28 - The Doctor is Sin
24 - Murder O'Clock
35 - Now Museum - Now You Don't
?? - The Ant Farm

Remember, those are production numbers, so the episodes will air in a different order.

Also it's worth a mention that a rough cut of The Doctor is Sin aired on the night of March 31st (technically April 1st). I haven't been able to check it out yet myself, but I will be watching it tonight (thanks to the miracle of DVR) and I should have some screen grabs of it tonight for you guys. That's about it for now.
March 31, 2008
While there's been no formal announcement that I have noticed (dear god someone correct me if that's wrong), if you check out the latest AS TV schedule (which was revised on March 26th), you will note if you look at the June 1st at 11:30pm (EST) slot you see 'Venture Bros 32 (p)'. I assume the (p) stands for 'pending', however (cuavsfan pointed out the (p) means 'premier', thanks dude!) An early June premiere sits well with everything we've heard about production, so rejoice, hooray! Mark your calenders for unnamed Venture Brothers episode #32!

By the way not to confuse anyone, but the 32 is the production number, meaning it was the 32nd episode written, however it takes place 27th in the series (with Cremation Creek II being 26th). It's also worth noting that the schedule is subject to change, but either way this can be taken as a good indicator of things to come.
Popshifter has posted an interview with Venture Bros. music dude JG Thirwell. It's a lengthy interview, but it covers a bunch of Venture-related things as well as the non-animated series portion of Thirlwell's career.

What are you currently working on or with? Is 2008 shaping up to be as busy as the last two years?

I am preparing a Venture Bros. soundtrack album.

Also a Foetus album of archival minimal recordings made between 1980 and 1983 (some radically updated or redone where the quality of the original is bad or unfinished). This will be packaged as a digipack with a 48-page booklet of minimal artworks.

And also a new Foetus studio album for release in 2009.

I'm also working on the score of season three of The Venture Bros.

Read the whole thing for more.

Yep, new batch of awesome over at The Usual Place. You get the usual production infos, plus a bounty of screen grabs and even a contest where you can win stuff! Or at least you could have if the winners hadn't already won both prizes. Sorry.

But now that that's out of the way, let's begin speculation on all the characters in that group shot, shall we?
November 29, 2007
Nice little update at Jackson's blog with a few new screengrabs of some stuff fresh from Korea and ready to be, uh, post-produced. Also word that the third season will probably start around June, which is a slight push backwards from what everyone was guessing, but not too horrible. And hey, season four has already been greenlit and will begin production shortly after season three, so there actually might not be two years between seasons! Imagine that!
Indeed, this is the last wallpaper you will get, so enjoy! That's pretty much all I have to say about that.

Hey this is the one where the hero is all old and poor and retarded and some young punk screws him over after he takes him as his own son! Did you guys hear they made a new one?

How long can I keep up with the lame sequel jokes? We'll have to find out! Actually it turns out this time and once more and then I run out of wallpapers. Anyway, enjoy the offering de jour, and have a happy Thanksgiving if you happen to be in the US... otherwise have a great Thursday, okay?

So my prior information trolling duties used to include poking around the comments of Jackson's blog, however I've been skirting those duties for various reasons... until tonight. Here are a couple tidbits you might be interested in.

First off that ominous shot of a bloody Jonas venture in a cave turned out to actually be Jonas, in case there was any question:

(I was kind of surprised nobody said anything about the Jonas shot myself!)

Next up some extra info about the show being made in HD:

We're drawing the show in the 16:9 ratio and keeping the important action within the 4:3 "TV safety" window. I have no idea yet if we're pulling this off successfully, having not seen any footage back yet. Also, I'm not sure how we'll handle the pre-titles opening scenes, which we've traditionally put a fake letterbox on. Adding to my ignorance, I'm not even sure adultswim broadcasts in HD anywhere yet--but the DVDs will sure look nice.

To add to that, Cartoon Network HD is available if you have DirectTV, but currently no other providers carry it. Continuing this theme, here's a brief thought about releading a HD version of the season 3 DVD:

Honestly, I seriously doubt adultswim will spring for an HD or BluRay release at this point. But we'll at least make sure the DVD features the episodes in their widescreen aspect ratio.

And what about things to appear (or not) in the upcoming season?

As for Underbheit, he almost got a cameo in one episode but we couldn't fit him in (for the record, he got more play in Season 2 than he did in Season 1!). Consider him in exile, wandering the earth in search of a new dominion.

And not to break your heart over and over, but sorry...no Keenan and Kel jokes that I can recall. Maybe a Dune joke or two?

You'll be pleased to know that Holy Diver eventually made his way into an episode.

And what about the ever-present Star Wars references?

If it makes you feel any better, Doc and I had a gentlemanly disagreement just today, while recording an episode, over what constitutes an official Star Wars reference. It seems that one or two jokes we made in this upcoming season could be construed as goofs on that most celebrated space epic, though the verdict is still out. So, there's new hope. But I can at least guarantee 98% less Star Wars references this season.

And finally, when the crap does this season even start, anyway?

I'm actually not sure. Late spring, I think. We don't start delivering finished episodes to the network until January, and then it's one every two weeks after that. Usually they wait until we have 7 or 8 of them finished before airing the first one (they have to wait until we have at least six, because our premier is the sixth episode we're making). So that puts us into at least April, maybe later.

So there you go. Now you don't have to root through those pesky comments yourself!
October 11, 2007
Brand new update over at Jackson's detailing what's going on with season three. Writing is done, storyboarding and animatic-ing are in full swing and directing and other post production will be starting very shortly!

Now that I can look back on a full 13 scripts, I can truthfully say it will be a weird season. We dug deeper than we have before, told richer stories, took some chances (we'll see if they pay off), and, as promised in the commentary for the Season Two DVD, made no intentional Star Wars references. I think we managed to hit just about every semi-important character who's appeared before (with the exception of Baron Ünderbheit--might as well tell you now), including some Season 1 favorites who didn't get much play in season 2. And we introduced plenty of new ones, adding multiple layers of backstory (and forwardstory) to the Team Venture saga.

And of course the usual bevy of backgrounds which promise to turn to stills when animated episodes begin coming in from Korea in a month or so. In HD. Yes, HD.

For those of you keeping track, episodes take around 10 months to animate, meaning if everything stays on track the final episode of the season will be done in about a year, so the show could begin airing in six to eight months. Good, yes?
August 31, 2007
Update again over at JP's page with more info and news on season three production as well as the usual array of new and improved backgrounds along with a somewhat somber shot of what appears to be a cave with a bloody and tied up person who somewhat resembled Jonas Venture Sr., although it's impossible to make out his face entirely, he has the right color hair and his clothes match some we've seen the late, great Dr. Venture wear. And of course since VB is never a show to skimp on backstory, I'm sure this will be fully explained.

That's all for now I guess.

You asked for it, you got it. This is how I pretend to have content for the site when I don't actually have any (such is life between the seasons). Vote in the new poll and win nothing except maybe my love an adoration. But that's a big maybe. Enjoy, kids!
May 4, 2007
In an effort to consolidate and also make up for updates I missed, here's a quote from a recent update from Jackson:

Doc's turning in his first two scripts back to back this week, one of which is the most uncharacteristically complex plot he's ever penned. The other promises to be this season's "Tag Sale--You're It!" I'm really happy with these stories so far and looking forward to directing them. It feels like Doc and I are hitting our stride, playing all the right notes and yet expanding upon and deepening the Venture universe. Things feel a little more open and easygoing or something...it's hard to explain. But with 27 1/2 of these under our belts already, it's like we can take certain chances with the narrative we couldn't before because we were still setting up the world.

Also the season two DVD is apparently selling very well, which is of course good news.

And what about Doc Hammer? Read:

One of the special features of the Season Two set is a tour of Astrobase Go. In it you learn all you ever wanted to know about Astrobase Go. Well, that is if you didn't want to know much more than how long it takes us to get to our studio. Oh what am I saying? "Deep Inside Astrobase Go" is one of the most exiting features ever to be dubbed "special". It was a phenomenal undertaking. A crew of no less than two hundred and fifty, highly paid professionals were rocketed to a moon orbiting space station to make this documentary. Many of them died of shock or lack of oxygen. Still others suffered from a dementia that space travel hands out like party favors. And believe me, it was all worth it. I'd kill them all again to make this most important Special Feature. I would stare in their eyes as I squeezed the last hiss of life from their neck if had to. Yes, it's that important. The people must know what makes the Astrobase so astro-special!

So if you ever wanted to know a whole crapload about the Astro-Base DVD feature on the S2 DVD, this is the thing you have to read. Okay? Good.

The insolent Jackson Publick updated his Live Journal with some news of his piddly Venture Brothers show. Bah! That's next on my list of things to "buy out", if you catch my drift. Along with a trailer for the season two DVD there's also some production news, but no mention of any Monarch-related scripts or props, so you may as well just not bother. We all know why you're here! On with it!!
March 10, 2007
Finally a new update over at Publick Nuisance where Jackson himself has confirmed season three being greenlit as well as Cartoon Network making a commitment to season four (though it's apparently not in stone just yet). As for the important info, no air dates yet, but it looks like it will start around a year from now. Production, meanwhile, will start up on April 9th after Jackson and Doc have a few scripts under their belts. Thirteen new episodes, as is the norm. There's a ton of other stuff there as well, including some rejected artwork for the season two DVD (due out April 19th), so go read it now damn you. Oh, and thanks to mystery man 'Gumby' for e-mailing me about that.
February 27, 2007
Wizard Universe has a recap of the recent Comic-con fun with Doc, Jackson & company. In short:

[S]how creator Jackson Publick confirmed for the packed event hall that “The Venture Bros.” would indeed be picked up for a third season and that a fourth season is likely included with that deal but would be confirmed at a later date.

But wait, there's more!

When asked for an air-date for Season 3, Publick said, "[Season 3] may not air until Spring of next year."

So okay, it may be over a year-long wait yet again, but they also may not want to get our hopes up again. Or maybe they just want more time to do their thing and not kill themselves making the show. All conjecture, just like what Dr. Girlfriend was about to say!

When asked later about the whereabouts the show's more sinister villain, the Phantom Limb, Doc replied, "You got that whole third season comin' up... Stuff happens, it’s gonna be resolved; we're not 'Lost!' We'll tell ya!"

January 8, 2007
Over at Jackson's he's posted a shot of the season two DVD interior. Cool stuff. There's also some info on the DVD which you may or may not know already such as commentary on every episode, special features and deleted scenes (both animated and animatic). Oh, and you can pre-order it on Amazon.com for $21. So get to it!

Update (Jan 9, 2007 @ 3:47pm): Oh, and because so many people have mentioned it and I am also apparently blind:

Oh, and we've begun writing Season 3...

Woot!

by Mike - (6:51am EST) - 27 Comments
If you periodically take a gander at the AS schedule you may have noticed this interesting bit scrawled at the bottom of the most recent one:

What does this mean? Well, 3rd & 4th Q of course means the 3rd and 4th quarter of (I assume 2007), which would be July through December. The number after each show would be the number of episodes ordered (or planned). Yes, that's a '26' after Venture Bros.

So, twenty-six new episodes? Possibly starting late next year? Season three is of course more of a reality than season two was at this point, so a renewal wouldn't be very shocking, however a 26 episode season would be crazy. It's also possible that those 26 episodes could be seasons three and four. Either way we can't say until there's something more official I guess. So just hold onto your butts. Okay? Good.

Time for the monthly update at Publick Nuisance to top off today's abnormal amount of updates. Lots of stuff about the upcoming episodes (there are four left, five if you count State Dinner which hasn't aired yet but is on ASFix), the season two DVD (yes, there will be one) and even... season three? Might there not be a year long wait before a renewal announcement this time? Be still my heart. Jackson also recaps Dragon-Con a bit and answers some questions about the continuity errors present in season two due to the episode airing order (VEN before Assassinanny, and Love-Bheits possibly before Twenty Years) and even explains the sourpussin' joke in Twenty Years to Midnight that had so many of us puzzled. So yeah, go check it out.
